I just made it home from an outstanding mule deer hunt in New Mexico with my son. I'm not exaggerating when I say that hunt was one of the most fun hunts I've ever been on. We dealt with some wild conditions, had a lot of fun, and ultimately were successful in tagging a buck. Today's episode is a detailed recap of that hunt, evaluations of some gear we used, and some of the lessons we learned along the way. Apologies for the scratchy sound!! In Part 2 I talk through hunt days 4 through 7, with a lot of focus on a doe that I watched for nearly 9 hours and then the 7+ hour spot and stalk on a mature buck high up in an alpine basin. Everything came together in textbook style. This hunt validated so many lessons from master muley hunters, it was incredible to experience and replay - and this hunt will form the basis for many future adventures I have new levels of confidence in the skills and tactics that helped it yield success. He dives into the expectation and the reality of the hunt, as well as new expectations for the new western hunter. From going into a new zone for the first time to taking the information you learned to the next hunt, we break it all down to give you guys our best insight. Another South Dakota hunting trip is in the books. This year was my first mule deer hunt. Joining me for this episode is Duane Croel for the second time. Duane is the reason for my interest in hunting South Dakota and hope that we have many more trips in the years to come. For this year I was the solo hunter. Hunting mule deer for the first time in an area I have never hunted before pushed the limits of my skill as a deer hunter. We discuss the the challenges we faced and the lessons we learned. Ultimately if came down to having to call a local friend to take us into a new area that we did not have the confidence going to ourselves and finally harvested my first mule deer buck. On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan updates the listeners on how his first ever archery mule deer hunt is going. Dan is midway through an archery mule deer hunt in Utah where he is helping his friend Linnea fill her first ever archery tag on a big mule deer buck. Dan and Linnea met last year when they competed on a van/bus/rv renovation tv show called Gutted. Linnea is a full time van lifer and Dan and his wife Samantha spent their past life renovating RV's. Linnea has been a die hard flyfisher for a while now but when she found out that Dan is a hunter she immediately started asking for advice and trying to get him to help her fill her first ever tag. Dan and Linnea have found and begun to pattern some mature Utah muleys and are hopeful for what the next few days have in store. Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/RonSpomerOutdoorsSubscribe Welcome to the Ron Spomer Outdoors Podcast! In tonight's episode, I tell a story about a special mule deer hunt! Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa's cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I've photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I've tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that's the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.
