Send us a textWhat if your fitness tracker could revolutionize not just your health habits, but the entire healthcare system? This fascinating conversation with João Bocas, globally recognized as "The Wearable Expert," explores how wearable technology might democratize healthcare and shift power dynamics toward consumers.João shares his remarkable journey from Portuguese immigrant with no English skills to renowned healthcare innovation consultant. His path was shaped by a powerful personal transformation—moving from an unhealthy lifestyle of excessive drinking and smoking in his twenties to becoming a passionate advocate for wellness technology. "I'm a 25 or 26-year-old man and I feel like I'm 60 already," he recalls thinking at his turning point. This revelation sparked a lifelong commitment to health and eventually led him to pioneer work in digital health. The discussion dives deep into wearable technology's evolution from primitive pedometers to sophisticated health monitoring devices. João emphasizes that technology alone isn't the solution—behavioral change remains the critical foundation for health improvement. "The wearable is not the miracle. The miracle lies with us, our will, our desire, our self-care," he explains. This perspective cuts through the hype surrounding health tech and focuses on its true purpose: enabling better decisions.Perhaps most compelling is João's vision for healthcare's future. He foresees a world where individuals own their health data and use it to negotiate more equitable insurance premiums. "I exercise five times a week. Why shall I pay the same premium as someone who exercises once a week and smokes?" This potential power shift represents a fundamental disruption to traditional healthcare economics, particularly relevant to markets like the United States where insurance costs remain a significant burden.Whether you're a healthcare professional, technology enthusiast, or simply someone interested in taking control of your wellness journey, this conversation offers valuable insights into how personal responsibility and technological innovation might reshape healthcare for everyone.

Kirsty Tait describes herself as an entrepreneur turned “soulpreneur”.“You can't really be an entrepreneur if you're not connected to your soul”, she says. The last few years she has been following signs in life, which has led her to shuttle back and forth between continents, with a special focus on the Central American nation of Panama. We'll get back to why.Kirsty accidentally entered entrepreneurship, she says, and years later she also accidentally entered spirituality. She tells a fascinating, uplifting, beautiful and also funny story about how a failure to properly microdose psilocybin changed her life.“I had my whole world shift. It was the ultimate awakening. I went into pure consciousness. I went into past lives. I understood there's no such thing as good and evil. I understood energy, death, birth and rebirth.”The meaning of life?“To be here now and experience whatever it is that you are experiencing.”Kirsty realized that all this new understanding was in fact not new but past memories (including around a hundred past lives). After the psychedelic experience she tried other modalities to achieve a similar inner elevation, particularly breathwork and deep meditation. One day, on the sofa, she plunged into a three hour out-of-body experience.“Breath is the most powerful technique we have. Just sitting in silence and working with the breath is an amazing medicine for your body.”We actually get sneak peeks into the “other side” on a daily basis, Kirsty points out, for example when we sleep and dream.“Consciousness is limitless. The brain limits us because we are told that it limits us.”Are we living in crucial times?“We couldn't live in any other time than this one. Everything happening now is perfect. it cannot not be perfect. If everything in the world wasn't happening right now in perfect synchronicity with the existence of the tapestry of life, you would not be here. So, crucial times don't really exist.”Time is a notoriously elusive concept. But, to be practical about it, what about the historic human integration of our time? Doesn't that affect us in unique ways?Kirsty isn't sure. Today we interconnect via technology, but maybe ancient cultures were interconnected spiritually, she thinks. Maybe cultures in different continents that supposedly didn't have any concept of each other (as far as we know) were in contact in other, natural ways.Kirsty Tait sees a perhaps surprising link between spirituality, authenticity and entrepreneurship.“I honestly don't think there can be a difference”, she says.“If you're truly showing up as your authentic self, you are spiritual, regardless of whether you believe in spirituality or not.”“‘Who am I' and ‘how do I want to show up in the world'. Those are the only two questions we need to ask ourselves.”“When you feel what is true for you, and it really lands, you feel it in your whole body. Your nervous system will calm down. There will be no fight or flight reactions.”Many people perceive the world right now as messy. How to handle that? “Mother Theresa would always go to a peace rally, never to an anti-war rally. Why? The energy in the peace rally promotes peace, and the energy in the anti-war rally promotes war.”Where attention goes, energy flows, as it were. And what about Panama? Kirsty is passionately involved in a project called “The Conscious Island” on a peninsula in Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean coast in western Panama. The idea is to create a conscious community, including an event space and a wellness space, by amalgamating with the traditions of an indigenous community still living on the peninsula. The Conscious IslandKirsty on LinkedinKirsty on Instagram

In this fascinating episode of The Weekly Transit, Scott Tejerian speaks with Krista Shoe, a passionate coral conservationist whose journey took her from a corporate telecom career to rebuilding coral reefs in Panama. Currently based in Bocas del Toro, a stunning archipelago off Panama's coast, Krista shares her profound connection to the ocean that began when she first saw it at age nine.Krista details her work creating coral nurseries and building artificial reef structures to combat the devastating effects of climate change on marine ecosystems. Through her program "Mother of Corals," she teaches visitors to participate in reef restoration, explaining how they first learn about coral species in a classroom setting before diving to place pH-neutral concrete structures that become new homes for transplanted coral fragments. With diving experience spanning over 20 countries, Krista provides unique insights into the diverse underwater landscapes around the world, from the cold waters of Iceland to the vibrant reefs of Indonesia. She explains why coral reefs are crucial as "speed bumps in the ocean," protecting coastlines from storms and serving as nurseries for marine life. The discussion highlights how oceans produce over half of the world's oxygen, making their health vital for all life on Earth.Scott explores how Krista's astrological makeup—Aries Sun and Rising with Scorpio Moon, plus Mercury and Venus in Pisces—perfectly aligns with her ocean conservation work and bold decision to relocate to a tiny island where it takes just 15 minutes to cross from shore to shore. The conversation offers practical ways everyone can contribute to ocean health through mindful consumption and waste reduction, inspiring listeners to consider how their daily choices impact our planet's most vital ecosystems.(2:32) Meeting Krista Shoe and her astrological makeup(3:48) How Krista found herself in Panama's Bocas del Toro(6:10) Leaving corporate telecom for island life(13:52) First ocean experiences and discovering scuba diving(17:50) Learning underwater sign language for diving communication(20:20) Educational background and career path(25:00) Diving adventures across 20+ countries(27:42) Favorite diving destinations and underwater diversity(35:35) Why coral reefs matter for ocean ecosystems(37:56) Human impacts damaging coral reefs worldwide(42:57) Understanding coral bleaching and ocean acidification(44:51) Krista's coral restoration techniques explained(48:30) Building artificial reef structures with specialized cement(52:17) The volunteer program teaching others to restore reefs(59:18) How healthy reefs protect coastlines from hurricanes(1:03:06) How to participate in "Mother of Corals" programs(1:04:19) Personal sustainability practices to protect oceans(1:07:46) Life on a small island and environmental awareness(1:10:20) The expat and local community in Bocas del Toro(1:13:25) Final thoughts and contact informationKrista Shoe: motherofcorals.orgInstagram: @mother.of.coralshttps://www.theweeklytransit.com/

Panama is thriving with new opportunities for those looking to live, work, and invest abroad. While modern infrastructure development has been a slow process in some areas for decades, progress has been accelerating each year. In this episode, Matt interviews Anne-Michelle Wand, an American expat who has been living in Panama full-time for 15 years. During her time there, she has been providing consulting services to individuals relocating from the United States, guiding them through the challenges of uprooting their lives and establishing new roots in a foreign country.Having spent years on Panama's Caribbean coast in the town of Bocas del Toro, Anne-Michelle has observed a recurring issue—many aging adults eventually leaving due to a lack of resources for safe and comfortable senior living and elder care. With her background in real estate and private equity in the U.S., she sees a solution. She has begun developing plans for a new retirement community designed to provide the necessary support for older adults who wish to remain in the area.In her conversation with Matt, they discuss what it takes to live outside of Panama City, examining the systems already in place and what still needs improvement. This episode offers a glimpse into the early stages of an exciting real estate development project—one that presents potential investment opportunities or even a future home for those considering a move.To learn more about Anne-Michelle's work, visit her website at Passive Profit Partners.
