Nick has six novels and a collection of short stories under his belt, but A Forty Year Kiss may be his first love story. His mind was set to wondering after he overheard a passionate conversation in his favorite local bar between two older people, a conversation that made him blush just a little. He began playing with the idea of what this couple's back story was. Nick's book asks readers to consider the difference between first love and love between mature adults, how life's baggage affects personal relationships, and whether people can really change. Nick also talks to us about his rural Wisconsin roots, why he read Babysitter Club books in his childhood, and the debate on whether he should wear a cape. For our book recommendation section of this episode, we decided to find some of our favorite books we've read as a result of being in a book club together for two decades. For the most part, our book club chooses novels, but there is one memoir in the lot, as well as contemporary fiction, historical fiction, sci-fi, and a classic. In this episode of The Daily Windup, we talk about the challenges and solutions faced by the Hawaiian community during the pandemic. We talk about collaborations with the Governor of Hawaii to tackle the high unemployment rate caused by the travel industry's collapse. Through brainstorming sessions and identifying various problems, they developed a groundbreaking initiative—creating a university to train individuals in STEM fields and provide opportunities for technological advancements. One of the major hurdles they encountered was the lack of high-speed internet access on certain islands, such as Molokai. So a unique solution called "university in a box" was born. This innovative approach involved a specialized version of XF 5,000, an application capable of running offline on laptops. Students could access all the university's resources and training material without an internet connection and periodically synchronize their progress during visits to designated locations with high-speed internet. Join us in this insightful episode as we explore the transformative power of education and technology in rebuilding communities and fostering economic growth.

Becca Mann is a writer and athlete. A member of the USA Swimming National Team from 2012 until 2021, Becca is a 2x USA National Champion and was the youngest person ever to place in the Top 10 in 4 events at a single Olympic Trials. She has also represented Team USA at 4 World Championships. Becca initially fell in love with the solitude, power and efficiency that swimming offered but was ultimately motivated by the ability to consistently achieve goals. Whether moving to a more advanced lane, breaking a school record, breaking a state record or becoming a world champion, each small goal led to an even bigger one. No matter how big the goal was, her mindset stayed the same. She maintained the same pre-race routine (as it had worked before) and reminded herself that every meet was the most important meet of her life. After missing her 3rd Olympic team, she decided that if she was going to walk away, she would need to do something that had never been done before. With clear understanding and mastery of her mental strengths and vulnerabilities including OCD, she became the first person to have consecutively swum the triangle between the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. This life defining experience allowed her to redefine her relationship with swimming and reminded herself that it is supposed to be fun. Becca Mann shares her struggles, insights and knowledge in her latest book, “Outside the Lanes.” @becca__mann
«Restate in quella casa» ricordava Gesù.
Humpbacks start appearing as early as mid-fall, but daily sightings don't happen until mid-December. We're practically in the middle of the season so I thought I'd do a podcast about when is whale watching season in Hawaii. The optimal whale watching period in Hawaii extends from mid-February to March when the whales display their most active behavior. Visitors can expect the highest number of sightings between November and May. The most active period to view these magnificent animals takes place between mid-February and March. The best moments to observe whales occur early in the morning and late in the afternoon, since whales breach and surface most often during these times Whale watching in Hawaii in January Best Locations to see Humbacks Maui tops the list as the perfect spot to see humpback whales because of an extraordinary underwater area known as Penguin Banks. The shallow waters southwest of Molokai serve as a breeding area for humpback whales. When is whale watching season in Hawaii journey will be delightfully rewarding when it takes you there. Oahu -Diamond Head offers an excellent viewing area for observing younger whales who display playful behaviors.Photographers frequently choose Makapu'u Point & Ka'iwi Coast to capture whale activity because it indicates whales are close by. The Ala Wai Boat Harbor and Kewalo Basin serve as primary departure points for numerous tour boats which enhances your expedition success rate. Kauai - Poipu Beach combined with Kilauea Lighthouse on Kauai offers excellent opportunities for whale watching from land. Big Island - Visitors to the Big Island can frequently spot humpback whales near the Kohala Coast. Taking Whale Watching Tours Viewing stations near the Makapuu Lighthouse means you can learn about the humpback whales as you look for them. Although you will have multiple opportunities to see whales, when is whale watching season in Hawaii during a tour? There is no certainty you will spot them. Successful whale watching requires both patience and a touch of luck. There are whale-watching tours which use marine radio Channel 14 to share whale locations with other boats to improve your whale sighting opportunities. Whales perform a dramatic act known as breaching when they leap out of the water which creates a truly spectacular sight. Look for misty water spouts emerging from their blowholes during the whale blowing behavior. Whales demonstrate playful behavior by hitting their tails against the water's surface during tail slaps. The majority of boats assist you in whale spotting, yet occasionally they will take you by surprise with sightings of spinner dolphins, pilot whales, or false killer whales. Whale watching from a boat on Maui is a popular way to way to see Whales Tips for the Best Whale Watching Experience Obviously, whales do not follow a schedule so take the time to appreciate your surroundings while you wait for them. Carrying binoculars improves your ability to see whales from far away. Many people forget to enjoy the present because they focus too much on obtaining the ideal photo. Enjoy the experience!Smaller boats deliver intimate whale watching experiences despite big tours being entertaining. Choose a reliable tour operator because companies such as the Pacific Whale Foundation on Maui demonstrate expertise while supporting conservation work. Can You Swim with Humpback Whales? People do actually ask me this and of course it's NO!! If you're lucky enough to be near one while swimming, staying as far away as possible can be dangerous. Humpback whales in Hawaii cannot be swum with as it's against regulations. Approaching these magnificent creatures poses legal risks and physical dangers because they receive protection. Some tours offer the experience of swimming with wild dolphins.
2/26/25 - St. Damien was a Belgian priest who answered God's call to minister to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii in the late 19th century. Leaving behind his home and family, St. Damien selflessly devoted himself to caring for those exiled to the isolated leper colony, providing not only medical care, but also spiritual support. He built churches, schools, and homes, offering the love and dignity of Christ to those society had abandoned. Despite contracting leprosy himself and ultimately dying from the disease, St. Damien's unwavering faith and commitment to the marginalized can teach us a lot about the Catholic Church's mission to serve the poorest and most vulnerable.

Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 314The Saint of the day is Saint Marianne CopeSaint Marianne Cope's Story Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Her courage helped tremendously to improve the lives of its victims in Hawaii, a territory annexed to the United States during her lifetime (1898). Mother Marianne's generosity and courage were celebrated at her May 14, 2005, beatification in Rome. She was a woman who spoke “the language of truth and love” to the world, said Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes. Cardinal Martins, who presided at the beatification Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, called her life “a wonderful work of divine grace.” Speaking of her special love for persons suffering from leprosy, he said, “She saw in them the suffering face of Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother.” On January 23, 1838, a daughter was born to Peter and Barbara Cope of Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. The girl was named after her mother. Two years later the Cope family emigrated to the United States and settled in Utica, New York. Young Barbara worked in a factory until August 1862, when she went to the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Syracuse, New York. After profession in November of the next year, she began teaching at Assumption parish school. Marianne held the post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of her congregation. A natural leader, three different times she was superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much that would be useful during her years in Hawaii. Elected provincial in 1877, Mother Marianne was unanimously re-elected in 1881. Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35 of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they also opened a hospital and a school for girls. In 1888, Mother Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for “unprotected women and girls” there. The Hawaiian government was quite hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the home that Saint Damien de Veuster had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride, and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women were part of her approach. Awarded the Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work faithfully. Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian people and still work on Molokai. Mother Marianne died on August 9, 1918, was beatified in 2005, and canonized seven years later. Reflection The government authorities were reluctant to allow Mother Marianne to be a mother on Molokai. Thirty years of dedication proved their fears unfounded. God grants gifts regardless of human shortsightedness and allows those gifts to flower for the sake of the kingdom. Click here for more on Saint Marianne Cope! Amy Gubser Amy Gubser, is an extraordinary 56-year-old grandmother who this year became the first person ever to complete an unassisted swim from the Golden Gate Bridge in SF to the Farallon Islands - a 30-mile stretch of cold, shark-infested waters off the California coast. Moreover, what makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Amy only started her marathon swimming journey aged 46.Throughout a fascinating conversation, Amy describes her path from early morning swims in San Francisco Bay through increasingly arduous challenges, including consequently crossing the treacherous North Channel between Ireland and Scotland. Furthermore, Amy shares her insights into the physical and mental preparation required for ultra-marathon swimming, from nutrition strategies to managing the understandable fear of great white sharks and jellyfish swarms. In addition to her swimming achievements, Amy discusses how her work as a nurse has informed her mental toughness, the importance of breaking age-related stereotypes, and as a result, her mission to inspire others - especially women - to pursue ambitious goals at any age. With upcoming swims planned for Scotland's deep and mysterious Loch Ness, therefore Amy is proof that human potential knows no bounds when matched with determination, careful preparation, and above all her simple mantra: 'I can do hard things.'Amy's story is an inspiring reminder that it's never too late to pursue extraordinary achievements. This week on Vatican Insider, the interview segment is a repeat but it features a compelling storyteller and fascinating guest, Fr. Bill Petrie. At the time of our conversation, Fr. Bill, a priest of the Order of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SSCC), was pastor of St. Damien parish on the Hawaiian island of Molokai'i. We've been friends for a number of years and usually met at Kalaupapa on Molokai'i to talk about Sts. Damien, SSCC, and Marianne Cope and their work there with victims of leprosy. We met at the home of some mutual friends in Honolulu on the island of Oahu to talk about his 25 years of work with St. Mother Teresa! 25 years! Tons of insight and remarkable stories about this holy woman, whose feast day we celebrated recently. I cannot find my photo of our Honolulu encounter but there was a rainbow over Fr. Bill's head as we finished our talk! Fr. Bill now lives on Oahu. I have been focussing on St. Teresa recently, as you know from my recent interview segment when my guests were the producer and stars of the film, “Mother Teresa and Me.” The film was released by Fathom Events in select U.S. theaters for one night only on Oct. 5 2023. (Originally aired on 9/30/23)
