On today's episode of the Buck Junkie Podcast, Opening Weekend of Dove Season did not go according to plan (00:05)... Mark got caught up in a monsoon while throwing down some delicious eats (01:40), but Mikey's buddy managed to get struck by something a little more feathery (06:46). It goes against the southern boy code of conduct to NOT like gravy (10:22). Mikey's fantasy football draft got a little wild last week (15:00). Malcom picks Mark's brain about his new “Cheese Slaw” recipe (17:30). We got to test out some new rifles for Opening Day, and they were awesome (19:48)! Pizza Ovens can do a lot more than just making pizza (24:31). Even though we didn't get many birds, it's GREAT to finally have hunting season back on the menu (28:35)! With the way Mississippi is starting to pay out these bounties, we might be hunting some coyotes here soon (33:09). Mark got the chance to hunt some MONSTER gators down in Vicksburg (37:05). There's a new bad-to-the-bone deer blind headed to camp (45:51), and opening up a new giveaway just in time for small game season (49:58)!

Segment 2, August 31st, 2024 This is a huge weekend in the outdoor realm. Monday, September 2nd kicks off the first stage of Dove Season in both Carolinas. Host Bill Bartee discusses opening day, safety, and gains advice from James Buice of Buice & Associates, a specialty sales firm covering the southeast. Buice has fished & hunted around the world but brings it back local for the upcoming dove. Hunting of migratory game birds, including doves, by any method is not allowed on Sundays. It is illegal to dove hunt with a shotgun that can hold more than three shells unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler incapable of removal without disassembling the gun. Hunting safety is a priority when in the field. Free hunter safety courses are available through NCWRC. Wildlife Law Enforcement Officers advise dove hunters to follow these safety tips: Adhere to established safe zones of fire. Ensure you have the correct ammunition for your firearm. Keep the muzzle of your firearm pointed in a safe direction. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Do not shoot at low-flying birds. Do not place decoys on utility lines. Hunters can purchase or renew their license and obtain their HIP certification online for immediate use in the field. Hunters can also purchase and renew their license at a Wildlife Service Agent office. It is a violation of state and federal law to take migratory game birds with the use or aid of salt, grain, fruit or any other bait. Additionally, hunters need to be aware that an area is considered baited for 10 days following the removal of all salt, grain or other feed. Migratory game birds may be hunted in agricultural areas where grain has been distributed as the result of normal agricultural operations. Information regarding agriculture and planting techniques may be obtained from a local N.C. State Extension Center. Visit the agency's website to view an interactive map of game land dove fields. Show Highlights: Dove hunting is often times a social sport unlike deer and turkey Many times a social dove hunt includes lunch for attendees Have the grains and salts removed ten days prior to the beginning of the season Buice likes sunflowers, millet, & milo for his fields Know where everyone is & always shoot at blue sky Do not shoot low Dove hunting season will be separated into three segments: Sept. 2 - Oct. 5, Nov. 9 - Nov. 30 and Dec. 16 - Jan. 31, 2025. The daily bag limit is 15 mourning or white-winged doves, either as single species or combined, and shooting hours are from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset. Take care of your dogs regarding weather. Keep them hydrated and cool in the heat & protected in the cold Things You'll Learn by Listening: Dove hunting season will be separated into three segments: Sept. 2 - Oct. 5, Nov. 9 - Nov. 30 and Dec. 16 - Jan. 31, 2025. The daily bag limit is 15 mourning or white-winged doves, either as single species or combined, and shooting hours are from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset. Migratory game bird hunters, including lifetime license holders, are required to register in the federal Harvest Information Program (HIP). HIP is a survey method developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to collect more reliable estimates of migratory game bird harvests throughout the country. HIP certification is available July 1 – April 1 and expires June 30 each year. The Carolina Outdoors is powered by the great dove hunting brands like Tundra 45 YETI, Turtlebox Speakers, & a pair of Duckhead pants from the Charlotte fly shop, Jesse Brown's.

(From 09.03.22, Segment 3) Another hallowed tradition to help ring in the autumn season is the Opening Day of Dove Season! The Outdoor Guys invite on Sampson Parker Jr., Wildlife Officer for Mecklenburg County, to discuss not only his responsibilities but also his 'ins-and-outs' recommendations for this iconic sport. Officer Parker is the only NC Wildlife Resources Commission wildlife officer assigned to Mecklenburg County, and so he, along with assistance from officers in the surrounding counties, will be making sure that dove hunters are out safely participating in the activity while also following the laws and regulations. Sounds like a busy job? He says he likes his office (the outdoors!) better than anyone else! And, as with most other outdoor activities, for those needing gear, Jesse Brown's Outdoors is a wonderful place to turn, supplying brands like Filson to make sure the day goes off without a hitch.

Dove Season is the unofficial start of the hunting season. You can see the excitement and anticipation on the face of every hunter, regardless of if they hunt dove or not. This is because dove season is the official count down to all the other types and species of hunting. If you do participate in dove hunting, you want to make sure that you have the right equipment and accessories to be both successful and legal. There is only one way to describe dove hunting – FUN! Especial in Texas, dove hunting is a social gathering where hunters get together and have fun. People have cook-outs and bar-b-ques and might even conclude in a big party with music and dancing. Dove are considered migratory game birds. Where it is legal to hunt, all native doves are state and federally protected. This means that you can be checked by state game wardens and federal game wardens. State regulations vary from state to state but the federal regulations regarding dove hunting are the same in every state. Be sure to check the laws in your specific state to make sure that you are in compliance. Because they are migratory make sure that you comply with federal law. There are six primary areas of federal laws that relate to dove hunting. These are daily bag and possession limits, legal shotguns, hunting over a baited field, using live birds as decoys, hunting from a motorized vehicle, and using a motorized or sailing vehicle to rally birds. These federal laws are mirrored in the state you are in so there is uniformity between the state and the feds. There is no such thing as a bad day hunting! As long as you do your research, know which birds are legal to hunt, and follow the hunting rules and regulations in your area, memories will be made to last a lifetime!
We're back! It's been a bit of time but we're back in the saddle just in time for another dove season in Texas. Strap in, let's get hunting season started and good luck! Stock media provided by Artmuns / Pond5
On today's episode of the Buck Junkies Podcast, the guys are getting geared up for dove hunting and preparing the farm for the fall season by implementing a new heavy disk for the tractor (00:50). This year, the guys created a natural edge, around 30-35 feet of tree line, used as a buffer zone for deer food plots (03:16). A wall of vegetation was grown by the guys to provide cover and sight for any wildlife nearby (05:45). This wall of vegetation also provides a chance of managing micro food plots, also known as deer buffet (07:18). Mikey's experience with the power of a Milwaukee pole saw was INTENSE (07:58). Johnson grass trouble near the farm (09:22). What's happening on the cameras around the farm (11:17)? The deer no longer want vetches, they want clovers instead (14:12)! The guys explain in detail about the free resources and programs Mississippi has to offer when it comes to the conservation of property, management of wildlife, renting tools, and more (15:45). Big private organizations are paying in carbon credits for using your land (27:56). You can get a check by working together with local organizations through conservation programs (30:30). What are the Top 5 Shotguns to use for Dove Hunting (36:40). What type of shotgun shells should you use for doves (50:48)? What type of shotgun gauge should a youth use (52:36)? The evolution of automatic shotguns (55:00). Should you pattern your shotguns (55:55)? What's on the menu for dove season (59:38)?
We are rockin' and rollin'. Putting the final touches on everything for you guys for dove season. Can not wait to see everyone!

But one thing that sticks out in the outdoors world, is that Labor Day Weekend means the Opening Day of Dove Season in the Carolina's. Many people across these states will be getting their shotguns out and heading to the dove field. General Manager of Jesse Brown’s Outdoors, Wes Lawson, discusses the various types of shotguns: 12 gauge, 20 gauge, .410 (wait, a .410 a gauge?). He’ll also discuss the tubes that modify the shot pattern and spray. Regardless, this sport isn't just a sport; it is a rite of passage for many across the country (especially the South). Normally, as tradition holds, college football pregame shows play in the background, with a tailgate meal, then followed by the hunt. This year we'll have to miss the games but will still hope to have an enjoyable dove season.
