On this week's Blowout… REED'S CORNER IS OFFICIALLY COOKED. Or at least the corner of Birkenstock Boston's and Able to Buy Whenever. (Spoiler: He blames TikTok.) But because discovery is often generated out of necessity and Bostons are officially Pop Music now, that also means mules are Mainstream™, which has forced — yes, forced — us to investigate some alternative options in the Big Comfort footwear category. And guess what? Alongside oversized everything and a near-extinction event for hard-bottoms, the Mule Market is thriving my guys. In the game of life, every species is like an action figure. You got your dogs and your dung beetles, your bald eagles and your blueberries. And for a long time scientists believed it was pretty much impossible for those action figures to mix and make a new kind of action figure that was able to have its own babies (dog beetles? Baldberries? Nah). But, today we tell the story of a four-legged beast in Kentucky whose existence is upending scientific beliefs. If you want a big fat SPOILER, here it is: the creature in question is a mule! After almost 20 years of living her life as a hybrid (a mix between a horse and a donkey), believed to be incapable of having babies, Peanut the mule shocked the world by doing the impossible. Peanut's owners, Teresa and Jerry Smothers, tell us the story of her life. Evolutionary biologist Dr. Molly Schumer explains how scientists' understanding of hybrids has changed dramatically over the course of Peanut's lifetime. And no mule episode would be complete without a cowboy-hatted mule packer leading us deep into the rocky trails of the American West on muleback to explain why mules are the best of both worlds of their parents. Things have gotten a lot crazier over the past few years for award-winning former CBS News war correspondent Lara Logan. Now reinvented as a far-right commentator, she was most recently kicked off Newsmax after appearing on Eric Bolling's primetime program and launching into a QAnon-themed rant on air, claiming world leaders drank children's blood and made people eat insects, among other notable wild conspiracies. Elsewhere in the episode, Maurice Chammah, a reporter at The Marshall Project and author of Let the Lord Sort Them: The Rise and Fall of the Death Penalty, talks American sheriffs and their far-right tendencies. In the podcast's “Fresh Hell” segment, the hosts discuss reports of intimidation at early ballot drop boxes, particularly in Arizona from those who are hyped up by Dinesh D'Souza's debunked conspiracy film, 2000 Mules. Welcome to the Cocktails, Culture, and Conversations Podcast! On this episode of The C3 Podcast, David, Laurel, and Maine dig into the feasibility of African American descendants of slaves FINALLY getting reparations from the government. Are we STILL suffering from the impacts of these practices that were put in place in the 1860s? How has society adjusted since the implementation of the Civil Right's Act of the 1960s? And why is the GOP so adamant about returning the power to impose governance back to the states? It may be much deeper than we've originally expected. The C3 Squad tackles all of this and more in the latest episode! Highlights from the episode Laurel kicks off the discussion by breaking down where the idea of black reparations came from, when the discussion was introduced to the government, and why we never really got our “40 Acres and a Mule”. David provides the importance of viewing how the agricultural independence that getting “40 Acres and a Mule” from the government would have bolstered the economic power of African Americans starting back in the 1800s. Where would we be economically today had that actually been done? Laurel questions the validity of the U.S. government actually following through on the promise of reparations or will they create additional obstacles to continue stifling the progress of black Americans? The trio discusses exactly what they believe would be viable alternatives to just financial compensation being paid out to black families and how do we get white Americans to buy in to the idea of black families receiving compensation that they are excluded from.
