Girl, You Haven't Heard?? Is a podcast where we discuss Black History that the Canadian government would prefer we forget, and true crime cases from a critical perspective without the copaganda.
Peter Nygard is an infamous Winnipegger who used his money, and power for his own sick and twisted greed and fulfillment. He is often referred to as the Canadian Jeffery Epstein, due to his vast sexual based assaults, the fact that he had many high status friends and colleagues (ranging from former U.S. President George Bush, Actor Sean Connery, Former Prime Ministers Jean Chretein, and Brian Mulroney, world famous pop star Michael Jackson, and more), but primarily the way he used the Caribbean Islands of the Bahamas as his own personal playground for pedophilia, rape, and made his own ‘paradise' for his friends and business associates to join in. This is the longest case that we've discussed thus far on Girl, You Haven't Heard?? as his heinous acts discussed go back as early as 1979; and so it has to be a multiple episode segment. In the third and final part, we discuss everything that led up to the eventual downfall of Peter Nygard, the many lawsuits filed against him in New York -including the one filed by two of his own sons-, the F.B.I. raid on his New York and L.A. offices, his varying U.S. and Canada based charges, the complicity of the Winnipeg Police Service in nurturing this abuser, and we round out the case with my thoughts. This was a long case, with many different moving parts. I would love to hear your thoughts on what we discussed in this episode, and the other two episodes about Peter Nygard as well! In part two, we discuss Nygard's Winnipeg based 1980 rape charge, his attack on Jonna Laursen, Dale Dreffs, 1990 Winnipeg based sexual harassment lawsuits against him, the luring and rape of April Telek, an L.A. based 1996 Lawsuit against Nygard, the infamous ‘Pamper Parties', his attack on housekeeper Maridel Carbuccia, his 2006 tax issues, his girlfriend and madam Suelyn Mederios, and rounding out with the confusing case of Bianca McKinney. In 1992, in response to the verdict in the L.A. based Rodney King case as well as the murder of 22 year old Raymond Constantine Lawrence, the Toronto based Black Action Defense Committee (or BADC) decided to organize and lead a peaceful protest. Due to the actions of young white men, the protest quickly turned violent and Black folks bared the brunt of the backlash, while the white perpetrators were able to skate by with ease. The Toronto Police used the 1992 protest as a justification for further violence, policing and mistreatment against Black communities and individuals. In this episode we discuss the Rodney King Case, the BADC, the Yonge Street Protest itself, and the aftermath, both positive and negative. In 2017, 23-year old Cody Severight was crossing a street downtown when he was hit by drunk driving Winnipeg Police Detective Justin Holz. Justin had been out drinking with buddies from just before 5PM until 8PM when he decided to get into his car and speed through the streets of downtown Winnipeg reaching 100KM/H. After hitting Cody, Justin didn't stop, he didn't call 911, he sped up to 129KM/H, leaving Cody in the street to suffer and eventually die. Justin was eventually formally charged, and sentenced to 30 months in jail in 2019. But he actually recieved full parole privileges only a short time later on August 29th, of 2020. Richard Comte is an officer with the Winnipeg Police Service who initially began working for the force in 2002. In 2015, he found himself in quite a mess which he created all on his own. He and officer Andrew Tighe -Yes the same Andrew Tighe who was caught drunk driving- were responsible for investigating a sexual assault that had occurred at the Green Brier Inn which occurred in October of that same year. Richard's unethical, threatening, problematic and questionable attempts at obtaining video surveillance footage would later come under fire, and he would be the subject of a LERA (Law Enforcement Review Agency) investigation and lawsuit filed by Jonathan Singh, owner of the Green Brier Inn. In this episode we discuss the details of the incident leading up to legal action taken as well as Richard's general messiness behind the scenes throughout the process.
The Manitoban Independent Investigative Unit was created after the urgent public pressure was mounting on the province to act after the murder of Crystal Taman at the hands of Derek Harvey Zenk. For a long time it was a concept and on June 18th of 2015, it actually became active. This unit ideally, was created to hold police accountable for this mis-actions, especially when officers act as judge, jury and executioner as they too often do. In practice, all this unit has done is acted as another layer of protection for police throughout the province and prevented families of harmed loved ones from actually receiving the justice they were previously or are currently actively seeking. More often than not, when the IIU becomes involved, the final resolution ends up being a complete dismissal of all potential charges, protecting the ones who have directly caused harm. In this episode, we discuss the IIU, how they operate, what their responsibilities are and then we discuss some of their most recent case dismissals that I disagree with.
Winnipeg Police Officers have perpetual issues with driving drunk and in 2017, a handful of officers were actually arrested after they had been caught doing exactly that. None of the officers arrested received any real sort of consequence, and throughout their court proceedings they all remained employed by the WPS despite their obvious offence. The other intriguing aspect to officers caught driving under the influence in 2017, is that they were all working for the service for 15+ years, and so at this point they assumed they were immune to either getting caught drunk driving or being charged with such by a fellow officer, because they are known to protect one another rather than turn on each other. This is a two-part series where the first part was focused on Jason Garrett and Leslie McRae, the details of their cases, the final outcome, and my brief thoughts, and insights sprinkled throughout. This is the conclusion to this episode, part two, where the focus will be shifted to Andrew Tighe, Michael Richard Hawley and my final thoughts. Sean Cassidy is a Sargent with the Winnipeg Police Service who has been working with the force for over 20 years. In the past five years, he has been hit with a slue of charges based on three different incidents for crimes from fraud to assault causing serious bodily harm and many in-between. Sean has received virtually no consequences for his actions despite the immense amounts of harm he has caused to the very community he claims to be serving. His actions continue to be justified and he continues to be praised throughout legal processes where he is supposed to be held accountable. All police officers working with the Winnipeg Police Service should be fired, and the force itself should be disarmed, defunded and abolished, but Sean should be one of the first to go. In this podcast episode, we discuss the nature of Sean's charges, as well as what happened as a result of the charges, and wrap everything up of course, with my final thoughts on the situation. Crystal Sveinson was a 40-year-old mother and wife who was struck and killed by drunk driver Derek Harvey-Zenk (Who later legally changed his named to HarveyMordenZenk) in the early hours of Feburary 25th, 2005. At the time of the crash, Derek was a constable with the Winnipeg Police Service and was good friends with East. St. Paul police chief at the time, Harry Bakema. Derek was covered and protected by the East St. Paul police service, the Winnipeg Police Service and essentially all parties who were involved in the initial investigation. The cover-up was so immense that Derek ended up only receiving two years of house arrest for driving drunk, killing an innocent woman, and injuring another. The lack of accountability in his initial ‘prosecution' by special prosecutor and defense lawyer Marty Minuk, led to the Taman Inquiry which would eventually lead to the abolition of the East St. Paul and later lead to the creation of the Manitoban Independent Investigation Unit. In this episode we discuss the events leading up to the crash, the crash itself, the role all parties played in delaying accountability and justice for Crystal's family, as well as the results of the inquiry. We also discuss how this case proves that the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg understand what abolition is, and they understand how to carry it out swiftly as the East St. Paul police service was disbanded and abolished within years of Crystal's death following the Taman Inquiry. Highway Of Tears is a strip of land which is approximately 724km long in British Columbia that stretches from Prince Rupert to Prince George. Since 1969, and possibly sooner, primarily Indigenous women, estimates are anywhere between 18 and over 40, have gone missing or have been found murdered along the Highway Of Tears. It is an area where serial killers both known and unknown are active. They continue to be active with no consequences and no real concern of being caught because majority of the targets are Indigenous women and girls and based on BC history the police in that area do not typically care to take cases involving Indigenous women and girls seriously. It is also apparent that racism is hugely wrapped up in these cases, the way they are handled, the way they are reported and the way the families are supported after the tragedy occurs. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) only opened investigations into these disappearances and deaths in 2005 after immense public pressure to do so. They however, only acknowledge and are investigating 18 cases and are ignoring many others when a lot of the public feel they should obviously be included. Few, if any cases have been solved and many also remain cold. Just like in all of the other cases, where the police have been overall extremely ineffective and they are relying solely on public tips now to make any sort of advancement. In order to give each woman and girl, as well as other aspects of this case the focus they deserve, it is broken down into two parts for the first time. In this conclusion episode we will be discussing the cases of folks that are excluded from the E-PANA investigation: Helen Frost, Jean Sampare, Cecilia Nikal, Deena Braem, Bonnie Marie Joseph, Madison Scott, Immaculate Basil, Anita Thorne, and The Jack Family. We also discuss the problems with the RCMP and police overall where the Highway of Tears is concerned. The episode rounds out with discussing the Highway of Tears Symposium Recommendations Report and a few brief thoughts of my own. The Shelburne Race Riots were the outcome of the British Government's inability to care about anything besides their appearance to their peers and the well being of white people under their rulership. The evacuation of the British from 'America' at the end of 1782, caused an increase in Black people brought to the 'Canadian' side of the colonial border, especially in the spring of 1783. It did not take long at all for racial tensions to reach a boiling point on July 26th of 1784. Reports say that the riots occurred for a week, but attacks against Black people in the area continued to be reported for up to a month after the initial attack. This riot, as well as extensive other important Black history in "Canada" occurred in Nova Scotia and yet it is rarely ever taught. This episode discusses the Shelburne Race Riots, the racial climate in Nova Scotia, as well as other important Black pieces of history which you probably haven't heard of yet. Michael and Dazelle Johnson have four children together; Cruz, Morgan, Asja and Milan. In 2014, Dazelle, took the children from their hometown of Nassau, Bahamas and brought them to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Asja and Milan were just 6 and 2 years old at the time of their disappearance. No one has spoken to or seen the two young girls and their mother since 2015. Despite infinite resources and extensive amounts of funding, Canadian police and other governmental funded groups have been unable to locate the trio, despite believing they remain in 'Canada' to this day. Public assistance and awareness is required to make sure the girls are safe, and to reunite them with their father, brothers and extended family back in the Bahamas. If you have seen or heard from Dazelle, Asja or Milan please call (1-866-543-8477) or online leave a tip online at www.missingkids.ca. This episode discusses the initial disappearance of all four of the Johnson children, the lack of information out there about this case, and the unnecessary adultification of Black girls when they go missing. Africville acted as a safe haven for previously enslaved Black folks from across "Canada", "America" and The Caribbean. Black folks were unable to secure housing within city limits due to racism and being denied the opportunity to rent or secure housing by white folks who reaped the benefits of a city built up by the same people they were violent towards. The Haligonian government did everything in their power to harm the Africvillians who were simply just trying to be happy and create stability for themselves and their families. This town was eventually destroyed by the same government who forced them to curate their own community. Eddie Carvery, an Africvillian through and through, held one of the longest civil rights protests in "Canadian" history against the City of Halifax for the slow genocide and 100 year hell residents were put through. Eddie occupied his protest site on and off for over 50 years and yet he is rarely, if ever, spoken about in an educational context or when Africville is discussed. This episode discusses the harm the Haligonian government rolled out, the way Africvillians did everything they could to live joyous lives, the demolition and and destruction of the beautiful town, of course Eddie Carvery and his protest, but also the apology and ensuing compensation which took place in 2010. Throughout the 1990's, "Canada" had a major issue with serial killers; but this problem was especially amplified in British Columbia. These killers were specifically targeting Black and Indigenous female sex workers who worked and lived in the East Hastings area. Most have heard of Robert Pickton, but what most people are not aware is that there were many others who were also active at this time and remain free and possibly still killing up until this day. This case highlights the lack of care, consideration and protection given to sex workers in general but especially those who are Black and/or Indigenous. The Hemlock Valley Murderer is still out there to this day and the families of Tracy Olajide, Tammy Lee Pipe, Victoria Younker and Mary Lidguerre still have no answers as to what happened to their loved ones. The police, as usual, were absolutely ineffective at preventing this from occurring and have not been able to answer any questions about who may have done this despite having DNA evidence from the murderer in their custody for over 20 years at this point. This case has been cold, longer than I have been alive, and their families deserve closure and answers. Become A Patron: https://www.patreon.com/girlyouhaventheard
The 'Canadian' government was and continues to be racist. The extensive lengths in which the government went to keep Black people out of 'Canada' were ridiculous and essentially endless. Amber Valley was one of many successful Black communities established in Alberta in the early 1900's despite the governmental efforts to curate an all white nation. This episode discusses the policies, laws and problematic measures in which the government took to keep Black folks out of the country, but specifically the west; with the main focus remaining on how Amber Valley was still able to thrive despite all of the systemic, social and literal barriers put in their way.
