In our fifth Patreon exclusive episode of Unsolved Canadian Mysteries, we explore the August 1, 1989 disappearance of Doreen Jack (26) Ronald “Ronnie” Jack, (26), Russel Jack (9), and Ryan Jack (4). The story begins at First Litre Pub near Prince George, British Columbia, where Ronnie is approached by an unknown man at the bar. Ronnie is looking for work, and the man mentions a job opportunity not too far from a local lumber mill. Ronnie could work at the mill, Doreen could work in the kitchen, and they have a daycare program for the kids. There is only one catch, the man says -- we have to leave now. Ronnie gets home and Doreen the offer. They pack up the kids, get a few belongings, and pile into the truck. The work program should only be for a few weeks as the kids need to return to school in September. They never returned. That itself is strange enough, but the botched police investigation, the missed evidence, and the many times the family fell through the cracks in the police system make you wonder what exactly happened that night in 1989.

This episode takes us to Prince George, British Columbia. On the evening of August 1, 1989 Ronnie and Doreen Jack went to their neighbourhood pub looking for a bite to eat and a few drinks. Instead, they found a mystery man with an enticing job offer that would forever change their lives and the lives of everyone who loved them. Ronnie would do logging, Doreen could help in the kitchen, and their two kids would be taken care of at the remote camps daycare facility. Transportation wouldn't be a problem either, the mystery man could drive them to the camp that night. The last time any member of the Jack family was seen was only a few short hours later… packing some of their belongings in a truck. In August of 1989, an entire family of four vanished from Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. Things were not easy for 26-year old Ronnie Jack or his wife Doreen. The couple was poor and living on government assistance, and Doreen had an incredibly difficult upbringing. Jack, Doreen, and sons Russell and Ryan were indigenous and living in Prince George in 1989. Ronnie had been out of work due to a back injury, but when he visited the First Litre Pub on the night of August 1, his luck appeared to have changed. A man offered him a job bucking logs, and said there was work available for his wife as well: assisting as a cook in the kitchen on the ranch. What's more is that there was supposedly a daycare on site so the boys would be taken care of while their parents worked. The Jack family packed their belongings in the middle of the night and promised family members they'd be back in about ten days--just enough time before their older son, Russell was due to go back to school. Those ten days came and went, and nearly three decades later, the Jack Family has never been seen or heard from again. What happened to this family of four? Were they involved in an accident on the rural roads of Canada that somehow concealed their fate, or was there something much more sinister going on? The man who allegedly offered the Jacks a job has never been identified, and many have speculated that the Jacks were lured into something that ended in their demise.Join Elaine and I as we try to piece together the events surrounding the mysterious disappearance of the Jack family.WARNING: Some of the subject matter discussed in this episode may be upsetting or disturbing to some  (Trigger warning: Rape and sexual assault, Domestic Violence, Alcoholism). In many of our cases, we look at missing person cases that involve a person being kidnapped or disappearing. In this episode we are going to look at a case that is really one of a kind, at least in Canada. This case is going to cover the disappearance of not one, but four people simultaneously in August of 1989 in British Columbia. This case intertwines many of the topics and themes that we have covered in the past on the show. This case includes the disappearance of four indigenous people, it is also a story of people going missing, seemingly without a trace and this case shows once again how vulnerable people have been preyed upon in the past.  Show Intro Music: Brought to you by Gallagher Music Sources: The Disappearance of The Jack Family - Canada Unsolved No Clues in Search for Missing Jack FamilyCanada's Missing.com 29th Anniversary For Missing Jack FamilyMystery Remains Around Missing B.C. Highway Of Tears is a strip of land which is approximately 724km long in British Columbia that stretches from Prince Rupert to Prince George. Since 1969, and possibly sooner, primarily Indigenous women, estimates are anywhere between 18 and over 40, have gone missing or have been found murdered along the Highway Of Tears. It is an area where serial killers both known and unknown are active. They continue to be active with no consequences and no real concern of being caught because majority of the targets are Indigenous women and girls and based on BC history the police in that area do not typically care to take cases involving Indigenous women and girls seriously. It is also apparent that racism is hugely wrapped up in these cases, the way they are handled, the way they are reported and the way the families are supported after the tragedy occurs. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) only opened investigations into these disappearances and deaths in 2005 after immense public pressure to do so. They however, only acknowledge and are investigating 18 cases and are ignoring many others when a lot of the public feel they should obviously be included. Few, if any cases have been solved and many also remain cold. Just like in all of the other cases, where the police have been overall extremely ineffective and they are relying solely on public tips now to make any sort of advancement. In order to give each woman and girl, as well as other aspects of this case the focus they deserve, it is broken down into two parts for the first time. In this conclusion episode we will be discussing the cases of folks that are excluded from the E-PANA investigation: Helen Frost, Jean Sampare, Cecilia Nikal, Deena Braem, Bonnie Marie Joseph, Madison Scott, Immaculate Basil, Anita Thorne, and The Jack Family. We also discuss the problems with the RCMP and police overall where the Highway of Tears is concerned. The episode rounds out with discussing the Highway of Tears Symposium Recommendations Report and a few brief thoughts of my own.
