When Mayor Zohran Mamdani refused to march in New York City’s Israel Day parade - the first mayor of the city to do so in over 60 years – “did not surprise” Rabbi Josh Weinberg, who participated in the parade. But the liberal Zionist Reform rabbi was surprised to discover that he was marching alongside far-right ministers like Bezalel Smotrich and members of the Kahanist Otzma Yehudit party. Had he known, said Weinberg, Vice President of the URJ for Israel and Reform Zionism, speaking on the Haaretz Podcast, he would’ve held a sign making it clear that “Smotrich’s Zionism does not reflect our ideology at all, and is in fact antithetical to who we are as Jews and Zionists, and even as Americans. His brand of racism, discrimination, xenophobia – everything that he stands for – we want to totally reject while still maintaining our love and support for Israel." Weinberg added that a statement by Smotrich that the New York event resembled the Jerusalem Day flag march – an event regularly marked by harassment and violence towards Palestinians in the city – made him “want to throw up.” Also speaking on the podcast, Haaretz's New York correspondent Etan Nechin said that the Israeli ministers in the parade presented their presence as an “act of defiance by the Israeli Knesset and by the Israeli government” to “show” Mamdani. Assessing the mayor’s relationship with the Jewish community over the first six months of his term, Weinberg praised Mamdani’s initiative to increase spending to secure Jewish institutions with the rise of antisemitism, but regretted his boycott of the parade and his high-profile commemoration of Nakba Day online. Nechin countered with his belief that Mamdani had taken advantage of harnessing his popularity to take advantage of “this sudden historic opportunity to platform and champion Palestinian voices.” Mamdani, he said, “is a symptom of American public opinion – especially young Americans who are having conversations about Israel and Palestine, but not on Israeli or Jewish terms. We're at a pivotal moment in world geopolitics. His main challenger is the Reform party led by Nigel Farage. The Greens are newly invigorated after their recent win in the Gorton and Denton by-election in Manchester, so there has been a lot of conversation in progressive circles as to whether the Greens should step away to give Burnham a clear run. Current mission: Community outreach to medical schools and residency programs Teach about nutritional and natural alternatives not covered in standard curriculums. Traditional training provides almost zero meaningful nutrition or green pharmacy education. Polypharmacy: use of 5 or more prescription medications. Gut/acid issues: Long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use (e.g., omeprazole, lansoprazole) is flagged as harmful to gut microbiome and nutrient absorption. Curt builds step-down plans (tapering PPIs) while supporting the gut with natural measures instead of leaving people on a PPI for 30 years. Focus on side benefits, not side effects. Green pharmacy interventions are chosen because they: Address root causes (e.g., metabolic health, inflammation, gut integrity). Often have multiple positive effects (e.g., berberine helping blood sugar and lipids; curcumin helping joints and systemic inflammation). The aim is fewer total drugs, fewer side effects, better overall function. Clients are encouraged to work with their doctor, so deprescribing is: Planned, Monitored, and Integrated with their existing care. Curt and Ed both acknowledge there are situations where “rescue medicine” is necessary: Severe pain where an opioid is appropriate. Acute crises where drugs are needed as a bandage. The green pharmacy view: Use those drugs as short‑term tools, Then remove or reduce them once the immediate crisis passes, While implementing natural strategies to decrease the need for long‑term prescriptions. We have entered a world of maximum gerrymandering warfare. Any guardrails that once existed, from the Constitution or the courts, have been bulldozed over the last decade – most recently in the Supreme Court decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act and made it harder for minorities to challenge racially discriminatory voting maps. Red and blue states alike have been aggressively trying to redraw their congressional maps in response to all these developments. And there is no sign that will end in 2028; legislatures will just continue trying to tweak their lines to squeeze out advantage for whatever party is in power. And competitive districts in this country – already an endangered species – now teeter on extinction. That is, unless something dramatic changes. Lee Drutman is a senior fellow in the political reform program at New America. He's one of the most persistent and thoughtful advocates of selecting House members through proportional representation – a system used in many other countries that would make gerrymandering much more difficult.
