PART THREE. In Canada there is a stretch of highway between the cities of Prince Rupert and Prince George that covers 725 km (or 450 miles). For over 50 years, this dark, isolated road has swallowed up women and girls in the night from 1969 to present. Because of the despair that has happened along this corridor, it is now known as the Highway of Tears. In this three-part series, we will be exploring this area and the devastating stories found alongside it. If you have any information for any of these cases, please call the E-PANA Tip Line at 1.877.543.4822.Content Warning: Sexual assault Tea of the Day: Rhea.co Strengthen Me Tea Theme Music by Brad FrankTo get involved:https://highwayoftears.org/pillars-hope-strength/https://www.csfs.org/payments/donationshttps://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/Sources:Sabo, Don, “Highway of Tears,” The Canadian Encyclopedia, June 6th, 2016, Updated January 18th, 2019 https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/highway-of-tearsDirected by Matthew Smiley, “Highway Of Tears: The Unsolved Serial Murders Of Aboriginal Women.” Produced by Carly Pope, Narrated by Nathan Fillion, Released March 6th, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3wWjcIc_1MDirected by Tim Wolochatiuk, “We Were Children.” Produced by Kyle Irving, Starring Rene Batson, Taya Ayotte Bourns, Alice Dano, Release by Eagle Vision Inc. 2013. https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07FQ3GZKX/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_rMcDiarmid, Jessica, “Highway of Tears: A True Story of Racism, Indifference, and the Pursuit of Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.” Narrated By Emily Nixon, Simon and Schuster, November 12th, 2019“The Highway of Tears: The Road Where Women Disappear” by Bipin Dimri October 4, 2022 https://www.historicmysteries.com/highway-of-tears/“Highway of Tears,” 48 Hours, Season 25, Episode 7 with Peter Van Sant, November 17th, 2012Bains, Camille, “Relatives of dead, missing women meet to seek an end to violence.” The Vancouver Sun, 30 Mar 2006, Thu ·Page 27 https://www.newspapers.com/image/496873937/Speirs, Margaret, “Tears walk numbers climb.” Terrace Standard, 29 Mar 2006, Wed ·Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/330198530/Million, Nicole, “Moricetown woman walking to end Highway of Tears.” The Interior News (Smither, British Columbia, March 1st, 2006, Page A5 https://www.newspapers.com/image/899209888/Dolha, Lloyd, “Highway of Tears Symposium Sparked by Teen Murder.” First Nations Drum, January 3rd, 2006 http://www.firstnationsdrum.com/2006/01/highway-of-tears-symposium-sparked-by-teen-murder/Hamilton, Todd, “Taking back highway of tears.” The Interior News, 21 Sep 2005, Wed ·Page 2https://www.newspapers.com/image/508753084/Carrigg, David, “Mother of slain teen Aeilah struggling to pay for funeral.” The Province 22 Feb 2006, Wed ·Page 16 https://www.newspapers.com/image/505252524/Zielinski, Susan, “City woman missing.” Red Deer Advocate, 05 Jul 2002, Fri ·Page 1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/558928173/Hall, Neal, “Highway of Tears website launched.” The Vancouver Sun 26 Nov 2005, Sat ·Page 4 https://www.newspapers.com/image/497415120/Slade, Daryl, “Olympic skater laces up to find friend.”Calgary Herald 09 Jul 2002, Tue ·Page 23 https://www.newspapers.com/image/486299668/Hunter, Stuart, “‘She's been gone too long.'” The Province, 24 Nov 2005, Thu ·Page 3 https://www.newspapers.com/image/505694271/The Province - MORD AUF EX – Der internationale True Crime Podcast

This is a special episode where in honour of the National day of Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, we have decided to focus on some cases of wrongful death and murder of Indigenous men, women, and children in Canada. We felt that since we are fortunate enough to have this platform we need to bring awareness to the atrocities that Indigenous communities face everyday. This episode is definitely one of a more somber nature and we hope that it encourages you to educate yourself on the issues that Indigenous communities are facing. And even though we will never understand what Indigenous communities go through and are currently going through, we want to let you know that we sympathize and stand with you. We hope that everyone takes a second to recognize the land that they are living on does not belong to them and was taken from First Nation communities during time of Colonization, that was not that far in the past. We want to acknowledge that the places we live and are currently recording from are the ancestral, unceded, and traditional lands of indigenous peoples. In Halifax, we are in Mi'kma'ki, the unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq peoples. In Calgary, we are in the traditional territories of Niitsitapi and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, including Chiniki, Bearpaw, and Wesley First Nations. And in Burlington, we are in the Haudenosaunee, Anishinabewaki, Attiwonderonk, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Mississauga peoples.

From 1969 to present day up to 40 women and girls have disappeared along a 450 mile stretch of road in British Columbia between the towns of Prince George and Prince Rupert.  Some of these women and girls have later been found dead, but many are still missing today. Many of these victims are Indigenous women whose cases are often overlooked, underfunded or outright ignored. Highway 16 is the perfect hunting ground for predators. The long stretches of deserted roads, the dense forests, and the large quantities of hitchhikers make this area one of the most dangerous places in Canada. Highway of Tears is a 2015 Canadian documentary film directed by Matthew Smiley and narrated by Nathan Fillion. The film concerns the notorious Highway of Tears cases on British Columbia Highway 16 from 1969 to the present. The Highway of Tears case consists of numerous unsolved murders and disappearances of women on Highway 16, with a majority of the victims being Aboriginal. The documentary explores the possible effects of systemic racism on the investigation, beginning with the Canadian Indian residential school system and including the popularity of the song "Squaws Along the Yukon" by Hank Thompson in the 1950s. The film covers the Robert Pickton murders and examines the possible roles killers Bobby Jack Fowler and Cody Legebokoff played in the Highway of Tears. It also references an earlier 2006 documentary Finding Dawn. The film ends with a note that then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper did not support an inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in CanadaSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. This week, prepare for what might feel like jet lag.  We're visiting a long list of places in connection with this case: Florida, Oregon, Washington, Iowa, Louisiana, Texas, South Carolina, Arizona, Tennessee, even British Columbia.  We're reminded of the importance of proper evidence collection as this episode stirs some memories of both Episode 13 as well as other cases where DNA led to the discovery of the perpetrator, whether alleged (like in Episode 43) or confirmed.  We've also stumbled onto some other incredibly sad case topics that will no doubt spill into the weeks to come.  The man we're talking about in connection with a number of crimes has made some headlines over the years.  The chilling account shared with 48 hours by one of his surviving victims will really put into focus the absolutely horrific deeds Bobby Jack Fowler is documented and confirmed to have perpetrated.  This week we're sharing a promo for The Manic Pixie Weirdo podcast! If you're enjoying our podcast, please consider leaving a rating & review on Apple Podcasts. From 1970 until present day 73 women and girls have gone missing or turned up dead on Canada's highway 16, otherwise known as the highway of tears. A disproportionate number of these women and girls are indigenous. Most of their cases remain unsolved. Most of their faces remain unseen.  The Royal Canadian Mounted Police assembled a task force in 2005 in the hopes of solving 18 of these cases. The name of the task force is E-Pana. 18 is not enough. But it's a start. We could never endeavor to tell all of their stories today, we've told as many as we could and in time we will tell more. We also start to unravel the cultural genocide of indigenous people that has been going on in Canada and the United Stated for hundreds of years, and trace the generational trauma that is deeply rooted in the horror of residential schools.   May 5th is Red Dress Day, so wear your red in honor of the missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and 2 spirit people.
