Saint of the Day
Holy Grand Prince and Martyr Michael of Tver (1318)

Saint of the Day

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2025

He was born in Tver in 1272 to Prince Yaroslav Yaroslavovich, who was the brother of St Alexander Nevsky (November 23). Michael was brought up in the faith by his mother, who later became a nun. Such was his fervor that from childhood he was certain that he must end his life either as a monk or a martyr. He succeeded his brother as Prince of Tver in 1285, and later became Grand Prince of Vladimir, the Russian capital during the Mongol conquest.   When Prince Michael lost the throne of Vladimir through the plotting of his kinsman Prince George, his advisers urged him to go to war against George; but he preferred to lose power rather than to subject his people to bloodshed. When George attacked Tver itself, Michael took up arms to defend it, and was victorious. One of his prisoners was Princess Agatha, George's wife and the sister of the Tatar Khan. When she died in captivity, the full wrath of both George and the Tatars was aroused against Michael. The Prince knew that the only way to avert catastrophe for his people was to go to the Golden Horde to be judged at the Khan's court. Michael's kinsmen and advisors knew that such a course would surely lead to his death, but none were able to dissuade him from going to save his people.   Michael was kept prisoner with a wooden yoke around his neck, and subjected to many humiliations by the Tatars. But as he awaited his sentence he remained calm, spending his days in chanting the Church services and the Psalms. On the night of 21-22 November he had a revelation of his impending death. He attended the Liturgy, took Communion, and embraced his family. Then, opening the Psalter, he read the words Cast thy burden on the Lord, and He will sustain thee: He will never permit the righteous to be moved (Ps 54). He then calmly greeted his kinsman George and his minions, who pounced on the Prince and ran him through with swords. Prince Michael's relics were returned to Moscow, then translated to Tver in 1320. When the city was besieged in 1549, St Michael appeared to the inhabitants in the form of a mounted knight, armed for battle.

Heidi Reeves – Founder of Mousewood Forest and Nature Early Learning and Family CentreBorn and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Heidi Reeves has dedicated her life to nurturing children, families, and educators through compassion, curiosity, and innovation. Her journey in early childhood education began in Vancouver, where she completed her Early Childhood Education training and taught preschool in culturally diverse communities. In the 1990s, she opened her first daycare, Kindercastle—a beloved centre known for its enrichment programs and joyful approach to learning.Heidi often laughs when recalling a story from her own childhood: at five years old, she announced she wanted “ten children and no husband.” By the time she was thirty, running her daycare and surrounded by ten preschoolers, her wish had, in a sense, come true—though not quite in the way she imagined. In 2005, Heidi moved to Prince George, where her work in early childhood education continued to evolve. Over the years, she has worn many hats—preschool teacher, respite foster parent, postpartum doula, and parent coach—always with the same mission: to meet families where they are and support them through the most formative years of life. Her innovative spirit has repeatedly pushed the boundaries of early learning in northern British Columbia. She introduced progressive practices like the Reggio Emilia approach, Forest and Nature School philosophy, and Shanker Self-Reg to local classrooms long before they were widely recognized. These methods shaped her deep belief that children thrive when they are connected to nature, guided by curiosity, and surrounded by meaningful relationships. In 2018, Heidi received a formal diagnosis of autism—a revelation that brought clarity to a lifetime of experiences and reaffirmed her purpose. She often describes her neurodivergence as a “superpower,” one that fuels her focus, empathy, and creativity. Rather than seeing challenges as obstacles, she has turned them into strengths that allow her to connect deeply with children and families, especially those navigating neurodiversity themselves. That same clarity led to her greatest professional achievement: the creation of Mousewood Forest and Nature Early Learning and Family Centre, Prince George's first licensed forest and nature school. What began as an assignment for a college course soon became a movement—a vision for a new kind of childcare community where every child, regardless of background or ability, feels seen, supported, and inspired.Established as a nonprofit in 2020, Mousewood operates on a five-acre property of meadows, trails, wetlands, and gardens. It offers inclusive, research-based early learning rooted in nature connection, child-led inquiry, and strong relationships between educators, children, and families. Today, Mousewood stands as a first-of-its-kind educational model in northern BC, blending outdoor exploration with emotional development, self-regulation, and belonging.Despite the regulatory and financial hurdles of running a nature-based school under a Temporary Use Permit, Heidi and her team—supported by passionate parents, volunteers, and community members—continue to pour their energy and resources into creating a safe, inclusive space for young learners.Heidi's work represents the best of what education can be: heart-driven, evidence-based, and deeply human. Her story is one of resilience, purpose, and vision—a reminder that when we follow our intuition and stay connected to what truly matters, we can change not only the way children learn, but the way communities grow.Website: www.mousewood.ca

Millennials Are Killing Capitalism
Prison Death-Worlds, COVID-19, and the Fatal Convenience of Crisis with Dalton Lackey and Teagan Murphy

In this episode, we are joined by Dalton Lackey and Teagan Murphy, co-authors of the article "The COVID-19 Murders": Prison death-worlds and the fatal convenience of crisis. Their work offers a piercing critique of how carceral institutions weaponized the pandemic—not as an unprecedented emergency, but as a tactical opportunity to deepen control, dehumanization, and death. We'll begin by hearing from Dalton and Teagan about their political motivations, the methodologies they employed, and the intellectual scaffolding behind their analysis. From there, we'll unpack their challenge to the dominant narrative of "failure"—a framing that presumes the prison system was simply overwhelmed by crisis. Instead, they argue that the pandemic revealed not incompetence, but calculated cruelty. We'll also examine how disaster operates as a tool of tactical evolution within prisons. As the authors write, "Rather than revealing entirely new challenges, our findings demonstrate how the pandemic instead exacerbates what the literature has suggested are the preexisting goals of carceral punishment." We'll discuss how incarcerated people themselves narrated these shifts—how they recognized the charade of "safety" and named the degradation that exceeded even the brutal norm. From psychic death and coerced docility to the punitive treatment of those living with HIV/AIDS, we'll trace the historical continuities and contemporary parallels that shape this death-world. We'll ask how social distancing protocols, meant to protect, instead expanded estrangement—and how preexisting conditions of confinement intensified the crisis. Teagan Murphy (any/all) is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Their research, conducted primarily through qualitative interviews, ethnography, and content analysis, focuses on institutional and carceral logics and the reproduction of inequities via narratives of deservingness. Their dissertation, which draws on data collected from their time as an active courtwatcher in Prince George's County, presents a critique of the distinction courts draw between criminalized defendants and "the community," resulting in a pretrial system where Black bodies are deemed public safety risks that antagonize the moral sanctity of white civil society. They also argue for a literary reframing of "courtwatching," moving from reformist interpretations to an antifascist one aligned with broader abolitionist goals. IG: @veganmurphy  Dalton Lackey (they/them) is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Their research broadly concerns structural anti-blackness, carcerality and punishment, revolutionary social movements, and Fanonian psychopolitics. Dalton is currently working on their dissertation project, which explores the complexities of invention and signification that emerge in the haze of radical collective action against the anti-black social order. Send us a textThis episode feels like what we've worked toward for the past few seasons. How can we have a library podcast and not do the pop culture juggernaut that was Twilight? Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (yep she spells Stephanie that way) follows Isabella "Bella" Swan on her move from sunny and warm Phoenix, AZ to the cold, rainy and wet Forks, WA. She stands out as the new girl. But it's not just corny 17-year-olds boys paying Bella special attention. She's also caught the eye of possibly the oldest high schooler, the moody and broody Edward Cullen. If Bella isn't "like the other girls" then the Cullens are not like the other quasi adopted families out there. The siblings date each other ("they're like together, together"), they don't talk to anyone, and well..they're undead. What follows is a romance for the ages, perfectly situated in 2005 when we couldn't quite pick up on the massive red flags behind our side-swept bangs. In hindsight, someone should've stopped those of us who read it as teens. But, what doesn't kill you makes you... a vampire? We've grown up and learned a few lessons. Now we can deliver this conversation from a more healed place. In this episode we question Bella's survival instincts, Edward's stalker tendencies and the family dynamics at play in this book. And while people argue whether Breaking Dawn should've been 2 movies (it shouldn't have been...), we hope listeners understand why this episode had to be a two-parter. We just had so much to say! These Books Made Me is a podcast about the literary heroines who shaped us and is a product of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System podcast network. “If you are questioning what I'm doing, then why not get it from the source?” When you've consistently done the work to be one of the best, it's not just the on court respect and praise that is earned, it's how your voice resonates beyond the game and no better example of this than Kevin Durant. In this powerful and candid conversation, NBA superstar Kevin Durant sits down with Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor to open up like never before. From his early days in Prince George's County to becoming one of the most dynamic scorers in NBA history, KD reflects on his journey through every team he's played for — the Thunder, Warriors, Nets, and Suns — and what each chapter taught him about loyalty, leadership, and growth. He opens up about overcoming devastating injuries, finding balance off the court, and the evolution of his mindset through success, criticism, and reinvention. He doesn't shy away from the questions surrounding his choices, his direct demeanor on social media and describes how he sees his iconic career vs. how it's viewed by the world. Revealing the darkness he experienced from his injuries to rediscovering the light from his time away from the game, KD's love and appreciation for the camaraderie, the intense competition and the high demands of the sport. He shares how special Olympic moments have been, how winning a championship doesn't define his legacy and lets us in on his bond with players around the NBA, especially Anthony Edwards, who he sees a lot of himself in and compares their relationship to a similar one he shared with the late Kobe Bryant. Durant also talks deeply about family, sharing heartfelt stories about the impact of his mother, Wanda, and his relationship with his father, Wayne, and how thier love and lessons shaped the man he is today. The conversation turns to business and life beyond basketball — from his ventures in media and tech with Boardroom to his vision for empowering the next generation of athletes and creators. And of course, KD keeps it real about being a lifelong Washington Commanders fan — the highs, lows, and that unwavering DMV pride. It's vintage Durant: honest, thoughtful, competitive, and always evolving. Don't forget to hit the subscribe button, like and comment- we love hearing from you Pivot family! At 63, Prince George endurance athlete Larry Malmgren achieved one of ultrarunning's ultimate challenges — finishing The Divide 200, a 200-mile mountain race in Alberta with an extraordinary 40,000 feet of elevation gain and loss.Over four punishing days and nights, Larry battled sleep deprivation, harsh weather, and physical collapse to cross the finish line in 98 hours and 34 minutes, becoming one of the oldest finishers in the event's history.A longtime member of the Prince George Trench Runners, Larry has built a reputation for redefining what's possible at any age. His running résumé includes the Canadian Death Race — a 118-kilometre test of grit and endurance — but The Divide 200 held deeper meaning. After collapsing just 60 miles from the finish in 2024 due to “runner's lean,” Larry returned a year later with renewed determination, a five-person support crew, and guidance from high-performance coach Simon Lamarche. What began as a solo pursuit evolved into something far greater: a story of teamwork, resilience, and human connection. “It stopped being about the run,” Larry reflects. “It became about the experience — the deepening of friendships and the new ones formed on the trail.”Through 98 hours of near-continuous movement and only six and a half hours of sleep, Larry faced searing heat, freezing rain, and his own physical limits — all in search of the answer to a timeless question: Why? For him, it's simple — because pushing through the unknown brings us closer to what it means to be alive. Now, after more than a decade of ultrarunning, Larry has shifted his focus to fastpacking — blending endurance running with ultralight backpacking — trading race medals for mountaintops and competition for connection with nature. His journey is one of courage, evolution, and the quiet power of perseverance.
