At 63, Prince George endurance athlete Larry Malmgren achieved one of ultrarunning's ultimate challenges — finishing The Divide 200, a 200-mile mountain race in Alberta with an extraordinary 40,000 feet of elevation gain and loss.Over four punishing days and nights, Larry battled sleep deprivation, harsh weather, and physical collapse to cross the finish line in 98 hours and 34 minutes, becoming one of the oldest finishers in the event's history.A longtime member of the Prince George Trench Runners, Larry has built a reputation for redefining what's possible at any age. His running résumé includes the Canadian Death Race — a 118-kilometre test of grit and endurance — but The Divide 200 held deeper meaning. After collapsing just 60 miles from the finish in 2024 due to “runner's lean,” Larry returned a year later with renewed determination, a five-person support crew, and guidance from high-performance coach Simon Lamarche. What began as a solo pursuit evolved into something far greater: a story of teamwork, resilience, and human connection. “It stopped being about the run,” Larry reflects. “It became about the experience — the deepening of friendships and the new ones formed on the trail.”Through 98 hours of near-continuous movement and only six and a half hours of sleep, Larry faced searing heat, freezing rain, and his own physical limits — all in search of the answer to a timeless question: Why? For him, it's simple — because pushing through the unknown brings us closer to what it means to be alive. Now, after more than a decade of ultrarunning, Larry has shifted his focus to fastpacking — blending endurance running with ultralight backpacking — trading race medals for mountaintops and competition for connection with nature. His journey is one of courage, evolution, and the quiet power of perseverance.
The federal government partially shut down for the first time since 2018. The shutdown puts the D.C. region in a particularly perilous position, considering the area's close relationship with the federal government. Additionally, President Trump is again threatening to fire more civil servants and further slash federal programs. Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey joined the show to discuss how the shutdown will affect area residents. Plus, he explained why Democrats are holding out for a permanent extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits and why this poses a significant concern for many residents living in Prince George's County.More than 60,000 Loudoun County residents have jobs tied to the federal government, according to a county estimate. We spoke with Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall about what a federal shutdown means for her residents. Plus, the U.S. Department of Education is alleging Loudoun County Public Schools violated Title IX when the school system suspended two male students earlier this year. We asked Chair Randall what it might mean for the schools' ability to receive federal funding, and we discussed what's next in the fight over data centers.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

Virginia's statewide elections are now in the home stretch, with both sides pouring money into the races. The lieutenant governor contest might be the most competitive, with the race earning national attention and unexpected endorsements. The Democratic candidate joined us last week; now, Republican candidate John Reid took the mic and discussed the campaign and the issues, including reproductive rights and school gender policies. Plus, we asked Reid about turning down the temperature on political rhetoric.Protests earlier this month prompted Prince George's County leaders to pause all data center development, with a promise to assess the impacts and gather more input from residents. The move comes four years after the Prince George's County Council voted unanimously to allow data centers to be built 'by right,' meaning for most sites, developers wouldn't need council approval. Now, leaders are reconsidering that process. We asked Prince George's County Councilmember Wanika Fisher for her thoughts. Send us a textThe Poet X was Elizabeth Acevedo's breakout novel, winning the Printz and Pura Belpre awards and becoming the target of many challenges and even a lawsuit attempting to keep it off of school shelves. We are standing firmly behind this book, even if it reduced Heather and Darlene to tears and maybe hasn't aged as well as it could have when it comes to Drake. We adore Xiomara's strength and resilience as she confronts family troubles, experiences a crisis of faith, weathers harassment at school, and navigates first love. We're discussing the ubiquity of harassment as a teen girl, the impacts of our parents' baggage, and whether Twin's going to have the kind of happy ending we are optimistic about for Xiomara. We're also taking a pretty strange quiz to find out what kind of poets we'd be, but really, we'd all probably just prefer to be really fab slam poets like Xiomara. Palace Intrigue delivers the most shocking royal revelation yet as Prince Harry secretly registers six-year-old Archie for Eton College—the same elite boarding school attended by Prince William, Harry himself, and future king Prince George. This explosive move suggests Harry plans to bring his son back to the UK despite the devastating family feud, with Archie potentially sharing classrooms with his royal cousins.Insiders reveal Harry feels his children are "missing out on the extensive family network" enjoyed by William's kids, though Meghan may need convincing about the plan. The security-heavy school would reunite the next generation of royals, with friends noting "statistically, Eton would be safer than an American school thanks to their gun laws."Meanwhile, royal biographer Ingrid Seward decodes Meghan's carefully chosen Harry birthday photo, suggesting she selected his "hunkiest" pre-marriage military image for strategic reasons. Plus, Harry's secret condolence visit to the Duke of Kent reveals his continued royal connections, while Spitting Image brutally satirizes the Sussex brand with puppet parodies of their Netflix ventures. From secret school plans to puppet mockery, this episode exposes Harry's desperate attempts to bridge two worlds while the royal war rages on.
What would you do if buying your dream home meant giving up your dog? In 2018, Cait Conroy and her husband were forced to confront Prince George's County, Maryland's decades-old “pit bull” breed ban when it threatened their beloved Poptart. That experience sparked Cait's ongoing advocacy — not just for her own dog, but for all dogs and pet parents impacted by this harmful law. In this episode, Cait and Ilona from the PG Pet Unity Project share the shocking history of why “pit bull” dogs were banned in PG County in the 1990s — and the deeper consequences this law has had on families, the animal welfare system and the dogs. From wasted taxpayer dollars to ineffective public safety outcomes, we dig into why breed-specific legislation fails families, communities and dogs. But there's hope: we'll talk about recently proposed Pit Bull Pilot Program, why momentum is growing to finally overturn the BSL now, and what it would mean for Maryland to leave this discriminatory policy behind. Welcome to season 7 of Rector's Cupboard! Do you sometimes feel like all we do is talk about America? While many Canadians would see Canada as distinct from the States, we are influenced by our neighbours to the south. In Alberta, the provincial government is supporting the banning of books. Some of the political and religious currents in Canada look very similar to those in the United States. In the first episode of our new season, we speak with a Canadian writer and professor who has described the relationship of the neo-charismatic Pentecostal movement and the rise of Donald Trump. André Gagné is Chair of the Department of Theological Studies at Concordia University in Montreal. He is also a host of Spirit, State and Society, a podcast exploring how the global Pentecostal and charismatic movements intersect with politics, culture and society. We speak with Gagné about his 2024 book, American Evangelicals for Trump: Dominion, Spiritual Warfare, and End Times. Gagné's book is enlightening if somewhat disturbing. His work speaks not only to the American context, it also brings to mind similarities and differences in Canada. If you'd like to find Gagné's work, such as his podcast and recent articles, you can check out his Concordia faculty page. Definitions: Expository Preaching – this style of preaching that seeks to detail the meaning and intent of a particular biblical passage. Articles Discussed: “A shadow war on libraries”, CBC The Fifth Estate, February 7, 2025 “New Alberta school books order bans explicit images of sexual acts”, CBC, September 8,2025 “Man arrested after driving child-size pink Barbie Jeep through Prince George, B.C.”, CBC, September 8, 2025 Tasting Notes: We kicked off the season with two tastings. The first was a lovely 15-Year-Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskey from Balblair Distillery, in the North of Scotland. For our second tasting we went a bit more local with Barrel-Aged Family Reserve Gin from Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery. This gin is not your typical gin. While we tasted it neat, if you wanted to mix this, Ken suggests trying a blueberry tea cocktail, with hot tea and an orange slice to bring out the citrus and oak notes in the gin.

With students across the region returning to class, local school superintendents discussed student safety, cell phone policies, and concerns over immigration enforcement. In Prince George's County, schools continue to deal with the fallout from the federal government freezing and then unfreezing millions of dollars in education funds. While funds are expected to be dispersed by next month, more federal cuts could be on the horizon. Interim Prince George's County Public Schools Superintendent Shawn Joseph joined the show to discuss the potential implications for Prince George's County schools. Plus, we discussed bus driver shortages, cell phone policies, test scores, and how schools are preparing for a possible increase in federal immigration enforcement.Joseph said the county experienced a decline in school attendance last year, and officials believe it's at least in part due to concerns about immigration enforcement. "43% percent of our students were out of school eighteen days or more, and it's significant within our immigrant population, and we think it's because of the fear of ICE and things happening," he said.Joseph said they are monitoring school attendance and want to send the message to the county's immigrant population that school remains a safe place.Fairfax County Public Schools, Virginia's largest school district, is also dealing with concerns over immigration enforcement. Superintendent Michelle Reid got behind the mic to talk about how Fairfax County schools are supporting students, families, and staff. Plus, FCPS is suing the U.S. Education Department in an effort to prevent the agency from freezing federal funding due to the district's gender policies. Superintendent Reid said the school system's current policy of allowing students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity is both legal and in the best interest of students."We felt and still feel strongly that our policy is in accordance both with Virginia and federal law. And it still is aligned with the Title IX principles currently on the books," she said. Reid said the millions the federal government is threatening to withhold go in part to fund free and reduced-price lunches. In today's episode of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, several high-profile stories were discussed. Cardi B was found not liable in a civil assault trial involving a former security guard, Emani Ellis, who accused the rapper of assault and emotional distress during a 2018 incident at a Beverly Hills OB/GYN clinic. The Los Angeles jury deliberated for about an hour before unanimously ruling in Cardi B's favor, rejecting claims that she spit on Ellis, physically assaulted her, or used racial slurs. Cardi B testified that while the argument became heated and intense, there was no physical contact. The jury sided with Cardi, clearing her of all civil liability. In other news, Porsha Williams has been granted another legal victory amid her ongoing divorce from Simon Guobadia. A judge ruled that the formal couple's prenuptial agreement would be enforced, meaning Williams will receive $40,000 per month in alimony for 15 months and have her legal fees paid. Lastly, authorities in Prince George's County, Maryland, are searching for 19-year-old DaCara Rose Thompson, who has been missing since August 22. Thompson was last seen getting out of her vehicle at a gas station in Lanham, and her car was later found in Hyattsville with her belongings inside. It's likely that the Washington Commanders will be leaving their current home in Prince George's County for a new stadium in the District. What would happen to the Northwest Stadium site? How about the land currently home to Six Flags, which is closing close to the end of the year? Prince George's County Executive Aisha Braveboy weighed in, saying the county is already preparing for the team's departure from the 200-acre-site. Redeveloping the land, Braveboy said, could be a boon. “We didn't really get to yield the kind of revenue that, let's say a National Harbor, yields for us. I mean, we make about 70 million off National Harbor and 14 million off the Commanders," she said.Braveboy also noted the redevelopment of the soon-to-be-closed Six Flags, which sits on 500 acres, could also provide additional tax revenue for the county. Arlington County was the first local jurisdiction in the region to end single-family-only zoning, but the county is now embroiled in a lawsuit over the change. As other counties and cities make similar moves, Arlington County Board member Maureen Coffey joined the show to share lessons learned and the challenges that lie ahead. The D.C. area is feeling the effects of the federal cuts and job losses as unemployment claims rise and layoffs increase. We asked County Board member Coffey what it means for local budgets and how Arlington County is preparing for an uncertain financial future. We also discussed the Arlington Housing Commission potentially asking the Virginia General Assembly to make it easier for houses of worship to build affordable housing on their land.Coffey said the legislation could be a win-win. "I think it's reasonable to look at these properties. Faith communities own a lot of property," Coffey said. "Faith attendance is down, and a lot of these congregations are really struggling to even keep up the properties that they do have." However, Coffey noted the bill would mandate all Virginia jurisdictions to allow for this type of development. Plus, we discussed President Trump's renewed threats for the federal government to take over policing the District.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org
Rebecca Dahl is a Prince George resident who is helping organize and support the Saddle Up N Sort Event. Saddle Up N Sort is saddling up once again for another action-packed Ranch Sorting event at the British Columbia Northern Exhibition (BCNE) this August 15th and 16th in Prince George. Organized by Rebecca Dahl, this fast-paced equine competition has become one of the highlights of the Fall Fair, attracting skilled riders and enthusiastic spectators from across British Columbia and Alberta.Ranch Sorting is a dynamic, high-energy sport rooted in traditional ranch work, now transformed into a competitive event that showcases precision, speed, and teamwork. In each round, a team of two horse-and-rider pairs have just 60 seconds to sort 10 head of numbered cattle from one pen to another in the correct order. It's a crowd-pleasing sport that blends strategy with horsemanship and brings the rugged charm of the ranch right into the arena.According to Dahl, the event is quickly gaining traction. “Last year, we sold out the maximum number of available spots, and this year, we're on track to do it again. It's a good problem to have!” she says. The growing popularity of Ranch Sorting makes it one of the fastest-rising western sports in North America, and Saddle Up N Sort is proud to bring that momentum to Prince George. In this podcast episode, Rebecca is joined by local community difference-maker, Caroline Perrin.

Send us a textWe are back with special-expert-guest-on-all-things-BSC Kelsey for Part 2. We're still talking about how arson isn't the answer; because really, arson isn't the answer and perhaps that wasn't addressed strongly enough in the books. In this continuation of our exploration of all things Mary Anne, we're figuring out foreshadowing that doesn't pay off, the prevalence of babysitting 101 classes, single-parent stigma, and why Mary Anne cares so much about her shoe falling off. Fashion is a really big deal in these books and we identified the primary fashion types: New York, quirky, Steve Jobs as a 12 year old with a visor. In part 2 we're trying to figure out where our fashion choices land us as BSC girls with a helpful Buzzfeed quiz. Send us a textWe are back with more Baby-Sitters Club books, y'all and one of these is all about banned books (and arson) so you know we couldn't keep it to just one episode. We're dissecting the poorly named Mary Anne Saves the Day, the aptly named Logan Likes Mary Anne, and the really burying the lede title, Mary Anne and the Library Mystery. We've got Kelsey back with us discussing everything from the OG covers to Mary Anne's creepy controlling father and yet again, Stacey's diabetes. There's really a lot going on in these three little books and we have feelings about all of them. We have questions too. Why does poor Logan have to audition for the BSC but Dawn doesn't? How many dances can one middle school have? Why oh why did the audiobook narrator make Logan sound like Foghorn Leghorn? Also, why is Mrs. Kishi so wound up about the We Love Book Banning group when she won't even stock Nancy Drews? We are desperately looking for answers to these questions and more in this trip down memory lane with Mary Anne Spier. Happy birthday to Prince George, who turns 12 today—and steps into a new phase of royal life. From now on, royal tradition dictates he can no longer travel with Prince William on official duties, in a move meant to safeguard the line of succession. As George grows up, so do the decisions about his future. All signs now point to Eton College as his next academic chapter. And when William becomes King, George is expected to inherit major titles—Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall—along with real responsibilities, including stewardship of a 67,000-acre estate. But one ancient custom may be off-limits. Reports suggest the royals may skip the grisly “blooding” ritual during summer hunts at Balmoral. While some insiders speculate George could be “initiated,” Princess Kate is said to have “put her foot down” on the matter. Also today: debunking a viral YouTube rumor that Prince William stripped Camilla's grandson of a title after an alleged bullying incident involving George. The story, based entirely on AI-generated clickbait, has zero evidence—and no basis in fact.Follow our new series Crown and Controversy! Follow now. In early 2009, two mother-daughter pairs were murdered just weeks apart in Prince George's County, Maryland. Karen and Karissa Lofton were found shot inside their home. Weeks later, Delores and Ebony Dewitt were discovered in a burning car. At first, the cases appeared unrelated — until a shocking lead revealed a connection to an unlikely suspect, exposing a chilling pattern of violence. The field of contenders to lead the Fort Worth Police Department as its next chief has been narrowed to four finalists. The finalists are Robert Alldredge, the interim chief of the Fort Worth Police Department; Eddie García, assistant city manager in Austin who retired as Dallas police chief last fall; Vernon Hale, a former Dallas deputy chief who now works as an assistant chief in Prince George's County, Md.; and Emada Tingirides, a deputy chief with the Los Angeles Police Department. In other news, the Trump administration's decision to freeze billions of dollars in education funding will leave Dallas schools with a $22 million gap; President Trump on Tuesday described Texas as the centerpiece in a plan to add Republican U.S. House seats by redrawing congressional boundaries in multiple states. Wringing five more Republican congressional seats from Texas would be a significant help to the party as it tries to preserve its razor-thin House majority; nd three quiet pools of water tucked between highways and neighborhoods along the Trinity River will now honor Dallas' Native American history. In a landmark act of cultural restoration, the Dallas City Council unanimously agreed last month to name these lakes with Native terms proposed by a grassroots intertribal committee. Funeral Home Owner Sentenced to 60 Years for Killing Pallbearer at Child's Burial A Maryland funeral home owner has been sentenced to prison for fatally shooting a pallbearer during the burial of a 10-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet in Washington, D.C. Wilson Wesley Chavis, 50, the owner of Compassion and Serenity Funeral Home, was convicted in February for the June 6, 2023 killing of 30-year-old Ronald Steven Banks. Banks, a family friend of the young victim, Arianna Miracle Davis, was helping carry her casket at the time of the incident. On Friday, a judge sentenced Chavis to 60 years in prison, with 25 years to be served and the remainder suspended. Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy called the sentencing “a clear and unequivocal message that we will not tolerate this kind of violence in our community.” The shooting occurred just before the burial began. According to police and court records, Chavis confronted two individuals associated with a rival funeral home—part of an ongoing business dispute. Witnesses say Chavis shouted profanities at a pastor and others at the graveside. When Chavis shoved the pastor, several attendees intervened, including Banks. Chavis then pulled out a handgun and shot Banks, who later died at a hospital. Another mourner was grazed by a bullet. Arianna's mother, Antionette Belk, expressed her heartbreak in an interview with NBC Washington, saying, "I'm so traumatized that this happened at my daughter's burial site. I didn't even get to lay her down, even to put her in the ground, and another incident happened," she said. "This is so traumatizing to me, my children, my whole family. It's trauma after trauma." Belk, a teacher and mother of four, said Chavis also shouted, “I own this body!” and spit on the pastor before fleeing the scene. He was stopped shortly afterward by a Morningside Police officer. Chavis later claimed he acted in self-defense. At the time of the shooting, Chavis had an active temporary peace order against him from the president of the rival funeral home due to alleged threats. He was convicted of second-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and reckless endangerment. Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? By World War 2, Prince George, AKA The Duke of Kent, had finally settled down and reformed his debaucherous, scandalous ways. In August of 1942, he was sent on a secret mission on a plane that crashed into the Scottish Highlands. To this day, no one knows why he was on that plane, who he was going to see, or what he was doing.
