In early 2009, two mother-daughter pairs were murdered just weeks apart in Prince George's County, Maryland. Karen and Karissa Lofton were found shot inside their home. Weeks later, Delores and Ebony Dewitt were discovered in a burning car. At first, the cases appeared unrelated — until a shocking lead revealed a connection to an unlikely suspect, exposing a chilling pattern of violence. The field of contenders to lead the Fort Worth Police Department as its next chief has been narrowed to four finalists. The finalists are Robert Alldredge, the interim chief of the Fort Worth Police Department; Eddie García, assistant city manager in Austin who retired as Dallas police chief last fall; Vernon Hale, a former Dallas deputy chief who now works as an assistant chief in Prince George's County, Md.; and Emada Tingirides, a deputy chief with the Los Angeles Police Department. In other news, the Trump administration's decision to freeze billions of dollars in education funding will leave Dallas schools with a $22 million gap; President Trump on Tuesday described Texas as the centerpiece in a plan to add Republican U.S. House seats by redrawing congressional boundaries in multiple states. Wringing five more Republican congressional seats from Texas would be a significant help to the party as it tries to preserve its razor-thin House majority; nd three quiet pools of water tucked between highways and neighborhoods along the Trinity River will now honor Dallas' Native American history. In a landmark act of cultural restoration, the Dallas City Council unanimously agreed last month to name these lakes with Native terms proposed by a grassroots intertribal committee. Funeral Home Owner Sentenced to 60 Years for Killing Pallbearer at Child's Burial A Maryland funeral home owner has been sentenced to prison for fatally shooting a pallbearer during the burial of a 10-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet in Washington, D.C. Wilson Wesley Chavis, 50, the owner of Compassion and Serenity Funeral Home, was convicted in February for the June 6, 2023 killing of 30-year-old Ronald Steven Banks. Banks, a family friend of the young victim, Arianna Miracle Davis, was helping carry her casket at the time of the incident. On Friday, a judge sentenced Chavis to 60 years in prison, with 25 years to be served and the remainder suspended. Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy called the sentencing “a clear and unequivocal message that we will not tolerate this kind of violence in our community.” The shooting occurred just before the burial began. According to police and court records, Chavis confronted two individuals associated with a rival funeral home—part of an ongoing business dispute. Witnesses say Chavis shouted profanities at a pastor and others at the graveside. When Chavis shoved the pastor, several attendees intervened, including Banks. Chavis then pulled out a handgun and shot Banks, who later died at a hospital. Another mourner was grazed by a bullet. Arianna's mother, Antionette Belk, expressed her heartbreak in an interview with NBC Washington, saying, "I'm so traumatized that this happened at my daughter's burial site. I didn't even get to lay her down, even to put her in the ground, and another incident happened," she said. "This is so traumatizing to me, my children, my whole family. It's trauma after trauma." Belk, a teacher and mother of four, said Chavis also shouted, “I own this body!” and spit on the pastor before fleeing the scene. He was stopped shortly afterward by a Morningside Police officer. Chavis later claimed he acted in self-defense. At the time of the shooting, Chavis had an active temporary peace order against him from the president of the rival funeral home due to alleged threats. He was convicted of second-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and reckless endangerment. Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? After that discussion that's when things began to evolve for Ricky. Having valuable experience and knowledge is beneficial, but its true worth is realized when shared with others, fostering growth, innovation, and collective progress. Without sharing, knowledge can become stagnant, and opportunities for learning and improvement are missed. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 8:30 Thanks for understand as we took time off! I watched Andor and The Resident. Chandra watched The Better Sister, Ludwig, Patience and Echo Valley. She recommends them all except for Echo Valley. We both love Murderbot. We talk about Anna Wintour's announcement that she's stepping down as editor for American Vogue. Chandra thinks Edward Enninful might have something to do with it. Wintour was in Venice for the Bezos Sanchez wedding. We know Sanchez's dress is going to be trashy. Royals: Minutes (8:30) to 29:45 We found Meghan's Confessions of a Female Founder podcast informative and inspirational. We wish we could get more AsEver raspberry spread. Chandra ordered two jars of apricot spread and I only ordered one. Some people have already received their AsEver orders. AsEver is releasing a rose wine on July first. That's Diana's birthday and a special anniversary for Harry and Meghan. Meghan has been steadily posting to social media. She's making the most headlines for a video from when she was pregnant and dancing in the hospital. It was funny and cute and the tabloids had a fit. Two reality stars at a King's Trust event recreated that dance on a staircase at the palace. You're not supposed to take personal photos or videos at royal receptions, but both the King's Trust and official Royal Family accounts commented positively on that post. We think it was a setup meant to mock Harry and Meghan but it just makes the Windsors look obsessed as usual. I play a clip from the Aspire podcast where Meghan explained why she posted that video. Camilla Tominey called it a “sexy slut drop,” which is ridiculous. This week we heard that Prince George will be going to his father and uncle's boarding school, Eton, in the fall of 2026. I looked through our archives and there are stories as far back as January, 2019 about Kate pushing for her three children to attend her alma mater, Marlborough. We assume she was forced to give in about George's school, but Louis and Charlotte are likely to go to Marlborough. Last weekend were the Royal Ascot horse races, probably the biggest social event of the year. Kate pulled out at the last minute. It was a big deal judging by the coverage. Palace staff were said to be “bewildered and worried” and a source told the Daily Beast that Kate was tired after Trooping the Colour and Garter Day and that she has good and bad days. We got several negative stories about Kate after that, mostly about how she disrespected the King, but also just rehashing older negative stories about her. There were stories hinting that she didn't feel well, which they should have focused on. Kate is reportedly planning to go to Wimbledon, which is from June 30th to July 13th. She usually goes at the end, but in 2023 she went early to sit with Roger Federer. Hello Magazine has a cover story about Kate with the title “On her own terms.” I put it on Instagram and the aspect ratio makes it say “On her own.” Chandra had two tweets about Kate which went viral this week. It feels like the palace and press are turning on Kate. She might be quite sick, but they play fast and loose with the truth and the royals minimize illness, so it's hard to tell. Chandra remembers how Princess Anne's traumatic brain injury was swept under the rug and how she returned to work with bruises. Harry and William are covering US Magazine, and the article is about how William is mad Harry isn't his scapegoat anymore. It's part of William's embiggening campaign as he tells us about his plans to be king, and it sounds like he can't wait for his father to die. The press freaked out about Harry saying he didn't know how much longer Charles has, but had only a mild response to William. Comments of the Week: Minutes 29:45 to end Kaiser's comment of the week is from Lover on the post about Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson kissing on red carpets. My comment of the week is from Henny Penny on the post about Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos's tacky wedding. Thanks for listening bitches!

The District is preparing for the military parade celebrating the Army's 250th anniversary and falls on President Trump's 79th birthday. The procession features thousands of soldiers and 70-ton tanks and will require roads to close around the city as well as DCA airport. City officials are worried about what all of this heavy machinery could mean for local streets and infrastructure. At-Large D.C. Councilmember Christina Henderson joined the show to weigh in.Plus, she discussed the Council wanting more time to approve the RFK stadium deal. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser included a billion dollars for a new Washington Commanders football stadium in her proposed budget, which she unveiled late last month. The Mayor has said the Council needs to approve the deal and the budget by July 15, or the city risks the team backing out.But some councilmembers, including Henderson, wants to deal with RFK stadium separately. She said six weeks isn't enough time to review the complex deal."We need the opportunity to do due diligence. And what I would say to the Commanders, if they're listening, is that I would say the vast majority of my colleagues have not said no," Henderson said, "And it is in your best interest that we get this right."Last week, Prince George's County elected Aisha Braveboy in a special election for county executive. The county's former State's Attorney got behind the mic to discuss her top priorities, including the need to unify the county government. She said she's in alignment with the council and has an excellent relationship with the school board. Another focus of her administration will be getting local government agencies on the same page, especially when it comes to telework policies."You know, it's very different from agency to agency, which I think creates a morale issue. It also creates a productivity issue," Braveboy said. "And I want people to be more oriented to come into the office to work collaboratively with their colleagues and also serve the public a little bit more efficiently."Plus, Braveboy discussed the resignation of Prince George's County Schools Superintendent Millard House and her naming Shawn Joseph as the interim as a nationwide search gets under way.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

Send us a textWow. Truly, we are so glad we took a detour to the affluent and completely bananas town of Sweet Valley, California to meet Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield. These books have everything: an evil twin, a greaser who carjacks people and takes them to dive bars, an art teacher named Stuart who has no boundaries, and a lie detector test that measures your pulse with a thimble. In this episode we dive into books 1 and 57 of the enormous Sweet Valley High series, Double Love and Teacher Crush. Who knew books about high school sororities (?!?) and mandatory electives could be so compelling? In this episode of TBMM, we play the vintage SVH board game, learn about Hawa's twinness, hear about Hannah's faux twinness, and Hawa implies that Heather is 60. These books are really struggling to pass the Bechdel test, but we kind of love them. There are no deep themes, beautiful writing, or well developed characters here, folks, just teen soap opera nonsense that you can't put down. These Books Made Me is a podcast about the literary heroines who shaped us and is a product of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System podcast network. Her early years were marked by a love for sports and a strong sense of community. While in high school, she was an active member of both the volleyball and basketball teams, finding joy and confidence through athletic competition and teamwork. However, her high school journey took a difficult turn when she faced bullying that deeply affected her well-being. Ultimately, Elora made the tough decision to leave in-person schooling in order to protect her mental health. While this choice helped her find a more supportive learning environment, it also meant letting go of her beloved team sports and the camaraderie they offered. It was a challenging period that tested her resilience but also sparked a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.Throughout her life, Elora has shared a close bond with her father, especially through their mutual love of cinema. Some of her fondest memories are of evenings spent watching martial arts movies together—an experience that not only strengthened their relationship but also inspired her admiration for discipline, strength, and storytelling.Currently, Elora is in her third year at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), working diligently toward her goal of becoming a teacher. Passionate about education and personal empowerment, she hopes to one day create classrooms that are safe, inclusive, and inspiring—spaces where all students feel seen and supported, especially those who may be struggling in silence. In the summer of 2022, Elora discovered Taekwondo, a sport that would come to redefine her life. What began as a way to stay active quickly blossomed into something much deeper. The Taekwondo community welcomed her with open arms, offering not just physical training but a profound sense of belonging. Through the friendships she's formed and the lessons she's learned on the mat, Elora has gained confidence, focus, and emotional strength. Taekwondo has become more than a sport for her—it's a second family and a powerful source of growth, healing, and purpose.Elora's journey is one of quiet strength, resilience, and transformation. Whether in the classroom, on the mat, or in her day-to-day life, she continues to embrace challenges with courage and compassion, driven by a deep desire to uplift others and lead by example.

Kate Ames is the Owner and Operator of Baller Foods. Chef Kate grew up foraging, fishing, and camping in Terrace, British Columbia. From a young age, she was drawn more to the arts than the sciences. In high school, she took “easy” academic classes like English and French correspondence during the summer to free up her schedule for the subjects she loved most—foods, choir, band, art, yearbook, and theatre.Kate began cooking at a young age after moving out and getting married at just 18. Her culinary journey started with a dishwasher job at a fishing lodge and evolved through roles at KFC, Pizza Hut, Denny's, and Mr. Mikes. By the age of 20, she was managing both a Subway and a hotel pub.At 23, Kate moved to Vancouver to study graphic design and marketing at Emily Carr University and BCIT. She went on to freelance for over 15 years with her former business, Ames Design Studio, and held marketing and graphic design positions at the PG Free Press and the Northern Health Authority. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Kate experienced major life upheavals, including the loss of childcare, employment, her design business, and her late partner. With resilience and passion, she pivoted toward her lifelong dream of owning a food truck. Leveraging her background in marketing and design, she launched Baller Food, a business born of both creativity and necessity.Kate began by making meatballs in the kitchen of Birch and Boar, where she found mentorship and support from chef and owner William Miller. Using guerrilla marketing tactics, she sold meatballs on the streets of downtown Prince George and gradually built a following. Over two years, she vended at community events, music festivals, weddings, and schools, eventually expanding into a full-fledged food truck operation.Since then, it's been “balls to the wall.” From May to October, Kate focuses on contract events, travels to northern B.C. music festivals—including Valhalla and Riverboat Days in Terrace, Midsummer in Smithers, ArtsWells near Quesnel, and Robson Valley Music Festival in Dunster—and serves outlying communities such as Quesnel, Vanderhoof, and Mackenzie. She also continues to grow retail sales, with products now available at PG Urban Shroomery and soon at Blackwood Gifts. To improve visibility, Kate has partnered with CO-OP and Superstore and has a regular setup at the Chevron Cardlock in the BCR site. She posts her monthly event schedule and weekly updates on Facebook and Instagram, encouraging followers to set alerts so they never miss where she'll be parked. In the off-season (October to May), Baller Food shifts its focus to hot lunch programs at local schools, event catering, and hot-and-ready meals. This fall, Kate will also launch cooking classes for kids at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre, continuing her mission to nourish and inspire the community through food.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser proposed repealing Initiative 82 earlier this week, reigniting the fight over D.C.'s tipped minimum wage law. But given that voters passed the measure twice, the mayor could have trouble getting support from the D.C. Council. Chairman Phil Mendelson got behind the mic to give his thoughts. He said overturning Initiative 82 again is politically difficult for the council. "I have to see where the members are going to be," Mendelson said. "And at the moment, I don't think the members are supporting repeal." He said he still opposes I-82, but he is going to leave it to Mayor Bowser to take the lead in lobbying his council colleagues. We also asked about the mayor's proposed deal with the Washington Commanders. The nearly $4 billion deal to build a new football complex as well a large area of development at the RFK stadium, with the city contributing just over a billion dollars. Mendelson has opposed taxpayer funding for such projects in the past. We asked what would sweeten the deal for him and skeptical council colleagues, who ultimately need to approve the deal.  If the agreement gets the green light, the Washington Commanders would depart their Prince George's County home. County leaders have long prepared for the possibility. Prince George's County Council President Edward Burroughs weighed in and tells us what options could be on the table for the site. Developers are already pitching county leaders on what's next. "I have seen some of the proposals, some of their renderings, and they honestly look a lot better than the stadium, to be quite honest with you," Burroughs said. "And so it's, still in the early stages, but we look forward to working with them." The Commanders have entered an agreement with Prince George's County to demolish the old stadium within 90 days of the team's first home game at the new site.In addition, the county also looks likely to lose the new FBI headquarters. Also, we asked him why the closing of Six Flags in Bowie is a big deal, and how the county is planning to make up a $170 million budget shortfall.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

The brutal murders of Rachel Morin and now Lesbia Ramirez highlight, from a conservative viewpoint, the consequences of Maryland’s pro-illegal alien stance. In both cases, the suspects are believed to be illegal immigrants with violent criminal histories who were able to remain in the U.S. due to weak immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies in the state. The tragic loss of lives at the hands of illegal aliens in Maryland underscores the dangers of lax immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies. Maryland’s status as a sanctuary state, with counties like Montgomery and Prince George's openly refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, creates an environment where illegal immigrants can evade accountability and law enforcement. For that reason it has become Ground Zero for illegal alien crime. By providing access to driver's licenses, in-state tuition, and limiting ICE detainers, the state arguably incentivizes illegal entry and shields those who may pose a threat to public safety. These policies, prioritize political correctness over the safety of American citizens, leading to preventable crimes and devastating consequences for families across the state. "Maryland Dad" Narrative DEBUNKED; Trump Drops the Hammer on Harvard | Ep 434

Franklin Graham delivered the prayer service at the White House Easter prayer service and dinner. President Trump declared "It will always be In God We Trust. We will never change that… With God's help, we can overcome every challenge, triumph over every evil, and restore the spirit of faith in the United States.” Restoring the spirit of faith in America is a stark contrast from Biden's proclamation of Transgender Visibility day on Easter just last year. The Left is once again wrapped up in their obsession of celebrating bad guys, this time around its Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Senator Chris Van Hollen failed to secure a meeting with deported immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia in his attempt to bring Garcia "home." AOC and Cory Booker are singing the same tune but unfortunately for them, Abrego is home, as he is a citizen of El Salvador. Even more, the Prince George county gang unit identified him as gang member back in 2019. The Trump administration obliterated the Senator from Maryland when they brought in angel mom Patty Morin to share how Senator Van Hollen never even acknowledged her daughter, Rachel Morin, when she was murdered by an illegal immigrant. The IRS is looking to strip Harvard of its tax-exempt status because Harvard is choosing to be a nesting ground for anti-semitism and woke radical lunatics. Letitia James may face jail time for mortgage fraud of all things, her vengeful campaign against President Trump included his real estate dealings, while she herself was guilty the entire. The Mecca Business Learning Institute is Montgomery County, Maryland,'s second officially-approved public charter school project and expected to open its doors for the Fall 2025 school year. The school is reporting strong interest from families but as of a few weeks ago the school building was not ready, staff had not been hired, negotiations with the teachers and staff unions incomplete, and finances overly dependent on the county disbursements. Montgomery has long resisted public charter schools even as Washington DC, Prince George's County, and Baltimore have embraced the idea. Sunil Dasgupta talked with founders LaChaundra Graham and Tracey Cooper about their model and the prospects for opening on time for the next school year.
