Can you imagine a time when a U.S. President and a Canadian Prime Minister were friends? ... And said nice things about each other in public? ... And the nice things they said about each other in public were neither remarkable nor newsworthy? Well, here's proof that such a time once existed: "The fact that we go on, we got along, President Reagan and Prime Minister Mulroney, two some said Irish, we were Irish, now that I think of it, and we became friends. But more to the point. We recognized the importance of getting along. It sent a positive message not only to our senior officials and our governments to work together, but to the people of Canada and the United States." That was the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada ... April 5th 1993 ... At a tribute in his honor ... Hosted by Ronald Reagan ...The event was held in Simi Valley California at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Not used to hearing such language? Want to hear Brian Mulroney say more lovely things about Ronald Reagan — and hear Ronald Reagan say lovely things about Brian Mulroney? Then listen to the latest episode of C-SPAN's podcast "The Weekly." Remembering when Canada and the United States were partners in trade — and partners in friendship. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The following statement was taken from Aaron Gunn's Twitter feed - I am firmly opposed to Putin's heinous and illegal actions in Ukraine, and his oppression of the Russian people within Russia. I have held and articulated these views publicly for years. In early 2014, when I was still in my early 20s, I made foolish comments about Putin and Ukraine. I stopped holding those views a long time ago. Canada must support Ukraine in their defence against Russia's illegal invasion, including by building pipelines to tidewater to displace Russian oil and gas and stop the funding of Putin's war machine. A point I have made consistently in documentaries and viral videos since their second illegal invasion in 2022. Conservatives have a proud history of supporting Ukraine. It was under a Conservative government (Brian Mulroney) that on December 2, 1991, Canada became the first Western country to recognize Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union. Conservatives were the ones who successfully negotiated the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement. Stephen Harper led the charge to kick Russia out of the G7 following their invasion of Crimea. I'm proud to continue this legacy of support for Ukraine as they continue their fight against Russia's illegal invasion.

Back when North American free trade was still just an idea, Liberal leader John Turner opposed it. He warned that handing over the "economic levers" could lead to a loss of Canada's political independence. Brian Mulroney won the election and free trade brought Canada all kinds of prosperity. But now? Well, we explore why Turner's ideas are having an "I told you so" moment.

On September 11, 2002, the first anniversary of 9/11, we took the show to New York City for a Corus radio network broadcast where we rented studio space at WOR radio. Americans repeatedly told us how grateful they were Canadians had come to share the day with them. RGS producer Rick Zamperin and I walked the perimeter of St. Paul's Chapel, across the street from where the World Trade Center buildings had stood. St. Paul's was undamaged in the terror attack and thousands of people had placed memorial messages on the iron fence surrounding the chapel. One in particular remains seared in memory. A piece of cardboard on which, in a child's writing, were the words "I love you Daddy." - Rick decided to engage on his adventures in NYC where there was concern of a possible repeat terror attack. He attended a NY Yankees game and visited the observation deck of the Empire State Building. Our first guest on the national broadcast was former prime minister Brian Mulroney. Today's podcast: Trudeau remains silent on his plans concerning the Liberal Party of Canada caucus revolt against his leadership. Guest: Ujjal Dosanjh. Former BC premier and federal Liberal Party health minister More on Trudeau's silence, with a special Liberal Party national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday. MPs are set to confront Trudeau on his unwillingness (so far) to resign as PM. Guest: Brian Lilley, Post Media columnist. Since the beginning of the RGS our go-to guest on issues concerning the Canadian justice system, Correctional Service Canada and the Parole Board of Canada has been a former Alberta crown attorney, executive director of the Canadian Police Association, senior policy advisor to a federal Minister of Public Safety, Scott Newark. In the 90's this included so-called "Club Fed" prisons like Ferndale in B.C. which included a 9 hole golf course inmates were allowed to use. In recent years the Canadian justice system has come under significant criticism for the easy (instant) parole granted dangerous individuals, for the moving of convicted serial rapist, kidnapper and murderer Paul Bernardo from a maximum to medium-security prison. We took our program inside two federal prisons, Joyceville and Warkarth, for live shows with the inmates committees. At Joyceville, we asked the inmates committee what would happen to Clifford Olson, British Columbia serial child/youth murderer if he were transferred into the general population of the prison, as Olson had been requesting. The chairman of the committee said bluntly "he would be murdered." Today an encore presentation of an episode that originally aired on March 5th. When Brian Mulroney passed last week so did an era in Canadian politics. But did some of the lessons of leadership that he possessed carry on to new generations of leadership? Conservative James Moore and Liberal Gerald Butts carry on their non partisan conversations on The Bridge, started in 2022, this week with the Mulroney legacy as the topic.
As we have been sharing with you all month, we gathered at the Reagan Library on June 5, 2024, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passing of President Reagan. The day was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our 40th President's legacy and its enduring impact to this day and beyond. We began with a special ceremony to honor this 20-year milestone. From there, we heard from many who served in the Reagan Administration, discussing both his domestic and foreign policies, and how they continue to shape the world. We concluded the day with a special after dinner conversation with Peggy Noonan and the children of two of President Reagan's closest friends and allies on the world stage, Margaret Thatcher and Brian Mulroney. In today's Reagan Forum Podcast we focus on our keynote fireside chat. When talking about President Reagan's legacy, it is impossible to not intertwine it with his allies and his friends. Including former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Three greats who are now gone. Gone—and missed more than ever, as the world longs for their unique brand of decisive, principled leadership. In our final reflection on the life, death and legacy of President Ronald Reagan, we were so deeply honored that two children of these leaders agreed to be a part of our program. In our keynote fireside chat, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Peggy Noonan sat down in conversation with Carol Thatcher and Ben Mulroney. No one else could possibly offer a perspective like theirs on two of President Reagan's greatest allies.
The last time a Conservative won a federal vote in the riding of Toronto-St. Paul's, it was 1988. The Soviet Union was still together. Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister. The territory of Nunavut wouldn't be created for more than a decade. But on Monday, in a by-election in the riding, the Conservatives took the Liberal stronghold riding back for the first time in over thirty years. Does this spell electoral doom for the Liberals? Where does the party go from here? And despite his insistence that he'll stay on, can Justin Trudeau really remain the party leader? John Paul Tasker is a senior reporter with CBC's parliamentary bureau.
Today we have two special guests. Sandra Zisckind from Diamond & Diamond Lawyers is on to talk about a catch if you want to buy a Birkin Bag or other high end item. Mr D from the new @Night radio show makes his annual appearance on After 9. Plus Missed Connections! We also talk about the amount of households cutting their cable, Brian Mulroney's funeral, and rumours about the end of Marineland. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Brian Mulroney, Canada's 18th Prime Minister, has died at the age of 84.He had an incredibly eventful nine-year tenure, from 1984 to 1993, at a time when the governments in the U.S. and the U.K. were shifting towards more deregulation and privatization. He was a champion of free trade, his work on the Canada-U.S free trade agreement, and NAFTA later, had an indelible impact on Canada's economy, but was also met with a lot of criticism along the way.Today, Peter Mansbridge, who covered much of Mulroney's time in office, is here to talk about his legacy.
