House of Barbrism is three queer podcasts in one: ADVENTURES IN GAYBYSITTING, CLOSET PRACTICE, and DOCUMENTA AND SON. From relationships to parenting to culture to sex, it's all in our house! ADVENTURES IN GAYBYSITTING (alternating Mondays), hosted by gay New York dad Documenta Barbrism and bi L.A. mom Shannon Corder, chronicles the highs and lows of coming out of the closet and having your first baby at the age of 40. CLOSET PRACTICE (alternating Mondays) is an opportunity for queers of all stripes to share their stories, whether they're in, out, or out-curious. In DOCUMENTA AND SON (every Thursday), newly out gay dad Documenta tries to mentor his newly out bi son Dingle Mary on the ins and outs of queer life, and occasionally even succeeds! Since I started House of Barbrism last fall, a lot of people have been asking about my closet and coming out experiences. Like the cocktease I am, I've revealed bits of it here and there but figured it was high time to do so a little more formally. I published a slightly longer version of this piece in the recent issue of the Signal House Edition and read it here with their kind permission. Covid didn't manage to kill the new Broadway musical Flying Over Sunset, about fancy folk taking LSD in the 50s, but would we all have been better off if it had? The jury is still out, but we have...thoughts on the matter. From a poor, f*cked-up childhood in Bristol, England to the top of the world in Hollywood, Grant oozed sex, charisma, and effortless charm. We love him; you love him. Everyone loves him! Documenta Barbrism and Dingle Mary honor the late, capital-G Great Stephen Joshua Sondheim. This was one of the most difficult, and fun, episodes to record yet. There's so much to say about the endlessly rich and inventive body of work Sondheim left behind, and we'll be saying it for years to come. For now, we highlight our favorite Sondheim shows and songs (and argue over the merits of "Someone in a Tree") and share stories about how this trailblazing gay artist has changed our lives. This is Closet Practice, a podcast for queers of all stripes to share their stories, whether they're in, out, or out-curious. You can take queer life out of the closet, but you can't take the closet out of queer life. Maybe, though, we can shine a little light inside. After weeks of aggravating c*ckteasery, the outside has finally committed to that drab pre-snow mid-Atlantic winter, when the only thing sludgier than the grass is the anemic sky. So it was a real pleasure to step into Sam's house, which they have made warm and welcoming despite having just moved in. No bathroom door yet, but a Murphy bed exquisitely hand-painted by Sam and room enough to practice their art, yoga, and dancing. They are a jack of all trades and a master of none, but like Sam themself pointed out in a segment that didn't make the final edit, the original saying finishes, “but oftentimes better than a master of one.” This rang true to me; I don't know if it's a reaction to the profound feelings of worthlessness the world piles on us, or if we're just better, but this insatiable pursuit of something beautiful to fill our lives seems to be part of the blessing and curse of queerness. It's not ours alone; even the breeders stumble into grace occasionally. But they don't do it with our style, or our urgency. This 90s Pultizer- and Tony-winning classic, in revival now at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, earned billions for straight creator Jonathan Larson's estate by billing itself as THE standard for gritty, authentic portrayals of life with AIDS, even though Larson stole its queer narrative elements from writer Sarah Schulman, only to sideline and caricature them to make the play more palatable for mainstream audiences. But damn, those songs...We do our best to untie this tricky knot this week by discussing Signature's revival, Schulman's book Stagestruck: Theater, AIDS, and the Marketing of Gay America, and Netflix's new film adaptation of Larson's autobiographical musical tick, tick... The very day Kyle's episode came out a couple weeks ago, he sent me the following text: “My dad wants to record. He loved the episode.” “SHUT THE F*CK UP GURL NO HE DOES NOT” I responded with my customary sangfroid, to which Kyle said, “Like hardcore wants to.” He put us in touch and I'm so glad he did. As always with me, it's for mostly selfish reasons. Even the most casual visitor to House of Barbrism knows that I am a recently out gay dad trying to help my bi son flourish in a world that is manifestly different than the one in which I grew up, so I was eager to hear about Icon's experiences, especially because, as you'll hear, not just one of his sons is queer, not two, but all three. Some girls have all the luck. I had a great time talking with Icon. He seems so comfortable in his own skin, which I envy. My favorite part of our chat is probably his humble brag that young guys find him attractive. His confidence would be obnoxious were it not so endearing. And, let's be honest, deserved. This week we discuss the work of the fabulous, unsung painter, poet, critic, and theorist Jesse Murry. Though Murry died of AIDS-related complications in 1993 and faded into relative obscurity, his work is getting a second life through a recent exhibition at David Zwirner in NYC and the publication of Painting is a Supreme Fiction: Writings by Jesse Murry, 1980-1993 by Soberscove Press. Murry's deceptively simple abstract paintings and lucid critical writing allow us to ask what queerness looks, sounds, tastes, and smells like.
