The new book The Conspiracists: Women, Extremism, and the Lure of Belonging by Noelle Cook offers an unusually intimate look at why seemingly bizarre conspiracy worlds that involve starseeds, ascended masters, and shadowy cabals are powerfully compelling even when they damage the lives of believers. Rather than taking a detached academic approach, Cook traces how white, middle-aged women were pulled deeper into conspiratorial belief systems in the years leading up to and after January 6, through online communities, the pandemic, personal upheaval, and a New Age spiritual subculture fused with far-right politics. The book follows Cook's long, complicated relationship with two women in particular: Yvonne St. Cyr and Tammy Butry. Yvonne, from Idaho, sought structure in the Marines after a turbulent childhood, then found a home in the world of conspirituality, where politics becomes divine destiny and January 6 becomes a “spiritual war.” Tammy, from Pennsylvania, carries a history of trauma and instability, including seeing how the real-world betrayal of the “Kids for Cash” scandal harmed her children, making QAnon's “save the children” framing feel emotionally plausible. The 1956 book When Prophecy Fails describes one of the most famous case studies in social psychology. The researchers Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter covertly joined a small, apocalyptic UFO group, observing how members prepared, including quitting jobs, giving away possessions, and severing ties with skeptics. According to the book, when the group's predicted disaster did not occur, instead of simply abandoning their beliefs, many core members strengthened their commitment and actively sought new converts. But it didn't actually happen like that. In truth, Festinger and his fellow researchers glossed over evidence that contradicted their thesis and actively influenced the UFO group to get the result they wanted. This is the discovery of our guest Thomas Kelly. By combing through newly unsealed materials from Festinger's archives, UFO and occult magazines of the 1950s, later writings by group leader Dorothy Martin, he discovered crucial information that was omitted by the original book. Kelly detailed his startling findings in a paper published in the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences titled Debunking “When Prophecy Fails.” Travis interviews Kelly to discuss the real story behind When Prophecy Fails, the possible consequences of invalidating Festinger's study, and how his work fits in the wider “replication crisis” in experimental psychology. Jason Shurka, the brains behind the multi-million dollar operation, used the funds to bankroll a brand new streaming platform, Unifyd TV, whose offerings include documentaries made by QAnon promoters. According to the promoters of this quack cure, their work is approved by a secret society of powerful entities who are dedicated to elevating humankind called “The Light Systems” cabal or “TLS.” One member of The Light Systems, a figure called “Ray,” is regularly filmed while wearing a face-concealing hoodie and gloves in order to preserve his anonymity in interviews with Shurka available on Unifyd TV.
