One of my fave guest/friends, Kate Maruyama, rejoins the show to celebrate her wonderful new novel, ALTERATIONS (Running Wild Press)! We talk about the book's long gestation/publishing history, Kate's love of old Hollywood & costume design, closeted movie stars and how she told the story of a gay relationship in the '30s & '40s, and how it felt to write a non-horror horror story. We get into her own Hollywood experience in the '90s, how it informs Alterations, and how it felt to repeatedly smash into the glass ceiling, as well as how ghosts creep into everything she writes, how older people become invisible but have stories to tell, and how important it was to have a champion in Toni Ann Johnson for this novel. We also discuss present-moment Los Angeles, the craft book about novella-writing she's co-writing, the need to decolonize her writing students, the (maybe non-existent) influence of Jodie Foster's Home For The Holidays on Alterations, the essay she wrote around the decline & death of her mother, Kit Reed, and more. Whenever we travel, we love to come HOME. After a long day of school, work, and errands....HOME is the place we all want to be! At home is a place we can relax, let our gaurds down, feel safe, comfortable, and at peace. Maybe it's not necessarily your "home" that you feel this place, but if you have a "happy place" those feelings are the same. You feel safe. Sometimes going home, or to our happy place, isn't always possible, but the good news is we can access those feelings of home by a few simple practices! Every day our bodies go through what is called the stress response where we experience heightened levels of stress, and then our bodies try to recover. By us accessing our "HOME" base, we are better able to recover! One of the ways we can be proactive in our stress response recovery and make getting home easier is taking care of the 5 pillars of living well. Sleep, nutrition and hydration, movement, sunlight, and connection. Taking care of these will prepare us in advance for the stress responses that will come. Next, breathe. Just breathing will give us the reset that we need. Then, access a point on your body, an anchor point, that you notice you use to self-soothe.  Maybe it's rubbing your thigh or your hands, playing with your hair or a piece of clothing.  These are ways your body is self-soothing.  If we think about our HOME base, and the feelings of home as we touch these points, our bodies will relax and feel the same feeling as if we are at HOME. We dive into this in today's podcast as we discus being HOME for the holidays! Listen In!

Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:46  Hi, Be It babe. Okay, it is that Friday after Thanksgiving here in the States, and instead of doing wins, I wanted to do some gratitude. So I wanted to take a moment and to share my gratitude for you, and also for this podcast. So it's not a solo episode, because it's gonna be quick and short, and I'll still have a mantra. Lesley Logan 1:07  But, Thanksgiving holiday is always a lot. I used to work in retail, okay? And so what that meant is a really slow several days. Couldn't go home for Thanksgiving because I had to be at work at eight in the morning the day after, and literally work until the mall closed. There was just no leaving and just not really enjoy the holiday, because all of my friends traveled. I lived in Southern California, and so from the 2001 to 2009 I did never have a Thanksgiving, and so I would just literally eat Chinese food, the gluten free version, and kind of be at home. And I'd watch Home For The Holidays, which is a great movie if you've never watched. It's a Thanksgiving movie, and it just used to make me laugh, because the family is like so many nuances. There's so much drama and there's so much stuff, and even in all of the chaos and all the family dynamics and all this stuff, there's like gratitude in there. And so now I don't really work the week of Thanksgiving. Have a couple things I had to do end of the week, but really from Wednesday on, except for, like, some social media stuff to remote the sales that we have, Brad and I get to just spend it thinking about our family and thinking about what we're grateful for, and thinking about the friends in our life, and then we go and support small businesses on Saturday. We get all of our Christmas shopping done, and we try to do it using small businesses as much as possible. Obviously, sometimes our friends and family want things that are not at small businesses, but that's what our goal is. Lesley Logan 2:34  And I share those with you because in this moment, I'm so grateful for you. I do not take lightly that you use some of your minutes of your day to spend with me and the guests that I bring on. And not every guest is going to be enlightening and change your world, but if it even gives you insight on someone else's world, that, to me, is a huge win, and I'm very grateful if it gives you some insight on some ways to be empathetic to people who are different than you, then that is a win, and I'm grateful for that. And if it allows you to go, oh my God, that's what's been holding me back, then I am so grateful. And that is a win. Lesley Logan 3:11  And so you know, as this podcast is hitting three and a half years at the end of this year. Holy moly. And we are so many episodes. And this is episode 453 I mean, I feel like we just listened to Episode 400 so the fact that there's been 53 more, I learn new things that (inaudible) these guests. And so some of, this podcast was selfishly started because I struggle to be it till I see it. I sometimes start to worry about what other people will think, or what could go wrong, or maybe we should do this, because that's what's working for other people. And sometimes I can doubt things. And so this podcast forces me to be it till I see it, because I would be out of alignment and integrity. And my hope is that this podcast is a reminder to you that for the person you want to be, for the thing that you want to do, for the things you want in this life, first of all, it's all possible, and second of all, it comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and being it until you see it, from taking your goals that you have and working backwards and then acting as if it's already happened, and trusting the process, and not in the way that you're doing the secret, But in the way that I'm going to take action towards this thing that I want, and I'm going to be the person who would have the thing that I want already. And then between those two things, between the being it, and then also action, I'm going to ditch some of that fear and ditch that imposter syndrome, and I'm going to truly make these things happen, and it's been really cool to watch and hear from so many of you who listen on how different episodes have helped you be it till you see it. So, thank you. Lesley Logan 4:52  Thank you to the team who puts this together. Could not do this without you. Thank you to my friends and family who are the first listeners. Who helped get this off the ground. And thank you to all of our guests who have taken time out of your busy life to let me ask you questions. And thank you to you for listening, no matter which episodes or how many episodes you've listened to. So this is your first one. Hi. Thank you. And my big ask is that you send in some wins as this year wraps up, I want to celebrate them with you, and you share this with a friend. It doesn't have to be this episode, but share your favorite episode with a friend, and I'm going to say thank you in advance. Thank you so much. Lesley Logan 5:33  If you are sitting here listening to this and you are working today because you were like me, and you were having to work in retail and or your job just requires you. You have so much work to do, and you wish you were taking today off. Write that down, and let's see how we can be it till we see it. You have a year from now to get this day off. So what do we have to do to help you do that? And maybe we can get you half a day off, right? Maybe we can, like, get you the morning off. That's fine, but let's start now. And anytime you're like, oh, it must be nice for them, that is a sign that you wish you had it. So let's pick a date on the future and work backwards. Let's do it together. Thank you so very much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Lesley Logan 6:14  And here is your mantra for the weekend. I could not let you go. It's just the gratitude you have to hear a mantra. So here it is. When I speak my needs, I receive them abundantly. Oh, that's perfect for today. When I speak my needs, I receive them abundantly. When I speak my needs, I receive them abundantly. My love, speak your needs, especially on today, and then enjoy the abundance that comes to you. You can have what you want. So take that messy action and Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 6:45  That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. It's our November tradition! This week, we're replaying a special Thanksgiving episode of our show. ==== We know you don't all celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving, but it's never a bad idea to express gratitude and devote a day to being cozy. In that spirit, we've made a little gift for you to show our appreciation. Watching the movie ‘Home for the Holidays' is an annual Thanksgiving tradition in our house. The film is based on a brilliant short story by Chris Radant that is, sadly, out of print. Both the story and the film tell the tale of a family Thanksgiving in all of its gluttonous, annoying, loving glory. It's a celebration of affection, patience, and forgiveness. Since you can't get the story as an audiobook, Mel went into our blanket fort recording booth to read the story out loud, and then Dave worked some editing magic. Boom! We made our first homegrown ‘audiobook.' We're grateful you've all joined us on our Strong Sense of Place reading-traveling adventures. We hope you enjoy the story!
