Episode XXI: Life as the MLS Pool Goalkeeper with Charlie Lyon we chat with Charlie about the uncertainty of life as a professional soccer player. This topic is particularly relevant for, as Charlie describes it, "the utility goalkeeper" for any team in Major League Soccer. In this position, Charlie can essentially be chosen by any club at any time to come in and train or play on a moments notice. Charlie discusses finding normalcy amongst such an ever changing lifestyle, preparation for life after soccer, his short stint working for a logging company and many other topics. Josel and Eric break down how happiness and comfortability play into this dynamic and touch upon the idea of keeping the main thing, the main thing. The question is, what is the main thing? Is the main thing our career? Our side hustle? Our education? Maybe focusing on yourself in general is the main thing? Is it possible our attempts to do everything lead us to do nothing? The book references the fear of failure that so many of us deal with and we break down some of David Goggin's main points from the second half of Can't Hurt Me. On Episode XVI: Being Uncommon Amongst the Uncommon, Josel and Eric discuss just that. The motivation for this episode comes from Chatper 9 of Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins. We dive into how each of us relate to being uncommon, how it can benefits us individually, socially as well as the complexities that arise with being uncommon within a leadership role. Josel and Eric speak about when they started to realize they weren't cut from the same cloth and how this realization manifested in their day to day lives as young people.

Today we have former professional soccer player, Rob Vincent. Rob played for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League and DC United of Major League Soccer before multiple knee surgeries unfortunately ended his career early. Rob currently works as an Academy Coach for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Academy. This episode will focus specifically on transitioning from player to coach and Rob's experience making that transition. We discuss battling through injuries, preparations for retirement and combatting stress while playing. Rob provides some incredible insight in regard to how he goes about growing as a coach and closes the episode with a few bits of applicable advice for both coaches and players.
The purpose of today's episode is to push the conversation in the world in the direction of ending racism. We had an episode ready to go but with respect to recent events we wanted to make it a point to be a part of the solution. Today we have Derrick Etienne Jr, Derrick currently plays for the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer as well as the Haiti National Team. Derrick starts us off with breaking down how he identifies himself, his perspective of the current state of the world and the dangers of silence and complicity with regard to racism. We discuss what Derrick is doing to push the conversation towards ending racism and touch on some advice he would give to young people trying to figure out their role in these trying times. We also touch on how the soccer community handles racism and the changes Derrick would like to see as well as the importance of legacy and how Derrick wants to be remembered. As always, we close with three pieces of advice to 18 year old Derrick.
On today's episode, Becoming Successful and Sustaining Success with Auburn Football Graduate Assistant Joe Moreno, we discuss just that. We ask Joe what makes Joe, Joe. Who he is? Who cultivated him in the direction he's headed and which mentors made the biggest impact in his life. We breakdown what a normal day at Auburn looks like for Joe as well as his "Five Year Plan". How he goes about accomplishing the goals he's set out for himself and what makes Joe different? Joe played Division III College Football at Trinity College and has gone on to coach at Harvard, Stanford and Auburn. Joe is cut from a different cloth, that's why we ask him what makes him different. What is it that has brought him to such success in a short period of time? We also talk about the expectations his co-workers at Auburn have for him, how Auburn Football builds their culture of excellence and how Joe "organizes the chaos" in a rapidly changing environment. As always, we close with three pieces of advice Joe would give to 15 year old Joe.
On Episode XI we are joined by Dundee United Midfielder, Ian Harkes. Dundee was recently promoted this past season from the Scottish Championship (2nd Tier) and into the Scottish Premiership (1st Tier). Ian will be competing with Scottish giants, Celtic FC and Glasgow Rangers next season amongst others. On this week's episode we discuss with Ian how he's grown psychologically as a professional over his first three seasons. We also discuss how his college recruiting process shaped up and give Ian the hypothetical "College or Pro" question that so many young Americans will be faced with. We dive into how Ian goes about improving, the difference between belief and hope as well as how Ian has grown through his periods of doubt throughout his career. We close this week's episode with Ian's best and worst parts of being a pro and three traits Ian sees in himself as a player that he hopes those watching him play can take from his game.
On Episode X we sit down with Monmouth University Men's Soccer Associate Head Coach, Hugh MacDonald. An ex-professional soccer player with the New York Red Bulls and Kearny, New Jersey native, Hugh starts out this week's episode by diving into what inspired him to be a soccer coach and which mentor has played the biggest role in his growth as a person, player and coach through the beautiful game. Hugh discusses some of the inevitable unknowns when recruiting collegiate student-athletes and focuses in on the non-negotiables attributes that every single Monmouth Soccer player has to share.For collegiate prospects, knowing what not to do is arguably more important than knowing what to do when going through the recruiting process. Hugh explains some of the most common red flags he comes across when dealing with potential incoming recruits. Want to know some of the most common reasons Hugh crosses a player off his list? Episode X has the answer for you. Hugh closes this week's episode by dispelling the myth of a "Full Ride" and scratches the surface on how to decide between signing a professional contract at 17-18 years old or heading to college. Hugh caps the episode off with three pieces of advice that all of our listeners can apply to their lives.

On Episode VIII: Perception of Pain with Dr. Charles Ferruzza we dive into what Charles does differently at Mindful Movement Physical Therapy in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Charles discusses the importance of trust between patient and therapist as well as how critical thinking and skepticism from clients may be in their best interests during rehab. Trust and skepticism are followed by pain perception; when an athlete should push through pain and when they shouldn't along with the responsibilities of the therapist throughout that process.
