Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Discover the top books for personal trainers to read like Grit, How to win friends and influence people, How to Become A Successful Personal TRainer and many more.Reading might be the most underrated skill for personal trainers looking to elevate their careers above the 90% who quit within their first year. While most fitness professionals obsess over certification acronyms, the truly successful ones are quietly building their intellectual foundation through consistent, deliberate reading habits. The contrast is striking. Picture a potential client walking into a gym to meet two trainers: one scrolling social media, the other absorbed in a professional development book. Before a word is spoken, one has already established themselves as a dedicated professional. This single habit creates an immediate differentiation that clients intuitively recognize and respect.Starting a reading practice doesn't require massive time commitments. Begin with just 5-10 minutes of distraction-free reading daily, timing yourself to establish a baseline reading speed. Create the right environment by eliminating distractions – put your phone across the room, find a quiet space, and treat reading with the same discipline you bring to physical training. As with fitness, consistency produces remarkable results over time. The reading curriculum for elite trainers spans multiple disciplines. For mindset development, explore works like "Grit" by Angela Duckworth or "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins. Business acumen grows through texts like "Go For No" by Richard Fenton, which teaches the counterintuitive approach of pursuing rejection to calibrate value. Technical mastery comes through studying "Starting Strength," "Fat Loss Forever," and "The Science and Practice of Strength Training." For comprehensive development, aim to read 50+ books annually – a simple habit that places you among the intellectual elite in fitness.Transform your reading habit into Want to ask us a question? “I think any man out there that's living out there that might be younger than the age of 30, I don't think they've really felt the brutality of what it takes to survive in the world, right? And the world is not a nice place, as much as we all like to tell each other.”Mental toughness isn't something you're born with—it's something you build, brick by brutal brick. It's about embracing discomfort, pushing past self-imposed limits, and refusing to be the guy who folds under pressure. The difference between success and failure? Discipline, resilience, and a willingness to go all in when others tap out. Whether it's in business, fitness, or life, the men who win are the ones who don't just endure hardship—they seek it out, because they know that steel is forged in fire.Rob Arpa and Nicky Billou dive into the importance of fortifying the mind through physical challenge, discipline, and the right social circles. They discuss the teachings of elite athletes like David Goggins, the necessity of surrounding yourself with high-achievers, and why most men settle for mediocrity when they should be striving for dominance. Their message is clear: if you're not actively strengthening your body and mind, you're getting weaker.Rob Arpa is a seasoned entrepreneur. With a background in business and a relentless drive for self-improvement, he's built a seven-figure company while continually pushing his own limits. “There is no success without hardship.” ~ SophoclesToday's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF): What's the one ‘habit/skill/trait' holding me back from living the life I desire?”The Price of AdmissionSteve Jobs often said that starting and running a business is “painful and difficult.”Elon Musk? Same tune, different key. These guys didn't just waltz onto the stage of success—they slogged through the swamp of pain, discomfort, frustration, and failure. Why?Because success is never a gift; it's the result of grit—a prize you wrestle from life as it growls at you. Here's a PAINFUL truth (again): nobody is born disciplined. Not you, not me, not even that annoying friend who crushes marathons before breakfast.Discipline is just a dressed-up way of saying, “I've become really good at tolerating pain without b******g too much.”The best part? Discipline—tolerable pain—is a learnable skill, trait, and habit, no matter how much you currently enjoy hitting the snooze button.Make Pain Your FrenemyPain doesn't have to be your eternal arch-nemesis.The Master Key: Begin with Pain Lite™Nobody's asking you to climb Everest in flip-flops. Heck, even David Goggins—yes, that David Goggins—was reportedly, in his own words, a “fat, lazy slob” before he turned his life around. Need proof? Look no further than the title of his bestselling book: “Can't Hurt Me.”Here's the thing: Goggins didn't wake up one day as the poster child for superhuman discipline. He developed it—one habit at a time, by embracing discomfort and leaning into pain.P.A.R.R. Your Way to GloryNo, this isn't a catchy new pirate slogan—it's a simple, proven process to help you build the habit of discipline. Consider it your battle plan:Plan: Outline your goal or habit. What are you aiming for?Act: Take small, consistent steps forward. Start messy if you have to—just start.Record: Track your progress, even if it feels tedious. Writing it down creates accountability.Reassess: Reflect on what's working and tweak as needed. Growth is a constant experiment.P.A.R.R. Leverages Your Executive Brain—You Are Not a RodentUnlike rodents, you're not stuck in a loop of pain-and-pleasure-based survival. You're human, which means you have access to three incredible superpowers:Choice: You decide what's important and where to focus your energy.Intention/Planning: You can anticipate challenges and create strategies to overcome them.Reflection: You're able to look back, evaluate, and adjust your approach for better results.Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. By following The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. methodolgy, you can tap into your higher brain functions and break free from the automatic “pain-pleasure” cycle that drives most behavior. So no—you don't have to climb mountains barefoot or live like a Navy SEAL to embrace discipline. Start small, embrace some discomfort. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit habits2goals.substack.com/subscribe

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I share an idea that's inspired by one of the “ass kickers” on my Spiritual Team, David Goggins!I discuss the concept of "one second decisions" and how the quick choices we make - can have long-lasting impact!I also explore the common struggles and temptations we face when we're working on new habits, big projects, or pursuing our dreams. And how easy it can be when we start to feel uncomfortable, to make a decision to quit. But that's when we have to remember why we started the project, the training, the relationship, or that goal in the first place!I also talk about how using tools like meditation, breathwork, and mantras can help us to support our nervous system and avoid self-sabotage.Finally, I encourage us all to make positive one-second decisions that align with our values and lead us in the direction of personal growth and transformation!KEY POINTS:• Embrace one-second decisions• Remember your "why"• Avoid self-sabotage• Utilize helpful tools• Build lasting habits• Choose growth mindset• The Nest - Group Mentoring ProgramRecommended Resources:• David Goggins' books "Can't Hurt Me" and "Never Finished."• Karen Kenney's newsletter and spiritual mentoring group "The Nest"BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist.
