Episode 72: Andrew Dovey. Another fellow Burlington raised hockey player joined the prohockeypod this week. Andrew Dovey didn't have the usual Canadian hockey path. He didn't play AAA hockey until his OHL draft year and ended up playing Tier 2 junior until he was 21. We talked about some memories of junior, including going all the way to the Sunderland Cup Finals in his last season. Andrew would go on to D3 Adrian College, where funny enough, we would play against each other 2 times in the playoffs (1-1). Dovey would play 1 year of pro in the SPHL after college before transitioning to coaching. He would go to Canisius College as a Graduate Assistant for 2 seasons which lead to him where he is today at University of Toronto in USports. Andrew talked about all he has learned along his journey and how he tries to share his experiences with his athletes at UofT. We also mentioned early how it is awesome to see how many people from Burlington who went on to have long playing careers or have gotten into coaching. A testament to the city of Burlington and how many players have developed in the Eagles system. Hope you enjoy!

Erin Dunston is the Assistant Athletic Director of Football Recruiting & Events at Ohio State University. Prior to that, she was the Director of On Campus Recruiting at Ohio State (2021-Feb. 2024), the Director of On Campus Recruiting at the University of Kansas (2019-2021), the Athletics Administration Associate at Purdue University (2018-2019), and a Graduate Assistant in Football Operations at Louisiana State University (2016-2017). She talks about growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland, attending the University of Delaware for undergrad, how she got started working in football while at grad school at LSU, and what it was like working for Head Coaches Les Miles and Ed Orgeron in the SEC. Then, Erin discusses her position at Purdue where she worked mainly with the football and men's basketball programs on many different projects, how the opportunity at Kansas came to be, getting to work with Les Miles again, what the position of Director of On Campus Recruiting entails (it's a lot!), and recruiting through the pandemic. She describes how the opportunity at Ohio State came up, what it's like to work in the Big Ten at one of the very best college football programs in the nation, working with Head Coach Ryan Day, all the work that goes into recruiting at the national level, what is it like to be a woman in a male dominated field, helping other women get into the field, and the relationship she has with the players. Erin also chats about the Ohio State - Michigan rivalry in the Dunston household as her younger sister Jillian played on the Michigan Women's Basketball team and now is an Assistant Coach for the program.
Growing up in Hawaii, his dream was to play football at Notre Dame like his dad. That dream was crushed when the Irish sent him a rejection letter. Brian Cabral then turned to a school where he would spend decades of his life. He was a stellar linebacker and team captain for the University of Colorado. Nearly 50 years after he played, Brian's name is still on the top 20 list of the Buffs all-time tacklers. A list that also includes 10 names he would eventually coach. After graduating from CU, Brian was a 4th round draft pick. During his first few seasons, he dealt with injury, a trade and being cut. After he was released from the Packers, he thought he was done, but a higher power did not. On his drive to Boulder from Wisconsin, Brian prayed and left his future in God's hands. When he pulled into his driveway, his wife Becky ran out to tell him the Bears had been calling. After six seasons in Chicago, and a Super Bowl championship, Brian retired and went into coaching. Bill McCartney brought him to CU on as a Graduate Assistant and he quickly became a linebacker's coach. Coach Cabral's ability to connect with players was undeniable: he remained on the Buffs coaching staff through FIVE head coaches. He was also an interim head coach twice and felt he was ready to lead his alma mater. When that opportunity went elsewhere, Coach Cabral left Boulder for a few years. A few years after he returned, the CU Athletic Department reached out and created a position for him as a Character Coach. Today he works with all CU student athletes and loves being back with the Black and Gold.

On this episode of the Hockey Think Tank podcast, Topher is flying solo! Back in 2011, Toph was on staff at Miami of Ohio as a Graduate Assistant and wrote his Masters Thesis on the Key and Common Elements of Successful College and Professional Programs and Coaches. Without a ton out (at that time) from a hockey-specific perspective, Toph turned to some of the all-time great coaches and programs: John Wooden, Coach K, Vince Lombardi, Phil Jackson, Tony Dungy, Lou Holtz, Pat Riley, Bill Walsh, Jim Tressel, and more! In this episode Toph hits on: — Big emphasis on people and personal relationships — Always had a look at the bigger picture (forward thinkers) — Different characteristics that these coaches possessed that set them apart — Habits (as individuals and what they preaches to their teams) AND SO MUCH MORE!
