Samford women's basketball head coach Matt Wise reflecting on his first year as head coach and the team's remarkable turnaround season. Wise discussed the challenges of starting with a difficult non-conference schedule that included five Power 5 opponents, leading to an early 1-6 conference start. He explained how the team's confidence and belief improved throughout the season, culminating in winning the Southern Conference Tournament Championship as the sixth seed and earning an NCAA tournament berth. The Bulldogs overcame a double-digit deficit in the championship game to advance to the NCAA First Four, finishing the season with an overall record of 16-19.Wise shared insights about roster retention, strategic adjustments including shifting to a tougher defensive lineup, and the importance of maintaining team culture during the tournament run. He emphasized the value of staff alignment and staying true to coaching principles, while noting that the current landscape of college basketball requires constant creation and adaptation due to high roster turnover.Wise has extensive previous coaching experience, including serving as a Graduate Assistant for the University of Florida's men's basketball program, two stints as an Assistant Coach at the University of Wyoming (where he was part of the 2015 Mountain West Tournament title and NCAA berth), an Assistant Coach at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, and an Assistant Coach at East Tennessee State University. He also worked as Director of Video & Creative Content for the University of Alabama's women's basketball team during the 2021-22 season, before serving as Assistant and later Associate Head Coach for Samford University's women's basketball program from 2022 to 2025.

Harlee Heath found strength and conditioning the way a lot of great coaches do. Not from a plan, but from a moment. A female strength coach walked into her exercise science class at the University of Central Arkansas, described the job, and that was it. Harlee walked up after class and said she wanted to intern. Two years later she was leading women's tennis on her own and traveling with the football team. Now finishing her second year as a Graduate Assistant at Western Kentucky University, Harlee has coached cheer, dance, men's basketball, and baseball. She went from eight tennis athletes to over 120 cheer and dance athletes in her first week as a GA, coaching on the floor by herself from day one because her mentor D-Hall believed the only way to grow is to do the work. That philosophy runs through every part of this conversation. This episode covers what the GA grind really looks like, how to earn trust before you have a title, what it means to be a female in a field that is still overwhelmingly male, and why networking is the most underutilized skill in early-career strength coaching.Key Takeaways• Passion and work ethic separate good interns from great ones. Being first in, last out, and doing things without being asked is what gets coaches noticed.• Dedicated attention to one team builds deeper buy-in. Athletes notice when someone shows up just for them rather than splitting time across multiple sports.• Coaching diverse populations forces you to expand your coaching vocabulary. When verbal cues alone do not work, you become a sharper communicator.• Networking is active work. Following up, visiting other programs, and staying in touch matters more than any resume or application.• Great mentors let you fail. The mistakes you make yourself are the ones you never forget. Being corrected before the mistake happens does not stick the same way.• Female strength coaches bring a unique connection to female athletes. Trust and buy-in can come faster when the relationship is peer to peer.Featured Quote"I told them I am going to train you like real athletes. If that means we are going to Olympic lift, squat heavy, deadlift heavy, bench heavy, that is what we are going to do. As soon as I said that, the buy-in was nearly immediate."— Harlee Heath, Graduate Assistant Strength Coach, Western Kentucky University

Quinn Flaspohler takes us on his journey from Oxford, Ohio to Cleveland as he navigates the transition from student-athlete to young professional.Growing up in a family of academics – with his father teaching psychology at Miami University and grandfather teaching statistics at Xavier – Quinn carved his own path playing soccer at DePauw University before pursuing a Master of Finance at Case Western Reserve University. The NAU program is in the best of hands, and we're excited for you to hear this discussion with one of the up-and-coming coaching stars in the NCAA. In this conversation, I tackle Coach Cornfield's brain on many different coaching subject matters, and then we dive into his news, how this role came about, the lessons he's learned from Coach Smith, his ambitions and vision for the program, and so much more. Erin Dunston is the Assistant Athletic Director of Football Recruiting & Events at Ohio State University. Prior to that, she was the Director of On Campus Recruiting at Ohio State (2021-Feb. 2024), the Director of On Campus Recruiting at the University of Kansas (2019-2021), the Athletics Administration Associate at Purdue University (2018-2019), and a Graduate Assistant in Football Operations at Louisiana State University (2016-2017). She talks about growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland, attending the University of Delaware for undergrad,  how she got started working in football while at grad school at LSU, and what it was like working for Head Coaches Les Miles and Ed Orgeron in the SEC. Then, Erin discusses her position at Purdue where she worked mainly with the football and men's basketball programs on many different projects, how the opportunity at Kansas came to be, getting to work with Les Miles again, what the position of Director of On Campus Recruiting entails (it's a lot!), and recruiting through the pandemic. She describes how the opportunity at Ohio State came up, what it's like to work in the Big Ten at one of the very best college football programs in the nation, working with Head Coach Ryan Day, all the work that goes into recruiting at the national level, what is it like to be a woman in a male dominated field, helping other women get into the field, and the relationship she has with the players. Erin also chats about the Ohio State - Michigan rivalry in the Dunston household as her younger sister Jillian played on the Michigan Women's Basketball team and now is an Assistant Coach for the program.
