The Cedar Grove apartments in Beaverton were created by Community Partners for Affordable Housing, or CPAH. The nonprofit has been working to create homes that Oregonians can actually afford to live in for 30 years now. This is part of a series of conversations we’re having this year about some of the biggest problems Oregon is facing, along with possible solutions. More than half of renters in Oregon don’t have enough money after they pay rent to be able to afford basics like food, child care or transportation. Meanwhile, Oregon is among the states with the lowest supply of rentals that are affordable to people who are at or below poverty levels. As a state economist put it, “We have the worst affordability” in the nation. We were joined by CPAH staff: Executive Director Rachael Duke; Housing Director Jilian Saurage Felton; and Resident Services Coordinator Renee Sheets Johnson. We also heard from neighbors and residents of Cedar Grove and other residents of CPAH properties, including Talaur Alvarado, Patrick Kirlin, Virginia Bruce, Paula Morrison, Mary Barbee and Jeffrey Worthington.

What does Wassail & Drink Hail mean? In this episode learn about meaning behind Wassail and Drink Hail from the Butler himself, Al Sax. A Wassail is a celebration of the orchards, most typically apple orchards to honor the natural world and pay tribute with hopes of an abundant fruiting season moving forward. A Wassail is also a cheer When you hear someone say “Wassail” it means -Be Healthy! The reply is “Drink hail” –  To your health! Al as the Butler at the Wassail When time of year to Wassail? Historically a Wassail would be held on the 6th of January or what is known as the Twelfth Night.  Or on the 17th of January which is called “Old Twelvey” Procession to the main Wassail fire In these modern times a Wassail can take place when it is most appropriate considering the weather and outside temperatures. There is no strict protocols, but rather traditions that when followed harken us all back to our ancestral roots and pagan ways. Where do Wassails take place? In the orchard surrounding a large fire, a fire circle and in some places 12 small rings of fire for the 12 apostles or for the twelve signs of the Zodiac. Indoor Wassails are also doable for those who can't go outside during -6 degree temperatures. Thus, a Wassail can take place at a Senior Center or a Day Care with songs being sung around a plant or small tree. How to Make a Torch for Wassailing The end goal is all the same, to sing to the orchard, the apple tree(s), to ward off the apple foes and to harken in better times ahead. The Old Apple Tree of the Wassail How to Plan for your own Wassail Have a fire keeper who will make sure the wood is ready and lit to greet the parade of merry makers Set a meeting spot for everyone to gather and then walk to the oldest or largest apple tree. The fire is often very nearby. Have “Safe” Torches, flashlights to lead the crowd to the main fire Have some hot mulled cider, which is always good for a loud “Wassail and Drink Hail” reply Have a Master of the Ceremony or what is known as the “Butler” Select a King and Queen Have slices of Toasted bread Have Cider to drink and to pour a bit on the toast and onto the ground Hand out lyrics to the Wassail songs The King and Queen lead the group up to the Apple Tree Place the toast on the limbs Pour cider on the roots of the tree Make noise to ward off the evil spirts – this is your chance to call out “Wassail” and then reply “Drink Hail”! If Morris Dancers are available they would do a dance or two Have a taste of two of Wassail – pick an option that best suits your crowd. It can be a hot mulled cider, with or without spices or fortified with brandy, perhaps a wee bit of honey? A two handled cup or goblet is the classic Wassail cup that would be passed round, but these days any fine drinking cup would do sans the passing around. Wassail and Drink Hail around the world Willie Smiths Cider in Tasmania hosts an annual “Mid Winter Festival” in July Campaign for the Revival Of Wassailing (CROW) www.nationaltrust.org.uk/petworth-house-and-park/recipes/petworths-traditional-wassail Mentions in this Cider Chat 072: Lost Apple of the Quabbin |Massachusetts January 5, 2024 Wassail at Botanist and Barrel Cidery and Winery, 115 Persimmon Hill Ln, Cedar Grove, NC 27231-8807, United States Hear about the orchard samplers and cider made at Renaissance Orchards in Ferndale Washington in Episode 390

Caitlyn Soroka, a junior who also plays for the Broncos' girls soccer team, was the hero with a 30-yard field goal in the final 23 seconds. She set up the game-winner with a successful onside kick. Quarterback Matt Peavy led the comeback with three second-half touchdown passes. Despite the adversity, Brookwood's players never lost belief and fought back to secure the dramatic victory. This win followed a similar comeback earlier in the season when they overcame a 20-7 deficit to win 21-20.   Story 7: Mill Creek wins another high-scoring clash with Cedar Grove   The Mill Creek Hawks won their fourth consecutive game of the 2023 football season by defeating Cedar Grove 56-35 in a high-scoring matchup. Mill Creek's senior running back, Cam Robinson, played a crucial role with over 200 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Despite a furious third-quarter rally from Cedar Grove, Mill Creek held on for the victory. The Hawks' strong start, led by quarterback Shane Throgmartin and Robinson, gave them an early lead. While Cedar Grove fought back in the third quarter, Mill Creek secured the win. They improved to 4-0 in non-region play and will face county rival Parkview in their next game.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60 Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. The Cedar Grove apartments in Beaverton were created by Community Partners Affordable Housing, or CPAH. The nonprofit has been working to create homes that Oregonians can actually afford to live in for 30 years now. This is part of a series of conversations we’re having this year about some of the biggest problems Oregon is facing, along with possible solutions.More than half of renters in Oregon don’t have enough money after they pay rent to be able to afford basics like food, child care or transportation.

The last few weeks I've enjoyed checking in with some of my guests from WAY BACK - like, 2020-2021 - to find out what they're up to now, and I've been reveling in all the growth and expansion (and sometimes pivoting!) that's occurred since our initial conversations. Today is no exception - I'm checking back in with Jackie Stratton, a registered Maine guide who featured prominently in the early days of the podcast. Jackie first shared her guiding origin story in January 2021, and she was one of the awesome panelists for our "Maine Guide Q&A"  in May of 2021.But fast forward 2+ years. While Jackie's interest in the outdoors hasn't waned, her business interests have completely refocused as a result of the overwhelming success of what started out as a side hustle, to keep some cash coming in during the off season.Cedar Grove Sauna is now actually THREE saunas: two anchored in beautiful spots on Jackie and her partner Nate's sprawling homestead property in Montville, Maine; and a third that's a modified horse trailer, that Jackie tows around mid-coast Maine and plants for days at a time in spectacular waterfront spots.Jackie and I talk about the explosion of her sauna business, how it's impacted her guiding, and why she spent six weeks in Europe this summer in various states of undress. How's that for a teaser?!? Today on the virtual sauna bench, we Sauna Talk with Jackie from Cedar Grove Saunas in Northern Maine. Jackie is just back from her sif week sauna pilgrimage to four countries in Northern Europe. Jackie has built her own saunas, and is four years into hosting guests traveling far and wide to Cedar Grove Saunas. We are kindred spirits of good heat. We share an interest and passion towards the Latvian Pirtus tradition, spearheaded by Biruté and Rimus from the Lithuanian Bath Academy. Are you interested in bringing plants and herbs into your sauna practice? Jackie helps us better understand this tradition. Sauna in Nature is bigger than all of us. And thanks to Jackie, we get to hear her voice and values of how she is bringing this spirit forward. After hearing about mobile saunas Jackie got the idea to start a business and build another sauna to bring to others. She set off in 2019 to convert a horse trailer into a sauna but it wasn't easy or quick. Jackie's high standard of quality, initial lack of carpentry skills, and the trailer's unique challenges (such as all the rounded corners) conspired to extend the build beyond the limits of her patience. Suddenly she wondered whether other people would pay to use her backyard sauna. However, a spa was born. BONUS: We begin this podcast with a few brief words from my sauna bench, last night. Friends and neighbors from age 8 to 84 share a couple thoughts to warm your sauna spirit.

Sheboygan Park Project founders Ryan and Angie Shaw, whose story involving their conjoined twins became well-known, wanted to provide a space for their children and others to not have to watch from the sidelines as other children played. They spearheaded the fundraising and efforts to see the project through, realizing this inspiring vision to create a place for all kids. The park had its grand opening on August 27th, 2022 and is located within Evergreen Park on Pine Grove Avenue in Sheboygan; all are welcome.Family Business Legacies and Visions. We focus on two great businesses in Sheboygan: 3 Sheeps Brewing, which started relatively recently, and Miesfeld's, a longtime family business tradition.3 Sheeps Brewing: Starting at home by trial and error, Grant Pauly decided to take the next step in developing his business in 2012. What started for him as a hobby has now one of the most recognized local craft breweries in Wisconsin. As the company outgrew its original location, it moved into a former Coca-Cola facility that provided room for its expansion. Taking a chance and having a vision for success is key to any business plan, and Grant Pauly's story is in an inspiring one as 3 Sheeps continues to grow. Their brewery and tap room on North Avenue hosts live music and events as well as room to enjoy food, beverages, and games in a facility that welcomes the whole family. Miesfeld's is a widely loved, family-run business in Sheboygan County since 1941. Now home to the largest meat counters in the Midwest, Miesfeld's is a prime example of the power of Wisconsin's meat and sausage industry – and Sheboygan County's in particular. One thing that separates Miesfelds from most is their commitment to community. Every week at the Brat Hut outside the store, there is a brat fry that local organizations sign-up for to raise money. Miesfelds has also played a large part in fundraising for different causes, including the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. We also talked with Karin Kirchmeier, the Executive Director of the Partners for Community Development in Sheboygan County. We discussed her love of the county and how the welcoming atmosphere made her arrival in the county two years ago an easy one for her and her family. We also covered many of the county's unique features and amenities and discussed some of their initiatives, which extend even beyond the county. Michelle then offers a preview of what we can watch on Uniquely Wisconsin's Sheboygan County episode online, including stories about the renowned Sheboygan Symphony, where we visit with a local music teacher who shares his talents and also the new conductor, who shares why he fell in love with Sheboygan County and his motivation to perform. The Sheboygan Youth Sailing Team, which introduces youths and adults to sailing while helping them develop the skills and safety to crow and skipper a sailboat. This program allows Sheboygan County residents to take advantage of the opportunities the vast shorelines of Lake Michigan provides. And finally, the Green Bicycle Company, Heather Cleveland founded in 2000 with the mission of helping people create and achieve their goals. Through community projects and consulting, Heather's dedication to her county and the communities within is an inspiration for others.

Former Pope wrestling coach Jim Haskin did everything possible to help promote wrestling in Georgia during his 30-year coaching career, and now he is going to get the ultimate recognition for what he did for the sport. Haskin is one of seven individuals who will make up the 2023 class of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Georgia Chapter. He joins current Reinhardt university coach Jeff Bedard; wrestling official Mike Bostick; Bill Gifford, who started the first wrestling-specific Fellowship of Christian Athletes ministry; former Rockdale and Hall County coach Mitch McGhee; former Roswell coach Wayne Smith; and former state champion and wrestling official Johnny Stallings. All seven will enter the hall as “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” recipients, which recognizes those who contributed at least 20 years to the sport as a coach, refereeor contributor. They will be inducted as part of a ceremony April 23 in Flowery Branch. Haskin, who retired from coaching following the 2021-22 season, started his career with one season as an assistant at Cedar Grove and then served two years as head coach at Druid Hills. However, in 1995, Haskin began building Pope into the consistent winner and state power it became under his guidance. During that time, he compiled a 570-148 dual record, winning seven state titles — three traditional and four duals championships — and an additional four state runner-up finishes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brian DeJong explores the history of Presbyterianism in Wisconsin by focusing on several key figures in the development Presbyterian churches in the area. In 1821, the Stockbridge Mohican Indians relocated to the Fox River area, just north of Appleton. These Indians had been under the Christian ministries of David Brainer, Jonathan Edwards, and John Sergeant in Massachusetts. They eventually moved to the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago. The Rev. Jesse Miner came to minister among them in 1825. Later, Mr. Cutting Marsh served among them as well. Rev. DeJong also describes the ministries of Rev. Moses Ordway and Stephen Peet in Green Bay and beyond and Pieter Zonne in what is known today as Cedar Grove. Overall, we gain a sense of the pioneering mindset and strong commitment to missions and church planting among these early Wisconsin Presbyterians.  Powder Springs man found guilty in a 2018 armed robbery in Cobb was sentenced to at least 12 years in prison on Tuesday. Romero Lindley received a 20-year sentence with 12 to be served in custody. Lindley was found guilty of two counts of armed robbery and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony on Dec. 9 of last year. Lindley's charges stemmed from a home invasion incident on June 5, 2018, when Cobb police were dispatched to an armed robbery in progress at an apartment located in Marietta. A neighbor said at the time that four armed men entered the apartment. During an investigation into the incident, three victims and the neighbor told the officers that two of the men drove away prior to police arrival, while the other two fled through the woods toward a church parking lot, prosecutors said. Officers found Lindley hiding in bushes near the apartment following a K-9 tracking. He was found with a black ski mask and black sweatpants, which contained one of the victim's necklaces, per prosecutors. The ski mask, found within arm's reach of Lindley, was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for DNA matching, and found to contain Lindley's saliva. In Lindley's arrest warrant from 2018, he was accused of taking a laptop, a Louis Vuitton travel bag and approximately $300 from the residence. Prosecutors said one victim testified at trial and stated that Lindley “put a gun to [his] forehead and took the necklace right off [his] neck.” Lindley was arrested again last May, accused in an arrest warrant of jumping bail by fleeing to South Carolina after he failed to appear in Cobb Superior Court on the armed robbery charges. In 2019, Lindley's co-defendant Marcellis Richardson pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident. Another co-defendant, Donquail Williams, pleaded guilty to charges in 2021. Democrats Nichelle Davis and Becky Sayler were sworn in as the two newest members of the Cobb County Board of Education on Thursday. Sayler, who previously taught English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in Cobb and now teaches preschool, represents Post 2. She replaces Democrat Dr. Jaha Howard, who did not seek reelection after a single term in order to run for state school superintendent, a race he lost. Sayler won 68.6% of the vote in the November general election to Republican Stephen George, Jr.'s 31.4%. Davis, meanwhile, was a Teach for America teacher before becoming a staffer at the education nonprofit Achieve Atlanta, and represents Post 6. She replaces Democrat Charisse Davis, who decided against running for reelection after serving one term. Sayler was sworn in by Cobb State Court Judge Ashley Palmer, while Davis was sworn in by Cobb Superior Court Judge Kellie Hill. Sayler told the MDJ two of her priorities on the board will be expanding pre-K and revising a policy passed in July that paved the way for armed, non-police security personnel at schools, which was billed as a way to improve safety in case of a mass shooting. Sayler added that, as a former ESOL teacher, she is passionate about the district's dual-language immersion program, which enables students to develop literacy skills in English and a foreign language at the same time. Davis said she will prioritize “building relationships” as she begins her term on the board. At their first meeting, Sayler and Davis got a taste of the partisan divide on the board, with party-line votes leading to the election of the new board chair, Republican Brad Wheeler, and vice chair, Republican David Banks. A vote on the board meeting calendar also passed 4-3, with the Republican members in favor and Democrats opposed. The discussion for instant replay at the high school state championship football games will begin in earnest Monday. It is one of the items that will be talked about at the Georgia High School Association Board of Trustees' meeting in Thomaston. During a news conference last month to announce that the GHSA's football state championships would be moved to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, executive director Robin Hines said the issue of replay would be looked into. The topic came into the forefront following the Class AAA title game between Sandy Creek and Cedar Grove. A touchdown was allowed to stand despite the Georgia Public Broadcasting television replay showing that the Sandy Creek ball-carrier appeared to be tackled at the 1-yard line. Sandy Creek went on to win the game 21-17. With playing the title games in an NFL stadium, it gives the GHSA an opportunity to potentially utilize its system to make sure calls are correctly made in the biggest games of the year. Hines also said he hopes he would be able to use the games in August's season-opening Corky Kell Classic — also at Mercedes-Benz Stadium — as a trial for the state championships. Another item that will be discussed by the GHSA Board of Trustees is a motion brought forth by the Fulton County School System to do away with the minimum seating requirements for schools to host state semifinal football playoff games. This year, three state semifinal games involving Fulton County schools had to be moved to neutral sites because the host schools' stadium capacities did not meet the GHSA's minimum standard of 6,000. Milton, whose stadium seats 3,000, was set to host Mill Creek in one Class AAAAAAA semifinal. After numerous discussions of options, which included the possibility of Mill Creek agreeing to waive the seating requirement or moving the band seating into the end zone to open up additional seating space, the game was played at Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta, with a 5 p.m. scheduled start. It became the first game of a semifinal doubleheader, which was followed by Hughes, another Fulton County school that could not fulfill the GHSA seating requirement, facing Rome at 8 p.m. The other Class AAAAAAA semifinal between Roswell and Gainesville was moved to McEachern's Walter Cantrell Stadium. Ethan Bourdon became the first child to ride Kennesaw's brand-new swing at Swift-Cantrell Park, one that allows kids with disabilities to get in on the fun. Bourdon's mother, Shawna Grimes, told the MDJ this is “huge” for Bourdon, who is wheelchair-bound with a rare genetic disorder, MeCP2 Duplication Syndrome. Mayor Derek Easterling said the swing's ribbon-cutting was the culmination of a five-year effort by the city to transform the park, located on Old Highway 41 across from Kennesaw Elementary School, into one that is inclusive of all children. According to the city, the park is home to one of the largest inclusive playgrounds in the country. It includes 40 feet of shade, wheelchair accessible ramps that lead to a ropes tower, sensory stations, an eight-person, wheelchair-accessible, swaying structure, a slide and the new swing. About $450,000 from the city's 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax projects was put toward upgrading the 18,500-square-foot park with features that would make it accessible for all under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Easterling said Kennesaw Councilman Pat Ferris had first lobbied for the inclusive swing after the idea for making the park inclusive of those with disabilities came up about five years ago. The swing, which was the final touch on the park's upgrades, came together thanks to Ferris and Kennesaw resident Ann Pratt, who is active in the North Cobb Civitan and was recognized by the city in June 2022 for her leadership. The swing was made possible by a grant from T-Mobile, created to fund improvement projects for small towns across the U.S. Kennesaw received a grant of roughly $47,000 to implement the swing. Former Hillgrove point guard Jeremiah Wilkinson committed this week to play his college basketball at Mississippi State. Wilkinson, a 6-foot, 175-pound junior from Powder Springs who now plays at The Skill Factory, a basketball developmental organization in Atlanta, posted his decision on social media Wednesday. Wilkinson was the first commitment to Mississippi State from the class of 2024. The three-star recruit selected the Bulldogs over a number of other Division I programs, including Georgia State, Florida, Mississippi, Butler, Murry State, Rice and Saint Louis, among others. He was also garnering interest from interest from Marquette, Loyola-Chicago and Providence. Wilkinson is averaging 14.3 points, 3.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds a game this season against similar basketball prep programs. Last year, he helped lead Hillgrove to a 23-4 record, averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game to go with 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Jordan Ridley is ready to hit the ground running as one of newest members to represent Cobb and Cherokee counties in the Georgia House. Ridley is “super great guy,” according to Cobb GOP Chair Salleigh Grubbs. Ridley, 30, was elected to represent House District 22 in November with 14,685 votes, or 61.5%, to Democrat Stacee Hill's 9,190 votes, or 38.5%. Ridley won 52.4% of the vote in Cobb. Ridley replaces Wes Cantrell, a Republican from Woodstock, who decided not to seek reelection after eight years under the Gold Dome. Before the 2020 redistricting cycle, House District 22 included eastern Cherokee County and a slice of southwest Forsyth County. Under the redrawn legislative map, Ridley will represent southwest Cherokee County and a sliver of north Cobb. A Cherokee County native, Ridley went to Etowah High School before attending Georgia State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in public policy. Previously, Ridley served as the chair of the Cherokee County Republican Party from 2021 to 2022. Before that, he was a legislative aide for state Representative Charlice Byrd, a Republican from Woodstock, who represents House District 20. Ridley said he looks forward to leveraging the connections he established while working for Byrd in the General Assembly. Ridley worked on a wide range of issues as Byrd's aide, and he said appropriations is his biggest interest entering the 2022 session. That said, Ridley is looking to take advantage of other work experience in his new role. On his preference sheet for committee assignments, he listed the Game, Fish, and Parks Committee — Ridley was a park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and worked for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com              See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We talk through getting the bee hives ready for winter. Kamal admits he wasn't a fan of bees before. Starting hives was actually a suggestion of one of the youth in the farm's agricultural leadership program.
