Coach Chris Newport talks with Dr Mike Young, owner of The Athletic Lab and arguably one of the most educated gym owner's on the East coast (and possibly beyond!). He works with several professional teams, high level distance runners, and the general fitness population.  As a gym owner in the local area for over 12 years, we talk about the impact of COVID-19 on the fitness and gym industry and how they've been able to fare.Mike talks about the benefits of strength training, which, for athletes is for injury prevention and performance enhancement. Since runners tend to be one of the most injury-prone athletic populations, it's especially important for them. Plus, Mike talks about the direct relationship of neuromuscular strength training and improvement in running economy by 5% and running performance by 3%. However, this is not "standard" strength training, where you may want to increase muscle mass or improve your 1RM (rep max). Instead, the "details" for appropriate adaptation are important. Mike gives specifics on how to do this type of strength training, like focusing on quality rather than quantity. He explains why:-->it's shockingly small how little you need to be doing this type of work (and actually how much time that is)-->this should be intense, but not "vomit-inducing"-->you should train with intent and be sure to minimize metabolic fatigue (aka getting overly breathless)-->you should focus on high load (aka "weighted") or high speed, but not both at the same time-->you should be doing multi-joint exercises, with specific exercise recommendations-->why running with ankle weights, doing arm swings with weights, or a "mind-numbing" number of crunches are NOT helping-->tension and motor recruitment are crucialMike gives some examples of what these short workouts should look like and how they should be programmed throughout the week. He also gives examples of bodyweight movements that you can do at home and how to scale them. He also suggests some simple equipment you can have at home that will help for added weight, like kettlebells or wall balls. If you're local, visit Athletic Lab in Morrisville, where Coach Chris did her "can-an-endurance-athlete-improve-with-strength-training" experiment a few years ago. Did it work? Yes! She improved her "Fran" time by 45%, increased her pull up max by 167% and cut her triathlon time by 4%.Check out Mike's online programs for purchase, as well as their newly launched Coaching Academy here for anyone interested in sport science.Want to work with us? This week’s guest is Dr. Mike Young.  Mike is the owner of Athletic Lab in Cary, NC.  Mike is also the founder of the website www.elitetrack.com, which for young coaches like me was an extremely valuable resource in learning more about the sport, as well as various training program.  In 2010, I coached a national champion in the 55m dash using workouts I derived largely from Josh Hurlebaus’ training log on the Elitetrack forums. Mike has been a contributor to Just Fly Sports in the past, and one of the things that Mike has that is in rare demand is experience in biomechanics, track and field, team sport, strength and conditioning, and technology use.  This combination makes him a great expert on all things speed and force application. Today, we are going to cover lots of biomechanical topics on speed development, comparing and contrasting track to team sport.  We also get into some special strength topics, such as the role of bar speed measurement in the weightroom, as well as Mike’s use of the kBox in developing specific strength for jumpers and sprinters.  If you coach speed, and are interested in the fine points of cueing and exercise selection, then you’ll find this episode particularly fascinating. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Ideals on coaching acceleration in team sport vs. track and field Internal vs. external cueing in speed and acceleration building Cueing posterior pelvic tilt and speed Coaching (or not coaching) frontside mechanics in sprinting Technology used in speed and agility training Bar speed as a KPI metric (or not) Mike’s thoughts on the kBox Quotes: “The basics of acceleration mechanics are the same (between track and team sports), the physics don’t lie, we accelerate the same whether we’re on a soccer pitch or basketball court.  The only difference is if whether we’re in these really low starting positions and have spikes on that might change our starting angles, and whether we have to deal with various starting positions, so side facing, coming off a backpedal, coming off a small jog, that kind of thing” “In most sports, you’re never going to be in those crouched positions, the 3 point or 4 point start” “(In team sport) we’re accelerating to a visual/auditory/personnel stimulus on the field or court.  That’s totally different than what we might see in track.  Everything in track is a very discrete task, we know exactly what is going to happen…. That’s not the case with field and team sports, I try to introduce that element, making the start a little unpredictable, with various starting positions responding to a clap, or a ball, or other players positioning” “Most of the time, I’m going to be using external cueing for both track and team sports” “The only time you might want to use internal over external cueing is if you want to get a very specific muscle activation” “The orientation of the lumbo-pelvic hip complex has a profound effect on what the leg is able to do with respect to the ground” “With volitional posterior pelvic tilt (as compared to normal) we saw that at the same running velocities on the treadmill, the stride lengths were 2” longer… I’ve since seen very similar things counting steps in a fly zone manipulating pelvic tilt” “Sprinting is such a fast movement, the more we can make it a hind-brain activity, the better the athlete is going to be” “I have found a fairly clear relationship between postural alignment and sprint speed and if you don’t have postural alignment correct, particularly the pelvis, you're not going to sprint correctly, doesn’t matter how much you cue the limbs, if the lumbo-pelvic complex is not oriented correctly, it’s not going to work” “When we ask an athlete in a team field court sport to basically make a play that decides a game, overwhelmingly,

Download the OSF Food Journal Now! Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review "If you're not competing; you're not competing. Which means that if you're not looking for an opportunity to win, then sometimes you'll never give yourself a good chance to actually win."- Dr. Mike Young This week, I had a great discussion with  Director of Performance and Research for Athletic Lab, Dr. Mike Young, about competition success and how creating competition for yourself can help you to become more successful. Once you listen to the podcast, you'll have a clear idea that Mike really understands himself and why he's so competitive. This week, my challenge to you is for you to better understand how you approach food and your nutrition.  Why & How to Keep Track of a Food Journal Download the OSF Food Journal Now! This week, I share with you 5 reasons as to why you should have a food journal: 1. Seeing is Believing Why is having a food journal so important? If you're not feeling well and have varying stomach symptoms, energy levels, or you just want to keep track of what you eat, writing about it will get you where you want to be.  We easily forget what we eat during the day, even if it's just a quick candy bar when we stop at the gas station. If you write down what you eat and drink every time; not only will you never forget it, but you'll hold yourself accountable as well.  If you want to understand and see what you're doing with your nutrition, you have to hold yourself accountable. Keeping a food journal will help you see and believe what you're eating and how it's affecting your health.   2. Periods of Random Starvation We should not be starving at any point of the day, but sometimes we forget to eat. It happens; we get caught up at work, working on a project, or do something else that keeps us from remembering to eat a meal.  That's when the hunger hits us and it's easy to make bad choices from junk food to overeating whatever we can get our hands on. If you keep a food journal, you'll know when you're likely to be hungry and can prepare healthy meals ahead of time or keep nutritious snack foods with you wherever you go.    3. Pay Attention to Your Energy Levels Our energy levels can really vary throughout an entire day. This food journal will help you better understand your energy levels and how different types of food and beverages affect you.  4. Hindsight is 20/20 Not only will your food journal help you notice your eating patterns today, but these patterns will help you better understand your body.  When you pay attention to when your body has different reactions, you know what to avoid. Especially if your following a specific diet such as the Ketogenic Diet and you need to take a fiber supplement.  5. Track Patterns That Pop-up Everywhere Keep track of patterns that pop up everywhere: your regular energy versus when it's low or high. What did you consume that could cause your insulin to spike and then lead you to feeling exuasted? When do you feel happy? When do you feel grumpy? Your body symptoms, feelings, and energy can tell you so much about the food and beverages you're consuming and what they're doing to your body.      Understand & Balance Your Competitive Side Dr. Mike Young loves to compete. Whether it's against himself or with another person, Mike uses his competitive side to his advantage to reach a goal and get to the next level. To get to that next level, he looked up to and really listened to his mentors.  Whether it's for your career, a sport or your health, find someone who can help you get competive with yourself and push you to take the next step to get to a new level.    Connect With Us!
