Steven Pinker (@sapinker) is a psychology professor at Harvard, one of the world's leading authorities on language and the mind, and an author of several bestsellers. His latest is Rationality: What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters. What We Discuss with Steven Pinker: Why, by most metrics, older generations are mistaken when they proclaim: "Things were better back in my day!" Alternatives we might consider if Universal Basic Income can't sustainably solve the problem of housing and feeding a workforce increasingly unemployed by automation. Why nostalgia is overrated, and how criticizing the present is very often a way of criticizing your rivals. If we're really living, as Steven says, in "the most peaceable era in our species' existence," how does he explain why we still have wars, famines, uprisings, and genocides? What sentiment mapping shows us about the power of the media to manipulate us into seeing the world in a heavily negative light even as it's improving constantly on every measurable level. And much more... When looking for ways to finance his dental degree, Dan Hammer came across the Health Professional Scholarship offered by the Navy. His receipt of this scholarship formulated the trajectory of his career as an oral surgeon. Dan's journey has involved treating war warriors as a GPR, completing a head and neck fellowship, and helping to develop the digital adaptation of the “jaw in a day” surgery. Following in the footsteps of many OMS pioneers, he has done all of this with a single degree, and he explains why he does not believe he is not disadvantaged by this fact. Although there are some tradeoffs to working in the military, there are also numerous benefits, and Dan openly discusses the pros and cons of his chosen career path in today's episode. Dan also offers some valuable advice around getting as much exposure as possible to your fields of interest (no matter how trivial an activity may seem), listening to the opinions of other professionals (even if you don't agree with them), and a key to optimal parenting! Key Points From This Episode:Why Dan joined the Navy.Dan's experience as a GPR in Bethesda, Maryland in 2011. What inspired Dan to do a head and neck fellowship. Where Dan is currently working. Some of the pioneers in the OMS field who had a single degree. Legal and political elements of practicing surgery with a single degree.Benefits of working in the armed forces. Dan's first flap out of fellowship. The collaborative multidisciplinary environment that Dan works in. Compensation that Dan receives through working in the military. A tradeoff that you need to accept when you become an active-duty oral surgeon. The variety of procedures on which Dan spends his time. Dan explains the “jaw in a day” surgery in more detail, as well as the “digital jaw in a day” adaptation that he and his team came up with. The value that lies in listening, and getting as much exposure as you can in your fields of interest. The correlation between Dan's work and home life. Advice from Dan around raising children. Dan's favorite quote: Comparison is the thief of joy. Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Dr. Dan Hammer on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/drdanhammer/?hl=en Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek — https://simonsinek.com/product/leaders-eat-last-book/ Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink — https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-Ownership-U-S-Navy-SEALs/dp/1250067057 Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins — https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Hurt-Me-Master-Your/dp/1544512287 Dr. Grant Stucki Email — grantstucki@gmail.comDr. Grant Stucki Phone — 720-441-6059

The Lost Presentation That Launched The 4-Hour Workweek — “Secrets of Doing More with Less in a Digital World” from SXSW 2007 | Brought to you by “5-Bullet Friday,” my very own email newsletter. More on it below. Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life. This is a special episode, which features my very first speech at SXSW in March of 2007! I didn't know that a recording existed, and it was a great surprise when Cal Newport, author of Deep Work and writer for The New Yorker sent it to me. He used it as part of his research for a recent article that was published in The New Yorker titled “Revisiting The 4-Hour Workweek: How Tim Ferriss's 2007 manifesto anticipated our current moment of professional upheaval.” And the 2007 SXSW speech was really the event that put everything into high gear. Influential tech bloggers who had heard the SXSW talk wrote about The 4-Hour Workweek, which put it on the radar of bigger media outlets. Eventually, the book made it onto The New York Times Best Sellers list, where it stayed, more or less, for the next seven years. It's been a wild ride. One last thing: Hugh Forrest, if you're listening, thank you again for giving me a shot way back in the day! Please enjoy! This episode is brought to you by “5-Bullet Friday,” my very own email newsletter that every Friday features five bullet points highlighting cool things I've found that week, including apps, books, documentaries, gadgets, albums, articles, TV shows, new hacks or tricks, and—of course—all sorts of weird stuff I've dug up from around the world. It's free, it's always going to be free, and you can subscribe now at tim.blog/friday.*For show notes and past guests, please visit tim.blog/podcast.Sign up for Tim's email newsletter (“5-Bullet Friday”) at tim.blog/friday.For transcripts of episodes, go to tim.blog/transcripts.Discover Tim's books: tim.blog/books.Follow Tim:Twitter: twitter.com/tferriss Instagram: instagram.com/timferrissFacebook: facebook.com/timferriss YouTube: youtube.com/timferrissPast guests on The Tim Ferriss Show include Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Jackman, Dr. Jane Goodall, LeBron James, Kevin Hart, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Jamie Foxx, Matthew McConaughey, Esther Perel, Elizabeth Gilbert, Terry Crews, Sia, Yuval Noah Harari, Malcolm Gladwell, Madeleine Albright, Cheryl Strayed, Jim Collins, Mary Karr, Maria Popova, Sam Harris, Michael Phelps, Bob Iger, Edward Norton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Neil Strauss, Ken Burns, Maria Sharapova, Marc Andreessen, Neil Gaiman, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Jocko Willink, Daniel Ek, Kelly Slater, Dr. Peter Attia, Seth Godin, Howard Marks, Dr. Brené Brown, Eric Schmidt, Michael Lewis, Joe Gebbia, Michael Pollan, Dr. Jordan Peterson, Vince Vaughn, Brian Koppelman, Ramit Sethi, Dax Shepard, Tony Robbins, Jim Dethmer, Dan Harris, Ray Dalio, Naval Ravikant, Vitalik Buterin, Elizabeth Lesser, Amanda Palmer, Katie Haun, Sir Richard Branson, Chuck Palahniuk, Arianna Huffington, Reid Hoffman, Bill Burr, Whitney Cummings, Rick Rubin, Dr. Vivek Murthy, Darren Aronofsky, and many more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have a wonderful guest Mike Sarraille, who shares his military journey, how his life was saved by a comrade during a combat mission, leaderships, why self-preservation is vital for being a leader, the significance of training and managing talent, feedback loop and self-assessment, and the secrets on how to be a millionaire! Mike Sarraille is an entrepreneur, a keynote speaker, an expert in leadership development, talent acquisition, and talent management, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer and a former enlisted Recon Marine and Scout-Sniper, a former principal at Echelon Front, a management consulting firm alongside the co-authors of Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink, and Leif Babin. He is the founder, managing partner, and CEO of EF Overwatch, a specialized executive search firm, and talent advisory that finds high-performing business leaders for senior, executive, or other critical leadership positions. Also, he co-authored the book, ‘The Talent War: How Special Operations and Great Organizations Win on Talent' and a columnist for Men's Journal and Men's Fitness under ‘The Everyday Warrior' column. When Mike retires from the military after 20 years of service, that's when he starts having self-reflection, conceptualizing things, and learning from his experiences. He realized that leadership, skills, and characteristics evolved during those dark times in the military field. Thus, he let himself grow and learn the things he must know and use this to make a new career in entrepreneurship.  Now, he has become one of the experts in this field. Prior to that, he experiences ups and downs. But even with having that tough-guy persona, he believes that in order to stay in the game, you should not be afraid to talk to people when you're feeling off, and ultimately seek God's help. One thing that he encourages young people to do! Some Questions I Ask: For those who don't know who Mike is, and what EF Overwatch is, give us a little bit of a background, and history real quick? (00:52) Being able to humanize such a dark part of the military, and still be able to perform and function insanely, where do those that come from? (02:58) Going back to your own journey, what were some of those moments that you felt like you wanted to quit, and what got you pushing through? (05:33) You mentioned, leadership, skills, and characteristics evolved during some of those dark times, what does your reflective process look like? How should people who want to be great leaders deal with trauma or challenges, process some of these things, and use them as weapons instead of hiding them out and being ashamed of them? (08:10) How did you have this patience and persistence to keep pushing every day no matter what was in front of you?  (14:03) You talk about recharge, what do you do to refill the cup? (16:59) If you were to give yourself an award for quality or characteristic that you're at least led to that you felt was your superpower that you had a little bit of an edge on your brothers and sisters, what would that be and why? (19:05) How do you unplug and come home and still live intentionally with your wife, your family, and your health beyond just the “job or the career that you've chosen for yourself”? (20:42) With the people around you that you give permission to kind of hold you accountable, how critical is that not only in the team and in the organizational environment but in the personal environment for people to really achieve optimum and peak performance and just get the most out of themselves in life? (23:23) It takes time to be an expert in a particular field, how do you communicate that to the young hustler? (33:27) What are some of the best organizations doing in terms of motivating, inspiring, empowering, and really equipping their people? How are they helping them sharpen their axes, and what does that look like in today's landscape? (37:29) How does preparation tie into this civilian and entrepreneurial world? (44:51) Just give us a broad spectrum on what the Talent War Group has to offer for the individuals that want to engage with you guys? (47:33) In This Episode, You Will Learn: Feedback loop: Why you need to slow down when bad things happen (09:30) Mike's definition of courage (12:04) The 4 must-characteristics on to be a high performer in the operation (24:36) The steps on how to get more money (31:35) Quotes: “It's okay to talk to people when you're feeling off.” “Impact into others in a life of constant achievement.” “The greatest currency in life is not money, it impacts other people.” “As a leader, you wait for the last.” “If you're completely selfless, and you're giving to others, there's a point to where you can't give anymore.” “It's the small little things that indirect approach that ultimately leads you to make more money or whatever goal you want to reach.” “Good things take time.” “There is an infinite return on investing in people.” “If you don't manage your talent, your talent will leave you.” “You can never eliminate risks but you can mitigate it through preparation.” “Fortune actually favors the prepared.” “The people that are victims in life are the ones that were ill-prepared.” “People don't rise to the occasion at the end of the day, they fall to the rebel of training.” Connect with Mike Sarraile on: The Talent War Group The Talent War book by Mike Sarraile

Jocko Willink, an American author, podcaster, and retired United States Navy officer are one of what I considered the ultimate Choose Yourself-"er" out there! When I saw that he wrote a new book, Final Spin, I thought it would be one of the leadership books that he had written before, but no! It was a thriller novel! I had him on to talk about why he choose to write a novel, and what inspired him to write a thriller novel. The stories that he shared were heartfelt fascinating. Of course, other than the book, I also asked his opinion on what's going on in America, and are we doomed? Listen to the full episode, and tweet at me @jaltucher on twitter to tell what you've learned in this episode! My new book Skip The Line is out! Jocko Willink is a decorated, retired U.S. Navy Seal Officer, the author of several books, two of which include Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Leadership. He is the co-founder of Echelon Front, where he is a leadership instructor, speaker, and executive coach. Jocko has spent twenty years in the U.S. Navy Seal Teams, starting as an enlisted SEAL and rising through the ranks to become a SEAL officer. As Commander of SEAL Team 3's Task Unit "Bruiser" during the Battle of Ramadi, he orchestrated SEAL operations that helped the ready-first brigade of the U.S. Army's first armored division to bring stability to the violent war-torn city. Task Unit "Bruiser" became the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraqi war. Jocko returned from Iraq to serve as an officer in charge of training for all West Coast SEAL teams. There, he spearheaded the development of leadership training and personally instructed and mentored the next generation of SEAL leaders who have continued to perform with great success on the battlefield. During his career, Jocko Willink was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and numerous other personal and unit awards. In 2010, he retired from the Navy and launched Echelon Front with Leif Babin, where he teaches the leadership principles he learned on the battlefield to help others lead and win. Clients include individuals, teams, companies, and organizations across a wide range of industries and fields. Today, we are going to be talking about how Jocko takes charge of his team and family by applying the same tools in both aspects of his life. He's also going to be talking about why it's critical to distance yourself from chaos, mayhem, and our own emotions to make rational decisions. He's going to talk about how even though you may not know the right course of action for your kids, you shouldn't force decisions on them. Finally, Jocko says you must explain to your kids the why behind everything you ask of them.
