Gary travels to Ipswich Town to speak with assistant coach Lee Grant (since then he's been appointed head coach at Huddersfield Town) to talk about his unique journey in the game, plus his insights to individual development. Lee was a pro goalkeeper at Manchester United and then joined Kieran McKenna's staff as a forwards coach, before recently taking the job at Huddersfield. Player development is often associated with the youth game, but Lee explains how the staff at Ipswich approach the detail and how elements like science, data, analysis and psychology are incorporated along the way. Phenomenal insight and an inspiring journey!!

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob and Yoeri Pegel discuss the unique challenges and demands faced by goalkeepers in modern football, particularly in the context of Yoeri's transition from Ajax to San Diego FC. They explore the specialized training required for goalkeepers, the evolving role of goalkeepers in the game, and the importance of tailored strength and conditioning programs. The discussion also touches on the testing and monitoring of goalkeeper performance, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of their physical demands and the future of goalkeeper training. In this conversation, Yoeri discusses the intricacies of training and testing for goalkeepers, focusing on lateral movement, physical capacities, and the differences in training compared to outfield players. He emphasizes the importance of profiling athletes to tailor training programs effectively, the significance of frontal plane strength, and the role of plyometrics in goalkeeper performance. Yoeri also shares his future aspirations for developing assessment methods and training techniques for goalkeepers. Main talking points: Goalkeeper training is often less specialized in strength and conditioning compared to outfield players. Plyometrics should be integrated into goalkeeper training. Assessing upper extremity strength is important for goalkeepers. Training should be periodized based on practice demands. Deep tier plyometrics can enhance force production at speed. Lateral jump capacity is crucial for goalkeepers' performance.

We're often asked how much longer we can continue to interview goalkeepers for. How can you think up new topics? How can you keep it fresh? Doesn't every interview become the same after a while? Is the aim to have every goalkeeper to have ever played on the Goalkeepers' Union Podcast? Granted, that last question might be a bit of a stretch. The others, however, are all part and parcel of what makes each chat with each goalkeeper that little bit unique. Finding that one aspect of the story that somehow hasn't yet been told on previous episodes. For Jayson Leutwiler, it was reflecting on his career just weeks after announcing his retirement from professional football - a first for the podcast. Here, from his home in the North West of England, we discuss the Canadian's processes leading up to the decision, how he felt afterwards and what life has in store post-goalkeeping. Tobin and Christen are joined by an icon and inspiration, U.S. Soccer World Cup Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist goalkeeper Briana Scurry. In their conversation they discuss Briana's love of tackle football at a young age and how it led to her unusual path to the USWNT, how visualizing who you want to be when you return to where you came from was important to her, the media's unwillingness to tell her entire story, how integrity set her up for a successful second act and so much more. Plus, Tobin describes her perfect day, Christen describes her day to day training regimen and even more with your Community Questions!
