A podcast for sabs, by sabs.
What better way to hunt Britain's fastest land mammal than on foot with small hounds? Yet that's what beagle and basset packs do. Fortunately, sabs are also ready to stop them whenever they can. Gizzie spoke with a member of Severn Vale Hunt Saboteurs about hare hunting on foot and what sabbing it looks like today. And there's a brief interlude about so-called 'trap hares'. - A PDF of John Phibbs's Field Sports and Brownian Design can be found here: https://scumremover.files.wordpress.com/2022/06/field-sports-and-brownian-design.pdf - Check out Severn Vale Hunt Saboteurs on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SevernValeSabs/ Closing song is "The Hare's Lament" by Susan McKeown.
Helping a fox, hare or deer cover their scent is one of the most basic methods of sabotaging hunting. But there is some skill in choosing when and where to use it. So Gizzie Rascal spoke with former HSA tactics officer Colin Skilton about how to effectively use citronella, both as a pre- and post-spray. There is also a bit of history on the term 'red herring'. - Tactics section of the HSA website: https://www.huntsabs.org.uk/tactics/hsa-tactics/ - Wordhistories.net article on the term red herring: https://wordhistories.net/2017/07/06/red-herring-origin/ Featured image is by Shropshire Hunt Saboteurs. Closing track is "Pigs In a Blanket" by Rudimentary Peni.
A person's race/ethnicity doesn't matter until it matters, so Gizzie speaks with Ico about being a person of colour amongst a very white sabbing community. - The academic study from which the quote about the Countryside Alliance is taken can be read here: https://sci-hub.st/https://doi.org/10.1177/0192512117696417 - The 2003 Telegraph article can be read here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1440489/Black-woman-is-new-face-of-the-hunt.html - See the Countryside Alliance advert featuring Sarah Lake here: https://www.shutterstock.com/editorial/image-editorial/black-huntswoman-sarah-lake-launching-new-advert-426904a Closing song is "I Heard You Want Your Country Back" by Bob Vylan.
Puffer was attacked by badger baiters while trying to defend a sett in April 2021. He was left nearly for dead, but clambered back to life and lived to tell the tale. https://scumremover.wordpress.com/2021/10/31/episode-37-attacked-by-badger-baiters/
Something a little different. A mixtape filled with folk punk, protest folk and a couple of sea shanties for good measures. Stitched together with samples from across the board to brighten up those long rides home after a hard day in the fields.
Part 2 of Gizzie's chat with Mel Broughton. This time Mel shares his experiences as a hunt saboteur both in his early days and since he's been released from prison, and talk about how sabs have long been the backbone of the UK's animal rights movement. There's also a bit of shit-talking about today's so-called 'vegans'. Hosted by Gizzie Rascal. Produced by Aggy T. Closing song is "Boxing Day" by Rob Johnson.
Mel Broughton's activity has spanned the animal rights spectrum. He's most familiar as a face of SPEAC and SPEAK, the anti-vivisection campaigns. However, he also has a long history with hunt sabotage. In this first of two parts, Gizzie Rascal talks to Mel about his background, time with the SPEAC/SPEAK campaigns and the scourge of undercover coppers. Hosted by Gizzie Rascal. Produced by Aggy T. - SPEAK website: https://speakcampaigns.org/ - SPEAK Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SpeakCampaign - Undercover Research Group's article on SPEAK: https://undercoverresearch.net/2016/07/13/the-case-of-gary-r-abigail-l/ Closing song is "ACAB" by ZillaKami.
Lancashire Hunt Sabs tackle some of the most difficult sabbing terrain in this country. However, the hills and fells of the Lake District aren't all negative: they also offer a number of tactical advantages to sabs. And that's essential because the fell packs targeted by the Lancashire group are particularly gruesome and bloodthirsty. We chatted to Duncan from the group to find out more. Hosted by Gizzie Rascal. Produced by Aggy T. - Lancashire Hunt Sabs Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/lancashire.huntsabs - Stop Hunting on the Nation's Land Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/Stop-Hunting-on-the-Nations-Land-110530057004500 - Scum Remover episode with National Dis-Trust here: https://scumremover.wordpress.com/2019/03/19/episode-12-national-dis-trust/ Closing song is "Deceptive Ideals" by Polemic.
Melbourne sabs were one of the first groups this podcast spoke to, way back in 2018. A lot has happened since then. Gizzie Rascal caught up with the group to learn more about how things have changed, progressed and gone horribly right or wrong. At the time of recording, Australia's hunting season was about to begin; at the time of publishing, the coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to all such activities. The immediatre future of hunting in the country - as in the UK - is uncertain. But this episode should nonetheless be an interesting listen. - Melbourne Hunt Saboteurs Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MelbourneHuntSabs/ Opening song is "Baptism" by Crystal Castles. Closing song is "Gates of Hell" by Antagonist AD.
I spoke to Mendip Hunt Sabs, a relatively new group that nonetheless has carved a name out for itself in difficult circumstances. It almost solely takes on the Mendip Farmers Hunt, which is beloved by Tory psuedo-gent and Ian Bone's favourite father, Jacob Rees-Mogg.
Traps and snares are all too common within hunt country. You'll no doubt have come across loads of them while sabbing, and likely when spending non-sab time in the countryside as well. I was interested to learn more bout them from someone that specialises in the intentions and effects of these devices, so I contacted Simon from the National Anti-Snaring Campaign to hear what he had to say. - The National Anti-Snaring Campaign website has photos of many trap and snare designs. - Against Corvid Traps website. - Moorland Monitors has good videos on different types of traps on its Facebook page.
Gizzie Rascal speaks to a sab experienced in drone piloting to find out more about how they could effective in sabotaging hunts. Closing song is "Berkshire Cunt" by Conflict.

On the Wild Side includes a section on hunt sabs in the UK, and we spend some time talking about this part of the film. - On the Wild Side website: https://www.onthewildsideinitiative.com - On the Wild Side Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onthewildsideinitiative/ - On the Wild Side Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/onthewildsideinitiative/ - Which Side podcast episode featuring Tommy Knowles (for reference, as the audio no longer works): https://whichsidepodcast.com/tommy-knowles-wildlife-defence-league/ Closing song is "They Like to Kill" from the On the Wild Side soundtrack.
