Our first storyteller is Rad Wilkins, who as a wildlife biologist embraced the title of “poop ologist” and carried a pungent, fermented concoction called “the brew” into the backcountry to entice grizzly bears. When the love of his life came to visit his remote camp, he had to quickly learn the true rules of bear country before a romantic proposal turned into a terrifying, close encounter in a story that he calls “Wild Proposals”. Rad Watkins is a lifelong nature lover and conservationist based in Missoula, Montana. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Missoula Conservation District, where he helps lead efforts to protect local streams, wildlife, and working lands. His career has taken him from the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest studying endangered seabirds, to Glacier National Park collecting grizzly bear DNA, to the Northwoods of Wisconsin tracking wolves and rehabbing bald eagles. Rad also loves personal development, and he's a certified life coach who does some leadership speaking and training. At home, he, his wife Gretchen, and their kids, Lena and Norris, enjoy doing what Montanans do best: floating rivers, skiing, hiking, and spending time outdoors with their dogs and horses. You can find Rad on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. In our next story, Bridget Feerick flies thousands of miles to Peru and connects with a mysterious, motorcycling solo traveler. With a language barrier, a gut feeling, and a wild invitation to ride with him to Canada, she must decide if taking a leap of faith is worth the risk of a true-life adventure. Bridget calls her story “My Gut Says WHAT!?…and it was Awesome!” Thanks for listening. Bridget Feerick started her journey on this planet being born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. She traveled the world before making her home in Missoula, Montana and has continued to explore this country and the world beyond. Her passion for the outdoors is matched by a deep commitment to community engagement and social justice. Bridget holds people in transitions using her intuitive powers as an organizer, cleaner, birth/postpartum/death doula, yoga instructor, herbalist, reiki and sound healing practitioner, and so on and so forth. Oh, and she likes to get weird whether it’s through her performance art pieces or just trying to be free in a world with too many boxes. She hopes to empower and inspire as many people as she can to tap into their own intuitive powers. Trying to escape the dark Missoula winter, a staycation house-sitting gig promises a hot tub and mountain views for Marc Moss, and instead, delivers freezing temperatures and the demanding care of a dog, a cat, and eleven chickens. What starts as a simple favor quickly turns into a crisis when a frantic call from Chile reveals an unfortunate fire and a scramble to rehouse the traumatized poultry. Marc calls his story “The Girls”. Marc Moss founded Tell Us Something in 2011 and lives with his life partner, Joyce, and their perpetual kitten, Ziggy on Missoula's historic Northside. While trekking deep into the Bob Marshall Wilderness to photograph the monumental Chinese Wall, Brian Christianson finally slows down to appreciate the remote mountain solitude with his partner. When a tiny movement catches their eye, they hold their breath for what could be the wildlife encounter of a lifetime. Brian calls his story “Ridge Lessons”. Brian Christianson's love for mountains began on the pages of books while growing up in Southern Minnesota. A family trip to Colorado at age 10 confirmed the future: mountains or bust. He proceeded to study photography and geography at the University of Colorado before moving to Montana in 2008. Brian works as a nature photographer with a curiosity for wilderness in Western Montana. He shares a life with his wife Linds and cat Roo.

Walkin' on the Wild Side

Hey y'all and it's time for another episode of Walkin' on the Wild Side!  This episode, we're fawning over white-tailed deer.  These animals are some of the most recognizable and common mammals in many areas.  Whether you see them hiking, out in a field, or along side a road (yikes!), deer are one of those animals that draw mixed emotions.  They are truly amazing animals, but can be a nuisance in the back yard, a danger along roads, or a source of food and sport for many.  Join us to learn a little more about smallest member of the Cervidae family in the U.S.Here's some interesting websites about white-tailed deer:https://www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/species/deer.htmlhttps://www.fs.usda.gov/database/feis/animals/mammal/odvi/all.htmlDeer and Driving:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2351989425004585https://www.dnr.sc.gov/news/2022/oct/oct17-drivers.phpInterested in having Marvin and Gabrielle speak at your event?  Email us below for more information!Email us at www.walkingonthewildside21@gmail.comFollow us on our two webpages to see photos and blogs about our podcasts and nature in general.  We will be posting our Yellowstone pics here:Nature Nook PhotographyWalkin' on the Wild SideYou can listen directly from our website at: https://walkinonthewildside.buzzsprout.com, or from any of the major podcast platforms, such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, Stitcher, and more!Subscribe to our podcasts on any of these platforms and leave us a review! We hope you enjoy listening to our podcast and welcome your emails, comments, and feedback.  Hopefully, we will inspire you to get out there and start "Walkin' on the Wild Side"!We'd love to hear from you with your questions and comments!

We return to Wildside Exotic Rescue in Herefordshire, where owner Lindsay Mckenna now cares for 11 pumas, a lynx, a serval and many other animals which were exotic captives needing new and better homes. Our 4 guests describe their own sightings of pumas wild in Britain, and compare them to the pumas at Wildside...   Jenny near Bath watched a puma exploring her garden at 6.30am in 2023 before it loped off into the adjacent wood. Tracey re-lives her close encounter with a grey-tone puma in Chile, and prompts discussion on pumas avoiding people even when close by. John Bilney explains how he sets up trail cams at woodland edges in the south Cotswolds, after he confronted two pumas on a cycle to work one morning.Jon from Carmarthen recounts the hissing puma in front of his car as it cornered a bend in south-west Wales, experienced just 5 days before the podcast recording.  The guests chat with Lindsay about the challenges of caring for pumas at Wildside, as we hear the puma sounds in the background as they feed on portions of locally culled fallow deer. In this encore episode of The Backyard Naturalists, Debbie and Laurie revisit their inspiring conversation with certified forest therapy guide and author Melanie Choukas-Bradley to explore the healing power of forest bathing, also known as shinrin-yoku. Originating in Japan in the 1980s, this mindful practice invites us to slow down, unplug, and fully immerse ourselves in the sights, sounds, scents, and textures of the natural world. Melanie shares the fascinating science behind forest bathing—including research showing it can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, boost immune function, and improve sleep—while reminding us that connecting with nature is both simple and accessible. Together, they discuss how even urban areas like Washington, D.C. offer abundant opportunities for meaningful time outdoors, and how parks, greenways, and even your own backyard can become spaces for restoration. You'll learn what to expect on a guided forest bathing walk, how to practice on your own, and why regular time in nature can transform your overall well-being. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or just beginning to explore mindful time outdoors, this episode will inspire you to step outside, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the living world around you. If you have ideas for future episodes, we'd love to hear from you—reach out on Facebook or through our website. Please visit and support our presenting sponsor, Backyard Birds—a true mecca for bird lovers located in Matthews, North Carolina (next to Dairy Queen), just southeast of Charlotte. Thanks for listening to The Backyard Naturalists! We hope your day is filled with the wonders of nature. Want a drive that actually feels like driving? We chart Texas routes that reward focus and finesse—FM 170 along Big Bend Ranch State Park with vast desert sight lines, the short-but-epic Palo Duro descent into red rock, Devil's Backbone across Hill Country ridges, the razor-tight Park Road 37 by Medina Lake, and the legendary Twisted Sisters with its switchbacks, blind crests, and breathtaking ranchland vistas. You'll get practical advice on when to go, what to watch, and how to prep so the only surprise is the view around the next bend. Then we flip the script and explore the wild side of automotive branding. Porsche's chef-level knives, Honda's quietly brilliant HondaJet, BMW and McLaren's high-end bicycles, Peugeot's heritage pepper mills, Toyota's loom-to-engine lineage, Mercedes' limited surfboards, and Bugatti's carbon fiber furniture show how engineering DNA travels from test tracks to kitchens, oceans, and living rooms. We dig into why these products make strategic sense—and where they're pure theater for the superfan. To ground it all, we share a hands-on review of the Lexus RX 450h Plus. The PHEV powertrain delivers smooth, satisfying acceleration and real-world efficiency, wrapped in a distinctive design that stands out from copycat SUVs. Inside, the minimalist cabin feels premium and calm, though we still want a few more physical controls for eyes-up driving. With up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity, thoughtful packaging, and that excellent Mark Levinson sound, the RX 450h Plus competes credibly with the GLE and X5—especially if your routine fits the electric range sweet spot.If you're mapping a Hill Country loop, chasing bluebonnets, or just curious why a car brand would build a pepper mill, this episode brings the roads, the rationale, and the road test. Enjoyed the ride? “We want to pay proper homage to the ten years of people that have come and made this their home.”When Wildflower co-founder and visionary Topher Boehm announced he was to close the Marrickville venue the brewers and blenders had called home for a decade, it didn't just send ripples through the beer world – the story was picked up by mainstream media too.Perhaps that's only to be expected: in terms of impact made per litre of beer sold, there can be few operations anywhere on the planet that would come close to this magical corner of the Australian beer world. That impact can be measured by the quality and sheer delightfulness of their many releases, the transformative nature of their Marrickville base, the team's advocacy for other producers and growers, as well as for better ways of producing and growing, and in the generous manner in which they would share their experiences, knowledge and learnings. As soon as we got word Wildflower was to close at the end of May – at least for now, and in its current form – there was no question we'd invite him back onto the show. So grab a glass – or bottle – of your favourite mixed-culture beer and settle in as Topher tells us what led him here, how he thinks Wildflower might evolve, and shares stories and reflections from the past decade-plus.It's our longest episode to date – which won't surprise anyone who knows our guest – but we're sure you won't be calling stumps early. Before we get to Topher, James and Will discuss the impending opening of a venue by an operation with similarities to Wildflower, the ongoing rise of non-alc beers, the arrival in the Crafty directory of Melbourne bars Rose Island and mates., plus the opening of entries for the 2026 Australian International Beer Awards, and the latest events and giveaways for our Crafty Cabal beer club members. Please like, subscribe and tell your beer-loving mates if you enjoy the show too!Start of segments: 16:18 – Topher Boehm Part 1 54:04 – The High Country Hop 2026 Preview 1 59:31 – Topher Boehm Part 2To find out more about featuring on The Crafty Pint Podcast or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

Welcome back to Walkin' on the Wild Side.  Happy Holidays from Gabrielle and I, and we are in the Holiday spirit!  This episode, we talk about one of the most recognizable songs and nut (actually more like a fruit), the chestnut.  Chestnuts and Christmas just seem to go together, but sadly, because of a blight, the once dominant and massive tree that produced delicious nuts for wildlife, people, and generations of  Christmas around the world was eliminated from the forests of eastern US in the blink of an eye (40 years).  We'll talk about how chestnuts went from a holiday staple to just a verse in a song.  What happened and can you still get chestnuts?  Join us as we sit around the fire pit on the back porch and reminisce about what used to be and the possibility that one day, the chestnut will once again, return to it's former glory. You can learn more about chestnuts from these websites:Chestnut blight:  https://tacf.org/history-american-chestnut/Chestnut research:  https://www.esf.edu/chestnut/index.phphttps://www.finedininglovers.com/explore/articles/chestnuts-z-26-things-about-chestnutsHow chestnuts are used in Italian cooking:  https://www.lacucinaitaliana.com/italian-food/how-to-cook/roasting-chestnuts-a-guide-to-the-cherished-italian-holiday-traditionThe Italian Chestnut Growers Consortium:  https://www.consorziocastanicoltori.it/ (in italian, so please get google to translate)Interested in having Marvin and Gabrielle speak at your event?

On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Tannis Gaffney, Chief Marketing Officer of Travel Alberta. Tannis walks us through the strategy behind Canada's wild side branding and the secret behind making their brand permeate everything they do. She shares more about Travel Alberta's collaboration with Indigenous Tourism Alberta and how that relationship has evolved, opening up new immersive cultural experiences for the right types of travelers. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why Alberta chose to reposition its brand around "Canada's Wild Side" and how leaning into national identity helps the province stand out How research on traveler sentiment influenced their messaging How Travel Alberta encourages creativity and agility, allowing the team to rapidly jump on relevant trends and opportunities How their partnerships are creating authentic, immersive cultural experiences for visitors What strategies Alberta is using to attract American travelers, especially in the winter season How Travel Alberta operates as part of a collaborative "wolf pack" ecosystem, working closely with DMOs, operators, and national partners to drive tourism growth across the province Reimagining Alberta and Showing Off Canada's Wild Side Tannis and her team faced a dilemma familiar to many regional DMOs: international travelers often know Canada's big cities, but not its provinces. Travel Alberta strategically shifted their messaging and instead of leaning exclusively on provincial identity, they now lead with the power of the Canada brand and then highlight Alberta as its most adventurous, untamed offering. By anchoring Alberta's appeal in both its jaw-dropping natural diversity (like six UNESCO World Heritage sites) and the undeniable warmth of its people, the new branding sidesteps "provincial" confusion, offering travelers an invitation to experience "Canada's Alberta", a place where wild landscapes meet welcoming hospitality. Creative Agility Tannis credits much of Alberta's marketing agility to her strategic council. This monthly internal brainstorm is an incubator for spontaneous, opportunistic marketing ideas—ways to seize trends or conversations in innovative, resourceful ways. Take "The Last of Us" TV series, filmed in Alberta. The team quickly released itineraries mapping out the show's filming locations. The response was phenomenal: a thousand percent spike in website traffic as fans sought to experience these sites in real life. Another standout was the "Alberta's Least Liked" campaign, humorously spotlighting untouched, under-visited gems with a tongue-in-cheek video set to sad music and a sobbing moose. The effort won a creative innovation award at the Skift Global Forum and effectively helped spread tourism beyond hotspots, encouraging discovery without overburdening popular destinations. Partnerships and Indigenous Tourism A cornerstone of Alberta's approach is genuine partnership across organizations, sectors, and communities. Travel Alberta's collaboration with Indigenous Tourism Alberta (ITA) stands out as a model. Not only do Travel Alberta and ITA share office space, but their relationship is built on time, trust, and mutual respect. ITA leads in experience development with their members; Travel Alberta amplifies their stories and ensures the right, respectful traveler connects with authentic Indigenous experiences, like the acclaimed Métis Crossing, a boutique hotel and cultural hub on the North Saskatchewan River. This partnership reflects Indigenous values of sustainability, relationship-building, and stewardship, offering a far richer, more transformative experience for visitors. Think you know Jane Austen? In this episode, we explore the wild side of Austen's writings, life, and legacy with noted scholar Devoney Looser, who makes the case for Austen as a far more daring and unconventional figure than her prim Victorian reputation suggests. Whether you're new to Austen or a longtime Janeite, this episode offers a lively take on the beloved author—and reminds us why we're all a little wild for Austen.Devoney Looser is Regents Professor of English at Arizona State University, a Guggenheim Fellow, an NEH Public Scholar, and a Rockefeller Bellagio Fellow. She is the author of Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës, The Making of Jane Austen, The Daily Jane Austen, and her latest, Wild for Austen: A Rebellious, Subversive, and Untamed Jane, which will be released September 2, 2025. A life member of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) and frequent speaker at JASNA conferences, Looser has also skated in roller derby under the name Stone Cold Jane Austen. For a transcript and show notes, visit https://jasna.org/austen/podcast/ep26/.*********Visit our website: www.jasna.orgFollow us on Instagram and FacebookSubscribe to the podcast on our YouTube channelEmail: podcast@jasna.org
