Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their cycle of Offbeat Musicals with a "Two-Shot" on a pair of turn-of-the-millennium glam-rock extravaganzas: Todd Haynes' "Velvet Goldmine" (1998) and John Cameron Mitchell's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (2001). Marking their fifth - yes, fifth - discussion on a Todd Haynes film, the trio begin by unpacking "Velvet Goldmine" and its refraction of the legacies of 1970s glam-rock icons such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, T. Rex, and Roxy Music. Presented in "Citizen Kane"-like fashion, the film conveys a distinct impression of a well-known popular music era without ever mentioning any of the aforementioned artists by name, and wandering in and out of the realms that often classify a musical. Premiering around the same time off-Broadway was the show that would then be adapted into the second film of focus, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," unambiguously a musical, but one for people who may less typically gravitate to the genre. Drawing from many of the same influences in music, "Hedwig" portrays the unique story of the titular performer, from her fraught upbringing in East Berlin to her stateside music career with backing band the Angry Inch, and the numerous experiences that fan her rock-and-roll flames along the way.Listen to Dougie's Glam-a-Rama here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOjsoFA6he4_bWfjlCtNFoPf9Xr2cOofn&si=Vth2DPJed7RKNa7xIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is a multi-award-winning British chef, writer, broadcaster and campaigner, best known as the creator of River Cottage. He joins the Go To Food podcast fresh from the release of his new book, High Fibre Heroes, before settling into a gloriously wide-ranging conversation full of stories from a life spent cooking, eating, questioning and occasionally causing national outrage.Hugh looks back on childhood in Gloucestershire, learning to cook alongside his mother, helping make shepherd's pie from leftover roast lamb, and later becoming the “pastry chef” for her 1970s dinner parties. He shares tales from Oxford dinner parties, smoked haddock obsessions, and his time at the River Cafe, where he made lemon tart for Rose Gray and secretly doubled the chocolate in Elizabeth David's chocolate cake — only to be politely rumbled by Elizabeth David herself. The conversation also revisits Hugh's early television years, from Cook on the Wild Side to TV Dinners, including the infamous placenta pâté episode that earned an Ofcom complaint and became part of British food TV folklore. He reflects on the beginnings of River Cottage, moving from London to Dorset, learning from farmers, foragers and local characters, and building a world that helped change the way Britain thought about food, farming and self-sufficiency.Along the way, there are stories of roadkill rumours, wild boar charcuterie, Gordon Ramsay's pigs, Jamie Oliver, school food, restaurant culture, barbecue hogget, decorative garnishes, and why you should never put an oyster shell on mashed potato. Funny, thoughtful and occasionally surreal, this is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at his storytelling best.Order Hugh's new book High Fibre Heroes - https://shorturl.at/9Wk19Watch and Subscribe To Our Youtube Videos Here - https://www.youtube.com/@gotofoodOrder Ben's Incredible Book - All You Can Eat - By Clicking Here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/All-You-Can-Eat-British/dp/1805221523Get 2 Months of Blinq For Free - With Code - GOTOBLINQ - https://blinqme.com/Order The Greatest Meat In The Country From HG Walter Here & Have Restaurant Quality Meals From Home - www.hgwalter.com Hosted on Acast. She shares practical regulation tools such as diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, nose breathing, grounding, and simple vagus nerve practices like ear massage.  The conversation links nervous system regulation to visibility, congruence, vocal tone, and leadership presence, explores how conditioning—especially for women—can make speaking up feel unsafe, and emphasizes vulnerability, community, and brand evolution. Harris also outlines WILD as wonder, intuition, love yourself, and dance.Time markers:01:48 Body Wisdom Signals06:47 Creating Inner Safety09:37 Breath and Vagus Tools13:19 Safety Fuels Visibility17:30 Why We Hold Back20:23 Feminine Energy and Pace27:43 Wild Wellbeing Origin Story28:06 WILD Acronym Explained36:42 Brand Evolution Mindset38:06 Rapid Fire and Wrap Up41:55 Where to Find Robin Get in touch with Robyn Harris:https://www.facebook.com/robyn.harris.wild.wellbeing/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynharris-wildwellbeing   https://wildrobyn.substack.com/https://www.youtube.com/@W-I-L-D-TVGet in touch with Brigitte Bojkowszky:Website BridgetBrands: https://www.bridgetbrands.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bojkowszkyb/ Website Retreat “I AM BECOMING”: https://event.i-am-escape.com/i-am-becomingAmazon booksInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bridgetbrandsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bridgetbrandsBook a call: https://calendly.com/bridgetbrands/20-min-discoverycall

Welcome back to Walkin' on the Wild Side!  This episode of our podcast is a "mostly Marvin" podcast, as Gabrielle and I have both been very busy, but haven't had an opportunity to get together for a podcast!  Since Spring is, well, springin', I was wondering just how many folks realize that there is a supermarket in their own backyards.  Many of the household, so-called "weeds" are actually some pretty darn delicious edible plants with nutritious benefits, and many are referred to as superfoods.  Rich in vitamins and minerals, these plants have been safely consumed by generations.  Join "mainly Marvin" for this podcast as he wonders about weeds, and learn a little about many of the common but maybe not well-known plants that can be consumed.  Here are some websites for more information:https://www.almanac.com/edible-weeds-garden-eating-weedshttps://honest-food.net/edible-weeds/https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/foraging-harvesting-indigenous-wild-plants-best-practices.pdfhttps://blog.herbsociety.org/foraging-wild-weeds-seasonal-greens/Stinging Nettle Eating CompetitionInterested in having Marvin and Gabrielle speak at your event?  Email us below for more information!Email us at www.walkingonthewildside21@gmail.comFollow us on our two webpages to see photos and blogs about our podcasts and nature in general.  We will be posting our Yellowstone pics here:Nature Nook PhotographyWalkin' on the Wild SideYou can listen directly from our website at: https://walkinonthewildside.buzzsprout.com, or from any of the major podcast platforms, such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, Stitcher, and more!Subscribe to our podcasts on any of these platforms and leave us a review! We hope you enjoy listening to our podcast and welcome your emails, comments, and feedback.  Hopefully, we will inspire you to get out there and start "Walkin' on the Wild Side"!We'd love to hear from you with your questions and comments!

The Science of Hatches: What the Salmonfly Project Is Teaching Anglers with James Frakes and Jackson Birrell

Watch the full video:  https://wetflyswing.com/salmonflyproject Take the Angler Survey:  https://salmonflyproject.org/survey/ Support the Salmonfly Project:  https://salmonflyproject.org/donate/ In this episode, we dig deep into one of the most important but often misunderstood parts of fly fishing: entomology, or the study of aquatic insects, and how it directly connects to success on the water. James Frakes and Jackson Birrell from the Salmonfly Project break this topic down in a way that makes it approachable, practical, and actually useful for anglers at any level. Instead of overwhelming you with scientific jargon or Latin names, they focus on what matters most: understanding bugs well enough to make better decisions when fish are feeding. Right from the start, the conversation shifts the way you think about "matching the hatch." It's not just about picking the right fly—it's about understanding timing, behavior, and movement. When you start thinking not only like a fish, but also like the bug, everything begins to click. Why Bugs Matter More Than You Think One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that bugs are not just "fish food" they are the foundation of the entire river ecosystem. Aquatic insects: Feed trout and drive feeding behavior Support birds and other wildlife Help clean and maintain healthy rivers Act as early warning signs for water quality In fact, over 70% of freshwater species are insects, which puts into perspective just how important they are. The guys emphasize that it's not just about having a lot of bugs it's about diversity. Different species hatch at different times, creating consistent feeding opportunities for trout throughout the year. Without that diversity, fishing becomes less predictable and often less productive.   The Big 3: Mayflies, Stoneflies, and Caddisflies To simplify things, they focus on the three major insect groups every angler should understand: 1. Mayflies These are the classic "dry fly" bugs most anglers think of. They have a unique lifecycle that includes multiple fishable stages: Nymph Emerger Dun (adult) Spinner (final stage) Because mayflies take a long time to emerge and sit in the surface film, trout feed on them gently those classic sipping rises. A key insight:  Mayflies are often most vulnerable during emergence, making emerger and cripple patterns incredibly effective. 2. Stoneflies Stoneflies behave very differently. Instead of emerging mid-river, they: Crawl to the banks Hatch out of the water Return to lay eggs by skittering or "splatting" on the surface This creates a completely different feeding response from trout:  More aggressive, splashy eats One of the most surprising takeaways: During big hatches like salmonflies, fish may already be completely full from eating nymphs That's why sometimes fish ignore giant dry flies even when bugs are everywhere 3. Caddisflies Caddis are fast, active, and incredibly abundant. Their lifecycle includes: Larva Pupa (fast-rising stage) Adult (moth-like) Unlike mayflies, caddis emerge quickly and don't sit long on the surface. This leads to:  Faster, more aggressive trout feeding (the classic "caddis rise") A big takeaway here: Fishing wet flies or pupae is often more effective than dry flies during caddis activity Understanding Behavior Over Identification One of the most important themes in this episode is that you don't need to memorize every bug species. Instead, focus on: What type of bug it is (mayfly, stonefly, caddis) Where it lives (bottom, rocks, banks) How it moves (slow drift vs fast swim vs skitter) When it emerges If you understand those basics, you can:  Anticipate feeding behavior instead of reacting to it Hatch Timing and Strategy The episode also dives into how hatches actually happen and how to fish them. Key concepts: Hatches are driven by water temperature and seasonal timing Spinner falls are driven by air temperature Bugs emerge in predictable windows (morning, midday, evening) Some practical strategies: Fish nymphs before the hatch begins Switch to emergers right before activity Match surface patterns only when fish are clearly feeding up top They also highlight how: Cloudy, humid weather often improves mayfly fishing Sunny afternoons can be better for stoneflies Evening and even nighttime can be prime for caddis Real Science Meets Real Fishing What makes this episode stand out is how the Salmonfly Project connects science directly to angling. Their work includes: Studying insect populations Tracking environmental changes Running angler-driven data collection They explain how insects act as "canaries in the coal mine"s howing early signs of river health changes before fish populations decline. This ties into a bigger message:  Understanding bugs makes you not just a better angler—but a better steward of the river The Wild Side of Bugs This episode also mixes in some unforgettable (and slightly crazy) insights: Caddis larvae build underwater nets and fight over territory Some stoneflies live underground and show up in people's wells Mayflies have been around longer than dinosaurs Certain bugs can literally "chirp" underwater to compete These moments highlight something important:  There's an entire world happening beneath your feet that most anglers never see The Big Takeaway If there's one idea to walk away with, it's this: You don't need to know everything about bugs—  you just need to understand enough to predict what's happening. When you: Recognize the type of insect Understand its behavior Match your presentation accordingly You move from guessing…  to fishing with purpose. Final Thoughts This conversation is a reminder that fly fishing isn't just about casting or gear it's about awareness. The anglers who consistently find success aren't always using the fanciest flies—they're the ones paying attention to: What's happening in the water What stage the bugs are in How trout are responding And once you start seeing the river through that lens, everything changes.

In our first story, Land Tawney seizes the chance for an epic backpacking trip into the Frank Church Wilderness, made even better by the inclusion of his nine-year-old daughter and support llamas. When the intense summer heat and rugged trail push the young girl to the brink of giving up, he must trust her to make the decision to push forward or turn back. Land calls his story “Young Grit”.  Land Tawney is a 5th generation Montanan prone to wandering & good times. Land earned his Bachelor of Science focused in Wildlife Biology from The University of Montana and has been working his entire adult life to conserve public lands and water and access to them at the local, state, and federal levels. From testifying in front of Congress in Washington DC to organizing grassroots volunteers all across North America, Land walks the walk. He now co-chairs a new non-profit, American Hunters and Anglers Action Network, and works tirelessly to protect our public lands for present and future generations. Hayley Glassic was driven by a childhood dream of couture and must abandon fashion for a seemingly stable career path, only to have a single brochure unexpectedly reroute her life. A misunderstanding at a job interview for a job in “Cordova, AK” plunges her into the grueling world of salmon hatcheries, where she finds her true calling in the remote wilderness. Hayley calls her story “Origin Story”. Hayley Glassic migrated from her birthplace in Pennsylvania to Georgia (the state not the country) and eventually to Montana where she has lived for 8 years. Landing in Missoula has been a blessing for friendship, love, heartbreak, growth, and community. After seeing tell us something in 2022, she has been waiting for a prompt that would fit for her to share a story. Hayley was given lots of cheeky feedback from high school friends of how poor of a storyteller she is. By sharing this story, she hopes to break that streak. Bryan Dalpes hopes to turn his Alaskan summer fling into a real relationship, but ignores food safety for a giant steak, leading to a disastrous morning ritual right outside his would-be love's A-frame door. When his partner abruptly ends things after returning from a grueling trip, he must navigate gossip and miscommunication to save the relationship. Brian calls his story “The Rile”. Growing up on the mean streets of suburban Colorado, Bryan found refuge in the punk rock and skateboarding communities. While voyaging on the courageous journey from child to man-child his life course changed when he discovered the moving meditation that is rock climbing. After honing his climbing and alpine skills he spent summers in Alaska guiding ice climbing, glacier exploration, and backcountry trips. Since those years he has continued on to be a guide, instructor, coach, firefighter/EMT, Covid task force specialist, seedling nursery crew lead, mobile beer canner, freelance video editor, graphic artist, handyman, landscaper, ski patroller, house sitter, marketplace hustler…the list goes on. He is the proud dad of a floppy eared, special needs dog named Ron who is regularly recognized on the trail and pined over by complete strangers Feeling overwhelmed by her spinning “plates” of responsibility, Betsy Funk receives an unexpected invitation to join the Peace Corps in Africa. She risks leaving her daughter and draining her finances to chase a desperate call for help, embarking on a journey that will test her limits and change her perspective on what it means to keep life together. Betsy calls her story “Mother”. After 40 years of teaching through story, Betsy loves to share stories with folks she encounters. Either listening to or telling them she frames her world around ” what’s your story?” She finds her moments of shared joy and tears continue to make her a better person. She hopes her adventures inspire some wonder and joy in you. The goal is always to make the world a better place.  Be kind…you got this.

Our first storyteller is Rad Wilkins, who as a wildlife biologist embraced the title of “poop ologist” and carried a pungent, fermented concoction called “the brew” into the backcountry to entice grizzly bears. When the love of his life came to visit his remote camp, he had to quickly learn the true rules of bear country before a romantic proposal turned into a terrifying, close encounter in a story that he calls “Wild Proposals”. Rad Watkins is a lifelong nature lover and conservationist based in Missoula, Montana. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Missoula Conservation District, where he helps lead efforts to protect local streams, wildlife, and working lands. His career has taken him from the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest studying endangered seabirds, to Glacier National Park collecting grizzly bear DNA, to the Northwoods of Wisconsin tracking wolves and rehabbing bald eagles. Rad also loves personal development, and he's a certified life coach who does some leadership speaking and training. At home, he, his wife Gretchen, and their kids, Lena and Norris, enjoy doing what Montanans do best: floating rivers, skiing, hiking, and spending time outdoors with their dogs and horses. You can find Rad on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. In our next story, Bridget Feerick flies thousands of miles to Peru and connects with a mysterious, motorcycling solo traveler. With a language barrier, a gut feeling, and a wild invitation to ride with him to Canada, she must decide if taking a leap of faith is worth the risk of a true-life adventure. Bridget calls her story “My Gut Says WHAT!?…and it was Awesome!” Thanks for listening. Bridget Feerick started her journey on this planet being born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. She traveled the world before making her home in Missoula, Montana and has continued to explore this country and the world beyond. Her passion for the outdoors is matched by a deep commitment to community engagement and social justice. Bridget holds people in transitions using her intuitive powers as an organizer, cleaner, birth/postpartum/death doula, yoga instructor, herbalist, reiki and sound healing practitioner, and so on and so forth. Oh, and she likes to get weird whether it’s through her performance art pieces or just trying to be free in a world with too many boxes. She hopes to empower and inspire as many people as she can to tap into their own intuitive powers. Trying to escape the dark Missoula winter, a staycation house-sitting gig promises a hot tub and mountain views for Marc Moss, and instead, delivers freezing temperatures and the demanding care of a dog, a cat, and eleven chickens. What starts as a simple favor quickly turns into a crisis when a frantic call from Chile reveals an unfortunate fire and a scramble to rehouse the traumatized poultry. Marc calls his story “The Girls”. Marc Moss founded Tell Us Something in 2011 and lives with his life partner, Joyce, and their perpetual kitten, Ziggy on Missoula's historic Northside. While trekking deep into the Bob Marshall Wilderness to photograph the monumental Chinese Wall, Brian Christianson finally slows down to appreciate the remote mountain solitude with his partner. When a tiny movement catches their eye, they hold their breath for what could be the wildlife encounter of a lifetime. Brian calls his story “Ridge Lessons”. Brian Christianson's love for mountains began on the pages of books while growing up in Southern Minnesota. A family trip to Colorado at age 10 confirmed the future: mountains or bust. He proceeded to study photography and geography at the University of Colorado before moving to Montana in 2008. Brian works as a nature photographer with a curiosity for wilderness in Western Montana. He shares a life with his wife Linds and cat Roo.

What if birth isn't something to fear… but something your body already knows how to do?In this episode of Pop That Mumma, I'm chatting with Krisha Crossley about tapping into your wild side and what it means to prepare for a physiological, natural birth in the modern world. We talk honestly about how pregnancy today can leave so many women feeling anxious, disconnected, and scared of their own bodies, and why that makes instinctive birth feel so out of reach. We cover movement, breathing, mindset, why dilation isn't the full story, and how approaching labour with an almost athletic mindset can completely change the experience. Welcome back to Walkin' on the Wild Side.  Happy Holidays from Gabrielle and I, and we are in the Holiday spirit!  This episode, we talk about one of the most recognizable songs and nut (actually more like a fruit), the chestnut.  Chestnuts and Christmas just seem to go together, but sadly, because of a blight, the once dominant and massive tree that produced delicious nuts for wildlife, people, and generations of  Christmas around the world was eliminated from the forests of eastern US in the blink of an eye (40 years).  We'll talk about how chestnuts went from a holiday staple to just a verse in a song.  What happened and can you still get chestnuts?  Join us as we sit around the fire pit on the back porch and reminisce about what used to be and the possibility that one day, the chestnut will once again, return to it's former glory. You can learn more about chestnuts from these websites:Chestnut blight:  https://tacf.org/history-american-chestnut/Chestnut research:  https://www.esf.edu/chestnut/index.phphttps://www.finedininglovers.com/explore/articles/chestnuts-z-26-things-about-chestnutsHow chestnuts are used in Italian cooking:  https://www.lacucinaitaliana.com/italian-food/how-to-cook/roasting-chestnuts-a-guide-to-the-cherished-italian-holiday-traditionThe Italian Chestnut Growers Consortium:  https://www.consorziocastanicoltori.it/ (in italian, so please get google to translate)Interested in having Marvin and Gabrielle speak at your event?

On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Tannis Gaffney, Chief Marketing Officer of Travel Alberta. Tannis walks us through the strategy behind Canada's wild side branding and the secret behind making their brand permeate everything they do. She shares more about Travel Alberta's collaboration with Indigenous Tourism Alberta and how that relationship has evolved, opening up new immersive cultural experiences for the right types of travelers. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why Alberta chose to reposition its brand around "Canada's Wild Side" and how leaning into national identity helps the province stand out How research on traveler sentiment influenced their messaging How Travel Alberta encourages creativity and agility, allowing the team to rapidly jump on relevant trends and opportunities How their partnerships are creating authentic, immersive cultural experiences for visitors What strategies Alberta is using to attract American travelers, especially in the winter season How Travel Alberta operates as part of a collaborative "wolf pack" ecosystem, working closely with DMOs, operators, and national partners to drive tourism growth across the province Reimagining Alberta and Showing Off Canada's Wild Side Tannis and her team faced a dilemma familiar to many regional DMOs: international travelers often know Canada's big cities, but not its provinces. Travel Alberta strategically shifted their messaging and instead of leaning exclusively on provincial identity, they now lead with the power of the Canada brand and then highlight Alberta as its most adventurous, untamed offering. By anchoring Alberta's appeal in both its jaw-dropping natural diversity (like six UNESCO World Heritage sites) and the undeniable warmth of its people, the new branding sidesteps "provincial" confusion, offering travelers an invitation to experience "Canada's Alberta", a place where wild landscapes meet welcoming hospitality. Creative Agility Tannis credits much of Alberta's marketing agility to her strategic council. This monthly internal brainstorm is an incubator for spontaneous, opportunistic marketing ideas—ways to seize trends or conversations in innovative, resourceful ways. Take "The Last of Us" TV series, filmed in Alberta. The team quickly released itineraries mapping out the show's filming locations. The response was phenomenal: a thousand percent spike in website traffic as fans sought to experience these sites in real life. Another standout was the "Alberta's Least Liked" campaign, humorously spotlighting untouched, under-visited gems with a tongue-in-cheek video set to sad music and a sobbing moose. The effort won a creative innovation award at the Skift Global Forum and effectively helped spread tourism beyond hotspots, encouraging discovery without overburdening popular destinations. Partnerships and Indigenous Tourism A cornerstone of Alberta's approach is genuine partnership across organizations, sectors, and communities. Travel Alberta's collaboration with Indigenous Tourism Alberta (ITA) stands out as a model. Not only do Travel Alberta and ITA share office space, but their relationship is built on time, trust, and mutual respect. ITA leads in experience development with their members; Travel Alberta amplifies their stories and ensures the right, respectful traveler connects with authentic Indigenous experiences, like the acclaimed Métis Crossing, a boutique hotel and cultural hub on the North Saskatchewan River. This partnership reflects Indigenous values of sustainability, relationship-building, and stewardship, offering a far richer, more transformative experience for visitors. From new naturalism and earthworks at Wildside, to the breathtaking views across Tresco Island, to extraordinary fairy tale hotels, the girls discuss special moments and numerous takeaways — both for their gardens at home, and for future visits to this very special area of the UK, often under-visited by American garden-trippers looking for “The Big Five.” (Though which gardens constitute “The Big Five” is still up for debate.)For the WHOLE story, this is an episode you'll particularly appreciate by following up on The Garden Mixer Youtube channel, where the video version is #jamfirst packed with photos and snark.
