Welcome back to another episode! This week, Jamie and Fabian prepare to meet up in person (sorry, Scott) and discuss all things engagement. From making PE even worse (but somehow more fun) with chaotic math relay races to a deep-dive parks project that might just save national parks (or at least get kids to research them). Scott shares his foolproof bribery tactics for review committees and how duct tape solves all classroom problems. Fabian experiments with Scramble Centers—where structured chaos meets meaningful learning. Plus, with a game featuring chickens in detective hats we wrap it all up in our ever-popular segment, “What'cha been playin'…?”Join @hofmannedu.bsky.social, @jedijamie.bsky.social and @findingmyaloha.bsky.social each week by subscribing to our podcast and rating and reviewing us on Apple Podcasts! The Trump administration is outsmarting the activist judges attempting to block his America-first agenda. From a recent case involving a pro-Hamas activist's arrest to ongoing lawsuits designed to undermine presidential authority, I talk about how the administration is staying one step ahead. I also dive into the Supreme Court case that could overturn decades of judicial activism, specifically the 1935 Humphrey's Executor decision, and restore the president's full power over the executive branch. But one Town Hall stands out, as Trump refuses to take questions from the crowd and instead slowly sways on stage to music for 40 minutes, while a dumbfounded crowd wonders wtf is going on?Now imagine the media coverage if Biden had swayed silently on stage to music for 40 minutes without speaking. We literally had to invent a term:  "sanewashing" to describe how the media treats Donald Trump, and its pathetic, because if Trump wins journalists will die.And we put on our tinfoil hats to delve into conspiracies around the potential invoking of the 25th Amendment, which provides a method to rapidly remove a president over incompetence, if Trump becomes President, as the 2024 election draws near. And still they come. Every week, it seems, there's a new book celebrating resistance to Nazism. The latest is Two Wheels to Freedom, Arthur J. Magida's true story of Cioma Schonhaus, a 20 year-old Jewish art student in Nazi Berlin who successfully forged papers for hundreds of Jews. Yes, of course, Magida's new book is, in part, about the triumph of human agency in fighting the evils of Nazism. But as Magida - who has written two other acclaimed books about resistance to Nazi Germany - explains, the story of Cioma Schonhaus can also be read as a parable of contemporary America. If Trump does indeed win the November election and begin deporting millions of people, Magida argues, then we might all have a moral obligation to mimic Cioma Schonhaus and become heroic resisters ourselves. Arthur J. Magida has been nominated for a Pulitzer and won multiple awards. His last two books—Code Name Madeleine (“absolutely gripping,” “tightly plotted”) and The Nazi Séance (“an astonishing story, brilliantly told,” “haunting, vivid”)—are optioned for films. [A dip into the archives for a fan favorite from 2019 - featuring a show-closing ode to the late, great 70s' TV game show "Celebrity Bowling"!] + + + We hit the lanes this week to delve into the fascinating story of the nation's first and only attempt at a professional team bowling league – a seemingly anachronistic idea by today's standards, but a concept that made total sense in the early 1960s when pro bowling was in ascendance and the sport was seemingly everywhere on television. Bowlers Journal columnist and historian J.R. “Dr. Jake” Schmidt (The Bowling Chronicles: Collected Writings of Dr. Jake) joins the podcast to lay out the curious backstory, short-lived season(s) and unwitting legacy of the National Bowling League (1960-62) – an ambitious, but altogether logical attempt to professionalize bowling in the style of America's other major team sports, and capitalize on the big money purses beginning to fuel national TV competitions during the late 1950s. Amidst a bevy of popular made-for-TV competitions that featured various takes on head-to-head play – like NBC's weekly Championship Bowling, and primetime's Make That Spare (ABC) and Jackpot Bowling (NBC) – the coast-to-coast NBL hoped to offer bowling professionals a city-based team format, replete with purposely-designed television-friendly arenas and boisterous fans. Despite investment from deep-pocketed funders like AFL founder Lamar Hunt and oilman/Cotton Bowl creator J. Curtis Sanford (whose Dallas-based 72-lane Bronco Bowl set the standard for NBL facilities); a well-publicized draft (with then-Vice President Lyndon Johnson in attendance); and a novel scoring system that featured situational bonus points and wild-card substitutions, the NBL stumbled out of the gate devoid of the very thing it needed most to succeed – a national television contract. Outfoxed by the nascent Pro Bowlers Association – which was simultaneously pioneering a laddered individual vs. individual national tour format with a similarly fledgling ABC-TV – the NBL had to rely solely on individual gates while trying to convince other networks to take notice.  Early crowds were sparse to virtually non-existent, and most pros found the money, light workload and broad television exposure of the PBA's “Pro Bowlers' Tour” to be the better path to ply their wares. It's a tale of what might have been – and we “spare” no question in our pursuit of the story of this most intriguing of forgotten pro leagues! + + +   SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS):  https://www.royalretros.com/?aff=2   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: The Bowling Chronicles: Collected Writings of Dr. Jake (2017): https://amzn.to/3Ogt6Kj   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Sometimes Inspector William Fox likes to go off script, like when chasing gangsters in his cigarette boat on the St. Lawrence River. For one case, the RCMP officer with a penchant for luxury fashion finds himself teamed up with FBI Special Agent Patrick Reilly, an Irish lad who prefers absinthe to Guinness. The pair travel overseas to track down members of a gang who have kidnapped Tracy Jordan, an American academic and archeologist with teenage ties to William. In China, Tracy has been stealthily searching for evidence of Admiral Zheng He's 15th-century connections to the area that would later be known as Nova Scotia. It's here that Tracy and her team discover what might be Ming dynasty artifacts transported by Zheng He's "massive treasure ships" left behind on Mi'kmaq peoples' ancestral land.Outfoxed - a William Fox Adventure is a slick, globe-trotting adventure that involves the RCMP and FBI chasing the Foo Dog Triad operating in Hong Kong, mainland China, and New York City. Like Tracy and Kevin Steptoe, a Mi'kmaq lawyer, the gangsters are after the ancient Chinese treasures. Outfoxed is also a political thriller, diving deeply into the power struggles of the Communist Party of China and its shadowy operatives. It wades into the Fox family's political past in South Korea, where a tragedy took place that still haunts William years later.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio.
