For our final episode of the season, we're covering a Korean-American superstar. Starting out on The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun has gone from strength to strength on both sides of the Pacific. He's made indie action horrors like Joe Lynch's Mayhem, while also collaborating with South Korean auteurs like Bong Joon-ho on Okja and Mickey 17 and Lee Chang-dong on Burning. Yeun has transitioned easily between film and TV with roles in the Prime Video animated superhero show Invincible and on Netflix's series Beef. The actor was Oscar-nominated for his role in 2020's Minari and has consistently worked with interesting directors, such as Jordan Peele on Nope and Boots Riley on Sorry to Bother You. With his new Robert Pattinson-starring Mickey 17, Korean director Bong Joon Ho displays his knack for blending genres and entertainingly covering sociopolitical and interpersonal themes. Mucci thinks he hasn't done that better than Okja, an adventure-thriller-heist-comedy with strong animal welfare themes. Lando, on the other hand, advocates for the dark and dreary serial killer mystery that is Memories of Murder, with strong characterizations and inspiration from real-life horrors. And when we take a Recess, Judge Huy says No Caps in Court as he quizzes Lando and Mucci with true/false questions about their respective films. OTR Theme by Lando and Mucci. Steffan and Gavia review Mickey 17, the new sci-fi comedy from filmmaker Bong Joon Ho (Parasite). Robert Pattinson stars as a man who signs up for a years-long space voyage, agreeing to a grueling contract where his body can be killed and resurrected again and again. Echoing Bong's work on films like Snowpiercer and Okja, this provides the basis for a bleak yet absurd anti-capitalist satire.

This week, Gene HackMarch continues with an outstanding acting showdown between two of the all-time greats of American screen acting, as our man Gene stands tete-a-tete with Denzel down in the briny deep with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. It's 1995's Crimson Tide, directed by Tony Scott, featuring script punch-up from Quentin Tarantino, and starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, George Dzundza, Matt Craven, Danny Nucci, Steve Zahn and Daniel von Bargen. A naval submarine thriller of the highest order, it's the first of five collaborations between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, and while it's easily the high water mark of the bunch it's also plain to see why they would be eager to re-team time and time again to try to recapture this magic. The acting showdown at the heart of this movie's conflict is its greatest spectacle, and while the movie got shut out at the Oscars come awards season, it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, losing all three. Womp womp. Plus: Hayley's been to the cinema and is back with a theatrical field report on the new Bong, Mickey 17! And J Mo is hooked on The Traitors. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our conversation, Crimson Tide is available to stream on Disney+. Other works discussed on this episode include Snowpiercer, Okja, The Host, Poor Things, Mississippi Burning, The Rock, The Domino Principle, Big Brother, The Mole, Josie and the Pussycats, The Hunt For Red October, The Pelican Brief, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), Unstoppable, and Deja Vu among others. Gene HackMarch rolls on next week with 1974's The Conversation, though you can bet the Tony Scott talk with continue as we will surely be talking more about its 90s spiritual sequel (and Crimson Tide follow-up) Enemy of the State as well. The Conversation is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel, while Enemy of the State can be found on Disney+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

FROM MONKEY TO……MICKEY! NEW EPISODE PRINTED! Innovative visualist, Oscar winning Korean director Bong Joon Ho roars back with the new sci-fi satire Mickey 17, starring the glittery vampire OR Batman (depending on who you talk to) Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie (another WS+ notch for her), Steven Yuen, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette. Fresh off the out of the box Oscar sweep for the film Parasite, Bong's resume swings back to some of the sci fi narrative and themes tread in his other films (The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja, anyone?). BUT does this allegorical genre mashup stick the landing or does Bong's crock pot overflow with too many ingredients?

Bong Joon-ho's dedication to making Snowpiercer, and making it his way, is as always a true testament to his greatness as a director, and a visionary director at that. You don't start something in 2005 and take seven years to develop it if you don't have that passion for the project. In many ways the scale and scope of Snowpiercer led Bong to want to make smaller films - his next film would be Okja for Netflix, and then he'd make Parasite - undoubtedly his most important, acclaimed and successful film, and the gateway for many in the west to truly accept Korean and international cinema after it swept the boards at the Oscars. But Snowpiercer remains one of his most special, and most overlooked entries, despite the star-studded cast, terrific action set pieces and thoughtful social commentary. This would be Bong's first English language movie, and the irony is that in a movie where the entire train is controlled by a wealthy white power-mad elitist, a wealthy white power-mad elitist would end up controlling its release...It's also the annual birthday episode; I've got a lovely black jelly birthday cake here, I wonder what it's made out of.... In which the Mister joins me in reviewing OKJA (2017), a Netflix original film by director Bong Joon Ho with writing credits to Bong Joon Ho and Jon Ronson.  The story follows Mija (Seo-hyun Ahn) and her genetically modified super pig friend, Okja.  For ten years the 2 have grown up and formed a loving bond.  Okja, unfortunately is the property of Mirando Corporation and after ten years the company has decided to come collect their prized pigs.  Mija's grandfather gives her a golden pig to ease the loss of Okja but she is compelled to go save her pig and friend.  And what follows is a breathtakingly beautiful story that is rooted in Mija and Okja's love for each other but also addresses topics like the meat industry, genetically modified foods and corporate greed.  An absolute MUST WATCH.  The film has a run time of 2 h and is rated TV-MA.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. TA-DAM ! This is an excerpt of a members only episode. To listen to the full episode, become a member at http://seventh-row.com/join One of the best movies of 2022, Jerzy Skolimowski's visually and aurally inventive Eo, is now in cinemas for a limited time. The film is about injustice in the animal world seen through the eyes of a donkey. It's a great big screen experience (for sound and image) so we're going deep on the film this week. Editor-in-Chief Alex Heeney and Executive Editor Orla Smith are joined by Associate Editor Dr. Brett "Empathy" Pardy.  About the excerpt In this excerpt, we discuss whether Eo is presented as an "exceptional" animal/donkey in the film. Many films about animals depict them as exceptional, like Air Bud the golden retriever who can play basketball or Okja the superpig. In many ways, Skolimowski's film bucks convention here by making Eo a fairly normal donkey whose experiences (and the way he's depicted) render him a subject of interest rather than because he's a particularly special donkey.  We ask, why do we care about animals on screen (in general) and why do we care about Eo? Does a home exist for a donkey like Eo? Become a member to listen to the rest of the discussion, which includes: In the full episode, we go even deeper on how the film creates empathy for a donkey and give a donkey the appearance of a full emotional inner-life. We also compare Eo to other recent films about (or featuring) animals — including White God, Lean on Pete, Cow, and Gunda — to help us understand how empathy is usually extended toward on-screen animals. Finally, we discuss how some of the best politically conscious films being made today, with youthful exuberance, are coming from directors over 70.   01:51 Why are we talking about Eo? 09:18 Placing Eo within the canon of donkey stories 13:53 Exceptional donkeys (this section is the only one available free)32:00 Anthropomorphising animals  46:56 An older generation of political filmmakers Show Notes Become a member for access to all of our upcoming episodes Listen to our previous podcast season on Women at Cannes Read Alex Heeney's review of Eo Get your copy of our ebook on Lean on Pete, a film about an unexceptional horse Read Alex Heeney's White God interview with the film's director and animal trainer Get your copy of our ebook Road to nowhere: Kelly Reichardt's broken American dreams. This marks the first episode of our new series, What Else Have They Done? For avid Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer) fans, and followers of Quentin Tarantino's infamous movie lists, this film is a legendary exemplar of the murder mystery genre, and it's currently streaming on Hulu. John's cinematography teacher and fancy film school unknowingly inspired this selection. If you haven't seen it before, holy crap, get ready to be rocked. Set in a rural South Korean town, inspired by the 1986-1991 Hwaseong Serial Murders, Song Kang-ho (Parasite) leads a team of investigators and detectives who are driven crazy as they try to solve a series of seemingly unsolvable rape-murders. Additional Cast/Crew: Kim Sang-kyung, Roe-ha Kim, Jae-ho Song, Kim Roi-ha, Song Jae-ho, Go Seo-hee, Park No-shik, Jeon Mi-seon, Roe-ha Kim, Hyung Koo Kim. @PhilTheFilipino & @MrEricAlmighty have had an interest to explore foreign shows and films more than ever before. So for that reason, we will occasionally highlight international gems, and for this episode, we watched a film called Memories of Murder. We keep our thoughts spoiler-free for a majority of this episode before we transition into spoiler discussion.Synopsis: In 1986, two simple-minded detectives are assigned to a double murder investigation in a South Korean province. But when the murderer strikes several more times with the same pattern, the detectives realize that they are chasing the country's first documented serial killer. Relying on only their basic skills and tools, they attempt to piece together the clues and solve the case in this thriller based on true events.Make sure to listen to the first ever episode for this series, where we talk about Train to Busan, and the most recent episode from this series covering another Bong Joo-ho film called Okja!
