Resilience used to mean something. With each generation, we find comfort taking over inconveniences. Or, does strength just look different now? What should we do when we feel stuck in this modern world? Can we retrain our brains to overcome adversity or are we too far gone? In a world obsessed with shortcuts, motivation hacks, and instant gratification, Steve White argues that true transformation still comes down to one thing: learning how to keep getting up. After battling severe cognitive decline, alcoholism, seizures, depression, and near-suicidal hopelessness, Steve rebuilt his mind, body, and spirit from the ground up through relentless discipline, purpose-driven action, and a decision to fight for his life one day at a time. This conversation explores what modern society gets wrong about resilience, why younger generations are struggling to find meaning, how purpose and service create real strength, and what it practically takes to rebuild yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually in just 100 days. In this powerful episode of the Kreatures of Habit Podcast, Michael Chernow sits down with Steve White to unpack a raw story of brain injury, addiction, and a relentless fight back to life. After years of football-related concussions, seizures, cognitive decline, and misdiagnoses, Steve hit a breaking point and made a decision to go “all in” on his recovery.Steve shares why discipline—not motivation—is the foundation of transformation, and how adopting a purpose-driven mindset he calls “hold the keep” became the anchor for his healing. He explains how cynicism shuts down growth and neuroplasticity, while urgency, belief, and focused thinking can accelerate recovery beyond what most people think is possible. The conversation dives into the exact tools and routines that fueled his comeback: daily movement, cold exposure, gratitude walks, brain training, supplementation, and stacking therapies with a team-based approach to health. Steve also discusses building a system for long-term healing and why it's never too late to take ownership and fight for your life. This episode is a powerful reminder that no matter how far you've fallen, transformation is possible—but only if you're willing to go all in.TIMESTAMPS:02:39 Urgency Builds Neuroplasticity03:49 Steve's Injury Story04:27 Rock Bottom and Ownership08:26 Mentors and Team Health10:28 Replace Addiction With Discipline18:07 Never Too Late to Fight22:07 Discipline Applied Anywhere24:13 Imagination and Your Path28:17 Manifesting as Discipline31:08 Morning Routine Blueprint34:15 Cold Therapy and Recovery36:31 Brain Hits and Cognitive Gains38:06 Train the Brain Daily40:23 Mind Muscle Connection43:52 Clinic and Home Teams Mission50:51 Purpose Kindness and Never Quitting54:43 Where to Follow and Final Wrap

In this episode, former CFL player Steve White shares his extraordinary journey from the depths of physical and emotional collapse to rebuilding a life rooted in health, faith, and discipline. After years of concussions, post-concussion syndrome, seizures, illness, and personal loss, Steve hit rock bottom. What followed was not just recovery but a total reconstruction of his brain, body, and faith. Drawing on his experience and the principles behind his Brae 100 method, Steve explains how neurological injuries, like concussions, can deeply affect emotions and identity, and why rebuilding self-trust is a critical part of healing. Through disciplined systems focused on breath, movement, nutrition, nervous-system regulation, and purpose, Steve demonstrates how science and faith-based approaches can guide someone back from the brink to strength and resilience. In this conversation, we explore: ·       How concussions and post-concussion syndrome (PCS) impact brain health and emotional regulation. ·       The psychological toll of neurological injuries and how they affect identity. ·       The process of rebuilding self-trust and confidence after a physical and personal collapse. ·       The mindset and discipline behind the Brae 100 method for holistic recovery. Send a textBig news drops: we're adding two late-season mountain classics to the Cirque Series calendar and turning it into a true coast-to-coast slate. Jay Peak in Vermont brings 7.1 miles with 3,044 feet of climbing and a rugged, two-peak ridge that blends flowy running with real technical spice. One week later, Mount Baldy in Southern California delivers 9.1 miles and 3,926 feet of vert over the iconic Devil's Backbone, cresting Mount San Antonio at 11,000-plus feet with the Pacific on the horizon and LA at your back.We break down what makes each venue special. Jay Peak sits perfectly for Northeast athletes and our neighbors in Quebec and Montreal, with a tram-side festival zone and fast, character-filled double singletrack on the descent. Baldy is rootsy and high-alpine, shockingly close to Ontario Airport, and built for a finish-line party at a mom-and-pop ski hill with deep local pride. Expect steep pushes, ridge exposure, big views, and descents you can actually open up on—plus dates and temps that hit the sweet spot for post-UTMB and fall racing. We also share how a 10-race national series comes together: thoughtful course design that avoids bottlenecks, a summit-first ethos, and an evolving overall-points plan that rewards your best finishes rather than pure volume. With three East races now at or above 3,000 feet of vert and seven in the West, the stage is set for new rivalries, fresh community energy, and one unified title worth chasing. Registration is open, dates are set—Jay Peak on September 26 and Mount Baldy on October 3—and the competition looks fierce.Ready to pick your line and join us on the ridge? What if biohacking and AI revealed you were aging 18 years faster than you thought? Most high performers assume they're doing fine. You exercise. You eat well. Your labs come back “normal.” And yet your biology could be aging faster than your calendar. In this episode, I sit down with Dave Pascoe, the famous biohacker who has one of the slowest measured rates of aging in the world. At the end of an intensive health retreat in India, he shares his latest discoveries and methods on how he supercharges his rejuvenation and maintains his bio-regeneration edge. Dave tracks close to 1,000 blood markers, has sequenced his entire genome, and uses AI to analyze his labs, wearables, and supplement protocols. We talk about why “normal range” may be far too low a standard and how chronic stress can accelerate aging, even when someone looks fit on the outside. We also explore how artificial intelligence can help organize massive amounts of health data in ways the human brain simply cannot. And we challenge a core belief in Western medicine, asking whether joint damage truly requires replacement or if the body may still have more capacity to repair than we've been told.Dave talks about: 00:00 Regenerative medicine can prevent unnecessary joint replacement02:10 Luxury health retreats now compress months of testing into days05:10 Telomeres reveal accelerated aging in “healthy” people07:00 Chronic stress can age the body faster than poor fitness08:45 Mindset shifts measurably reduce biological stress10:40 Tracking biomarkers beats symptom-based health decisions16:35 AI enables real-time health optimization across health data22:30 Smarter supplement protocols balance precision and practicalityAdditional Resources:✨ Learn more about how to live a long and pain-free life: https://joykongmd.com/ ✨ Follow me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stemcelldrjoy/ ✨ Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_joy_kong/ —✨ Follow Steve White on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebrae100/✨ Connect with Steve White: https://www.brae100.com/—Dr. Joy Kong is a regenerative medicine and anti-aging expert. What to listen for:“Search and rescue work is the volunteer profession that you pay to do and is one of the most stressful things you can ever do, because somebody else's life could depend on what you're doing.”In part 2 of their conversation with Steve White, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett ask about the development of Hydrated Intensive Tracking (HIT), which evolved from experiments with scent-in-a-bottle methods.Steve's breakthrough came at a U.S. Police Canine Association seminar when handlers lacked marker training skills. By hybridizing traditional food-in-footstep methods with spray lines, Steve discovered that dogs crossing pavement with spray present kept their heads lower even after the spray evaporated. It's classical conditioning at work!Steve's training philosophy emphasizes creating calm, methodical working dogs rather than frantic high-energy animals. He seeks dogs with "conditioned emotional responses" of focused steadiness. He believes that clearheaded dogs perform better in difficult urban environments. This approach influenced his article training, where teaching dogs to find tiny objects like washers creates precision that makes finding larger targets effortless.Robin and Stacy zero in on the importance of generalization and stimulus control. Dogs absolutely distinguish training from operations, requiring extensive work in operational environments. Steve advocates for the "Green Eggs and Ham" principle. That is, can your dog perform here, there, everywhere? Handlers often mistake lack of stimulus control for lack of behavior knowledge. His current work with the United States Police Canine Association's Best Practices Working Group aims to preserve police canine programs by shifting focus toward the irreplaceable value of dogs' olfactory capabilities while promoting cooperation-based control methods over force-dependent approaches.Key Topics:Search Dogs vs. Examination Dogs (01:40)Evolution of Hydrated Intensive Tracking (12:09)Classical Conditioning and Surface Work (17:47)Generalization and Stimulus Control (26:48)Training for Operational Environments (36:37)Takeaways (45:23)Resources:You can find Steve White:Proactive K9 WebsiteProactive K9 Website FormsUSPCA YouTube Channel: Where you can find Steve's three-part series on odor/scent fundamentals, a 1000-hour eyes presentation where he talks about the eight indicators of dogs being on odor, and Robin's presentations about the recipe for building a great training session. We want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. The Business Growth Show

Franchisees first is more than a leadership philosophy—it's a measurable strategy that has driven real results across one of North America's leading franchise systems. For Steve White, President and COO of PuroClean, this approach has become the foundation for building a high-performance brand with strong franchisee alignment and sustainable growth. With over 35 years of experience in the franchise sector, White has held senior leadership roles at brands like Domino's Pizza and Allegra Network. Since taking the helm at PuroClean in 2013, he has led the company through a period of extraordinary growth. PuroClean has more than doubled its number of franchise locations and achieved significant increases in system-wide sales and profitability. The common thread across all of this progress is a consistent focus on putting franchisees first. This mindset is embedded into the way the organization operates. Franchisees are treated as strategic partners, not just operators. Their input is actively sought out and turned into actionable change. From onboarding and training to marketing support and technology implementation, the goal is to equip every owner with the tools and support they need to succeed in their local markets. Listening is a key component of this approach. Through structured feedback channels like system-wide surveys and franchise advisory councils, leadership is able to understand what's working, identify pain points, and make data-driven decisions that benefit the network as a whole. This level of responsiveness helps strengthen trust and contributes to higher franchisee satisfaction and retention. While many brands talk about culture, PuroClean has built its growth strategy around it. The franchisees first model reinforces accountability, improves communication, and increases performance across the system. That alignment between leadership and operators helps drive efficiency, consistency, and customer satisfaction. Technology also plays a role. With documentation and compliance being critical in the property restoration space, PuroClean is investing in AI and operational tools to reduce manual workloads and improve accuracy. These innovations are implemented with franchisees in mind, allowing them to focus more on service delivery and customer relationships. What makes this approach particularly impactful is that it scales. Whether supporting a brand-new franchisee or a multi-unit operator, the same principles apply. The company provides individualized guidance to help each location grow based on its unique goals and local conditions. That flexibility has helped PuroClean build a network that performs consistently across regions and continues to expand in both new and established markets. Steve White's background as a U.S. Army Captain and his leadership within the International Franchise Association further reinforce the values behind the franchisees first model. His involvement in veteran initiatives, industry advocacy, and franchise education speaks to a broader commitment to service, ethics, and impact. That credibility has helped position PuroClean not just as a successful brand, but as a respected voice in the franchise community. PuroClean's national presence, rooted in South Florida and operating in over 500 locations across North America, demonstrates the geographic scalability of this model. Franchisees are thriving in large metro areas and regional markets alike, supported by systems that are both adaptable and proven. Franchisees first is not a slogan—it's a strategic operating model that produces results. By aligning leadership, field support, and individual owner goals, PuroClean has built a franchise system that delivers consistent growth while staying grounded in purpose. For other franchise brands looking to improve performance and network engagement, this case illustrates the power of putting people at the center of the business. As the industry continues to evolve, models that prioritize franchisee success will be best positioned to grow, innovate, and lead. Watch the full episode on YouTube. What to listen for:Two-thirds of The Dames of Detection, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, welcome Steve White, a veteran law enforcement K9 trainer whose 46-year career began in military working dog handling in 1975.Steve discusses the challenges facing modern police canine programs, particularly how vendor-driven training models often prioritize efficiency over optimization, which creates sessions where handlers log hours without meaningful individual development.Central to Steve's philosophy is building fluency in component behaviors before chaining them together. He emphasizes the "search-locate-report" sequence as the foundation of detection work, and warns against the common mistake of teaching dogs to retrieve training aids initially. This approach creates problems through the “law of primacy:” dogs default to their earliest learned behaviors under stress, leading to dangerous outcomes like consuming narcotics or explosives.Steve draws a critical distinction between "search dogs" and "examination dogs." Medical detection dogs must systematically examine each sample rather than hunting for the strongest odor source; a dog that vaults past a Stage 1 cancer sample to alert on Stage 4 creates catastrophic consequences. Similarly, explosive detection work often requires methodical examination of luggage or spaces where missing a threat is unacceptable.Steve traces his evolution from using sport castoff dogs from Europe to developing selection criteria focused on "self-righting" dogs: calm, confident animals who never seek fights but finish them. He shows us why it's so important to understand the trade-offs inherent in every training decision! Key Topics:Steve's Background and Career Evolution (03:10)Modern Police K9 Training Challenges (08:02)European Dog Selection and Trade-offs (16:03)The Search-Locate-Report Chain (27:09)Law of Primacy in Dog Training (28:19)Building Chains Without Fluency (30:29)German Tracking Experiments and Training Methods (37:00)Training Methods and Trade-offs (44:10)Dogs as Tools of Force in Law Enforcement (48:20) Resources:You can find Steve White:Proactive K9 WebsiteProactive K9 Website Forms USPCA YouTube Channel: Where you can find Steve's three-part series on odor/scent fundamentals, a 1000-hour eyes presentation where he talks about the eight indicators of dogs being on odor, and Robin's presentations about the recipe for building a great training session. We want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Send us a textSteve White brings a refreshing perspective to mountain sports as both the West Coast Race Director for the Cirque Series and an accomplished athlete in his own right. Through our conversation, Steve offers a glimpse behind the curtain of what it takes to create memorable race experiences while maintaining his personal connection to mountains and movement. What sets Steve apart is his approach to adventure – less concerned with structure or external validation and more focused on inspiration and meaningful experiences. He describes finding running in his twenties not as a competitive pursuit but as a way to move his body and connect with nature. This philosophy has carried through to his current approach of pursuing what excites him rather than adhering to rigid training plans. The highlight of our conversation revolves around an extraordinary human-powered adventure Steve undertook last summer. Linking three significant peaks – Gannet Peak, Granite Peak, and the Grand Teton – entirely by bike and foot, this journey exemplified the self-sufficient spirit he admires in mountain runners like Anton Krupicka and Kyle Richardson. Along the way, Steve experienced a rare face-to-face encounter with a wolverine, one of only three documented in the Wind River Range at that time – a moment of pure wilderness connection that transcended athletic achievement.Throughout our discussion, Steve champions what he calls the "quiet crushers" – those who accomplish incredible feats without broadcasting them. In a social media age where adventures are often performed for an audience, his celebration of personal experience over external validation offers a compelling counterbalance to outdoor culture's sometimes relentless self-promotion.Whether you're looking to understand the inner workings of mountain race directing, seeking inspiration for your next human-powered adventure, or simply wanting to reconnect with the pure joy of moving through mountains, Steve's story reminds us why we venture into wild places – not for recognition, but for the depth of experience and connection they provide.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!
