In today's episode we talk about Citronella Essential Oil and all of the ways it can be used. It's scent is light and clean. Discovered in 1901, Citronella was the most widely used insect repellent before the 1940s. Research shows Citronella essential oil repels three mosquito species for up to eight hours. Along with repelling pests naturally, it can also clean surfaces as well as the skin and scalp! But bugs are not all it repels. Citronella can repel negative energy too! Citronella is a tall perennial grass believed to have originated in humid tropical lowland areas of southern India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. It was introduced through Europe in the 1800s. When the long-bladed leaves are steam-distilled, they gift a well-known lemon-scented essential oil that has been utilised for a range of purposes in aromatherapy, perfumery, pharmaceutics and household uses. Michael Jann is an Emmy-nominated late-night comedy writer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon for over two decades. Michael teaches screenwriting at UCLA-Extension. He co-wrote and co-produced the short animated film Bug Therapy (www.bugtherapy.film). It's a story about a mosquito who faints at the sight of blood. This story is deeply personal: Mike's son suffered a severe mental-breakdown at age 29, resulting in hospitalizations and psych wards. His ongoing recovery (fingers crossed) has fueled Mike's passion to fight the stigma of mental illness. Mike lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and writing partner Michele Jourdan. Michele's the funny one; Mike's the pretty one. In Bug Therapy, Citronella, a mosquito who faints at the sight of blood, nervously waits outside her first group therapy session, while the Pill Bug therapist, Dr. Pill tries to calm a neurotic group of bugs, each suffering from a mental-health issue: An OCD germaphobic Fly freaks when he runs out of hand sanitizer. A Dragonfly couple struggle with co-dependency; she's literally on top of him. A Grasshopper, addicted to coffee, is so jumpy, he launches himself in mid-sentence. A Praying Mantis who doesn't pray because she thinks she is God. A terrified Spider is deathly afraid of -- spiders. And, a perfectly-camouflaged Stick Bug complains that no one ever "sees" him. Throughout all this, Citronella battles her urge to flee - while Dr. Pill implores her to share her "embarrassing" problem.

Summer always brings out the mosquitoes. There are some simple things you can do to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home. • Wear Light Colored Clothing: Turns out, mosquitoes are attracted to dark colored clothing • Run Fans at Ground Level: The chemicals human bodies put off hang in the air around us and allow mosquitoes to hone in on us — and that's when the biting starts. Rapid air movement confuses mosquitoes, and dissipating these telltale human signs makes us harder to find. So set fans on the ground and turn them on to break up the scent patterns. This simple solution is surprisingly effective for spur-of-the-moment events or gatherings in your yard. Because they are so light, mosquitoes are weak flyers. The breeze from the fans makes it difficult for them to fly, keeping them out of your entertainment area. If you don't have repellent on hand, then this is the best way to get rid of mosquitoes for the moment. • Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so empty any containers that collect water regularly, such as flower pots, buckets, and bird baths. • Maintain Gutters and Drains: Clean out gutters and ensure they are not clogged, as clogged gutters can hold water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. • Keep Yard Clean: Remove any debris or leaf piles where water can collect. Trim overgrown vegetation where mosquitoes like to rest during the day. • Use Mosquito Repellents: Use mosquito repellents on your skin or clothing when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. DEET, Clove Spray, Citronella oil, Peppermint, NEEM, Lavender, Eucalyptus. • Install Screens: Ensure windows and doors have screens without holes to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. • Consider Mosquito Traps: There are various types of traps available that can help reduce mosquito populations around your property. • Natural Predators: Encourage natural predators of mosquitoes, such as dragonflies, by adding plants and water features that attract them. • Mosquito-Repelling Plants: Plant mosquito-repelling plants like citronella, lavender, marigolds, and basil around your yard. • Professional Help: In severe cases, consider contacting a pest control professional who can provide more targeted solutions. Implementing these strategies can significantly reduce the mosquito population around your home and make your outdoor spaces more enjoyable. Natural mosquito repellant is used to fight off mosquitoes & can be made from plants or other natural sources. Some popular natural bug repellents include lemon eucalyptus, citronella, and lavender. Natural mosquito repellents are generally preferred over chemical ones because they may include dangerous components. Making Natural Mosquito Repellent Yourself Making your mosquito repellent out of natural ingredients is easy. Almost every kitchen has the components needed to make mosquito repellant. The most popular and effective essential oils are Citronella, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint. These oils can be used in an air diffused or applied directly to you skin. A natural pesticide called pyrethrin is extracted from chrysanthemum blooms. This is effective against mosquitoes and other flying insects. Ingredients for Natural Mosquito Repellent A mosquito repellent may be made from a variety of common substances. The oils all include natural ingredients that deter mosquitoes. The most prevalent ingredient in bug sprays is citronella oil, which is also used to ward off mosquitoes. The lemon grass plant is the source of this fragrant ingredient. Mosquitoes and other pest insects may be driven away with citronella oil. Like many other oils, lemongrass oil is extracted from the lemon grass plant. It works well to keep mosquitoes away because of its strong lemon aroma that mosquitoes dislike. The leaves and branches of the eucalyptus tree are used to produce aromatic oil. Because of its camphoraceous solid aroma, it serves as an efficient insect repellent. Cloves are pressed to extract oil. This powerful, spicy aroma has a practical purpose: keeping insects at bay. A mosquito repellent may also be made using lavender. It has a sweet flowery aroma and may be equally effective as other insect repellents. Oil extracted from the rosemary plant has a powerful herbaceous aroma and serves as a good insect deterrent. It's possible to make a homemade mosquito repellent by combining a number of these substances. Be careful to test the repellent on a tiny patch of skin before applying it to a wide area, no matter which formula you choose. This will help determine if any substances are causing an adverse reaction. Benefits of Natural Mosquito Repellent The use of insect repellents made from natural ingredients has several advantages. The following are some of the most important benefits: Natural mosquito repellents tend to be far more benign than their chemical equivalents. This is because they do not have any potentially dangerous chemicals or poisons. Also, unlike chemical repellents, natural mosquito repellents do not cause harm to humans or animals. This is because mosquitoes are drawn to synthetic odours more than natural ones. Chemical mosquito repellents aren't the only option. However, natural insect repellents are often more comfortable to use. As a bonus, they seldom irritate the skin and usually have a more pleasing aroma. It is possible to apply natural mosquito repellents on both skin and clothes. In most cases, natural mosquito repellents may save you money compared to conventional options. This is because they are made using cheap materials and some you may already have at home. Compared to chemical repellents, natural insect repellents are safer for the environment. This is because they are free of potentially harmful & polluting chemicals. 10 Best Natural Mosquito Repellent On the market nowadays, one may choose from a wide variety of mosquito repellents that are made from natural ingredients. Here are some of the most impressive: Citronella oil: One of the most well-known natural mosquito repellents, Citronella grass oil is extracted from the leaves of the Citronella plant. The strong citrus aroma of this product is an effective insect deterrent. Peppermint oil: The oil has a strong scent similar to mint, which serves to deter insects. Eucalyptus oil: This essential oil has a robust aroma reminiscent of the forest...
Transplanted a Citronella plant from the store pot to a larger pot. In filtered sunlight like the card asked…plant has flopped right over like it's drunk! Pot has plenty of drainage. How do I fix this? Could it just be in shock from the move to a larger container? Do you think Kenny Loggins knew that his hit song would be the basis of a joke about an alfredo based traffic incident? Probably not. Did he know it would be used to show shirtless dudes playing volleyball and promoting the Air Force. Honestly, probably. This week on the podcast, the boys talk about the uselessness of Citronella candles, Will's recent death defying trip the Acadia National Park, Theo shares the story of a jerk who won an art contest with an AI generated art work, Will goes over the news of a truck transporting Alfredo sauce covering a highway in the creamy sauce and New York residents being carded for whip cream aerosol cans, Theo goes over the bold and bad new product: Cold dogs aka hot dog ice cream (and they didn't commit because the cowards didn't even make it completely hot dog flavored, it is partially chocolate flavored), and Will goes over a complex tale involving a boozy cookie business, an insane news reporter, and an affair that led to the resignation of Anchorage's mayor. In this episode Meg and Heather talk about Citronella oil, which is an excellent natural bug repellent (in fact, doTERRAs Citronella oil is registered as an insect repellent in US!) If you are looking for a natural mosquito repellent, this is an excellent option because it repels 3 different variants, lasts up to 8 hours, and does not have any of the harmful chemicals that most commercial bug repellents have in them. This can also be used as a natural lice repellent. As a DIY lice shampoo, simply add a few drops of Citronella to shampoo and scrub it into your scalp 3x per day. From an energetic standpoint, Citronella cleanses bad energy. Who knew if could be used for so many things?! doTERRA Citronella oil price - $24 retail/$18 wholesale Don't forget to register for our upcoming free classes that are scheduled for the 3rd Thursday of every month (except Sept) at www.bottlepoppinpodcast.com For more information, check out the www.bottlepoppinpodcast.com

Helping a fox, hare or deer cover their scent is one of the most basic methods of sabotaging hunting. But there is some skill in choosing when and where to use it. So Gizzie Rascal spoke with former HSA tactics officer Colin Skilton about how to effectively use citronella, both as a pre- and post-spray. There is also a bit of history on the term 'red herring'. - Tactics section of the HSA website: https://www.huntsabs.org.uk/tactics/hsa-tactics/ - Wordhistories.net article on the term red herring: https://wordhistories.net/2017/07/06/red-herring-origin/ Featured image is by Shropshire Hunt Saboteurs. Just a note, the Arthro-pod team had a pre-chat and practiced gratitude before getting into the ants, so if you want to bypass our personal updates, forward to about the 10-minute mark. Some of the things we talked about topics like classification of ants, ants and communism, ants as pests, ants as aphid farmers, ants as beneficial insects, keeping ants as pets, the importance of identifying ants, how baiting works, and how to manage the ants thoughtfully and creatively in your urban landscape. On this Fresh Take episode we welcome Dr. Ram Balasubramanian and Dr. Stephen Forbes. Tune in to listen to our experts share about genetically modified mosquitoes scheduled to be released in Florida and Texas.Dr. Forbes, an expert in microbiology and genetics, holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Immunology and Infectious diseases track), while Dr. Balasubramanian holds degrees in Crop Sciences, Agricultural Engineering, and Ecological Agriculture. Learn what is a GMO mosquito and it's potential implication for Floridians. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the agency supervising the release of GMO mosquitoes into the Florida environment. The mosquitoes to be released by a third party are to be male mosquitoes, being female mosquitoes the ones needing blood to survive. The male GMO mosquitoes are to breed with female Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes (disease carrying mosquitoes) and produce nonviable offspring. Ideally, the female disease carrying mosquito population will be reduced. The environmental implications are still unknown. Dr. Balasubramanian shares his concern on the development of a drug resistant "super mosquito," and also touches the lack of information available to the general public. The panel of experts share natural and organic ways of controlling mosquito population. These tips and suggestions are non toxic and can be easily followed:Get rid of standing water: puddles, ponds, etc. mosquitoes need standing water to do natural life processes. Eliminate standing water and you might be able to reduce mosquito population around you.Coffee grounds: Dr. Balasubramanian shares how he has been using coffee grounds in his property to keep mosquitoes away.Citronella/ Lemongrass: widely used as a natural mosquito repellent. Want to grow and care for your own citronella? This article explains citronella basics. In Episode 16 from last fall the Two Wise Jawns predicted that Trump would win the 2016 presidential election due to an uprising of disgruntled white Americans feeling "identity-less" and a quiet subset of white Americans feeling a slow creep toward "minority" status. Sad!™ that our playful banter manifested into the socio-political clusterfcuk that has been 2017, but let's discuss. Now on the heels of the protests turned fatal riots at Charlottesville, VA, what does it all mean, this "Rise of a Nation" so to speak? What is #UniteTheRight and all of the factions under its umbrella? Why are they discontented? Should we care? Do they seem more emboldened or is the media granting the KKKBros, The Donald, Manosphere, etc.. sub-Reddits more visibility than necessary? We have our hot takes, share yours! This year the mosquitoes have used me as their personal pin cushion. I mean each time I go outside I am attacked. No matter what I use they always seem to find a spot on my body that hasn't been protected. A couple of weeks ago I was speaking with a neighbor.
