New Year, new podcast episode! What does your support system look like? How can you effectively support your partner and/or spouse in this challenging journey? This week we bring some amazing perspectives of what that looks like. Court reporting school (and even your first year of work) isn't easy to navigate alone and can be overwhelming even for those around us. We gathered your questions and sat down with the Steno Husband himself, Jose, to see what this adventure looks like on the other side of the machine. So grab your partner/significant other/family member and listen to our latest episode to .see what it's like supporting a member of the steno community. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steno-talk-podcast/support
At this year's 2022 NCRA convention in Orlando, Florida, the Steno Talk team sat down for our very first face-to-face interview with none other than Whitney Kumar! This episode is full of non-stop laughter, Judy Justice behind-the-scenes stories, and a couple of golden nuggets for both students and reporter! Most recognized as being Judge Judy's court reporter on Judy Justice, Whitney is a superstar both on and off camera. With a court reporting career spanning 15+ years, Whitney has enjoyed the freelance world, been an official reporting many high-profile cases, and started a successful court reporting firm, KW Reporting, with her twin sister Kamryn who is also a court reporter. Hope y'all enjoy this episode! We had so much fun recording it! Music: Hook Sounds: Past Moments --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steno-talk-podcast/support
Are you a student looking for a mentor, or a working reporter looking to give back to the steno community? On this episode of Steno Talk we finish interviewing Nicole Bulldis and McKalie Bellew as they shine some light on what it really means to be and have a mentor. It's so crucial for students to have a mentor and someone to lean on while on their court reporting journey. Keep in mind that mentors aren't just for students either! Think of all the things you'll be thrown into once you certify and how many questions you'll have, and why stop at one? Get all the mentors! How many times have you been asked when you're going to graduate or be out of school? Yeah, us too. We get it. It's so freaking hard guys! But, in this episode, we wanted to bring you all together and talk about what the court reporting school journey really looks like in the real world. Court reporting school is hard enough, especially when life happens. For those of you still on your court reporting school journey, we'll see you on the other side because you got this, and we're here for it no matter how long it takes. #ohmygodge #letsgetjudgejudyscourtreporter #tears5minutesin #onyourowntime Super Mario Effect - Ted Talk Music: Hook Sounds: Past Moments --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steno-talk-podcast/support
You all know who Allie is because we've had the pleasure of interviewing her before on Episode 10, but now we have one of her students Rose Detloff joining her this time to talk about her miraculous journey through school. Listen as we give Rose and Allie a Q&A on their thoughts on practice, mindset, and how to get through court reporting school. This lady sought out Allie Hall and excelled through her program and certified at light speed. Right out of theory (while finishing a bachelor's degree and working) and into speed building, she was already testing at 180/200wpm tests. And she didn't stop there folks. She went right for the RPR and all under 12 months. #alliehall #alliechallengedusall #rosegetsoutted #rosedetloff #theorytoRPRinlessthanayear #mindsetandhardwork Find Rose's practice routine here! https://www.facebook.com/groups/ECRSgroup/permalink/10157946549330689 Questions for Rose and Allie: https://www.instagram.com/stenorose/ https://www.facebook.com/allie.m.hall.1 Music: Hook Sounds: Past Moments --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steno-talk-podcast/support
We had so much to talk about that we couldn't fit it all into one episode! Our interview was such a huge part of our last episode that we made a bonus with more talking points, questions, advice.... EVERYTHING! Stay tuned until the end of our episode to learn how to win a piece of merchandise from our store for those of you going to convention! We can't wait to see you.
Should reporters be seen and not heard? Should we be as quiet as a potted plant in the corner of the room?! Does the thought of interrupting leave you shaking in your boots (or heels?) In this episode, we dive right into why interrupting leaves us with this fear, and how we can combat it. We talk about what causes it, and how to gain the breath and the confidence to use our voices and speak up “FOR THE RECORD.” But what about audio? What about that attorney with that look on his/her face? The answers are simple and straightforward and yet, it's a huge struggle for a working reporter. And students? Do they even talk about interrupting in school? Heck no! This is a topic that is connected with so many other things and we got the queen of speaking up for the record for y'all. Obviously, Steno Talk has been going through some changes, so let us bring you up to speed! If you haven't seen us on social media (then you need to follow usssss....), you may not know that we're losing one of our own, Katie Morfin, to pursue her Thrive course and to take care of her mentees; we're so proud of her! She's doing great things for this profession and its students, folks. That being said, we introduce a new (not-so) co-host from behind the curtain... CANDICE! You'll learn a little bit about our producer, now co-host, on this episode of Season 2, and we'll talk about some of the ideas we have for future episodes that we'd love for you to weigh in on. How many episodes could we take up talking about theory? Probably a million, but this episode covers a lot of the common questions we get about theory and which one is the best/worst and everything in between. The truth is there is no "right answer" here and that learning and using a theory that makes the most sense to you is the best choice. Theory envy is real, but oftentimes this will slow you down when you're already frustrated with building speed for certification, but master what you know! This is key! You can add to what you've mastered, but we're already overloading ourselves with a lot of information, so keep that in mind. A lot of people will tell you not to compare yourself to others, and the same applies here; make lemonade, and don't think that your theory is so flawed that you embark on learning another one before you've mastered your own. In this episode, we talk about everything "theory," and there's so much to gain for anyone still learning their theory (which is everyone, right?!) Always remember why you started and how far you've come. DO. NOT. MISS. US. AT. CONVENTION! We'll be there. Please come talk to us.
Join us as we talk with Janet about honing in on your goals, removing distractions and toxicity, and staying focused. We've talked about networking and social media, but we touch a bit on professionalism and how to balance those aspects of social media in the professional world. Even as a student you should be thinking about your online presence and make sure you're thinking about what you're showing the world about who you are. You never know who you might be working for one day! Janet also gives some insight into her practice method and her journey to become a reporter. Janets Practice Method: Warm up with 20wpm+ your target speed. Then go up 40wpm+ for 2 minutes, and then come back down -20wpm and try to write it perfectly. Write it again. Print it. Highlight areas you need to focus on. Underline your phrases. Take a microscope to it and write your briefs and strokes that you're missing. Practice those briefs for 2-3 minutes, and then keep doing that for 30 minutes. If you're really into it, you can push for an hour. This should be your practice for the week, and by the end of the week when you've heard that take all week, focus on passing your tests at the end of the week. This is a “practice to perfection” method. So why does Anna have sweaty pits this time? Networking is hard. It could give any one of us sweaty pits. Let us take the pressure off and give you some tips for networking and setting yourself apart in this field, and guess what? This applies to both reporters and more importantly students! You guys can and should be networking too! Attend the things. Meet the people. Talk about your goals. Make your own business cards. This will be your career, folks. You want people to remember and notice you, especially at an event like a convention. Also, lean heavily on your local and national associations! Sit down with us as we chat with the infamous Allie Hall about all those letters behind her name! If you haven't heard of Allie... this woman is a legend and it was such a pleasure picking her brain about everything (and then some.) She's had so many struggles through court reporting school and she conquered them all. If you're looking for some grit and determination... Allie Hall IS grit and determination. She literally can.do.anything. Nothing can keep her down, and she can somehow be completely calm, cool, and collected while kicking court reporting's ass. You will NOT want to miss this advice from an AMAZING one-of-a-kind and accomplished reporter. She even makes Anna cry (twice!) On our topic of social media: ANNA WHY DO YOU POST SO MUCH?! But really, this is something where you essentially put in you want to get out of it. Use it to your advantage, carve out a space for yourself, and don't be scared! Put yourself out there and talk to other reporters and students. Surround yourself with the people you want to surround yourself with in real life. These are the times. But also, be aware of what you post and who you're posting it to because everyone is watching. You're in control of the content you put out. Tailer your feed to where you want to go, and instead of it being a time-suck, it'll help keep you on track. MAKE IT SERVE YOU AND YOUR GOALS! Court reporting is such a lonely study while you're going through school. In this episode, we talk about how special and crucial mentors are, and they don't go away as soon as you graduate or are done with school. They'll be with you even after you certify, even after you start working! You'll have so many questions in and out of school and sometimes the answers feel out of reach, so having a mentor is such a great resource and can do wonders for support and motivation. Even if you aren't certified or done with school, don't forget that you can have something to offer students too. YOU can be a mentor! Put yourself out there. Burn out means you're done, right? DONE! Wrong. Burn out means you're working hard, maybe even too hard, but you've got to change things up. I'll quote Einstein here. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results” Talk to your instructor. Have them talk to you about what a reasonable goal is. Voice your frustrations. Constructive feedback might be hard to hear, but if you're in burn out you have to stop and reevaluate and make.some.changes. Reach out to your mentors, and your friends. There are so many of us who understand the struggle, and if you feel like you have no one… you have US. Please reach out to us on Facebook, Instagram, E-mail… ANYTHING! We're here. We understand. Make sure you're taking care of YOURSELF and you're not just working yourself to the bone. Balance is key. Plan at least one activity you can do just for yourself that isn't “work.” PLAN. IT. DO. IT. What's new with Steno Talk? We've been busy studying for written exams, and taking depositions over Zoom for the first time! So much can happen during a depo; you can have to interrupt either/both parties, you can lose audio, you have to swear everybody in, and you have to maintain the record. It's all quite a bit to take in. The bulk of the episode will go over speed building and the many ways to go about it and what worked for us. We talk about progressing and not progressing, changing theories, study patterns, taking speed tests, and what it takes to build speed. Being. "stuck." is. not. bad. (Say that again.) We all have a full life to live that includes children, relationships, and work, so, we'll talk about how we've managed to make the adjustments needed to make progress. Even if you do end up taking a break, quitting, coming back, whatever... you can gain a ton of inspiration from this episode!
