I spoke to Nick Srnicek, author of 'Platform Capitalism', 'Inventing the Future' and the 'MANIFESTO FOR AN ACCELERATIONIST POLITICS'. Together we dissect the roots of accelerationist politics of which Nick is known for his work on left accelerationism, its controversial implications, and its ongoing interpretation. We discuss why he doesn't like the term accelerationist anymore, the trend of many people in crypto world identifying as accelerationists without knowing what it means, and the fight for freedom from work. We also talk about his latest book 'After Work: A History of the Home and the Fight for Free Time' which he co-wrote with his partner Helen Hester.Big thank you to Dallas Taylor for helping edit this episode! If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. "By returning to the original tale of Narcissus, and the flower from which he takes his name, this book offers an alternative reading of narcissism..." Is their such a thing as healthy Narcissism? We chat with the author of 'Narcissus in Bloom - An Alternative History of the Selfie' about how the finger waving moralism surrounding 'selfies' requires further thought: If Narcissism is the defining pathology of the twenty-first century, what if rather than it being about self-obsession, it's an attempt at self-transformation? We discuss Freud's idea of finding others narcissism attractive, attempts to capture the ever changing self, politicians being authentically & consistently awful, the bourgeois gaze, 'whatever beings' and the feeling of 'what comes next' vs 'nothing comes next'. Matt also discusses the forgotten alternative versions of the Narcissus myth and what this reveals about self-transformation and renewal. I wrote an essay on John and Barbara Ehrenreich's concept of the PMC, and how it relates to Mark Fisher's concept of the Vampire Castle, which I read in this episode. You'll hear the full version of the essay, but a shortened version will be included in a book titled Underground Theory, which will be available at Amazon to order a print copy September 4. The link is below. I'm proud to say that this essay will be included with essays by some smart and controversial thinkers including Žižek, Norman Finkelstein, Alenka Zupančič, Todd McGowan, Catherine Liu, Chris Cutrone, Daniel Tutt and Michael Downs of the Dangerous Maybe blog. In my essay I argue Mark Fisher makes the same mistake many Marxists have made. They conflate the petite bourgeoisie with the professional managerial class. This is an understandable mistake, but it is time for Marxists to begin using the Ehrenreich's definition of the professional managerial class in their class analysis. At another time I will quibble further with the Ehrenreichs. I think they make a few mistakes, but on the whole I think they have brought a tremendous improvement to the discipline of class analysis. The future of the socialist struggle must account for the distinctions between the petite bourgeoisie and the professional managerial class. Robert T. Tally, Jr.'s book For a Ruthless Critique of All That Exists: Literature in an Age of Capitalist Realism (Zero Books, 2022) takes as its point of departure two profound and interrelated phenomena. The first is the pervasive sense of what Mark Fisher had called “capitalist realism", in which (to cite the famous expression variously attributed to Fredric Jameson and Slavoj Žižek) it is easier to imagine the end of the world than then end of capitalism. As Jameson in particular has noted, “perhaps this is due to some weakness in our imaginations,” and the attenuation of the imaginative function in cultural criticism has far-reaching implications for the organization and reformation of institutions more generally. This manifests itself as a waning of speculative or theoretical energy, which in turn leads to a general capitulation to the tyranny of “what is,” the actually existing state of affairs, and the preemptive disavowal of alternative possibilities. Connected to this is the second phenomenon: the prevalent tendency in literary and cultural criticism over the past 30 or more years to eschew critical theory and even critique itself, while championing approaches to cultural study that emphasize surface reading, thin description, ordinary language philosophy, object-oriented ontology, and post-critique. Together these forms of anticritical and antitheoretical criticism have constituted a tendency that has in its various incarnations come to dominate the humanities and other areas of higher education in recent years. The latter has served to reinforce the former, and the result has been to align literary and cultural criticism with the broad-based forces of neoliberalism whose influence has so deleteriously transformed not only higher education but the whole of society at large. Robert T. Tally Jr. argues that, in order to counter these trends and empower the imagination, the time is ripe for “a ruthless critique of all that exists,” to borrow a phrase from the young Marx. This book is intended as a provocation, at once a polemic and a call to action for cultural critics Robert T. In this episode I spoke to David Z Morris, Chief Insights columnist at Coindesk who wrote a really nice book review of Block Radicals and creator of the Crypto Crooks podcast. David's been following the crypto space since near the beginning when he reported on the gold bug community's interest in bitcoin a decade ago. He is also the author of a book called Bitcoin is Magic.During the discussion we talk about how the crypto space has evolved with the rise of venture capital, the insanity of the last crypto bubble, and socialist finance. One of the main things we conclude is that most of these big finance and VC think boi influencers are not nearly as smart as people think. In fact, if you're a listener of the podcast, you're probably smarter than them and less detached from reality.Big thank you to Dallas Taylor for helping edit this episode! If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. In this episode I spoke to Eric Annan, founder of Aya, a startup in Africa trying to bring more Africans into the crypto space I met while at Zuzalu. We had some very interesting conversations together while there and I thought he would be great to have on the show to discuss crypto from one African perspective. During the discussion we spoke about the realities of crypto in Africa, the potential of blockchain for pan-Africanism, and "the Communism of Ubuntu" embedded in Africa's communal culture. But amidst teacher recruitment shortfall, waves of teacher strikes, a disillusioned workforce, and a rising sense of educational authoritarianism, we might wonder whether the teacher can enjoy “being” a teacher. Did they ever, and what sorts of enjoyment are to be found? "It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism," say Frederic Jameson and Slavoj Žižek.Capitalist liberal democracy is construed as the "end of history"—the culmination of millennia of civilizational progress, the inevitable outcome of a long march toward justice and freedom. But is it? And if it's not the best system for our economic and political needs, what is the alternative? It's almost impossible to imagine. But, despite what Margaret Thatcher said, there is an alternative—many, in fact. We just haven't dreamed them up yet. This is the argument of Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism, a great little book that wrestles with big questions and ends on a surprisingly hopeful note. In this episode, I'll share some reflections on our identities as consumers and the nature of capitalist realism. Then, you'll hear the latest episode of the Books Applied Podcast with Iggy Perillo. Iggy and I discussed the book for her podcast and I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with you, too!Footnotes: Iggy Perillo and WSL Leadership Books Applied Podcast Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher "Media Frames UPS Strike as Harming You, the Consumer and Protagonist of Reality" by Adam Johnson in The Column As always, you can find my opening essay, plus a condensed transcript of my conversation with Iggy, at whatworks.fyiLove What Works? James Smith's recent essay in Sublation Magazine "Capitalist Realism All Over Again" was very popular at Sublation Magazine. It begins with these lines:Such is the whiplash of the left's fortunes in the almost a decade and a half since Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism, that many of us are already onto our second ‘reappraisal' of the great book. In this special edition of Everyday Analysis Alfie Bown discusses how the concept of Capitalist Realism applies today.

We'll discuss the profit-investment puzzle and how globalization, digitization, and financialization have affected investments. We'll also touch on the Third Worldist view and its adaptation to the current state of affairs. Furthermore, we explore the stagnation of technology and its impact on capitalism, contrasting the views of Mark Fisher, David Graeber, and Tyler Cohen. In this thought-provoking episode, we'll assess the implications of AI in labor-saving, art, and video games, as well as the hidden monopolies of tech capital. We'll also ponder the Marxist approach to capitalism and its potential for both progressive and regressive arguments. This is a long-running series we are doing on understanding social technologies, relationships of production, and how we get here: i.e. what is the social and class history of the past. In this episode, we discuss Evgeny Morozov's "Critique of Techno-Feudal Reason." We specifically focus on the revisions to Marxist theoretical development that enables the thesis.Ready to challenge your perception of capitalism and neo-feudalism? Be prepared as we venture into the heart of Eugenia Morozov's critique of neo-feudal reason. Together, we'll grapple with the intricate workings of rents and fictitious capital as outlined in Cedric Durant's Fictitious Capital, turning the trope of predatory financial capital on its head. We'll also navigate the political landscape shaped by the dichotomy between China's industrial capital and the West's financial capital. Fasten your seatbelts as we confront the profit investment puzzle and the stagnation of capitalism and technological innovation. We'll delve into the impact of monopolization, financialization, globalization, and digitization on firms and the rise of monopsony pricing. You'll be fascinated as we demystify the stagnation in computer technology, employing examples like Air Force One and the iPhone. And if you're starved for intellectual stimulation, you're in for a treat as we discuss the works of thinkers like David Graber, Mark Fisher, Tyler Cohen, and Rausoff.Still with us? Good, because we're not done yet. Let's roll up our sleeves and get into the nitty-gritty of Marxist theory. From the wisdom of tradition and epistolic succession to the alienation of labour and the fetishization of commodities, we're going deep. We'll question the true meaning of being a Marxist, examining the tendency of inverting liberal shibboleths to break away from that. A final word of caution: this episode might just make you question everything you thought you knew about capitalism and neo-feudalism. Ethan is one of the co-founders of Cosmos and works at Informal Systems, a workers cooperative that focuses on building Cosmos infrastructure with Tomaž. A big theme of the Collaborative Finance event was about the paper Tomaž co-wrote while working with Sardex about multilateral trade clearing setoffs, or giving the ability of credit clearing to everyone rather than it being just something banks get to do. During the interview we spoke about what happened at the event, the political implications of giving credit clearing to everyone, and how this type of system could be implemented in Cosmos. If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform.
