Grab your blade or battle axe, and join Aaron & guest host Chris Wolford as they go "berserker" and pillage the plot of Robert Eggers' third feature-length film, The Northman. This epically sweeping Nordic revenge saga combines Viking mythology with Viking reality, culminating in a volcanic eruption of red-hot Viking vengeance and a valkyrie wail.  Hypnotic, hallucinatory, stunningly Shakespearean, and utterly badass, the film takes Eggers' unique true-to-period aesthetic to expensive new heights and channels the likes of Conan The Barbarian, Aguirre The Wrath Of God, Hamlet, MacBeth, and Andrei Rublev into a satisfying Viking quest for that great mead hall in the sky.  This is one bloodletting you won't wanna miss out on! The Trinity is one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith. Jesus ultimate agenda was coming to humanity to reveal what God is actually like. We have come to understand God as three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—yet one God. We use metaphors and language to describe God, but our theology can never fully contain God. Various metaphors have been used to explain God as ‘Trinity' but they often miss the mark, failing to grasp the mystery of divine love. In this sermon David Armstrong uses two images that help us grasp the mystery of God's nature as seamless, dynamic, interwoven community of love that sits at the centre of all things — the triune in their fellowship of divine love — and the invitation to us to participate in that love and allow it to shape who we are.Note: Episode Artwork is one of the most famous icons in history written by Andrei Rublev, a Russian monk and iconographer it 1425. It is entitled ‘The Hospitality of Abraham', but more commonly known as ‘Troitsa' - Russian for Triune or Trinity.

This encourages us to consider the honor we invest in people and in God. News that Putin was ordering the handover of Russia's most famous icon and work of art, Andrei Rublev's 15th-century "Trinity," from the State Tretyakov Gallery to the Russian Orthodox Church, reminds Pastor Andrew of Andrei Tarkovsky's film "Andrei Rublev," which, he posits, might be a fascinating portal for the west to look into the dark soul of Russia.

Jackie and Greg fail to brush up on their medieval Russian history before digging into Andrei Tarkovsky's sprawling epic about the titular 15th century icon painter, ANDREI RUBLEV from 1966. Topics of discussion include the film's episodic structure, its withholding of the artist's work until the end, Tarkovsky's complicated relationship with horses, where it ranks in his filmography, and whether they think Rublev died a virgin.#27 on Sight & Sound's 2012 "The 100 Greatest Films of All Time" list.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/polls/greatest-films-all-time-2012#67 on Sight & Sound's 2022 "The 100 Greatest Films of All Time" list.  bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-timeCheck us out on Instagram: instagram.com/sceneandheardpodCheck us out at our official website: sceneandheardpod.comJoin our weekly film club: instagram.com/arroyofilmclubJP Instagram/Twitter: jacpostajGK Instagram: gkleinschmidtPhotography: Matt AraquistainMusic: Andrew CoxGet in touch at hello@sceneandheardpod.comSupport the show on Patreon: patreon.com/SceneandHeardPodorSubscribe just to get access to our bonus episodes: buzzsprout.com/1905508/subscribe

Lost in Criterion is 10 years old! Does that make us the longest running Criterion podcast? Who cares. We started this podcast as an excuse to talk after Pat moved to Japan. While Pat and I were far from cinephiles, we enjoyed the conversations we'd have leaving the cinema after a movie, and wanted to continue having those talks even though we weren't going to the same cinema anymore. So we, pretty arbitrarily to be honest, picked a list of movies to talk about, and happened to pick one that now grows faster than we release episodes. We will never be done! So look forward to more decade anniversaries in the future! To celebrate this anniversary, we decided to revisit one of the first 100 films we talked about. This is a redemption thing. While we moved to podbean so that our entire catalogue of episodes would be more easily available, we do not recommend the first 100 (or more!). They're rough. They're evidence of two idiots getting film education by fire. I like to think we've gotten better over the years, but our iTunes reviews disagree. So Pat and I made a list of films we particularly wanted to revisit from those first 100 Criterion Spines. Over the last few weeks, our Patreon supporters have voted on which film they'd like to hear us re-examine. The winner is a movie I loved, but was only going to watch again if I was forced to because it is so long. Andrei Rublev (1966) is the first Andrei Tarkovsky film Pat and I saw and we were not prepared. The original episode finds Pat calling everything but the bell making sequence "boring" and "confusing" and me finding the film hard to defend because I liked it on vibes alone. Have our opinions changed? Well, they'd have to have, but you'll have to listen to this episode to be sure. Thanks to everyone who voted! Thanks to everyone who's listened to and supported us over the years! Maybe someday we'll be done!

This week, the guys at 1001 by 1 do a deep dive into his second feature film – a film that is both massive & epic and yet somehow also introspective: “Andrei Rublev”. During the episode, Adam and Ian discuss the Criterion Collection restoration of the film, Tarkovsky's vision of the film (even before they started shooting, and how Rublev functions as a character in the movie even when he is not the focus. Also, this week Adam recommends the ESPN documentary series “The Last Dance” and Ian recommends the HBO show “Barry”.

Catholic art historian Elizabeth Lev returns to Criteria to discuss two films about Michelangelo. The Agony and The Ecstasy (1965), directed by Carol Reed and starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Rex Harrison as Pope Julius II, is what Italians call an "Americanata" - an unapologetically bombastic, colorful Hollywood transformation of Italian or Roman history. It focuses on the conflict and collaboration between Michelangelo and his papal patron in the project of painting the Sistine Chapel. Sin (2019), directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, gives us a gritty, filthy Renaissance Florence and Rome and a Michelangelo who is something like a lovable hobo, outstandingly performed by Alberto Testone. Sin takes place in the fallow period of Michelangelo's career immediately after he painted the Sistine ceiling, in which his work was stalled by the conflict between his two patrons, the Della Rovere and Medici families. Rather than showing Michelangelo making art, it shows his spiritual and economic struggles during this period. As hesitant as the title Sin might make us, Elizabeth Lev praises it for correctly identifying avarice and pride as Michelangelo's sins, rather than focusing on the question of his sexuality as many do today. (Though the film is not free of sexual content involving other characters.) Fifty years ago, Konchalovsky co-wrote the greatest film about an artist: Andrei Rublev (directed by Andrei Tarkovsky). He identifies Sin as a continuation of the themes of Rublev. Indeed, both of these films about Michelangelo share with Rublev the tension between artistic/religious integrity and working for patrons who may be commissioning religious works for worldly motives. Saint Andrei Rublev lived in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, and is celebrated as Russia's greatest iconographer. Not much is known about his life, so in this episode we will contemplate and discuss his most important icon: the icon of the Holy Trinity. This icon depicts the three angelic visitors that Abraham hosts in Genesis 18, but it really points to the true nature of the trinitarian God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This is a crossover episode with the Second Decade podcast. After partying in the future (or what was the future) in the last episode, Sean and Cody journey to the past, exchanging their grunge duds for waistcoats and cravats as they invade Russia in 1812. In War & Peace, the BBC television miniseries from 2016, Russian trust fund baby Pierre Bezhukov (Paul Dano) is so distracted with the long walks he takes to find himself that he stumbles onto the largest battlefield of the entire Napoleonic Wars. After someone leaves the iron on and reduces Moscow to ashes, Pierre straggles through the snow to find his way back into the Regency-era melodrama where his bae Natasha (Lily James) finds herself unexpectedly single. Environmental issues discussed include the Russians' campaign of ecological warfare against Napoleon, the true responsibility for the Great Fire of Moscow, and Leo Tolstoy's own brand of Christian anarchist environmentalism. How was Napoleon's invasion of Russia destined to be won or lost on environmental factors? Who really burnt Moscow and did they do it deliberately? Was Bonaparte a military genius or was he doomed to get his hots stomped in Russia? What kind of person would copy the entirety of War and Peace in longhand six times? How long is War and Peace, exactly, and why is it wrong to answer this question in terms of page numbers? Was Tolstoy an environmentalist? Has anyone ever done his masterpiece novel justice on the screen? Who was Andrei Rublev and why did the Soviets want to make a movie about him? All these questions and more are retreating from the field in a long shivering column for our inspection in this well-costumed episode of Green Screen.
