What if everything we've been taught about mourning is completely archaic? In this deeply emotional and beautifully raw episode, Heather sits down with her lifelong friend, Kate Doerge—a certified grief coach, motivational speaker, author, and nonprofit founder. After tragically losing her 16-year-old daughter, Penny, to Neurofibromatosis (NF1) in 2022, Kate and her family made a radical choice: they chose to feed their faith, starve their fear, and throw out the traditional mold of dark, sorrowful mourning. Instead, they chose to flood their lives with love, light, and celebration. In this episode, Heather and Kate dive deep into: Redefining Grief: Why choosing joy after a devastating loss isn't a betrayal to your loved one—it's the ultimate tribute. The Story of Penny's Flight: How Penny lived more in her 16 years than most do in a hundred, and how her legacy is fueling a revolution to find a cure for NF. Shifting the Rhetoric: Better ways to show up for grieving friends instead of just saying "I'm so sorry" or "I can't imagine." Lifespan vs. Wingspan: Embracing the truth that some souls are meant to come into this world fast and furious, leaving an impact that transcends time. "We are all going to hit the mat in life. It's all about how we decide to get back up." Grab a box of tissues, lean into your intuition, and join Heather and Kate for a groundbreaking conversation on navigating Earth University, finding your flow through the darkest waters, and learning how to love our people differently once they've passed to the other side. Kate's new book, Reimagining Grief: Finding a New Path to Healing, Strength, and Joy After Loss, is available everywhere books and audiobooks are sold. Send us Fan MailA championship career can disappear in a split second. What happens next is the part nobody trains you for. We sit down with Stefy, an Italian-born motocross world champion who wins three world titles, races against men on some of the biggest stages, and then faces a devastating injury that ends her time as a pro athlete. She shares what it feels like when your identity has been built around racing, how family support helps pull you out of the darkest stretch, and why stubborn belief can be a tool, not just a personality trait. Then the story turns forward. Stefy explains why she founded Init eSports and how sim racing and eSports can create a more affordable motorsport pathway for women, young drivers, and underrepresented talent. We talk visibility through streaming and Roku broadcasts, building a women-only safe community on Discord, and the surprising number of participants who discover they're drawn to engineering, data, and team roles, not only driving. She also breaks down SIM for STEM, an education program that uses motorsport telemetry and experiential learning to make math feel real in schools, with a clear standard: programs should be at least 50% girls. If you care about women in motorsports, sim racing, STEM education, and practical ways to widen access without lowering the bar, this conversation offers a blueprint and a challenge. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde sits down with Peter Norris to explore a story that challenges assumptions about identity, leadership and what is actually possible. Peter grew up in an environment where crime was normalised. His father was one of Australia’s most wanted bank robbers, his brother followed a similar path, and by the age of six, Peter was already involved in break-ins. At thirteen, he made a decision that changed the direction of his life. This conversation explores that moment, the choices that followed, and what it takes to step away from what feels inevitable. It also moves into leadership, where Peter now leads a multimillion-dollar hospitality group with a clear philosophy built on courage and kindness. In this episode, you’ll hear: The defining decision that changed Peter’s trajectory How environment shapes belief and what becomes possible Why small, consistent choices matter more than big moments The tension between loyalty, identity and personal responsibility How to lead with both courage and kindness in today’s workplace The role of belief in shaping performance and culture This is a conversation about choice, ownership and leadership. It challenges the idea that your past determines your future, and reinforces the impact of the decisions you make over time. Brain Talk | Being Patient for Alzheimer's & dementia patients & caregivers
Dr. Michael Fossel, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist and recognized expert in aging and telomere biology. He serves as chairman of the board of Telocyte, a biotech company developing telomerase therapy for Alzheimer's disease, with FDA-sponsored human trials planned to target the underlying disease process. Fossel has authored more than 100 scientific publications and has lectured internationally, including at the National Institutes of Health. His work explores how processes like cell senescence — when aging cells stop working properly and can contribute to chronic inflammation — may help drive age-related diseases, including Alzheimer's.In the interview with Being Patient Founder Deborah Kan, Fossel argues that aging is not simply wear and tear, but a breakdown in the body's ability to maintain and repair cells over time. He explains why lifestyle habits may help slow aging but are unlikely to reset it and outlines why his research is focused on whether telomerase therapy could restore cellular function in Alzheimer's. He acknowledges that the science is still in its early stages, with major questions remaining about how much damage can be reversed, which patients might benefit most, and how soon these ideas can be tested in people.----If you loved listening to this Live Talk, visit our website to find more of our Alzheimer's coverage and subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.beingpatient.com/Follow Being Patient: Twitter: / being_patient_ Instagram: / beingpatientvoices Facebook: / beingpatientalzheimers LinkedIn: / being-patient Being Patient is an editorially independent journalism outlet for news and reporting about brain health, cognitive science, and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Kibby reflects on the importance of setting intentions, embracing vulnerability, and trusting the body's innate ability to heal. Of course, as the field of psychiatry and clinical psychology are excited about the new treatment options- Dr. Kibby also discusses the need for caution. It's important to only engage in treatments that are legal, safe, regulated, evidence-based and monitored by careful medical supervision.
