Being masterful with our time doesn't happen without planning and deliberate actions. We must plan for what we want to happen, and we have to make space for what we want to happen. We think about the actions we need to take and the resources, but we fail to consider the space we need to allow our dreams to grow, to become real, and to become our truth.Getting to know what's truly important to you and connecting with your values is central to not only manifesting your dreams but creating a life experience that you enjoy. We must decide which of our many ideas is the most important. We all have a difficult time deciding! But if we stick with one idea long enough, spend some time with it, ask it what it needs, and then give it the space and resources it needs to grow – it can bloom! To truly live a life where you've mastered your time, you need to start with creating space. You have to deliberately create blocks of time that are open, so that you can let your ideas grow into them. You need space to catch up on the backlog of crap that was forgotten last week, space to fill back up your tank with creative action, space to connect with loved ones and to get inspired. And you need space to have the option to follow through and act on your next great idea.Without leaving space for all of this, none of it can happen. So it's one of those paradoxes that in order to get a lot done, you need to leave space – emptiness – for it to manifest.Being masterful with your time means being deliberate about what you make time for. It means being ruthless with what you release yourself from. It takes courage. And it is so worth it! There are two elements to self-improvement, overall. There's the learning of the philosophy itself, and then there's the application of it. vI know this is very hard for people to hear… but it's not as simple as just learning something new and then your life gets better! Learning something is the first step. It's a crucial step. But it's not going to give you positive results in the long term. What does do that is the application of these principles into daily life. But how do we do that, practically speaking? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#122 - In this episode, I share tips and strategies I learned to create long-term habits. Habits can be very difficult to create, but not impossible.  You don't have to be a super disciplined and motivated person to create better habits either. You can go from procrastinating to becoming very productive. It's just about focusing on the right activities and forming habits in a way that will help you stick to them long-term.   What I share: Understanding the 80/20 rule and how you can use it My favorite habit book Atomic Habits by James Clear Hope you enjoy this episode!  Don't forget to rate and follow! We all have habits in our life, both good and bad. In the words of today's guest, “Our habits don't change God's love for us, but God's love for us should change our habits.” Today I'm talking with Justin Whitmel Earley, a lawyer, speaker, and author of both Habits of Household and The Common Rule, and he knows a thing or two about creating habits. When it comes to our own life, intentional habits help form our heart towards the things that are most important. When it comes to our family, intentional habits communicate to our family what they should value and how they should spend their time. As you likely know, intentionality in our lives doesn't have to happen through “big” things; instead, a life of intentionality is formed by how we approach ordinary, every-day moments like mealtimes, bedtimes, and discipline. Today, Justin and I talk about how he has recovered from a distracted life, why it's so hard for us to slow down today, how to form and stick with new habits, and so much more. I loved our conversation and I can't wait to share it with you!

This podcast episode is brought to by our host, Jack Moylan, and Lutz Consulting Shareholder, Susie Krause. In this episode, you will learn about habits and how they can help you be a successful leader! The conversation helps answer the following questions: What habits do you have that you believe help you to be a good leader? Have you always had them, or how did you form them? Have you been able to refine/develop them over your career? How? What habits have you seen other successful leaders possess? Any tips/resources to help young professionals form/manage good leadership habits?

There is a Method to the Madness

When you want to change a behavior forming new habits will be the key. Is your habit checking your phone when you first wake up? If so, can you imagine if your habit was jogging a mile instead? What would change? The little things aren't little things. Form new habits and things will change.  If nothing changes, nothing changes. Darren Johnson is Chief Operating Officer in Listed Equities and Executive Director at Impax Asset Management, where he is responsible for Global Operations, including Portfolio Services, Technology, Change/Project Management and Client Onboarding. He previously worked in a series of accounting and operations roles.  Our conversation starts with his upbringing in South London and why he was born with a “silver spoon in his mouth”. We talk about the unlikely role model that emerged for him even at a very young age and how that character sowed the seeds for a career in the corporate world.  We turn then to his education and early career and reflect on the lack of empowerment that young professionals sometimes have and how this can deter engagement and motivation. We examine his career path, and the individuals who made it possible, as well as the choices made throughout that path.  In particular we look at the evolution of the asset management firm of today, and how remote working has changed it as well as the changes yet to come, which may shape the power centers of asset managers.  We also discuss the dramatic impact that ESG integration will have and the effect of regulation in this area. In our reflection section we look at how the investment industry and the practice of "mining for talent" can be compared to football (soccer) and the need to look outside the academy for talent.  We reflect on the importance of making excellence a habit and the wisdom of The Four Agreements, which are: don't take things personally, don't make assumptions, always try your best and be impeccable with your word.  Darren was the source for many guests on this podcast series as well as the Diverse Founders and VC series.  He is an active participant on the conference circuit as well as industry affinity groups designed to address low levels of diversity in finance. Series 4 is brought to you with the kind support of Federated Hermes, Inc., a leading global investment manager. Guided by their conviction that responsible investing is the best way to create wealth over the long term, their investment solutions span equity, fixed-income, alternative/private markets, multi-asset and liquidity strategies and a range of separately managed accounts, distributed through intermediaries worldwide.
