In this Paramount 1946 episode we look at two movies featuring Veronica Lake which otherwise could not be more dissimilar: Miss Susie Slagle's (directed by John Berry), about the trials of pre-WWI Johns Hopkins medical students living in a boarding house presided over by Lillian Gish; and famous Lake/Ladd noir outing, The Blue Dahlia (directed by George Marshall and written by Raymond Chandler). We discuss the potential influence of the leftists involved in making Miss Susie Slagle's on its portrayal of race and gender and debate the amount of damage done to The Blue Dahlia by the studio-mandated change to the plot. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we take a brief look at three very different movies: Tarkovsky's Nostalghia (stolen by a German Shepherd), Joseph L. Mankiewicz's A Letter to Three Wives (stolen by Linda Darnell), and Douglas Sirk's All I Desire (starring Barbara Stanwyck).  Time Codes: 0h 00m 35s:      MISS SUSIE SLAGLE'S [dir. Alex in questo episodio parla di come ‘Nostalghia' di Tarkovsky (1983) le abbia ricordato della sua di nostalgia e ha deciso di affrontare questo tema, senza davvero consigli di come affrontarla. The son of a prominent Russian poet, Tarkovsky studied filmmaking at the All-Union State Cinematography Institute and graduated in 1960. His diploma work, Katok i skripka (1960; The Steamroller and the Violin), won a prize at the New York Film Festival, and his first full-length feature film, Ivanovo detstvo (1962; Ivan's Childhood), about the experiences of an orphaned boy on the Russian front during World War II, established his international reputation. His next film, Andrey Rublyov (1965), the story of a medieval Russian icon painter, was acclaimed as a masterpiece for its vivid evocation of the Middle Ages. His subsequent films included Solyaris (1971; Solaris), Zerkalo(1975; A Mirror), and Stalker (1979).Tarkovsky's films were notable for their striking visual images, their symbolic, visionary tone, and their paucity of conventional plot and dramatic structure. Several of his films were barred from domestic distribution by the Soviet authorities, and in 1984 Tarkovsky decided to remain in the West after having filmed Nostalghia (1983; Nostalgia) in Italy. His last motion picture, also made in western Europe, was The Sacrifice (1986).From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Andrey-Arsenyevich-Tarkovsky. For more information about Andrei Tarkovsky:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:George Prochnik about Tarkovsky, at 07:30: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-162-george-prochnik“The Drenching Richness of Andrei Tarkovsky”: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/02/15/the-drenching-richness-of-andrei-tarkovsky“Tarkovsky on Art”: https://youtu.be/V27XlEDLdtE

Tarkovsky and his films have been a major inspiration for me, and I share with you the story of his life, as well as exploring his philosophy on cinema as an art form through a series of speeches and writings taken from throughout his career. Tarkovsky viewed cinema as an art form that is as important to humanity as painting, poetry, music, and philosophy, and this is evident in his films as well as in the way he lived his life. In our final episode on Andrei Tarkovsky, we discuss the two films he directed after leaving the Soviet Union: Nostalghia (1983) and The Sacrifice (1986). Both films see a continued intensification of the directorial moves that Tarkovsky had been developing for his whole career: from heightened and ecstatic soundtracks to long and suspenseful shots; from close-ups of valuable objects in the mud to underdeveloped and over-emotional female characters. The films both draw heavily on the landscapes of Northern Italy and the island of Gotland in Sweden, which are rendered sublimely beautiful through Tarkovsky's unique blend of painterly compositions and disorientating surrealism. We hope you enjoyed this series on the films of Tarkovsky, next up we will be returning to architecture in the company of the inimitable Zaha Hadid!Edited by Matthew Lloyd Roberts. Pure poezie in beelden. Beeldrijmen. Spiritualiteit in film. Welcome to the 1% Better Podcast. My guest this week is Nostalghia.Nostalghia is an American Singer, Songwriter, Musician, and Poet. In 2014, she released her first full length album, Chrysalis, and from there she’s started to take the music world by storm. Her music was featured in both John Wick movies and she appears on stage performing in the second installment of the movie. Her following has been growing massively over the last few years and all this on an independent label. When we caught up a few weeks back, I was very keen to learn more about her as a person, as well as an artist. This was initially planned as an episode of 'The 864 podcast' (the other 15minute one I do) but we were only really getting started at that point so agreed to keep chatting. I'm very glad we did. We get deep into what motivates Nostalghia, what it means to be fully authentic, core values of control and freedom, what her identity is, how life can go in slow motion, and a whole lot more. As you will hear, it’s one of those listens that hooks you in and keeps you engaged for the full show. I know it did for me! We also touched on her new Album out this week called IMAGO. I have links to her site, music, where to purchase the album and more in the show notes. A full summary of what we talk about is below too. Handwritten love letters. A long conversation with a stranger on the subway. Strolling down the Boulevard gazing up at the autumn leaves. Getting lost. Happy accidents. This is a forgotten time…a forgotten place. The romance of tangible, human contact, the sentimental notion of not being tied to your phone, to your social media feed, to your avatar. Have we all forgotten how to be human? Have we forgotten the notion of Romance? Or is #romance just another hashtag, another Wikipedia entry, another google search, another Tinder swipe?
