Katya Mickelson and Laramie Dean
Hello Dear Listeners, We have missed you! To steal a term from one of our favorite authors (Christopher Moore) our day slave lives have been getting us down and keeping us from editing this podcast! But fear not, we are back with a Spooktober appropriate episode. This episode is a throw back to one of our collective favorite movies: 2015's The Witch (or The VVitch) by Robert Eggers. This period piece set in 1600s Puritan America has a little something for everyone. For the devoutly religious, Puritans, for the devoutly satanic, Satan, for the devoutly feminist, Witches. Robert Eggers develops a wonderful atmosphere in which to set this exploration of female power, religiously motivated paranoia, and the truly brutal nature of life 300 years ago. So join us as Katya and Laramie delve into feminism, the history of witches in America, why the woods are so scary, and also hyenas. We have just one question for you dear listeners... Wouldst thou like to live... deliciously? **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, We have been enjoying the wonderful summer weather and doing our best to keep cool! Hopefully you are enjoying the summer sun and staying safe from the things that go bump in the night. And, what makes summer better than a nice song or two? Well this week you are in for a musical treat! Katya and Laramie discuss the one and only Jerry Lee Lewis, AKA The Killer (really this is his nickname), and the many horrible things he has been accused of doing. If you haven't had a chance give Mr. Lewis a Google and bask in the 1960s terror that is his hairdo. So join us as we delve into why you should be afraid of Mr. Lewis and people like him. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, Summer is in full swing and we are releasing an episode that wasn't recorded this past winter! We hope this episode will keep you creeped out as you travel for your summer fun. Maybe you can bring us with as you visit a ghost town or check out a haunted house. This week Katya and Laramie discuss Stephen King's Salem's Lot, (specifically the 1979 TV miniseries directed by Tobe Hooper). Laramie discusses the horror of vampirism and why Salem's Lot shows us that the sexual appeal of vampires is scarier than anything. Katya and Laramie also discuss if the events of Salem's Lot could take place today and the terrifying parallels between vampirism and drug addiction. Also, Katya and Laramie discuss many of Laramie's wonderful works of art, what Katya has been up to these past several months, and why language matters so much in horror and life. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, We hope you are having a wonderful start to summer and enjoying the warmth and sun. Cookouts are a wonderful summer tradition and this week we decided to bring you an epicurean focused episode. Gilberto Valle, dubbed the "Cannibal Cop" is a former NYPD officer who was found guilty of conspiracy to commit kidnapping in 2013, and later had his conviction overturned in 2014. Gilberto's charges stemmed from his behavior in online chat rooms regarding fantasy writing involving the rape, murder, and cannibalization of numerous women. To say this case is complex is an understatement, but Katya and Laramie dig into what makes this such a scary situation. Also, Katya and Laramie struggle with New York geography, discuss diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5 and try to pin down where the line is between thought crimes and real crimes. So join us for some ups and downs on this wacky episode! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, If you haven't heard, we're back! The winter/grad school/moving blues got us down for a bit, but we are all sorted out and ready to go. We are bringing you some Christmas in June fun and festivities with this week's topic! Gremlins, released on June 8 1984 and directed by Joe Dante, is this week's topic. To say that this episode is near and dear to Laramie's heart is an understatement. Join us to find out why camp, creep, and consumerism make this the perfect holiday movie to binge watch on your DVR or VCR. Also, Katya drops some knowledge on the origin of the Mogwai name, and why colonialism may be the scariest part of the movie. We want to give a very special shout out to all of you that have stuck with us though the break in this fun little project. We'll do better to keep the creepy goofiness coming your way! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
We're back bitches! Sorry for our long hiatus. If you are curious about what's been happening in our lives give this bumper a quick listen. We've got a new episode for you tonight too! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, Happy New Year, and sorry for the long delay. As many of you know, a lot has been going on in "Scares Us Land". But fear not because we are back and back on track! We missed you all dearly and are sincerely sorry for our absence This week we are bringing and episode back from the dead! Our lost episode on Magdalena Solis, The High Priestess of Blood has new life. Katya and Laramie discuss the terror that is a cult, and the cult of personality that emerged in Yerba Buena in the 1960s. Katya and Laramie also discuss what defines a serial killer, the ruthlessness of STDs and what is truly scary about cults. So welcome back everyone, and we will see you again in two weeks! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, The week of feasts is upon us and we hope you enjoy this episode as you travel to see family, hunker down in your bunker, or enjoy basking in the glow of your retail therapy. If you need a good read for your holiday time, This Place Scares Us suggests reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. This week's episode is in fact about The Haunting of Hill House which has seen several screen adaptations both in movie form and now as a popular Netflix series. Laramie shares his opinions about all of the iterations of The Haunting of Hill House and why sometimes never seeing a monster is scarier than anything. Katya and Laramie debate why the origin of a monster is so important and discuss at length the horror community's view on whether to show the monsters or not. What do you think listeners: is it scarier to see the monsters, or to never see the monsters? With that we leave you to your Thanksgiving. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, We hope you had a spectacular Spooktober, a haunting Halloween, and an amazing All Souls Day! We have been hard at work getting back on our recording schedule after our big life changes. Coming at you this week is the scariest movie we have seen in a good long while. This week's topic is the terrifying 2018 film Hereditary by Ari Aster. Go watch this movie before listening to this week's episode, but find a friend because this is one crazy, scary, disturbing film! Katya and Laramie dissect all of the things that should scare you about this film and some of the things you may have missed your first time watching. Also, Katya gives you a run-down of graduate school hell, and Laramie discusses surviving Trump-land Missoula. Before we leave you this week remember: Your life does not start with choice, so why should it end with it? **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, Like a phoenix we have risen from the ashes of moving, learning new technology, and having a generally chaotic two months! But, WE ARE BACK!! This is our first remotely recorded episode and it sounds a bit rough, but we've worked the bugs out and will have another episode out soon. Its Spooktober and you know what that means!? Horror movies!! In this episode Katya and Laramie discuss the 1985 classic Fright Night directed by Tom Holland (not Spiderman Tom Holland). This movie really is a window into so many things 80s: teen angst, vampires, rape culture, and queer subtext. Katya and Laramie posit that Fright Night may be the best metaphor for sexual predators. So join us as we take a walk down This Place Scares Us memory lane, discuss everything that has been happening in our lives and unpack a surprisingly complex movie from the 80s. We've missed you and love you all so much! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie

We love all our listeners and once life is a bit more settled for us we want to find something other than a sticker to give out to all of you! Now, on to the episode! We are discussing John List who was a horrible murderer. The term family annihilator was developed to describe this monster and we really dive into why he was so vile. There are so many layers to this story with the true events and the Gothic themes and overtones. Plus this story hits close to home for Katya so buckle up and enjoy! Also in this episode Katya and Laramie deconstruct all of the outfits and shoes Catwoman was forced to wear. Katya continues to discuss her feelings on Pandas (we love you Pu-Pu). Laramie writes an on the spot haiku and we give you all the chance to name yourselves! Happy official begging of fall! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie

Whatever you did with your holiday we hope it was a restful and spooky one! This week's episode is the movie Horror Hotel (also known as The City of the Dead). Horror Hotel was released in America in 1963 and chronicles the foggy witchy nightmare that befalls a plucky college student visiting Whitewood Massachusetts. This movie really has everything: fog, witches, death, virgin sacrifice, fog, witches, and more fog. Katya and Laramie also discuss the horror that is the Missoula Gun Show. We have been adjusting to life here in Missoula now that Katya has left to become Dr. Mickelson. While we are sad we are so excited for her, and we will be continuing this podcast with updates coming in the future. We Love you dear listeners and encourage you to be our fact checkers for some of the crazy stuff we say! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear Listeners, We are getting so close to the spooky season and fall time, and today in Montana really feels like the end of summer. Do you believe in aliens dear listeners? Have you had an otherworldly experience? Katya and Laramie discuss the spooky abduction of Travis Walton this week. Much discussion is had on if aliens exist or not, and if aliens actually abduct people. Also, alien fashion and alien measurements are a major topic of interest this episode. Do you believe in Alien Coveralls? This past week marked the one year anniversary of This Place Scares Us! We appreciate you all so very much, and hope you enjoy this week's episode. Join us dear listeners for another fun episode, and thank you all for a wonderful fun year! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear listeners, Sorry for the delay, but we ran into a technical problem with our microphone during the recording of the actual episode 22. Sadly, episode 22's recording was unusable and will be forever lost. However; we will be re-recording this episode's topic at a later date. For now join us for episode 23 henceforth known as episode 22. And boy if episode 22 isn't a good one! This episode is all about Stephen King's "The Shining", and if you have never read the book take a beat go read it and come back and join us (spoiler alert!!). Katya and Laramie discuss all of the history around how this book came to be, the problematic parts of the story, and what makes someone susceptible to ghost-monster-hotel possession. Hello Dear Listeners, Are you enjoying your summer fun? Have you seen any summer ghosts, or perhaps a warm weather bigfoot cooling off in a stream? We haven't but we're still looking. In between our adventures we're releasing another listener suggested episode (thanks Lindsey C.!!!) that is near and dear to Laramie's cold cold heart. Welcome to our episode on Night of Dark Shadows (NODS)!! Does NODS make sense? Not really! Does it relate to the TV series? Kind of?! Hello Dear Listeners, Sorry for our brief break but we had to go have some summer fun! Fear not! We are back this week with episode 20 and what better way to celebrate this milestone than with a listener suggested topic? Our wonderful listener Joanna suggested this weeks topic, and we LOVE IT!! This week Katya and Laramie discuss the story of the 5 boys who never came back. Much like our Dyatlov Pass episode this story has mountains, tragic deaths, and more theories with no answers than you can handle. So strap in for a sad and scary tale about more mountains that you should probably stay far far away from. We hope you are having a great summer full of fun and adventure dear listeners! See you all in two weeks! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, We've received so many wonderful messages from some of you and want to extend our sincere thanks. You are all what make this podcast great! Please continue to write to us and let us know what you think or tell us your spooky stories. We have truly enjoyed our past two episodes sharing scary stories with friends, and discussing a horror classic with The Birds. This weeks episode is much less fun and so very tragic in the way that only true events can be. Join us this week as we discuss the beautiful life and horrific death of PFC LaVena Johnson. We have a long discussion about the American military, and their alleged involvement in what appears to be a very suspicious death. If you want to learn even more about the events we discuss in this episode please look into some of the wonderful independent journalism surrounding the Johnson family's struggle to learn what happened to their daughter. Our deepest respect, and sympathy goes out to the Johnson family. Please remember to stay safe dear listeners. We love you all and sincerely hope the world changes for the better. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, Sorry for the delay this week! We had many things happening and had some technical challenges. Fear not! We have returned to give you a reason to be afraid, even as we move through spring and into the sunny summer season. Don't you all remember that horror in the daylight is real!? Join Katya and Laramie as they discuss (and sing about) Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. There is plenty to be afraid of in this one. Creepy movie directors, condescending lawyers, women breaking into houses to leave birds, birds that peck out eyes (so many eyes!!), if its bird or misogyny related this movie probably has it!! Plus, Katya and Laramie discuss the horror of coming to terms with the bad behavior of artists we love. Special shout outs to The Roxy Theater here in Missoula for screening The Birds, and our wonderful listener Lindsey C.! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Clinkies Dear Listeners!! Welcome to the house party episode of This Place Scares Us! We don't know how your life has been, but spring time has been a bit too busy for all of us at TPSU. So we decided to let our amazing hair down and have a house party!! We brought our wonderful friends and family in to the This Place Scares Us Studio to hear their creepy stories. Taylor (yes, the actually famous Taylor), Ryan (our amazing social media manager), Tori (of Silver Bullet Scares Us fame), and Amy and Aaron (our besties from Frame of Mind MT) join us to tell their scariest stories! This episode was recorded during a house party so sound quality is a bit all over the place, and we were maybe a bit deep into our wine to keep things on a great track. So, if this isn't your thing feel free to let us know. OR BETTER YET: write into us with your favorite creepy topic, ghost story, etc. See you in two weeks for our episode on The Birds We love you dear listeners, **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, Are you enjoying the increasing daylight and all of the new life brought by spring? Do you wish things were still dark and spooky? So come join us as we decide if werewolves are cannibals or not! Also, Katya attempts tongue twisters and Laramie talks about his academic writing. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear Listeners, We hope that things have been going well for you as we leave the doldrums of winter and emerge into spring. We have had a busy couple of weeks here at This Place Scares Us, and honestly our schedules have been scaring us more than anything. But we digress. In this episode Katya and Laramie discuss the sad history of Marcus Wesson and his horrible abuse of everyone in his family. Katya and Laramie bring a lot of humor to an otherwise disturbing topic talking about all of their new band names, vampire Jesus (really) and the difficulties of caring about reading. We had a ton of fun on this episode (partly because Katya and Laramie got so drunk) and spend a bit of time shouting out some of our dear friends, family, and all of you wonderful listeners! Thank you for all making us feel special. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear Listeners, We have had a few technical difficulties, and the end of winter was rather crazy for us! Sorry for the delay in getting you such an exciting episode! We will be getting back on our regular schedule and dropping another episode in two weeks! In this episode we discuss all things Frankenstein! Laramie published a play called Frankenstein Among the Dead (available for purchase at www.theaterfolk.com), and we watched The Bride of Frankenstein to have all the Frankenstein goodness to talk about. Katya decides that Frankenstein is the saddest classic monster, and Laramie discusses the process of writing a dramatic adaptation. We were really bummed to find out that some of our great discussion was lost to faulty recording. We will try and find a way to update what was lost, but in the meantime there is lots to love about this episode! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear Listeners, Has the first month of the new year been all you wanted it to be? Valentine's day is just around the corner and we decided to a share a tale of sisterly love tainted by the horrors of the world for this week's episode! Join Katya and Laramie as they discuss the sadness that was the relationship of the Gibbons twins. A truly Gothic tale tainted by the prejudice of people and the sadness that is poorly treated mental illness. Also, learn about Laramie's new play (more on this coming next episode!). We love you dear listeners and in all honesty this episode focuses on some heavy topics such as institutional and systemic racism, the horror that was mental health treatment in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and the sad ways in which people deal with the struggles of life. February is said to be the worst month of the year, so hang in there everyone! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hello Dear Listeners, We hope you enjoyed our two part episode for episode 10! This week we are discussing the movie Suspiria. Released in 1977, Suspiria was directed by Dario Argento, and is the scariest movie that (maybe) shouldn't be scary. Katya and Laramie talk all about how the inexplicable story of witches, ballerinas, and a ballet academy in the Black Forest of Germany create a story that will make your skin crawl. The use of sound, color, and fairy tale like story all play a part in this horror classic Also, Katya talks about how she would dress up various germs and diseases (no really) and Laramie coins a new term for witch snacks! We sincerely hope the new year is treating you well! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear Listeners, Welcome to part 2 of episode 10! If you didn't have a chance, go check out episode 10 part 1. So, enjoy episode 10 part 2 where we discuss all our thoughts, theories, and ideas about what happened at the Dyatlov Pass. We change our minds all the time about what happened so write to us and let us know what you think happened! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie

This is by far the scariest episode we have ever done, and because it is so scary it is in two parts! Fear not, though because we will be releasing part two in a week. The Dyatlov Pass Incident is this week's topic and is it ever weird. We run you through all of the things you need to know about one of the strangest happenings in modern history. Missing tongues, eyes, radioactive bodies and mountains with foreboding names all make an appearance in this topic (we even scared ourselves a bit with this one)! On a lighter note, we have a lot of fun at the beginning of this episode talking about some of our favorite things, and singing some of our favorite random songs. We Love you dear listeners and we hope that 2018 is a wonderful year for you and yours! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for part two next week! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
Hi Dear Listeners, We hope you had a wonderful and festive holiday! We spent our holiday fighting technical difficulties, but creepy Krampus brought us a sack full of tech support gore and our episode is finally released. Be warned this is a bit of non-scary episode, but the story of the rise and fall of this beloved franchise should scare us all! So come learn why picking up the phone may be a scary thing to do! Also, we shout out some of our wonderful listeners! CommaSplice, Tori, and a wonderful reviewer on iTunes gave us lots of reasons to feel great! Plus, Katya and Laramie struggle with words, idioms, and common phrases throughout! We do joke around a bunch in this episode, but much like our Israel Keys episode, this phenomenon had lasting awful implications for the people involved. So please come join us as we talk about something sad, and finish it up with a recommendation. ALWAYS QUESTION AUTHORITY and TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!! ***CLINKIES*** Katya and Laramie

Hello dear listeners, Do you feel the chill in the air? Do you hear the wind rustling the dead leaves? Are you prepared for the coming bleakness of winter? Rejoice dear listeners because you have not yet been consumed by The Cycle of The Werewolf. Halloween is upon us, and what better time to talk about the horror that is the werewolf. In this episode Katya and Laramie delve into why untamed man beasts, like werewolves, are mostly assholes on par with serial killers in their ability to produce both fear and disgust. Stephen King's book, Cycle of The Werewolf and the 1985 movie, Silver Bullet are the source material for this dive into all things shape shifting. So come join us as we discuss why you may want to werewolf-proof your house (if you even can). Also, we continue to praise Billy Eichner's wonderful talents and pay long overdue tribute to his Difficult People co-star (and series creator) Julie Klausner. If you are able, take a moment to check out our friend Bryan Steward's art page. http://bryansteward.com/ He is responsible for making our wonderful logo and is a very talented artist (thanks Bryan!!). **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie

Poison Pen Letters had a bit of a cultural hay-day in decades past, but the Circleville Letters are by far the pinnacle of this weirdness. We strongly suggest that you watch this movie before listening to this episode as there are ***SPOILERS***!! Or, don't (you live your life however you want). So bear with us as we complete this passion project. **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie P.S.- You'll understand what clinkies means soon enough.
