And now, dear listeners, let's see what's happening on the sandy streets of Yerba Buena, or San Francisco, February 1847. monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf (support the podcast)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)

A self-proclaimed witch in 1800s England used fake magic and poison to con her victims - until one murder too many brought her deadly schemes crashing down.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/YorkshireWitchFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: What if we just discovered we're sharing Earth with another intelligent species? Scientists have found something mind-blowing, and if they are right, nothing is ever going to be the same. (When They Arrive – Earth's First Contact Playbook) *** When a young boy stumbled upon a cave ritual in rural Mexico, he uncovered a terrifying cult led by a self-proclaimed goddess who had turned village farmers into willing executioners. (Blood Priestess of Yerba Buena) *** In the case of an 1816 murder, an old security guard recognized the attacker just by voice - but when the suspect ended up on death row, he swore they got the wrong guy. (Murder At The Pottery) *** When strange noises in an old farmhouse turned out to be a mongoose who could sing, spy on neighbors, and speak multiple languages, the Irving family's quiet life on the Isle of Man would never be the same. (The Strange True Tale of Gef The Talking Mongoose) *** There's something seriously strange about Saturn - a giant hexagon storm at its north pole that's got both NASA scientists and conspiracy theorists buzzing about what it could mean, strange radio signals that are unexplainable, and the odd history of how it was seen and interpreted by humans through the years. (The Science, Secrets, Strangeness, and Songs of Saturn) *** In 1800s England, Mary Bateman posed as a powerful witch to con desperate people out of their money - until her "magical cures" turned to murder.
The debut of Chonkers the giant sea lion to our humble city inspired this episode. I interview Peter, a restoration ecologist for the local gov and outdoorsy kind of guy. Peter has worked for 30 years to restore biodiversity in San Francisco and to connect San Franciscans to nature in the city. Following geography graduate school at UCLA, Peter worked for ten years as a natural resources specialist for the National Park Service at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and then in 2005, Peter founded Nature in the City, the first and only organization (still) wholly dedicated to restoration and community stewardship of the Franciscan bioregion. Since 2012, Peter has worked at the San Francisco Environment Department as the Senior Biodiversity Coordinator, convening an interagency working group to promote local biodiversity policies and programs; producing and implementing the Healthy Ecosystems Chapter of the City's 2021 Climate Action Plan; and serving as the restoration ecologist for Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands in San Francisco Bay.https://reimaginingsf.org/ Thanks for listening, Bay Area!
Shane takes issue with how Samson's developers swindled fans, why Yerba Buena is the Portal 3 we've all been waiting for, and the story of how he ended up in the credits for a video game!
Over the past five years, I've shared fragments of the sometimes-comedic stories of 1847 Yerba Buena. But 1847 deserves more than scattered stories. It was a transformative year for the Pueblo de Yerba Buena, the District of San Francisco, Monterey and Alta California.I plan to retell the 1847 story in a multipart series. And while I'm sad to say goodbye to Yerba Buena, I'm excited to tell this next chapter, the year before the gold.monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf (support the podcast)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)

We revisit our episode with Gregory Maguire.******"That's really all we are obliged to do for those we call our enemies. We are obliged to see them as humans, and then we behave the way we will. We are obliged not to consider them as less than human because that way, all hell breaks loose. - Gregory MaguireGregory Maguire expresses himself with extreme precision. While many of us may grasp for words to communicate a specific emotion or to describe a series of events, Gregory seemingly has words and turns of phrase on command. What a delight it is to listen to Gregory talk about his journey, his writing, and his thoughts on a wide variety of topics. Close to Gregory's heart is the belief that everyone has a backstory, a context—even our enemies. And no matter how difficult the task may seem, he believes it is our duty to understand that story and find it within ourselves to empathize with them—not to excuse them but to simply see them as humans.Gregory has built his career around telling the stories of antiheroes, most notably through the reimaginings of classic fairytales in novels such as "Wicked," "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister," and "Mirror Mirror." That ability to find empathy and a curiosity to understand even the most seemingly undeserving characters emerges in his other children's and young adult books and is deeply rooted in experiences from Gregory's early life.In this episode, Gregory shares those early life experiences (which can honestly be described as “Dickensian”) and how his relationships with his father and siblings have impacted his writing and life choices. He tells us about his love of the “arresting strangeness” of literary worlds and how this sensation inspired him to become a writer. He also shares why he believes in the children's stories he writes, not always getting a “happily ever after.”***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In his reading challenge, Arresting Strangeness (a term coined by J.R.R. Tolkien), Gregory has compiled a list of his favorite books that envelop you completely and force you to look at the world around you anew. Have you ever felt like some stories should feel more connected than they do in your brain but instead they feel like untethered facts that are somehow connected? This episode is about just that. By January 30, 1847, the Pueblo de Yerba Buena was officially renamed the Town of San Francisco. Mexican laws weren't very well written, if written at all, which left the US military in charge of creating order in a land (Alta California), that wasn't used to having rules. This episode is a discussion between Girlina and architectural historian, Jonathon Lammers, regarding the Laws of the Town of San Francisco 1847, as captured in what is believed to be California's first pamphlet written entirely in English.monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf (support the podcast)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)

In the last episode I discussed the lead up to the Battle of Santa Clara. I chased this rabbit hole of a topic to figure out why Washington Allon Bartlett, Yerba Buena's first American alcalde, was missing for a period of time during his very short term in office. Trumpeter Scobey did his apprenticeship with the Yerba Buena band, playing second to Lu Waters. By the late 1940's he was itching to start his own group and these 1950-53 recordings for Good Time Jazz show the first flowering of his vision of Traditional Jazz. With Jack Buck, Wally Rose, Burt Bales, Dick Lammi, George Probert and special guests Darnell Howard and Albert Nicholas, the band also served as a backdrop for the singing and banjo playing of Clancy Hayes --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
Today's episode is about the changing landscape of Yerba Buena from July 1846 - 1847, just after the US takeover and the early broken promises to Californios. In the middle of all the changes, Yerba Buena's first American appointed Alcalde, Washing Allon Bartlett, goes missing, and it has everything to do with ... cows. "I spend a lot of time trying to hope that I'll remember little things and how a certain simple thing felt. … Writing is one way of trying to capture that feeling, even if I'm fictionalizing it still.” - Nina LaCourIf Nina LaCour were a drink, she would be a cozy cup of tea. You're not rushing to finish a conversation with Nina. Rather, you are spending time exploring the details. And that is exactly what we did in this episode. The world moves fast. Usually faster than we'd like it to. But writing can gift us the ability to slow a moment down, to digest and analyze at a more intentional pace. For Nina LaCour, writing starts with observing the world around you, getting ready to break it down into words and unravel the meaning on a page. As a new writer, Nina found it best to share those observations through young adult literature after falling in love with it in college. She has since written a picture book, “Mama, Mommy and Me in the Middle,” and returned to an adult novel she shelved early in her career (“Yerba Buena”). More recently, she released "The Apartment House on Poppy Hill," the sweetest chapter book. Nina's work is notably thoughtful and gentle. Her complex topics have resonated deeply with young readers and adults alike (including our own recent guest, Mark Oshiro). She's best known for her novels such as “Hold Still,” "Everything Leads to You," and "We Are Okay," which received the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. In this episode, she shares her journey to falling in love with young adult literature and how Virginia Woolf helped her find the love of her life. She also explores writing's capacity to uncover the depth within every moment and discusses the importance of queer family representation in literature.***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In her reading challenge, At the Intersection, Nina has curated a list of books at the intersection of queerness and family. You can find her list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com/nina-lacourThis episode's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Faith Rice Mills, librarian at Nelda Sullivan Middle School in Pasadena, Texas. Today, I virtually interview Edwin Bryant, the author of the 1848 best seller, “What I Saw in California, Journal of a Tour, 1846- 1847”. Through the magic of AI generated voices, I simulate a virtual conversation with Edwin Bryant; a journalist, turned overland traveler, turned the second American Alcalde of Yerba Buena, and then finally, a bestselling author. About 95% of the words our guest speaks, are taken directly from his book. I only made minimal changes to past tense descriptions and similar small changes. monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf (support the podcast)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)

The story of the Hudson Bay Company, in Yerba Buena, has been reduced to a few sentences that are very Hudson Bay Company-centric. “That place was miserable, and we didn't make any money, so we left.” It always felt like the guy who says, “Yeah, well, I didn't want that job, anyway.” Today's episode is peripherally about the English Hudson Bay Company's short-lived post in Yerba Buena. But, it's mostly about the people involved at the store, whose credit to that history has been lost over the last two centuries. And, they deserve to have their story retold to a current audience. Maybe, retelling this story today, it can become a part of early San Francisco's history, again. Once you hear the story, you'll know what I mean.I will respectfully tell this story, and, need to provide advisement to my listeners that this episode contains a delicate topic that can be challenging for some people. We discuss self-harm and I'll dance lightly around any details. monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf (support the podcast)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)
On this episode, it's my two year anniversary this week and I am sharing some responses from a question I posted on Instagram asking what is your favorite horror movie, horror icon or scene in a horror movie. You guys did not disappoint at all and had such wonderful choices, so this is my lovefest to all who answered! Also substitute the word season for anniversary, I don't believe in seasons but my mouth and zombie brain were in disconnect at the time of recording. I also drop a bit of exciting podcast news at the very tippy top of this episode. My how the time flies when you are having fun discussing and dissecting horror films! For this episode, Electric Boogaloo, the artist is Yerba Buena. Sadly, the Ollie & Jerry song from Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo wasn't available to add to my podcast titles playlist, more's the pity. Game Over Man! I have found myself drawn to a specific piece of land that figuratively and literally became central to the Pueblo de Yerba Buena. Why was it left empty? And, considering it shows up on every Yerba Buena and early San Francisco map, why is it hard to find early information on it? monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksftwitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)
If the Battle of Yerba Buena doesn't sound familiar, there's a good reason for that. The events, just before and after ‘The Battle of Yerba Buena', tell the story. There are two events, in my opinion, that make up the ‘Battle of Yerba Buena'.If you enjoyed this episode, and my original research, you can make a one-time donation at www.buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf. monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)
(© University of California, Berkeley)

Back in the early 1960s, the scamming Hernández brothers rolled into the poor, isolated village of Yerba Buena, Mexico, and claimed they were prophets of the gods, telling fanciful tales of untold riches for the villagers if only they did whatever the two brothers said. This worked for a while, but when the townsfolk began … Continue reading Episode 345: Magdalena Solís, The High Priestess of Blood
