Fresh off The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, Andrew Garfield wanted to star in something different, and he chose an indie film that criticizes the Hollywood lifestyle. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. This was the third film for David Robert Mitchell, director of the critically-acclaimed horror film It Follows. Under the Silver Lake follows an aimless millennial slacker named Sam who believes there's a gigantic conspiracy going on in Los Angeles, and the general populace is ignorant to it. The disappearance of a female neighbor named Sarah (portrayed by Riley Keough) sparks his urge to explore the deep seedy depths of the City of Angels. What will Sam find in this Hitchock-inspired suspense-thriller? Disasterpeace has a claim to being one of the most influential artists of the decade; in a quiet, chameleonic way. Though Rich Vreeland doesn't usually do things quietly. His best known work is awash in digital decay and thumping kick drums. The horror sensibilities of John Carpenter fed through a Super Nintendo. His industrial by way of chip tune aesthetic gained him praise in the blissful to terrifying fuzz of Fez and the insidious lurk of It Follows. Vreeland's absurd prolificness has now led him to full orchestral work as he scores Under the Silver Lake, the newest film from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell. Looking back on his catalogue, there's truly little that Vreeland hasn't tinkered with to great success. So, listen to our interview with him, read our thoughts on Fez and see why we think Diasterpeace is one of the best of the ‘10s.

I hope you're ready for a one-two punch of horror icons on Collider Ladies Night. Last week we put the spotlight on Mia Goth for the release of MaXXXine, and now we've got Longlegs headliner Maika Monroe who is, hands down, one of the most exciting voices in the horror space right now — and has been for a decade. It Follows completely changed the game for Monroe in 2014. The David Robert Mitchell-written and directed film featured a brilliant concept that was expertly executed, putting the project on the path to becoming a modern horror classic. That wasn't the only 2014 release Monroe had that earned such high honors. She also starred in Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard's The Guest, yet another beloved film festival gem that went on to be hailed as top-tier horror by the masses. And Monroe has not stopped excelling in the genre since. She consistently works with directing visionaries with bold and ambitious ideas, ideas that give Monroe opportunities to push boundaries in horror storytelling and challenge herself as an actor in that space. Not only is her latest in that department a big winner in every respect on screen, but the quality of the work seems to be paying off significantly. Longlegs is already setting records for its distributor, Neon, and is poised to take in $14 - $17 million for its debut weekend.Monroe leads Longlegs as Lee Harker, a new FBI agent who finds herself working on an especially gruesome case. Given her unusually adept perception, FBI veteran Agent Carter (Blair Underwood) recruits Lee to help him track down a serial killer with ties to the occult. In celebration of Longlegs' nationwide release, Monroe swung by for a Collider Ladies Night interview to dig into how she carved out the perfect place for herself in Hollywood. Hosted on Acast. Dude the sets off finding the wealthy Jeffrey Lebowski that the pair were looking for and asks him for compensation for his soiled rug. The Big Lebowski flat out refuses the request, calls the Dude a bum, and kicks him out of his house. Neo Noir is the filmmakers' playground and at times it's perfectly fine if it's weird, but if it's weird let it move and have all the right elements this however was missed by many critics. Under the Silver Lake is a fantastic fun movie by David Robert Mitchell that raises real questions about the world of LA and show business.

Our first week for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST (in which we discuss a different horror movie every weekday) is all about getting physical. Sex, Romance, Seduction and all of the consequences. Today's discussion is a resonating sleeper hit from 2014 directed by David Robert Mitchell in which a young girl finds herself constantly pursued by something after sleeping with a boy. She's the only one that can see it and it can look like anybody. It's slow but constant and you don't want to know what happens if it catches you. We're talking about one of the best horror movies of the 2010s in David Robert Mitchell's 2014 film “It Follows” starring Maika Monroe and Keir Gilchrist. It doesn't matter what part of Detroit you live in. It's coming for you and you better hook up with somebody quick before it gets you. I would go to the bottom of the ocean and fuck a starfish but thats just me. Maybe a Mermaid or a Giant Squid. Let's see “It” try to get at one of those things. Check and mate. Cold beer, hot day... the perfect environment to break down David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silver Lake with Hayes Davenport from The Flagrant Ones and Hollywood Handbook! We're talking Nepo Babies, the code buried under the surface, cheering on the Fightin' Barristers and trying to figure out just what the heck is so broken in us that we became podcasters anyway?! Don't miss this ep! NOTE FROM GEORGE: In addition to the causes of homelessness that already existed, COVID forced many people onto the street and has put an incredible strain on the already underfunded resources. With this in mind, and with respect to both the art we're discussing here and the work Hayes is doing, I've set up a recurring donation to Bethesda Project. This is an organization here in Philadelphia helping people get back on their feet, and I encourage you all to donate as well, or find a similar cause near you to support - it's a hard world out there, and plenty of people are fighting to make it harder. ----more---- PLUS: Check out the BLHHiP Patreon to get early access to episodes, bonus episodes, discord access and more! In this episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, two modestly-costed movies from 2014 that turned out to be really rather successful.Writer Derek Kolstad had got his first screen credit on a Dolph Lundgren-headlined movie. And he had a plan for a slimmed down action movie, with a 75-year old lead character. Things changed though when a man called Keanu Reeves got interested in it.With It Follows, writer/director David Robert Mitchell had actually planned to do a different movie, until it became clear that it'd be easier to get his horror project funded. But it was still low budget enough to give him absolute control over how he wanted to shoot it...Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriesSupport this podcast: www.patreon.com/simonbrew.Find our print magazines at store.filmstories.co.uk Hosted on Acast. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are a duo who don't wait for permission and refuse to let small budgets reign in their storytelling ambitions. Since announcing themselves as a fierce new force in independent filmmaking a decade ago with the meta-horror Resolution, the pair have released a further four films, each one a staggeringly original triumph of imagination over budgetary restraints. Spring was a low-cost Lovecraftian tale set on a gorgeous stretch of Italian coast that corkscrewed between romance and brutal body-horror. The Endless was a time-loop sci-fi head-scratcher involving a UFO cult that proved similarly spell-binding made on a similar shoestring. By 2019's Synchronic, about a designer drug that allows users to step through time, they had A-list actors like Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan queuing up to work with them, and superhero studios keen to collaborate (they've since helmed episodes of Marvel's Moon Knight and Loki). Together, they're storytellers capable of building epic worlds without requiring epic resources. While Benson and Moorhead have enjoyed their recent excursions into the MCU, unsettling paranormal puzzles made on a dime are where they say their hearts truly lie. Which is why, when the pandemic struck and the world was thrown into lockdown, they began planning a supernatural mystery they could shoot in Benson's apartment, star in themselves (the duo often act in their own movies) and craft almost entirely themselves. Something In The Dirt – their most compelling film to date – tells the tale of neighbours John and Levi, drawn into an unlikely friendship by unexplainable phenomenons in their apartment block. They decide to document this activity in search of fame and fortune – but can each party trust the other, as revelations about their secretive lives follow them down a rabbit hole into the unknown? We met with Benson and Moorhead in person last summer, before Something In The Dirt's release, while they were filming Loki season two. They told us about their writing habits and helped us decode one of the most jigsaw-like cult dramas in decades – a must-watch for fans of David Robert Mitchell's Under The Silver Lake and films like it. This is a spoiler conversation so be sure to catch the film before tuning in – it's available on Hulu for our listeners in America, and video on demand if you're tuning in from the UK.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. The boys get back to their roots and continue the Moorhead-Bensonathon with Something in the Dirt (2022), which should not be confused namewise with Ben Wheatley's In The Earth, or contentwise with David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silver Lake. Or Richard Kelly's Southland Tales. Or Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's first film Resolution.

[School of Movies 2022] WARNING: This episode contains lengthy discussions on depression, trauma and suicide. You do not need to see this movie before listening to the episode. In fact, in a rare instance we actually suggest you *don't* see it, for reasons we will be elaborating on at length. It has reviewed well, and as with many horror movies based on a simple hook that shakes people up, it has done gangbusters at the box office. That puts it in league with Saw and Paranormal Activity and Insidious. And as you'll hear, on a technical scale, in terms of moment to moment nerve-jangling scenes it ties itself together with a confidence that makes debut director Parker Finn likely to be successful moving forward. As I watched I became aware that the premise was uncannily similar to It Follows (2014) by David Robert Mitchell, and I've seen many people online echo that similarity. However, my idle brain found nine further films that this clearly draws from, which makes a spread of influences that is either shameless or impressive, depending on perspective. But that isn't the reason not to see it. Back at the roundtable once again, the boys review the 2014 horror film It Follows! A unique spin on the horror genre, It Follows is a well-thought out and tension-filled film by David Robert Mitchell. That doesn't mean the boys enjoyed it, however. Not all of them, anyway. Flora discusses the plot and behind the scenes details with Derek and Justin while hearing their take. Is it a genre-bending game changer? Or is it a bit too slow to keep the attention? The boys talk all about it in this bonus episode! Don't forget to check out another roundtable while you're at it. Find Derek at Monsters Among Us Find Zenger at Zeng This! #Ad #MeUndies
