A heads-up before you press play: this is a bonus crossover from my true crime podcast, Murder on the Couch, dropping into your Virtual Couch / Waking Up to Narcissism feed. It's heavier than usual and opens with a disturbing familicide case that I don't sugarcoat, so if that's not where you are right now, it's completely okay to sit this one out and come back when you're ready. If you stay, I use the case to get at the things we talk about all the time—shame, compartmentalization, the altruistic defense, emotional immaturity, and differentiation—because the behavior is horrific, but the psychology underneath it is deeply human. John List killed his wife, his mother, and his three children—then walked away convinced God would understand. Murder on the Couch is back. Licensed therapist Tony Overbay reopens one of true crime's most chilling family annihilation cases, but not for the manhunt or the famous 18 years List spent hiding in plain sight as "Bob Clark." Tony sits with the question that actually keeps him up at night: how does a devout, rule-following Sunday school teacher reach a place where murder becomes, in his own mind, the most loving thing he could do? If you've ever performed "fine" while something was quietly falling apart inside you, this one lands closer to home than you'd expect. In this episode: Untangle guilt ("I did something bad") from shame ("I am bad")—and why shame left in the dark only grows heavier Spot the "altruistic defense": how control and harm get repackaged as love, devotion, and protection See how rigidity, compartmentalization, and a performed self can hollow a person out long before any crisis hits Learn the ACT distinction between the conceptualized self (the story) and the observing self (the awareness)—and why List had no one home to catch him when the story collapsed Drawing on acceptance and commitment therapy, David Schnarch's work on differentiation, and Richard Rohr's reframe of shame, Tony brings 600-plus episodes of clinical insight to the cases that won't let him go. Shame grows in concealment and shrinks in connection. And Tony's looking for a co-host—if a case has gotten under your skin and you know why, email contact@tonyoverbay.com and pitch it. 00:00 Bonus Episode Setup 00:21 Murder on the Couch Returns 02:56 Content Warning and Themes 05:53 John List Case Opens 08:46 Show Relaunch and Co-Host Invite 12:40 John List Background and Unraveling 17:31 Compartmentalization Explained 19:53 Shame Versus Guilt 24:21 ACT Defusion and Healing 25:47 Shame Architecture of John List 28:21 Altruistic Defense and Covert Narcissism 30:49 Narcissistic Injury 31:26 Altruistic Defense 35:32 Love Versus Control 36:29 Rigidity Explained 38:08 Rules And Fragility 42:06 Eighteen Years Hidden 45:40 Conceptualized Self 48:35 Excavating The Self 52:56 Why This Case Haunts 54:31 Faith And Performance 58:07 Tell The Truth 59:41 Closing And Co-Hosts Please follow Tony on Instagram @virtual.couch on Tiktok @virtualcouch on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/tonyoverbaylmft and on Substack https://thevirtualcouch.substack.com/ You can reach out to Tony through his website tonyoverbay.com or by emailing contact @ tonyoverbay.com

In 1971, a quiet suburban home in Westfield became the center of one of the most chilling family annihilation cases in American history. This is the story of John List, a deeply religious, seemingly respectable accountant, husband, and father who methodically murdered his entire family inside their mansion, then disappeared without a trace. For nearly 18 years, he lived under a new identity while authorities had no clear idea what he looked like, where he went, or how he managed to evade capture for so long. This episode explores: • The financial collapse that triggered the unraveling of the List household • The psychological and religious justification behind the murders • The calculated, step-by-step execution of the crime • How List successfully erased himself from his own identity • The breakthrough involving forensic sculptor Frank Bender and America's Most Wanted • The final capture and conviction after nearly two decades on the runThis case isn't just about murder it's about shame, control, identity, and how outward respectability can conceal unimaginable violence.Because sometimes the most dangerous people are the ones no one ever suspects. When Killers Get Caught is a true crime podcast focused on the people, psychology, and moments behind violent crimes and what happens when the darkness finally meets the light.Follow and join the conversation:
In the winter of 1971, Westfield, New Jersey found itself right in the middle of a world-wide manhunt. The fugitive, who murdered his entire family, left a note justifying the killings as mercy on their souls for the financial ruin that would soon befall them. It would take an international TV show and one very keen neighbor to capture the man that had evaded police for nearly two decades. Psychics keep wedging themselves into police cases — and grieving families pay the price. Nick Pell explains the grift on Skeptical Sunday!Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by writer and researcher Nick Pell!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1329On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:Psychic detective work traces back to 19th-century spiritualism, which surged after the Civil War and WWI as a grief-coping mechanism — part therapy, part pop religion, part proto-reality TV. The post-WWII pulp era rebranded it as "science," birthing the modern psychic detective archetype. The genre's most-cited "successes" — Etta Smith in the Melanie Uribe case, Dorothy Allison on the John List murders, and Noreen Renier's many TV appearances — all collapse under scrutiny. Police never credited any of them with usable leads, and Allison reportedly tried to bribe cops to vouch for her.Sylvia Browne is the cautionary tale that turns this from harmless grift into genuine harm. She told Amanda Berry's mother her daughter was dead in 2004 — Amanda was alive, held captive in Cleveland until 2013. Mom died never knowing. Browne botched the Shawn Hornbeck case too.Four mechanisms explain every "psychic solved it" story: confirmation bias (remembering hits, forgetting misses), post-hoc reasoning (vague claims retrofitted to fit), emotional vulnerability of grieving families, and Barnum statements — deliberately vague phrases like "I see water" that let your brain fill in the blanks.Real cases get cracked by forensic evidence, behavioral profiling, and community tip lines — the unsexy, methodical work that rarely makes headlines. Families seeking closure are better served by counseling and victim support than by false hope, and learning to spot the four tells above makes anyone a sharper media consumer.Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Have you taken a Lyft, shopped at Walmart, or used Facebook in the last decade? If so, you've likely been a participant in one of John List's experiments. In this episode of The Pie, List, Professor of Economics and Director of the Becker Friedman Institute, returns to discuss his new 900-page textbook, Experimental Economics: Theory in Practice — the field guide he wishes he'd had as he pioneered the use of real-world experiments to figure out what moves human behavior across policy and business. From a Wisconsin baseball-card table in 1985 to the White House, Lyft, and Walmart, List shares the lessons, mistakes, and ethical questions that have shaped three decades of discovery.
John List meticulously murdered his entire family in 1971 before fleeing the state, creating an entirely new life for himself, and avoiding arrest for nearly 18 years. How did he manage to get away with his atrocious crimes? What was his motive for killing his wife, three children and his mother? When he later remarried under a different persona, did his new wife ever suspect him to be a killer?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Super Beetles have long been one of the most misunderstood—and often underappreciated—air-cooled Volkswagens here in the United States. But if you look across the pond, or even dig into certain corners of the hardcore VW scene, the story is completely different. Built from 1971 to 1977, the Super Beetle was actually Volkswagen's most advanced evolution of the classic Beetle platform. With its MacPherson strut front suspension, improved handling, and increased comfort, it marked a major leap forward in performance and drivability. Yet despite those advancements, it never quite earned the respect it deserved in the U.S.—while in Europe, it's celebrated, raced, and even has its own dedicated series: the Kafer Cup. On this episode, we sit down with John List, one of the original founders of SuperBeetlesOnly.com, to dive deep into what makes the Super Beetle special. We talk about the platform's untapped potential, the best performance upgrades, and how parts from other Volkswagen and Porsche models can be adapted to take these cars to the next level. If you're into German Look Beetles, suspension tuning, or just want to understand why the Super Beetle might be the most overlooked performance VW out there—this episode is packed with insight, real-world experience, and inspiration to rethink everything you thought you knew about the Super.

According to the TIAA Institute, American adults correctly answered just 49% of basic financial questions in 2024, suggesting a fundamental gap in economic literacy. In this episode Robert Shimer, Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, and John List, Professor of Economics and Director of the Becker Friedman Institute, discuss Economics for Everyone, a groundbreaking program that teaches economic reasoning without the math. From classroom experiments that predict market equilibrium to 60 professional videos watched worldwide and teacher training programs across Chile, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia, they explore how economic thinking shapes everything from Instagram scrolling to tariff policy, and why critical thinking about causality versus correlation has never been more important.
On November 9, 1971, a man named John List got to work killing his entire family. After killing his wife Helen, his mother Alma, and his children Patricia, John Frederick, and Frederick, he vanished. In 1989, List was arrested and ultimately convicted of the murders.Today, we speak with a longtime listener with a unique perspective on this case: He corresponded with John List while the family annihilator served his life sentence in prison.Shoutout to Andy — one of our beloved patrons — who was kind enough to come on the show. In this episode of the Crack House Chronicles Donnie and Dale discuss family annihilator John List. List was an American mass murderer and long-time fugitive. On November 9, 1971, he killed his wife, mother, and three children in their Westfield, New Jersey home, then disappeared. He had planned the murders so meticulously that nearly a month passed before anyone suspected that something was amiss. https://www.crackhousechronicles.com/ https://linktr.ee/crackhousechronicles https://www.tiktok.com/@crackhousechronicles https://www.facebook.com/crackhousechronicles Check out our MERCH! https://www.teepublic.com/user/crackhousechronicles Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/john-list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_List_ https://medium.com/@natasha.leigh/family-annihilator-eluded-police-for-5-years-john-list-13cf735b7a15 https://macabreatmidnight.medium.com/john-list-b469834957fc

How hard is it to disappear after killing someone? But what if the victims were your own family? The idea of vanishing after such a crime seems unfathomable—yet some manage it, at least for a while. Few cases illustrate this more chillingly than those of John List and Robert Fisher, two men accused of murdering their families and slipping into the shadows. So it has happened before and will undoubtedly happen again, which takes us to today's case. It was a quiet Monday morning in Washington, D.C., on March 1, 1976, when William Bradford Bishop Jr.—a rising foreign service officer at the State Department—received the news that would, according to investigators, set a horrific plan in motion. He'd been passed over for a promotion. By mid-afternoon, Bishop told his secretary he was feeling unwell. Colleagues noted that he seemed agitated. One of them, Roy Harrell Jr., would later become the last confirmed person to see him. Bishop left the Foggy Bottom building and disappeared. What followed was a meticulously planned crime. In 1971, devout churchgoer, doting father, and seemingly mild-mannered accountant John List calmly murdered his entire family - his wife, his mother, and his three children - in their New Jersey mansion. He then vanished without a trace, leaving behind a chilling confession letter and a perfectly staged crime scene where the bodies lay undiscovered for nearly a month. What drove this "respectable" man to such horror? And how did he manage to disappear for 18 years, starting a brand-new life while his crimes faded into cold case infamy? This episode dives into one of America's most cold-blooded family annihilators - a man who traded his soul for control, and thought God would forgive him for it. John List was a meliculous planner. He almost got away with murdering his whole family.
To outsiders, John List was a mild-mannered, church-going father of three whose oddest trait was mowing the lawn in a suit and tie. But then the bodies of his wife, mother and three children were uncovered rotting in the family's Westfield, New Jersey, home in late 1971. This was no whodunit: List left notes explaining not only what he'd done, but why he claimed he had to do it. Then he disappeared, becoming one of America's most wanted criminals. We've all heard the advice that when you buy new clothes you should wash them first before you wear them. But what's the reason? Is it more of a “just to be safe” idea or is there a real concern? This episode begins with an explanation.https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2010/11/wash-and-then-wear-unwashed-clothes-may-have-formaldehyde/index.htm Understanding the science of weight loss has come a long way in just the past several years. It isn't just, “eat fewer calories than you burn.” There is a lot more to it than that. If you want to know the latest cutting-edge advice on losing weight and keeping it off, listen to my guest, Dr. Richard Johnson, who is at the forefront of research on obesity and diabetes. He is he is a medical doctor, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and author of the book, Why Nature Wants Us to Be Fat – The Surprising Science Behind Why We Gain Weight and How We Can Prevent – and Reverse It. (https://amzn.to/3tXHbCF). You often hear business gurus talk about how important it is to make your business idea scalable. What does that mean? How do you make something scalable? It seems like many ideas are simply not scalable. And if an idea isn't scalable, can it still be great? John List is an economist (formerly with Lyft) who explains how ideas scale – or don't. He also explains how great businesses know how to pivot to stay competitive. John is author of the book The Voltage Effect: How to Make Good Ideas Great and Great Ideas Scale (https://amzn.to/3K3cCkT). Listen as he reveals some great examples of ideas that could and could not scale and how he helped Lyft scale their business. Usually, you smile because you are happy.
