Crypticon Seattle: Comfort Horror Panel Recording

Is there anything more comforting in horror than the relationship between Ripley and Newt in Aliens (1987)? Comfort Horror. It’s a thing. It keeps the fandom fed. We come back time and again to get scared, and we love it. Why? This is the third of my series of Crypticon Seattle convention panel recordings. Panels are the lifeblood of this annual horror gathering, feeding the fandom’s macabre knowledge cravings. Horror movies are the bonds this community shares, and to understand why, this panel examines the lure of horror for many of us. In Kim Douthit’s panel, Comfort Horror, she asks her panelists the question, “Why do we replay the same nightmares? What movies bring us comfort in a time rife with anxiety?” It seems antithetical that many of us crave the experience of being scared. For some, it’s a ritual. A rite of passage. We overcome our perceived fears. Building up the courage to soldier through a horror movie is a peak emotional triumph for many people. For others, the familiarity of the repeated horror experience becomes a form of comfort. There are a few horror movies that I know, frame by frame, and each story beat and moment. I’ll bet that you have a movie or two where you have seen it so many times, you can recite the dialogue when watching it. Several of those movies were discussed on this panel. In an era where most people don’t get to feed their adrenaline through hunting or exploring, horror movies can fill that need. Curiosity is a challenge. Mysteries are meant to be uncovered. Horror movies show us what might be hiding under the bed, within the mirror, or sneaking around in the woods. Kids demand answers. For many in the horror community, these youthful questions persist, and horror offers some shocking responses. Some adrenaline junkies chase thrills by going on roller coasters, skydiving, or downhill skiing. Horror movies can provide those thrills without the threat of injury. The Crypticon Seattle “Comfort Horror” panelists (L to R): Tony Gee, Kim Douthit, Kennedy Rainer, Heather Alexander, and Melissa Leigh. Comfort Horror, a Crypticon Seattle Panel Recording This is the third panel recording from Crypticon Seattle 2026. If you enjoyed listening to this panel, I have two others you can listen to. Tiki Terrors and Tropical Horror, hosted by Brian Callahan, and Good Boy: Pets in Horror Movies, hosted by Brien Gorham. For those of you who don’t go to horror conventions, this gives you a flavor of what it’s like, and hopefully, you will come out to Crypticon one of these years. Bart Mixon was Born in Houston, Texas, Mixon began his special make-up effects career working on local independent productions, including the 1984 thriller Courage, starring, co-written and produced by Ronny Cox. He eventually became a make-up lab technician and on-set makeup artist on more high profile productions, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), The Supernaturals (1986) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). Perhaps more notably, he worked on The Terminator (1984) and was part of the "Robot Team" on RoboCop (1987). He returned to do makeup FX work on Pet Sematary Two (1992). In 1994, Mixon entered into a partnership with fellow Star Trek make-up artist Earl Ellis to create the make-up effects studio Mixon & Ellis FX (or ME FX). Over the next four years, the studio created make-up and prosthetics for such films as Fargo (1996), Men in Black (1997) and Rushmore (1998). Mixon closed down the studio in 1998 and has since worked as a freelance artist on films such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Planet of the Apes (2001), Men in Black II (2002), The Ring (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Collateral (2004).  Mixon also was the prosthetic make-up artist for The Thing on Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). They celebrate the 40th anniversary of the very fun movie - and great theme song - Once Bitten, which was Jim Carrey's feature film debut, and a star was born! This movie has an epic dance number, gay jokes, butts, Megan Mullally, and lots of buttons. On this week's episode of The Therapy Crouch, the gang are back from their travels and there is a lot to unpack. Ross kicks things off with his dreamy sunrise snorkel with horses in Barbados, while Peter gives a full theme-park debrief after their “holiday of a lifetime” to Universal Studios — including the rides that nearly had him upside-down, inside-out and mildly incontinent. There's chaos from Fright Night, jet-lagged 6am adventures, and a heartfelt listener story that leads them into a surprisingly deep chat about turning 40, giving fewer f*cks and finding out who you really are. Abbey dives into her latest passive-aggressive Instagram threads (no context as usual), sparking debates about midlife crises, emotional burnout and why our brains obsess over insults more than compliments. In the Agony Abs, they help a listener whose partner double-booked their night out during peak firework season — leaving their terrified pooch in the middle. Plus, an emotional email from a mum navigating the reality of her kids moving to the other side of the world. It's a warm, chaotic, funny, emotional episode with plenty of wisdom… and even more unintentional nonsense.00:00 – Intro00:18 – Sunkissed Returns & Holiday Catch-Up00:55 – Ross's Dreamy Horse Snorkelling Experience01:46 – Saddle Sizes03:10 – Movember, Moustaches & the ‘Womb Broom' Comment04:51 – Orlando & Universal Studios Trip06:03 – Terrifying Rollercoasters & Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure07:20 – Universal Fright Night Chaos11:14 – Amazon's Surprise Gift Delivery15:46 – 'Threads' Begin: Passive-Aggressive Instagram Psychology17:45 – Life Begins or ends at 40 & Midlife Wobbles28:03 – Dinner Plans & Relationship CompromiseFind great deals on the things you love https://www.ebay.co.uk/Email: thetherapycrouch@gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetherapycrouchpodcastTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thetherapycrouch Website: https://thetherapycrouch.com/ For more from Peterhttps://twitter.com/petercrouchFor more from Abbeyhttps://www.instagram.com/abbeyclancyOur clips channelhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZntcv96YhN8IvMAKsz4Dbg#TheTherapyCrouch #AbbeyAndPete #RelationshipAdvice #Podcast Hosted on Acast.
