Does a sequel to a Christmas movie count as a Christmas movie? It doesn't matter! Our patrons voted and Joe Dante's anarchic, loony tunes inspired, ahead of it's time fourth wall breaking creature feature was - to our delight - the winner. Join us in a fun, light episode in which we marvel at amazing creature effects, enjoy beloved character actors, share our favorite of the film's (many) gags, and discuss Robert Picardo's (Star Trek: Voyager) consentual-nonconsent relationship with Greta the Gremlin. Thank you all so, so much for listening and supporting the show. We'll see you next year! An extra special thanks to our $10 Executive Producers: JetChiclete, Isaac, squishward, Walt Lewellyn of The Black Casebook, Tropical Doves, Jim Locatelli, jprestonpoole, Lohik, bernventers, Owen2, and Ronnie Gardocki (who I now know is a character from The Shield).
This week, we review Gremlins (1984), Joe Dante's darkly comic Christmas horror classic that blends creature-feature chaos with suburban satire. Zach Galligan stars as Billy, a small-town teen whose mysterious new pet, Gizmo, comes with three simple rules—rules that, once broken, unleash a horde of mischievous monsters on his hometown. With its mix of practical effects, slapstick violence, and eerie holiday cheer, the film explores themes of consumerism, responsibility, and the unintended consequences of curiosity. Is Gremlins a cautionary tale wrapped in tinsel or just pure festive mayhem? In which the Mister joins me in reviewing GREMLINS (1984), from a script by Chris Columbus, the film is directed by Joe Dante. When a struggling inventor (Hoyt Axton) buys a mysterious, adorable creature called a Mogwai as a Christmas gift for his son Billy (Zach Galligan), he is warned of three strict rules: keep it away from bright light, don't get it wet, and never feed it after midnight. After the rules are inevitably broken, the creature spawns a brood of mischievous, scaly monsters that begin a violent and chaotic rampage through the idyllic town of Kingston Falls. As the town's holiday celebrations turn into a nightmare, Billy and his girlfriend Kate (Phoebe Cates) must track down the malevolent leader, Stripe (Frank Welker), to stop the gremlins before they destroy the entire community. The film clocks in at 1 h and 46 m, is rated PG and it's currently streaming on Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, AMC+ and to rent/buy on Prime Video. For Episode 121 don't bother calling the repairman, checking the closets, or looking under the bed, there's definitely GREMLINS in your house! In fact, they're everywhere! Discover why this film may have ruined Christmas for the guys, what makes Spielberg an artistic deviant, and why the world owes Joe Dante an apology. So put on the comfy pajamas with STRIPES, tune in on your favorite GIZMO, and listen today. The chimney's kind of tight, but we saved you a spot…
In 1984, producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante brought a new breed of cuddly creatures to the big screen, hoping to draw in fans of other odd critters like Yoda and E.T. The star of this film is the adorable "mogwai" (Chinese for "devil") named Gizmo, who propagates some very odd offspring that terrorize a small town on Christmas Eve. Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters, this horror-comedy was a hit with audiences, earning $212 million on an $11 million budget. The flick spawned a 1990 sequel, subtitled The New Batch, and a TV series, with a forthcoming third film, Secrets of the Mogwai, in the works. On the merchandising side, the Gizmo plush became an instant hit as one of the top toys of Christmas '84. And, of course, there were plenty of knock-offs, from Critters, to Munchies, to Ghoulies. Perhaps most notably, the film's violence and gore, packaged in family-friendly wrapping paper, led to the creation of a new MPAA rating category: PG-13. But forty-one years later, are we still going gaga for Gremlins? Or have these vicious vermin overstayed their welcome like unruly in-laws at the holidays? This Week in Horror History is your winter horror watchlist, breaking down Christmas horror movies, winter thrillers, and classic ghost stories for the week of November 26–December 2. In this episode of the Weekly Spooky horror podcast, host Henrique Couto revisits Misery (1990), Scrooge / A Christmas Carol (1951), Violent Night (2022), deep-cut sequel The Descent Part 2 (2009), and cult anthology Deadtime Stories (1986) to help you build the perfect cold-weather horror marathon. We start in the snow with Misery (1990), Rob Reiner's adaptation of Stephen King's cabin-fever nightmare. A bestselling author crashes in a blizzard and wakes up trapped with his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, whose devotion turns surgical. It's tense, wintry, and weirdly cozy in that “stuck inside with the storm howling outside” way—perfect for the dark days after Thanksgiving. How to watch (U.S.): You can see it for free on Tubi, or rent it wherever you like to do that sort of thing. Then we slide straight into holiday hauntings with Scrooge / A Christmas Carol (1951), one of the most iconic Christmas ghost stories ever filmed. Alastair Sim's Ebenezer Scrooge is dragged through past, present, and a terrifying future by rattling chains, graveyards, and skeletal specters. It's gothic, eerie, and still strangely comforting—a reminder that Christmas horror began with moral dread and vengeful spirits long before killer Santas. How to watch (U.S.): You can watch it free on Tubi, on Plex, or wherever you rent your movies. From there we jump to modern holiday carnage with Violent Night (2022), where Santa picks up a sledgehammer and goes to war with mercenaries during a Christmas Eve hostage situation. It's loud, cathartic, funny, and surprisingly sweet at its core—ideal Black Friday recovery viewing when you want bloody Christmas action, tinsel, and a very bad night for the naughty list. How to watch (U.S.): It's streaming on Peacock, or you can snag it anywhere you rent digital movies. The Deep Cut Spotlight crawls underground with The Descent Part 2 (2009), the much-maligned cave sequel that deserves another look. Sarah is dragged out of the caves amnesiac and traumatized, only to be pressured into leading a rescue team back into the darkness. What follows is a brutal, grim follow-up packed with creatures that feel a little too plausible—perfect “cozy nightmare fuel” as you settle into your turkey coma and wonder what's lurking just beyond your flashlight beam. How to watch (U.S.): It's free to watch on Plex, or rentable wherever you normally pick up digital horror movies. To cap the episode, Henrique recommends Deadtime Stories (1986), a trashy, off-the-wall horror anthology movie that leans into fairy-tale weirdness and late-night TV vibes. It feels tailor-made for cold-weather sleepovers: campy, bizarre, and just dangerous enough to feel like you shouldn't be watching it right before bed.How to watch (U.S.): You can watch it free on TubiTV, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Fandango at Home Free, and Plex, or with a subscription on Amazon Prime Video and Sling TV.Along the way, we roll through the Birthday Roll, raising a drumstick to horror favorites like Peter Facinelli, Joe Dante, and Nestor Carbonell, and talk about how Christmas horror has evolved—from the moral reckoning of Scrooge to Santa as bruised action hero and the creeping dread of being trapped, whether you're snowed in or sealed underground. If you're hunting for winter horror movies and Christmas horror classics to plug into your December calendar, this week's horror history has you covered. This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth — ultra-soft, temperature-regulating bamboo sheets, comforters, and loungewear that keep you warm without overheating while you binge scary movies.
"They're here already! You're next! You're next! You're next!" The Cold War Cinema team returns to discuss the 1956 sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Something is off in the sleepy little town of Santa Mira, California. As residents begin worrying that their family and friends no longer seem to be who they say they are, Dr. Miles Bennell and his former flame Becky Driscoll slowly uncover an alien plot to replace every person on earth with otherworldly duplicates. Directed by Don Siegel (Riot on Cell Block 11, Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz) and written by Daneil Mainwaring (Out of the Past), and with uncredited work by blacklisted screenwriter Richard Collins (Song of Russia), Invasion explores myriad maladies in midcentury American culture. Join hosts Jason Christian, Tony Ballas, and Paul T. Klein as we discuss: The many complicated—and often contradictory—political allegories often read into the film from both the left and the right, including anti-communist and anti-conformist messages. The political and discursive handwringing done by Invasion's creative team to distance themselves and the film from its most potent politics. Invasion's other formal and narrative critiques of psychoanalysis, middle-class nuclear family values, professional expertise, and the Hollywood studio system. Why movies are not riddles to be solved. _____________________ We love to give book or film recommendations on the podcast, so here are ours for this episode: Paul recommends Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982, Tommy Lee Wallace). Tony recommends, The Burbs (1989, Joe Dante). Jason recommends No Down Payment (1957, Martin Ritt). _____________________ Like and subscribe to Cold War Cinema, and don't forget to leave us a review! For this year's Halloween theme, the Pink Smoke sets its sights on the mid-80's to early 90's trend of "mischievous little monsters" horror movies modeled after a certain masterpiece by a certain Joe Dante. Is there anything of quality to be found in such creature feature cash grabs? Do any cinematic critters, ghoulies, munchies or hobgoblins break the mold of the Gremlins template and discover their own identity? Is there any joy to be had in the low budget exploits of tiny varmints terrorizing people in small towns, big cities, carnivals, universities and outer space? We demand answers. Show us your goobers! Steven Spielberg tried his hand at a Twilight Zone-ish series in 1985 that didn't exactly set the ratings world on fire, but would prove to be formative for a whole generation of imaginative kids. Amazing Stories brought in a combination of seasoned pros like Scorsese and Clint Eastwood and exciting, young talent, including today's guest, writer and filmmaker Mick Garris. Mick became famous for his Stephen King adaptations like The Stand and The Shining mini-series, but it was Steven Spielberg who gave him his first shot, first writing a few episodes on the first season of Amazing Stories, and then acting as head writer overseeing all the scripts coming in before eventually giving him a chance at directing an episode in Season 2.
