How to Survive is on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod It's episode 216...and I’m running away from myself, I guess. Doctor Sleep (2019) is Mike Flanagan's sequel to Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining, but also an adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep, itself a sequel to Stephen King's The Shining, but one that disavows the changes made by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, changes that Mike Flanagan reinstates in his Doctor Sleep, in order to serve as a sequel to both The Shining and The Shining. Confused? Surprisingly, you won't be, as it's one of the best horror movies of the year. Here's Joey and Chris to discuss, all the film's various Abras and kadabras, astral projections and Overlooks, confirm why you should always wear your seatbelt no matter how many centuries old you are, and most importantly, ask how on Earth they managed to make what is a quite excellent film against all the odds. All of which leads to one important question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: The world is a hungry place, and a dark place. Next week, it's Animated Horror season for one week only, with the oft-requested Coraline (2009). Get in touch! HowtoSurviveShow@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter! @HowToSurvivePod
It's the long unawaited sequel of the year this week on Media Ghouls as we present our review of Doctor Sleep! Justin and Ian definitely have a lot to say about Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining sequel. The performances are fantastic but there are a lot of choices that the Ghouls find confusing and/or outright troubling. Ian makes a case for why the film is not scary at all. Justin points out how the story has more in common with the superhero genre than horror.

Chris & Kelsey watch one of the greatest horror movies of all time based on one of the greatest books written by one of the greatest horror authors of all time! And then we see the 4 1/2 hour miniseries adaptation that the King likes better! The "Original": The Shining (1980) "A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future” (IMDb.com). Stanley Kubrick made what is, in Chris' opinion, his best film with The Shining, but how many points does it lose for being a notoriously bad adaptation? The "Remake": Stephen King's The Shining (1997) "A recovering alcoholic must wrestle with demons within and without when he and his family move into a haunted hotel as caretakers” (IMDb.com). ABC's miniseries is much more faithful to the book, having been written by the man himself, but does its accuracy hurt its potential as good television? Get more at podsematary.com! THIS EPISODE IS RATED R. NOT FOR YOUNGER OR MORE SENSITIVE LISTENERS. Of all the various specters that fill history's supernatural lore, none terrify us more than the ghosts of dead children. From the twin girls standing in the hotel's hallway in Stephen King's The Shining, to the alien children with all-black eyes begging to be let inside your car, to the Douens of folklore in the jungles of Trinidad with their backward feet and faces as smooth and blank as eggs, we are obsessed in our terror of creepy dead children. Why is that? In this cold January episode of Hist-eerie, we'll explore one reason why the world history of ghost children never fails to freeze our blood...the haunting sense of parental guilt. **HOW YOU CAN HELP CREATE MORE HIST-EERIE!**Monthly sponsorships as low as $1 on Patreon.com: https://www.patreon.com/Hist_eerieOne-time donations as low as $2 via Paypal to diane@Hist-eerie.com. Jim Heskett was born in the wilds of Oklahoma, raised by a pack of wolves with a station wagon and a membership card to the local public swimming pool. He fell in love with writing at the age of fourteen with a copy of Stephen King's The Shining. Poetry became his first outlet for teen angst, then later screenplays, and eventually, short fiction and long fiction as a hybrid author. In between, he worked a few careers that never successfully tickled his creative toes, and hasn't ever forgotten about Stephen King. On this edition - we stay at the Stanley Hotel, one of America's most haunted locations. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado is best known as the inspiration for Stephen King's The Shining. It's gilded age origin, and lore paired with its distinctly elevated location makes it feel like the quintessential haunted hotel. Paranormal Investigator Connor Randall has a "3" tattooed on his wrist. It symbolizes the three hearts he's had. The one he was born with, and the two that were donated. Karl Pheiffer broke out as a "para-celeb" when he won Ghost Hunter's Academy. A reality TV spin-off to the popular Ghost Hunter's television series. Long before the two would work together at the Stanley, making friends with spirits and guiding tourists through dark ballrooms in search of disembodied voices, Connor would root for Karl on TV. Having not yet met each other but both being from Colorado it was a natural choice. Are people, like places, haunted? Do we carry spirits with us and if so, can we communicate with them? We experiment with cutting-edge techniques and tools in my 4th-floor room to search for the answer to those questions. Top 5 Most Haunted Hotels & Inns From Around The World For most of us when we travel or go on vacation, the last thing we want to experience are ghosts or any sort of paranormal activity. Hauntings are a peculiar phenomenon and while they can happen anytime and anywhere, they’re most often found in buildings that have a long history of sadness, violence and murder. These are the top five most haunted hotels and inns from around the world. 5. Banff Springs Hotel Dubbed as the "Castle in the Rockies," The Banff Springs Hotel has hosted celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and royalty like Queen Elizabeth. While it's luxurious rooms and stunning sweeping views of Alberta Cananda are often praised, the structure has also become known for something else - its resident ghosts. Built in the 19th century, the Banff first opened its doors on June 1, 1888. It was a success, as rich European adventurers loved the idea of living in luxury while staying in the middle of the wilderness. Over time, so many guests have come and gone but there are some who apparently never left. 4. The Skirrid Inn Claiming to be one of the oldest pubs in Wales, The Skirrid Inn has stood its ground for over 900 years. While some people think it's an exaggeration and most likely the current building is a 17th century construction, the spot is known as a Pilgrim's trail and most likely before even the current building was built, an older inn had occupied the same spot years before. Regardless of the specifics, there's one thing that locals and those who have visited agree on – the Skirrid Inn is one of the most haunted inns that exists. 3. Akasaka Weekly Mansion Despite being a modern building, the Akasaka Weekly Mansion is one of the most famous haunted buildings in Japan today. Paranormal experts can't pinpoint any history as to why the hotel would be haunted but guests have reported so many paranormal incidents on the premises that it's hard to ignore. Building 1 of the hotel is especially active and said to have had multiple suicides, which could be the reason why restless spirits lurk in the building. 2. The Stanley Hotel Opening its doors in 1909, The Stanley Hotel has had been functioning for over a century. While it was a prominent and revolutionary hotel during its era, in modern times it's more well known for being the real life "Overlook Hotel" from Stephen King's The Shining. King himself cites the hotel as the main inspiration for his horror masterpiece. The Stanley Hotel was built by inventor, Freelan Oscar Stanley which he ran together with his wife, Flora. After falling in love with Estes Park and attributing his recovery from tuberculosis while staying there, he vowed to create a luxurious resort in the area. Eventually he began building the property in 1907 and by 1909, it was ready to welcome visitors. Stanley not only transformed Estes Park and the nearby towns but he also helped create Rocky Mountain National Park, but it was the Stanley Hotel that would be his lasting legacy. 1. Ancient Ram Inn Haunted by more than 20 ghosts, the Ancient Ram Inn is said to be one of the most haunted inns in all of Britain. 1. Ancient Ram Inn Haunted by more than 20 ghosts, the Ancient Ram Inn is said to be one of the most haunted inns in all of Britain. The Inn has changed ownership several times since it was first built in 1145 - but the stories always remain the same. No, not THAT The Shining. That was The Shining. This is STEPHEN KING'S The Shining. Stephen King was famously displeased with Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of his book about hotels and the souls they devour. Apparently King felt that 17 years was all it took for the public to forget one of the most beloved horror films of all time, and set about EPing a miniseries adaptation of his classic novel. Directed by Mick Garris, and starring Steven Weber and Rebecca de Mornay as Jack and Wendy Torrence, Stephen King's The Shining is a trip into the valley of the uncanny and then the mountain of exposition. Also in this episode: a very earnest, very prolonged bath hag discussion.
