In this special episode of Oxford Lives we interview one of the city's first families: the Fryers. Phil and Pete Fryer have been at the forefront of the Oxford music scene for over fifty years, both as performers and promoters. But their story really starts when their father Bobby (born Robert Freisinger) fled his native Austria in 1938, taking the Kindertransport to Great Britain. After a stint with the Scottish Regiment, which included acting as a translator during interrogations of Nazi officers, Bobby returned to Britain and met his wife, Margaret. Following a brief period living in Wales, the couple moved to Oxford, with Bobby taking a job at the Morris Motors factory. He rose to become the leading shop steward and a highly effective union leader, admired by fellow workers and respected by management. A highly cultured and principled man, Bobby passed his values onto his sons, as they grew up on the Florence Park estate. By their mid-teens, the boys had discovered their true passion, music, which they pursue to this day. In this episode, Phil and Pete talk about their father's legacy, their roller coaster musical journey, and how it all came together in Phil's play The Free Singer, which explores their unique family history. In this enthralling narrative a conflict erupts between the forces of flavour and imperfection (represented by the prophets Frank and Glen the Fryer) and the forces of order and blandness (led by the metaphysical entity Softly, the Adverb, and the Bureau of Blandness). Host: Chris FletcherGuests:Liz McKinnon – Strategic Accounts, Sky Business (13+ years at Sky)Jatin Chandwani – Chief Product & Growth Officer, Byte by Yum (overseeing KFC, Taco Bell, Habit Burger & Pizza Hut's SaaS platform)Recorded live on stage, this episode dives deep into how reliable connectivity has become the backbone of modern hospitality operations — from QSR chains to stadia. The conversation covers how real-time data, AI-driven automation, and seamless guest experiences are all dependent on getting the fundamentals of connectivity right.1. The Three C's of Connectivity (Liz McKinnon)Coverage – ensuring your restaurant has signal everywhere it needsCapacity – handling the growing volume of data trafficConnectivity – making it fit for purpose and reviewing it continuously, not just at install2. Connectivity as a Data Continuity Engine (Jatin Chandwani)Connectivity has evolved from a utility (like water or electricity) to a mission-critical data pipelineWithout it, team members work blind and guest experience suffers immediatelyDigital orders (mobile app, aggregators, kiosks) can make up 30–60% of revenue — all dependent on connectivity3. Speed, Taste & Experience in QSRThe challenge of serving fresh food (e.g. KFC's 15-min cook time) to customers who expect it in 2 minutesTechnology and data forecasting are key to managing this tensionAI forecasting for inventory and labor scheduling has delivered measurable improvements4. Real-Time Data & Agentic AIMoving from "dashboard era" (acting on yesterday's data) to agentic workflows (acting within the shift)Fryer data, hot-hold systems, sales data and customer data combined = next best action in real timeProperly connected stores can improve performance by 10–20%Kill switches and guardrails are essential — AI governance must be built in from day one, not added later5. Guest WiFi as a Business Channel"Snacking data" — QSR customers connect briefly; stadia customers stay for hours; both need seamless WiFiGuest connectivity supports app check-ins, order status, and acquisition/retentionWiFi splash pages can drive promotions, loyalty sign-ups, and personalized messaging6. Good consent builds long-term customer relationships." — Jatin ChandwaniGDPR is not a constraint — it's a trust engineSky supports customers with a robust framework to handle data collection properlyTargeted, meaningful consent leads to better, more relevant customer conversations7. Taylor Scott is a hospitality lifer turned leadership coach who cut his teeth at Walt Disney World, led sales at Disney Vacation Club, and earned his MBA from Cornell's Hotel School. He's the author of Lead with Hospitality and the leadership fable Give Hospitality, translating world-class service principles into practical playbooks for teams. Susan and Taylor talk about connection, culture, and coaching. What You'll Learn About: • Why "don't reply to everything" is terrible leadership advice. • How sales and leadership mirror each other: build trust fast, influence behavior faster. • The Connect–Serve–Engage–Inspire framework you can run on a busy lobby shift. • LEAD as a service checklist: Listen, Educate, Act, Deliver. • The mindset shift from SOP security blanket to entrepreneurial trial-and-error. • Grad school's real ROI: "building shelves" in your brain + a global network. • How to lead high achievers with the 3 C's: Choice, Competence, Community. • "Guest first, team always" and "Purpose over policy" as decision filters. • Turning fear-based flailing (hello, mushroom panic) into guest-centered choices. • Why the next leadership frontier is re-teaching human connection in an AI world. Our Top Three Takeaways 1. Leadership and Sales Share the Same Core: Connection and Influence Taylor makes the case that sales is leadership, and leadership is sales. In both roles, success depends on making people trust and like you quickly, then inspiring them to take action. His "Lead with Hospitality" framework — Connect, Serve, Engage, Inspire — provides a clear path for achieving this in daily operations: connect with people on a human level, serve them first, engage with generosity and purpose, and inspire them through storytelling and authenticity. 2. The Best Leaders Create Environments for Motivation Drawing from the self-determination theory, Taylor explains that people become self-motivated when they experience choice, competence, and community — his "three C's." High achievers, in particular, thrive when leaders give them autonomy, recognize their expertise, and foster a sense of belonging. Leadership isn't about control; it's about designing the conditions where people can thrive. 3. Purpose Over Policy: Leading with Humanity From his experiences at Disney and Cosmopolitan, Taylor emphasizes two enduring leadership mantras: "Guest first, team always" and "Purpose over policy." Great leaders prioritize people and purpose over rigid rules, empowering teams to make guest-centered decisions. As hospitality evolves with AI and generational change, Taylor predicts the next frontier of leadership will be relearning how to connect on a human level — teaching empathy, conversation, and connection in an increasingly digital world. When Lyrik Fryer built WorkPlay Branding, she wasn't necessarily trying to be disruptive — she just didn't want to keep living in the adrenaline crash around the revenue model that comes with project-based work. So she did the thing no one else in her industry was doing: she swapped one-off client projects for a high-ticket, yearlong membership model that now meets clients anywhere in the world. But what looks effortless from the outside was built on systems, spreadsheets, and a ruthless commitment to structure. In this conversation, we get into how she engineered consistency and how she used systems to create freedom and high profit margins. In this throwback episode of Very Clinical, Zach and Kevin welcome back Charlie Fryer to talk about AI in dentistry. Charlie recently finished a master's thesis about class II caries and AI so he can see applications in dentistry from the perspective of a computer scientist. AI's Current Role in the Dental Industry The guys discuss existing and potential applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in dentistry, acknowledging that the future of the profession will be heavily influenced by this technology. Invisalign/Aligners: Kevin notes that companies like Align Technology (Invisalign) are essentially data companies that leverage millions of intraoral scans from iTero to perfect tooth-movement algorithms and quickly generate treatment plans. He suspects much of the initial clin-check setup is AI-driven, with human checks afterward. Design & Manufacturing: AI is already used for the automated design and quick file return for appliances like night guards by companies like SprintRay, as well as for crown design in some printing workflows. Radiographic Diagnosis: The hosts discuss companies that use AI to read and assist in diagnosing findings on X-rays. A key discussion point is how these companies, like DSOs (Dental Service Organizations) such as Heartland or Aspen, acquire the vast amounts of patient data needed to train their models. The hosts posit that users become the "product," providing data with every image analyzed. Future AI Applications and Benefits The conversation shifts to more future-facing applications and the overall impact of AI on dental practice. Net Positive Impact: Zach and Kevin agree that AI will be a net positive for dentistry, primarily as an aid rather than a replacement for clinical judgment, drawing an analogy to how a GPS system advises a driver but the driver still makes the final decisions. Combining Data Sets: Charlie suggests combining various patient data, such as cone beam CTs, intraoral scans, and radiographic images, to develop next-generation tools for complex procedures like implant placement guidance. Practice Optimization: A major area for AI development is practice management. They discuss using machine learning to: Optimize scheduling based on patient history (recurrent neural networks) and procedure mix to maximize profitability and account for unexpected needs. Forecast inventory needs to ensure the practice is always adequately stocked. Financial and Marketing Tools: Patient Financing: Kevin highlights Sun Bit, a payment program that uses an AI component to quickly determine a patient's payment risk and rate by analyzing non-traditional data like utility payments instead of a full credit report. Marketing: AI is already effective in predicting click-through rates for online advertisements, which could be leveraged by dental practices. Join the Very Clinical Facebook group! Charlie, a chemical engineer with a background in data science from Georgia Tech, explains the immense, data-intensive challenges of using a deep learning model to create an objective diagnostic tool for Class II decay from bite-wing X-rays. Thank you Katie for requesting this case!On the evening of November 17th, 1973, five teenage friends decided to head to the Gitchie Manitou State Preserve located in the far northwestern corner of Iowa. Most of the parents of those teenagers knew where the kids were going that night and didn't think much about it. It was a pretty standard hang-out spot. As the kids were sitting around a campfire enjoying the cold evening, three figures came out of the darkness and opened fire.Five teenagers went into the reserve on that fateful night.
