In this episode, Nathalie and Emerald talk about the importance of gut bacteria to our overall health. Nathalie introduces her new vitiligo healing experiment with turmeric. Show notes: Lactobacillus is a type of ‘good’ bacteria found in yogurt, among other foods. The role of the gut microbiome — the bacteria which live in our gut — has become a focus of research interest recently. The researchers found a mechanism for how this change in the gut led to depression (it is through a metabolite called kynurenine). Simply put, ‘your brain spurts happy chemicals which reward you with good feelings when you do something it perceives as good for your survival’. We have two different brain systems – the limbic system and the cortex – which keep us alive and protect our DNA. The limbic system produces the neurochemicals that tell your body what’s good or bad for you. It’s a survival mechanism: in the presence of something good, the brain releases four main ‘feel-good’ chemicals – endorphin, oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine – and in the presence of danger, the ‘bad feeling’ chemical – cortisol – comes in. Oxytocin is the ‘bonding’ chemical. Endorphin is nature’s pain relief – it’s stimulated by pain. Dopamine helps us release the energy we need to get the rewards we want Serotonin How to increase serotonin in the human brain without drugs The idea that alterations in thought, either self-induced or due to psychotherapy, can alter brain metabolism is not new- like meditation. Exposure to bright light is a second possible approach to increasing serotonin without drugs. A third strategy that may raise brain serotonin is exercise. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2077351/ Gut bacteria may hold key to treating autoimmune disease Defects in the body's regulatory T cells (T reg cells) cause inflammation and autoimmune disease by altering the type of bacteria living in the gut, researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have discovered. T reg cells suppress the immune system and prevent it from attacking the body's own tissues by mistake. Defects in T reg cells therefore lead to various types of autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases can also be caused by changes in the gut microbiome, the population of bacteria that reside within the gastrointestinal tract. The researchers discovered that by feeding the mice with Lactobacillus reuteri, they could "reset" the gut bacterial community and reduce the levels of inflammation, significantly extending the animals' survival. Newly reported on May 8, 2018, according to a new Yale study, researchers also found that the autoimmune reaction can be suppressed with an antibiotic or vaccine designed to target the bacteria In models of genetically susceptible mice, the researchers observed that in tissues outside the gut, E. gallinarum initiated the production of auto-antibodies and inflammation -- hallmarks of the autoimmune response. They confirmed the same mechanism of inflammation in cultured liver cells of healthy people, and the presence of this bacterium in livers of patients with autoimmune disease. "Treatment with an antibiotic and other approaches such as vaccination are promising ways to improve the lives of patients with autoimmune disease," he said Research sources: https://www.psychologies.co.uk/self/how-to-boost-your-natural-feelgood-chemicals.html https://www.spring.org.uk/2017/03/probiotics-depression.php https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2016-12/rup-gbm121516.php https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/03/180308143102.htm Show notes here: https://vitiligocover.com/vitiligo-voices-importance-of-gut-bacteria-to-overall-health-s4e2/

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Nathalie discusses an email from someone who has tried the ginger root juice experiment, and from someone else who has done uvb laser treatments. Show Notes: Ginger Root Experiment to repigment vitiligo: Excerpt from email- I have been using fresh ginger for 15 weeks, and I am perfectly honest when I tell anyone who will listen: THIS WORKS. IT WORKS, I PROMISE. The catch? You've got to be religious about it. For the first 8 weeks there was absolutely no difference. Kept doing it, twice a day. After about 12 weeks I noticed a tiny patch in the very middle of one of the hypo pigmented patches that was normal colored, tan like the rest of me. The tan patch has slowly gotten bigger, and other tan patches have popped up as well. It seems to be pretty random, but it's getting better every day. The white patches are almost gone. I wish everyone else the same success that I've enjoyed, just remember that you need to do it EVERY day (it has a cumulative effect), and for a long time. At almost 4 months it still isn't completely back to normal, but it's close. NOTE: I did not juice. I cut slices off of fresh ginger and passed them over my hypo pigmented patches. I can't see why it wouldn't work to juice, and it may work better! Just thought I'd be clear about what I did to get my results Vitiligo stories: Share your story about vitiligo. You'll feel good to get your feelings off your chest and onto paper (so to speak) and more importantly, you'll help someone else with vitiligo feel like they're not alone! http://vitiligocover.com/read-the-stories/ Do you have a story to share about living with vitiligo? New positive effects of ginkgo biloba on vitiligo are learned when Nathalie talks with Dr. Orest Szczurko, from the Noumena Naturopathic Health & Wellness Centre in Toronto, Canada, about his clinical trials testing the results of ginkgo biloba to cure and/or prompt repigmentation to the white patches of vitiligo. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Sponsored by: Vitiligo Cover Lotion https://vitiligocover.com Show Notes: Here are the links to the clinical trials, please click on the free full text article in PubMed central button in the top right corner. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18498646 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21406109 Dr. Orest Szczurko's Contact: www.noumena.ca Read about Dr. Orest Szczurko's approach to the treatment of vitiligo: New positive effects of ginkgo biloba on vitiligo http://noumena.ca/advice/vitiligo/ As virtually everyone in the vitiligo research community agrees, vitiligo is caused at least in part by the immune system attacking melanocytes, the pigment forming cells in the skin (Whitton). Thus, the first part of a successful approach to treating vitiligo is to identify what is irritating the immune system. That is, what is causing it to become overstimulated and what is causing it to attack the body’s own melanocytes. Research does not have many of the answers to this yet, but clinical experience and several research papers point to some foods as triggers of the immune system (Seyhan), some potential environmental factors (Nordlund), and emotional stress (Whitton). There is also a possible hormone connection as noted in the Ginkgo biloba for vitiligo published report (Szczurko, 2011), but research evidence is just starting to come out about this (Schallreuter, Jin). Food allergy and sensitivity testing will be elaborated on in a future posting, but the ELISA IgE Food Antibody Pannel done routinely at my office is a very useful tool for identifying food sensitivities or allergies, as is very regimented and focused food avoidance and reintroduction. Once the immune system triggers are identified and addressed the second step to my naturopathic treatment of vitiligo is to support the body. There is a large amount of published research reporting on effective ways of calming the immune system including fish oils, acupuncture, deep breathing exercises, acupuncture, and many others. Certain nutrients can be low in patients with vitiligo, and at therapeuitic doses these vitamins, minerals, amino acids and herbs have been shown to help patients with vitiligo (Szczurko, 2008). These immune calming and supporting options must be evaluated on a case by case basis and prescribed as appropriate for the individual patient. The goal of steps one and two is to calm the autoimmune reaction that is leading to the spread of vitiligo. Once this is achieved, and the results are confirmed by vitiligo lesions that have been stable for a few months, the third step of the treatment of vitiligo can be initiated: repigmentation. Repigmentation of vitiligo is best achieved by phototherapy, either narrow band UVB (nbUVB) or psoralen with UVA (PUVA). Some debate as to the best method is still ongoing (Wind, El-Mofty), but my preference at this time is nbUVB. Several studies report effectiveness of the regulated and regimented use of sunlight to induce repigmentation, which I have also found to be effective and safe when done correctly. It is important to point out that there are several scientific reports of vitiligo returning to the same repigmented lesions after phototherapy has been discontinued (Nicolaidou). I am sure this happens more often than is reported, since most studies do not do a follow up after completing the trial. This occurs because the treatment is often done backwards: repigmentation is often the first step in the treatment of vitiligo, having completely bypassed the systemic immune overreaction (topical application of cortisone or tacrolimus addresses the immune system at the skin where the lotion is applied, but not systemically – new vitiligo usually appears in new areas in those patients). This systemic overreaction of the immune system to melanocytes is overwhelmed by the photherapy, or potentially paused for a while, but as soon as the phototherapy stops the immune system goes right back to attacking the melanocytes it was attacking. The treatment approach outlined above: first by identifying the cause of the autoimmunity, then supporting the bodys immune system and specific vitiligo and patient related needs followed by repigmentation only after the immune system has calmed down has been safe and effective in many of my patients who present to me for treatment of their vitiligo. Living with vitiligo in itself is very stressful; it changes our self-image and we are always self-conscious of the white patches that adorn our skin. Now imagine knowing that the way your body and mind deals with stress may actually play a role in triggering vitiligo. This is the dilemma facing every person living with vitiligo which, in turn, may become emotionally debilitating. In this week’s episode, Nathalie will be joined by adjunct Instructor, Joanne Giovanni to discuss the physiological effects of stress and how they may trigger vitiligo and other autoimmune diseases. Joanne will also share simple techniques which can be used to reduce stressors and their negative effects on your body. For over 18 years, Joanne Giovanni has been teaching stress management classes at the St.Louis Community Colleges and has been a guest lecturer and meditation leader for local organizations.
