“Questions, concerns, queries?” Lets chat! Its all by design...Literally.Jack, Lynne and Matt McFarland continue their Landscape Design chat on this week's episode of The Growing Season."95% of all designs need a tree, even on the small designs." Matt discusses why he feels this is the case.We have to bring down the immensity of the house - that's a Mattism.Lilacs, Baby Blue Eyes Spruce, Cumulus Serviceberry and Apollo Sugar Maples feature prominently in this chat. What is a Red Osier Dogwood and why is it important?Jack McFarland sees a fence and gets REALLY excited.  A fence area in shade and Jack dies a little bit. Clematis, morning glory, espaliers and more...  The trio discuss garden mirrors and how to use them.  Matt tells a sci-fi story. Matt's fear of poison plants effects his designs significantly.  Matt won't use Yews.  You's read that right - he won't use Yews. The use of epicurean plants must be designed with caution. Juglans nigra and its insanely effective way of reducing competition is discussed. The legendary Ginkgo biloba comes into focus. Daphne, Buckthorn, Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Poison Sumac are some plants to look out for. Everything is poisonous - what? What's better than one Contorted Corkscrew Hazel? 14!!!The show ends with a moment of silence. Tune in. Looking to book a consult for your property?  We'd love to help.  CLICK HERE.What is a TGS Tiny Garden? 303: Why Microcirculation Matters

The Clinical Entrepreneur

What if one of the biggest reasons your patients are not improving has less to do with the protocol itself… and more to do with whether oxygen, nutrients, and support can actually reach the tissue? In this episode, I'm unpacking why microcirculation deserves far more attention in clinical practice. These tiny vessels, the arterioles, capillaries, and venules, are where the bloodstream meets the cell. This is where oxygen and nutrients are delivered, waste is carried away, and healing begins. And if that system is compromised, progress can stall. We talk about why microcirculation may belong right alongside digestion, blood sugar balance, liver support, and the other core areas we tend to think about first. I walk through the patient patterns that should raise a red flag, including diabetes, hypertension, chronic stress, smoking history, sedentary habits, visual changes, cold hands and feet, edema, heavy legs, slow wound healing, and fatigue with exertion. I'm also sharing Kerry Bone's simple 5-point food strategy for supporting microcirculation: beets, berries, dark chocolate, raw garlic, and green tea. And we touch on a few targeted herbs that may offer additional support, including Gotu Kola, Bilberry, Hawthorne, Ginkgo, and Cyruta. If you've had patients who are doing many of the right things and still not progressing the way you'd expect, this episode may shift how you think about what needs support first. Also, this is the final episode being released on traditional podcast platforms. Starting next week, new episodes will be shared on YouTube. Same content, same teaching, just in a new place. Resources: Listen to my brand-new microcirculation training inside Clinical Academy where you'll find my full microcirculation framework, herbal and nutritional protocols, and intake assessment tools Just getting started or feeling overwhelmed with where to start with a new patient? Some of the most meaningful conversations happen when two experienced homeopaths simply sit down and talk, and that's exactly what unfolds between Jane and Wiet. As close colleagues with a shared interest in the human psyche and healing, they explore health as more than symptom relief—touching on connection to the body, nature, and the wider influences that shape disease, including transgenerational and collective factors. Their discussion moves through remedy relationships, the roots of vitalism inspired by Paracelsus, practitioner ethics, and the delicate balance between intuition and emerging tools like AI and repertory software. They also reflect on themes of Ginkgo biloba and reconsider the idea of fixed constitutional remedies, viewing health instead as a dynamic flow guided by vital intelligence.  Episode Highlights: 05:43 - Trauma and Modern Healing 08:36 - Vitalism Beyond Symptoms 09:41 - Paracelsus and Sources 16:45 - Digitizing Research 18:24 - AI for Scholarship 23:03 - River of Vital Force 24:08 - Practitioner as Catalyst 28:28 - Resonance and Provings 29:38 - Ginkgo and Reconnection 31:44 - Reconnecting Through Tech 33:22 -  Ginkgo for Radiation Sensitivity 35:49 - Soulmates and Opposites 39:05 - Ancient Perspective on Crisis 40:22 - What Comes After Ginkgo 41:43 - Rethinking Sulfur and Constitution 45:34 - Defining Great Health and Flow 48:41 - Genius Shadow and Integration 53:53 - Homeopathy as Contemplation 57:14 - AI and Intuition Balance About my Guests: Jane Tara Cicchetti is an internationally renowned teacher, speaker, and writer with over 35 years of experience in Classical Homeopathy. Jason Kelly founded Ginkgo Bioworks in 2008 with a simple but radical idea: DNA is code, and cells are programmable. Sixteen years later, AI is finally making that vision real in ways that could reshape science itself. Jason describes a landmark collaboration with OpenAI in which a reasoning model with access to a robotic lab beat the state of the art in biochemistry by 40% - not by being smarter than scientists, but by running experiments 24 hours a day and sharing data across a hundred parallel hypotheses simultaneously. He argues that the biggest inefficiency in science isn't intelligence, it's manual labor. Once AI helps scale research, the cost of discovery collapses and breakthroughs follow, with profound implications for biopharma, national competitiveness, and human health.

Synopsis: This episode is proudly sponsored by Quartzy. Biotech is undergoing a scientific redesign, and Jason Kelly reveals to host Alok Tayi how automation, AI-ready datasets, and modular lab technologies are reshaping the future of R&D. Jason explains why legacy biopharma data—messy, inconsistent, and lacking metadata—cannot power modern machine learning, and why the industry must generate entirely new, massively standardized experimental datasets to unlock AI's true potential. He walks through Ginkgo's evolution from platform partnerships to a next-generation CRO built for AI-driven discovery, offering industrialized functional genomics, mammalian engineering, CRISPR libraries, and high-throughput developability assays at unprecedented scale. Jason also describes how Ginkgo's reconfigurable automation systems—robotic building blocks that replace 18-month custom builds—are democratizing high-throughput experimentation and making advanced lab infrastructure as flexible as cloud computing. Together, Jason and Alok explore how the fusion of automation and AI can collapse R&D timelines, rewrite cost structures, and enable thousands of new biotech companies to test ideas faster than ever before. For scientists, engineers, and AI practitioners, this episode offers a compelling look at the new scientific architecture emerging at the intersection of robotics, data, and programmable biology. Biography: Dr. Jason Kelly is the co-founder and CEO of Ginkgo Bioworks. He took the company public and raised $1.6B in the largest US biotech public listing to date in 2021. Today the company is pioneering autonomous labs that accelerate bioengineering across biopharma, agriculture, and industrial biotech industries. Jason also previously served as the Chair of the US National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology which oversees how advancements in emerging biotechnology will shape current and future activities of the US Department of Defense. Prior to Ginkgo, Jason received B.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biology and a PhD in Biological Engineering all from MIT.

Every autumn, Blandy Experimental Farm, home to the Virginia State Arboretum, transforms into a golden wonderland as over 300 ginkgo trees burst into vibrant color. In this episode of Tourism Tuesday on The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sat down with Melanie Mullinax, Communications and Event Manager at Blandy, to discuss the much-anticipated Ginkgo Gold Weekends and the unique experiences awaiting visitors. Ginkgo Gold Weekends: More Than Just Leaves Melanie reveals that the Ginkgo Gold Weekends, held during the last weekend of October and the first weekend of November, have become a highlight for nature lovers across the state. While the main attraction is the breathtaking canopy of golden ginkgo leaves, the event offers much more. Visitors can enjoy food trucks, browse local artisan vendors selling ginkgo-themed jewelry and art, and pick up exclusive souvenirs like canvas bags designed by regional artists. The weekends are designed to be festive yet low-key, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the grove. A Living Laboratory with Deep Roots The conversation delves into the history of Blandy's ginkgo grove, which was planted nearly a century ago as part of a scientific experiment. Melanie explains that the original trees were brought from Charlottesville to study propagation and gender distribution, resulting in today's perfectly balanced grove of male and female trees. This scientific legacy continues to inform the educational mission of the farm, with “ginkgo guides” on hand during the event to answer visitors' questions about the trees and their unique characteristics. Community Engagement and Lasting Memories Blandy's Ginkgo Gold Weekends are not just about admiring the scenery—they're about building community. The popular Ginkgo tree sponsorship program allows visitors to “adopt” a tree, complete with a personalized tag and a photo opportunity. Volunteers play a crucial role in making the weekends a success, from helping with sponsorships and souvenirs to guiding guests and ensuring accessibility for all. Tips for the Perfect Visit For those seeking a quieter experience, Melanie suggests visiting the grove on weekdays, when the crowds thin and the atmosphere becomes serene. She also shares practical advice, such as wearing appropriate footwear to avoid the infamous ginkgo fruit scent and taking advantage of the farm's accessible paths for those with mobility needs. Beyond Autumn: Holiday Traditions at Blandy As the golden leaves fall, Blandy shifts gears to its beloved holiday wreath workshops, a tradition spanning over 40 years. Melanie encourages listeners to become members of the State Arboretum for early registration and other perks, noting that membership supports the farm's ongoing operations and educational programs. A Must-See Virginia Tradition Janet and Melanie's conversation paints a vivid picture of Ginkgo Gold Weekends as a celebration of nature, community, and tradition. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning fan, Blandy Experimental Farm offers a magical autumn experience that lingers long after the last leaf has fallen.

Espaliers are the first out of the gate. Squirrels and apple trees are a highlight. Baseball and apples.  What!?Blueberries have been tough for The Growing Season to grow.  Matt discusses. Shade/light conditions play a huge role in the success of plants. Sugar Maples and their smaller cousins become a topic of note.  Is there a "semi-dwarf" sugar maple? Hint, hint... The answer is yes. Imagine If You Will and Ghostbusters... The Ginkgo tops off the first half of the show. A globe blue spruce is the best way to spend $300 of your horticultural money. Matt HATES Forsythia and he tells you why. The 80's figure into the show and Matt relishes the use of 80's music to drive the point home. Hydrangeas have been miniaturized.  So have Smokebush - much to the happiness of many.  Perennial geraniums are some of the most well-behaved, contained little mounders in your garden. Yellow coneflowers are compared to Black Eyed Susans. DELPHINIUMS CAN GET REALLY BIG!Why plant miniatures!? We want to share perspectives of both traditional and contemporary herbal practice, so people can understand these are “good for” more than just what's on their labels. It's too easy for herbs to be boxed in to smaller and smaller ranges of application when they're commercialized. This is an antidote to that movement! For practicing herbalists & clinicians, it's very important to know well those herbs which are most commonly consumed. Your clients will ask you about them, or be taking them before they even visit you – so you've got to know what they do! You might be able to give advice about a better remedy, or a compensation for some effect of the plant. This can help your clients just as much as a new recommendation, so don't neglect it.If you're new to herbalism, this can also serve as an inoculation against “herban legends” and misinformation – which is rampant on today's internet.13. "In just one week, people taking Rhodiola felt less stressed, more focused, and mentally sharper." "Rhodiola was compared to the antidepressant sertraline, also known as Zoloft. While sertraline had stronger effects, Rhodiola had fewer side effects and was better tolerated." "Research shows Rhodiola may enhance memory and learning by helping neurons in the brain communicate better." "OPCs are antioxidants found in blueberries, grapes, and dark chocolate, and they help protect the brain while strengthening the blood-brain barrier." "One study found that drinking blueberry juice, which is rich in OPC flavanols, for 12 weeks improved working memory, blood flow to the brain, and cognitive performance in adults." "Ginkgo and ginseng act like stimulants without the side effects, and studies show they may help improve attention and dopamine levels in kids with ADHD." "Herbs are powerful, even though they're natural. They can interact with medications, so always consult a professional." "There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Functional lab testing can help determine which nutrients and herbs your child actually needs." Dana Kay Resources:

If you're struggling with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) or debilitating tiredness that just won't go away, you're not alone—and you're not imagining things. Millions of people suffer from persistent fatigue that conventional medicine often fails to resolve. Fatigue and stress can make everyday tasks like working at a computer feel overwhelming, as seen in this image, which represents the experience of many with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) At the Hedberg Institute, I'm always researching botanical compounds that support microcirculation, mitochondrial health, and immune regulation—all vital in restoring energy. That's why I formulated VascuSelect, a synergistic supplement that contains three powerful plant extracts: Ginkgo biloba, grape seed extract, and mango whole fruit powder. Let's dive into why Ginkgo biloba, in particular, stands out for those dealing with ME/CFS and how it works alongside other ingredients in VascuSelect to support your energy and vitality. An Important Study: Ginkgo Biloba for ME/CFS A recent paper published in Frontiers in Pharmacology (2022) titled “A Botanical Product Containing Cistanche and Ginkgo Extracts Potentially Improves Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms in Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, and Placebo-Controlled Study” sheds important light on Ginkgo's role in combating chronic fatigue. In this gold-standard clinical trial, 101 adults with ME/CFS received a botanical supplement combining Ginkgo biloba extract (120 mg/day) and Cistanche tubulosa extract (300 mg/day) or a placebo for 60 days. The results were impressive: Significant reductions in fatigue severity Improved physical performance and VO₂ max Enhanced antioxidant status and reduced oxidative stress markers Improved sleep quality and concentration Enhanced quality of life (QOL) and sexual life (SLQ) scores Decreased blood levels of lactic acid and ammonia (both fatigue biomarkers) What's particularly exciting is that Ginkgo biloba played a central role in this formulation. The authors noted that Ginkgo's flavonoids and terpenoids contribute to neuroprotection, vasodilation, and mitochondrial support, all of which are key areas of dysfunction in ME/CFS patients. This study confirms that Ginkgo biloba, known for enhancing blood flow and antioxidant activity, can play a central role in reducing the burdens of ME/CFS. How Ginkgo Biloba Helps Fight Fatigue Ginkgo biloba (standardized to 24% flavonol glycosides and 6% terpenes) is one of the most studied botanical extracts for circulatory and cognitive health. But its applications go far beyond brain support—especially for those with energy-depleting illnesses like ME/CFS. Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest and most studied medicinal plants. It's been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but modern science is now validating its applications for conditions like ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and Long COVID. 1. Improves Microcirculation Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow, especially in the small vessels of the brain and extremities. This is critical in ME/CFS, where impaired oxygen delivery to tissues can worsen fatigue. 2. Supports Mitochondrial Function Many people with ME/CFS experience dysfunctional mitochondria—the energy-producing engines of cells. Ginkgo has been shown to protect mitochondrial membranes and improve ATP production, helping the body generate more usable energy. 3. Reduces Oxidative Stress Oxidative stress is a hallmark of ME/CFS and contributes to inflammation, brain fog, and fatigue. Ginkgo's rich flavonoid profile helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative damage. In the study mentioned above, participants taking Ginkgo and Cistanche showed significant increases in antioxidant enzymes like SOD and CAT. 4. Enhances Neurotransmitter Function Ginkgo biloba modulates neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine—chemicals that regulate mood,

We need to discuss some poisons found in the garden! My goal was to go into the poisons that can be found in the vegetable garden as well as in the flower garden, but I have to make it two parts because I somehow never realize how long I can talk about stuff! Also, Adam has capped my research at 5,000 words per episode as I struggle with stopping anything. Therefore, we are discussing some poisons that can be found in the vegetable gardens around the world. Rhubarb leaves, solanine in potatoes (at least those not stored properly), Cassava, ginkgo biloba seeds, cashews, and more. We have some fun (and some more tragic) stories behind each of these as well as the history and folklore of their growth and use. For instance, we need to talk about that time in WWI when the British government encouraged their citizens to eat rhubarb leaves while food was scarce or why it is not okay to munch on houseplants (I hope we all knew that one, but hey, make sure they are out of reach of children or pets if toxic). How about the guy who worked hard to make the potato popular in France? Did you know potatoes were actually once banned there because it was believed they could cause leprosy or plague? Well, obviously they do not, but when green they can make you very sick.Cassava! It is a staple crop in parts of South America and in Africa, but when not processed correctly, it can be deadly as they contain cyanogenic glycosides. So how do so many people eat it? And have there been any recent cases of poisoning from cassava? Unfortunately, yes.Have you ever seen a cashew tree or its fruit? A story from the Philippines gives a fun explanation for why it looks the way it does. Also, before being processed for eating, they are also poisonous, covered with the same substance that causes the itchy reaction when you touch poison ivy.How about a story concerning the six Gingko trees that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and how their seeds can still cause accidental poisonings today. Also, that Ginkgo leaf extract some people are taking? According to some recent studies, it may not even be helpful. Let's talk about it!Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters!
