What if our obsession with “dangerous” sun is killing us?If you (recklessly) leave your urban office for lunch, you are told to yank your hat down low. If you (again, recklessly) let your kids dash into the backyard, you are told to slather them in sunscreen—or learn to live with the guilt. And yes, sun avoidance undoubtedly prevents some skin cancers, including the deadliest type, melanomaBut a recent study suggests sunlight contributes to hundreds of thousands of deaths every year in the United States alone—orders of magnitude more than the estimated 8400 annual US melanoma deaths. In this episode, we discuss evidence linking sun avoidance toalmost a million annual deaths in the US and Europe alone, exceeding the number caused by global military conflictsbreast, pancreatic, colon, and lung cancers, as well as heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroketo INCREASED risk of death in those diagnosed with sun-induced melanoma.Yes, you read that right; some melanoma deaths may be related to too little sunlight.  (But do understand that this is complex--sunlight DOES cause melanoma. Well, some melanomas....)We also discuss why supplementing with vitamin D pills fails to remedy these terrible conditions, and what a thoughtful person can do instead, while staying safe.We hope you enjoy this episode, and that it helps you enjoy the sun again--thoughtfully, of course. References and further reading:  Sunlight: Time for a Rethink?Benefits of oral Polypodium leucotomas extract in MM high risk patients (This is an ingredient in Life Extension's Shade Factor, mentioned in this episode by Dr. Gordon). Uses of Polypodium leucotomos Extract in Oncodermatology  Calzari et alInsufficient Sun Exposure Has Become a Real Public Health Problem. In this episode, Jon and Adam take a deep dive into one of golf's most feared problems: the shanks. They explain what is actually happening at impact, why many common swing fixes can make the problem worse, and how golfers can use face spray, strike-location practice, and simple constraints to regain control. Adam also breaks down how setup, hand position, body movement, and equipment can influence heel and toe contact—but emphasizes that learning to intentionally move strike around the clubface is often the most effective long-term solution. They also discuss the anxiety these misses can create and why removing emotion, avoiding endless mechanical rabbit holes, and focusing on basic problem-solving can help golfers find their way out. Sunlight feels harmless until you zoom in far enough to see what it's doing inside a single skin cell. Today we follow that path, from UVA and UVB radiation to DNA damage, then through the built-in systems your body uses to prevent skin cancer in the first place. We keep it plainspoken but accurate, because understanding the biology makes the prevention advice feel a lot less like nagging and a lot more like control. We talk about melanin and why tanning is a defense response, not a health goal, plus the difference between DNA damage and a permanent mutation. Then we meet one of the most important safety players in the story: P53, the protein that can pause cell division for repairs or trigger apoptosis when a cell is too damaged to keep. We also explain why sunburn pain and peeling are signs of real cellular injury, not just a temporary cosmetic annoyance. From there, we compare basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, including why melanoma depth is such a big deal for spread and survival. We cover why most moles never become cancer, what changes are worth acting on, and how to use the ABCDE method and the ugly duckling sign. We also address a persistent myth directly: skin cancer can occur in every skin color, and it may show up in different places like palms, soles, and under nails. We're Ed Delesky, a family medicine doctor, and Nicola Aruffo, a nurse, and we want you to leave with a practical plan: reduce future UV exposure, know what's normal for your skin, and get help when something evolves. Your eye color can change your day-to-day comfort in sunlight and it can hint at different long-term risks, but the real story is melanin. I'm Dr. Mark Grossman, an integrative medical optometrist and licensed acupuncturist, and I walk through what melanin is, how it functions as a natural pigment inside the eye, and why it acts like an internal shield against harmful light. We connect the science of eye pigment to practical outcomes: why darker eyes often block more UV and reduce internal glare, why lighter eyes can experience more light scatter and photophobia, and what that can mean for macular degeneration risk. We also discuss a noteworthy tradeoff mentioned by the American Academy of Ophthalmology about dark eyes and a slightly higher cataract risk, plus the higher risk of ocular uveal melanoma (a rare eye cancer) associated with lighter irises. From there, we get concrete about natural eye care and prevention. I explain melanin's protective roles like absorbing UVA and UVB radiation, helping stabilize free radicals, and filtering glare across the retina. Then we shift into what you can control today: wearing 100% UV-blocking sunglasses, using a wide-brimmed hat outdoors, and even looking into melanin-based sunglasses, which block 100% of UVA/UVB rays and filter High-Energy Visible (HEV) blue light. Finally, we review nutrients and herbs that may influence our ability to build melanin, including green tea, turmeric, ginseng, lotus flour, fenugreek, and saffron, with a clear-eyed look at what's promising versus what's not yet proven. If you care about eye health, UV protection, and simple habits that support healthy vision, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review. Hosts: Ed Jones (Owner – Nutrition World) & Clint Powell A variety of topics all about a healthy life Presented by: Nutrition World www.nutritionw.com Broadcasting from the Nooga Dentistry Studio www.noogadentistry.com Production of: Whitfield Media Group www.vitalhealthradio.com High baseline of general anxiety in pets; fireworks can escalate it dramatically Rough estimates from Dr. Smith: ~30% with noticeable anxiety ~10% with severe reactions: Destruction of property Defecating/urinating in house Extreme escape behaviors (e.g., dog through plate glass window)  Natural vs Pharmaceutical Support & Timing Severe cases: Trazodone often used; Dr. Smith avoids drugs that completely knock pets out Mentions older drugs (e.g., acepromazine) that overly sedate animals She prefers starting treatment the day before fireworks: Anxiety and pain wind up; if you get behind, it's hard to control Natural options she likes: Melatonin, tryptophan, theanine, GABA Pet products that combine several of these Start 1–2 days before fireworks because neighbors often start early [0:18:58]  Melatonin Dosing & CBD for Pets + Environmental Concerns Melatonin for dogs: Start around 3 mg, can go up, even up to ~10 mg in some cases Must be given at bedtime to preserve serotonin/melatonin rhythm Human reference: some serious disease protocols use up to 50 mg CBD: She likes CBD: generally very safe, large margin before toxicity Important: oil directly in mouth, not hidden in food (stomach acid breaks it down) Treats are OK, but observe individual response Ed notes TN hemp rule change (July 1) hurting many businesses; pet CBD appears less restricted for now Environmental side of fireworks: Harm to birds and nocturnal wildlife Startled flocks flying at night, running into obstacles [0:21:57] About CHAI: Services & Ozone Therapy Chai = Chattanooga Holistic Animal Institute On Main Street, Southside Open ~13–14 years Services: Conventional: surgery, X-rays Integrative: herbal medicine, nutrition-first approach, acupuncture, chiropractic Heavy focus on nutrition as foundation Ozone therapy: Used for cancer (mixing with blood + UVB), ear infections (ear cups), GI issues (ozone enema + fecal transplant) Antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial; research supports it but not mainstream due to lack of patentability Ed shares parallel human ozone experiences and enthusiasm [0:24:27] Regulatory Limits on CBD Advice & Practical Dosing Forms California example: Vets cannot legally discuss CBD with clients, while retail hemp shops can freely advise For cats: Liquids in vegetable glycerin are best Alcohol-based tinctures: cats won't like them (foaming, spitting) Liquids can go in food or directly in mouth For dogs: Easier to hide products, but Dr. Smith dislikes many chews: Often have rice flour, tapioca starch, molasses, smoke flavor (potential carcinogen) Prefers powders and liquids [0:26:16] Why Kibble Is Harmful & Heat Safety for Pets Core problems with kibble: Ultraprocessing damages proteins and fats Produces advanced glycation end products (AGEs)—carcinogenic High carbohydrate; not species-appropriate for carnivorous animals Expensive kibble = “expensive Skittles” – processing is still the issue Better options: Raw, dehydrated, freeze-dried Balanced homemade diets Light cooking under ~200°F for seniors to aid digestibility without denaturing nutrients Heat and Summer Safety for Pets Hot ground + hot air → limit daytime walks, adjust exercise Brachycephalic (“smushy-faced”) dogs at special risk: Pugs, Boston Terriers, bulldogs, etc. Shortened face doesn't reduce internal soft tissue; narrow airways = breathing through a straw Heat + humidity = much higher risk of heat exhaustion; many just lie on A/C vents Cats handle heat better (tend to stay inside), but should still be kept cool and supervised Pool safety: pets often don't know how to get out, so human supervision is essential [0:30:41] Independent Practice vs Corporate Vet Medicine CHAI is one of the last independent practices in town Independence allows: Thinking outside the box and the standard “cookbook” Corporate practices: Strict protocols, less flexibility Vets can't always practice as they'd like [0:36:09] Chemical Aging, Peakspan, and Electrolytes Ed quotes Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby (81-year-old MD) on “chemical aging”: Modern environment “poisons” us: Plastics, can linings, pesticides (glyphosate), microplastics Addictive refined carbs, seed oils Many of these mimic hormones and drive accelerated aging “Chemical aging” shows up as: Hair thinning, dry/crepey skin, age spots Persistent belly fat, “man boobs,” fragile bones, poorly fitting clothes Ed's own book: “Are You Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired?” He believes it lays out an A–Z game plan for aging better / “peakspan” Available as an ebook on TheHolisticNavigator.com Electrolytes vs Gatorade; Critique of Mainstream Sports Drinks Context: intense summer heat and need for electrolytes Our bodies run on electrical currents (heart, brain, nervous system) regulated by electrolytes Daily potassium need ≈ 3,400 mg Comparison: 20 oz Gatorade: ~75 mg potassium (very low) 0 mg magnesium ~270 mg sodium ~34–36 g carbohydrates/sugar Gatorade Zero: no sugar but uses sucralose, which Ed says can disrupt the gut microbiome Ed's personal take: Would rather “spend” that sugar on a cheesecake dessert than on Gatorade Example True Grace electrolyte formula (carried at Nutrition World): ~750 mg sodium ~250 mg potassium ~100 mg magnesium ~100 mg cordyceps (supportive for lungs/endurance) Great Naturally has ~700 mg potassium per serving Conclusion: many store-brand sports drinks are nutritionally weak and sugar-heavy compared to targeted electrolyte blends [0:44:27] Pepcid (Famotidine), Serotonin, and Essential Oils for Sore Throat Ed introduces Pepcid (famotidine): H2 blocker commonly used OTC for heartburn Prefers it over long-term proton pump inhibitors (e.g., Nexium) Key claim from research Ed cites: Famotidine uniquely blocks certain serotonin activity Can sometimes help with: Chronic pain Inflammation Fatigue Case example: life-threatening serotonin syndrome reversed in 15 minutes with famotidine Elevated serotonin may: Impair mitochondrial energy production Promote chronic inflammation and, paradoxically, some depression and pain Ed has bought a box himself; recommends it as the safer short-term choice for bad heartburn Essential Oils vs Antibiotics for Sore Throats Study on sore throat treatment: 97 adults with clinically diagnosed sore throat Group 1: penicillin twice daily Group 2: oral essential oils capsule 3× daily Group 3: both Outcomes: 100% improvement in antibiotic group 88% improvement in essential oil–only group 100% improvement in combined group Essential oil blend ingredients: Oregano, eucalyptus, lemon, cinnamon, pine oils Clint raises important question: absent a no-treatment control, some percentage may have improved naturally) Quick guide to buying quality beef: Prefer “100% grass-fed” over just “grass-fed” Look for or confirm grass-finished (often not on labels due to cost; Old satellites and bits of space junk regularly fall back to Earth, burning up as they pass through the atmosphere. All this burning metal causes a chain reaction and ultimately destroys ozone molecules, which keep us safe from most of the Sun's harmful UVB rays. Could a new era of satellite "megaconstellations", like the one run by SpaceX's internet company Starlink, undo humanity's hard work repairing the ozone layer?‌Jonathan Webb launches into this issue with Dr Alice Gorman (AKA Dr Space Junk), taking stock of just how many satellites are burning up and what can be done to solve the problem. You can binge more episodes of the Lab Notes podcast with science editor and presenter Jonathan Webb on the ABC Listen app (Australia). Send us Fan MailOne photon travels nearly 93 million miles and still arrives with a job to do. We dig into sunlight as biology-changing information, starting with Einstein's photoelectric effect and ending with a practical, unsettling question: what are we giving up when we spend most of life indoors and out of sync with the day?We walk through the spectrum in plain language and connect it to real physiology. UVB light helps convert cholesterol in the skin into pre-vitamin D, but the deeper story is that vitamin D behaves like a transcription factor with “top secret access” to the nucleus, influencing hundreds of genes. Then we zoom out to what most people miss: blue light around 480 nm sets circadian rhythm through melanopsin receptors in the retina, UVA can mobilise nitric oxide to support blood flow and cardiovascular health, and red to near-infrared wavelengths interact with mitochondria through cytochrome c oxidase, shaping energy production, healing, and resilience.Along the way we challenge the supplement-only mindset, explain why sunlight is self-regulating in ways pills are not, and explore why people often override what their bodies feel with what they have been told to fear. If you care about circadian health, vitamin D, nitric oxide, photobiomodulation, mitochondrial function, and the future of biophysics in medicine, this is the map we wish more people had.Subscribe to The Health Edge, share this with a friend who never gets outside, and leave a review so more people can find the science of self-care.For slides and open source references: www.thehealthedgepodcast.com

Skin Cancer Prevention, Anti-Aging Biohacking, and the Melanoma Detection Gap Most dermatologists are missing melanoma, and a board-certified skin cancer specialist explains exactly why, and what to do about it. This episode covers the detection tool that finds 10 times more melanomas, the real truth about sunscreen chemicals, the biohacking peptide that can hide cancer on your skin, and the cheap anti-aging drug that most people have never tried. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Michael Christopher, a board-certified dermatologist and expert dermoscopist recognized for his work in early melanoma detection. Through consistent, evidence-based use of dermoscopy, he identifies between 150 and 215 melanomas annually, far exceeding national and state averages and exposing a critical gap in standard skin cancer screening. Dr. Christopher speaks regularly on prevention, early detection, and systemic failures in dermatology training across health, wellness, and longevity-focused media, and has made it his mission to change the standard of care before more people die from a cancer that is almost always curable when caught early. Dave and Dr. Christopher break down why a standard skin exam with no additional tools is essentially a guess, how dermoscopy changes everything, and why most dermatologists who claim to use it actually cannot interpret what they see. They get into the real risk factors for rising melanoma rates, what sunscreen labels are not telling you, and how melanotan and other biohacking peptides interact with your skin cancer risk in ways that matter. They also cover tretinoin as one of the most evidence-backed anti-aging and skin optimization tools available, how red lighttherapy supports mitochondria function and skin rejuvenation, and what parents should know about protecting their kids' skin for long-term longevity You'll Learn: Why most dermatologists miss melanoma and what the detection gap actually looks like What dermoscopy is, how it works, and why you should ask for it by name How melanoma survival drops from 99% at stage one to 73% at stage three What the Prop 65 cancer warning on most pharmacy sunscreens actually means Why visible light can darken your skin even when you wear sunscreen How melanotan activates melanocortin receptors and why that may affect melanoma risk What Retin-A does to collagen, the epidermis, and long-term skin aging How AI is entering dermoscopy and where it still falls short The right concentration of tretinoin to start with and how to get through the adjustment period What parents should do now to protect their kids from melanoma later Thank you to our sponsors! -Beyond Wonderland Conference | Oct 13 - 14, 2026. Semaglutide Slows Biological Aging A randomized, placebo-controlled study published in Nature Communications found semaglutide slowed biological aging markers by nine percent on the DunedinPACE epigenetic clock in adults living with HIV-associated metabolic disease, with simultaneous improvements across inflammation, heart, kidney, liver, and brain markers. Host Dave Asprey breaks down why this isn't a weight loss story. It's a metabolic inflammation story. He explains why the GLP-1 mechanism hitting insulin signaling, oxidative stress, and inflammatory pathways simultaneously is the real finding, and makes the case that your metabolic markers and your aging markers are the same numbers. Sources: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/glp-1-drugs-ozempic-wegovy-may-slow-biological-aging https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-72861-3 https://today.ucsd.edu/story/study-popular-glp-1-drug-may-slow-down-biological-aging FDA Approves First New Sunscreen Ingredient in 20 Years The FDA approved bemotrizinol as a permitted OTC sunscreen active ingredient, the first new approval in roughly two decades, clearing it for adults and children six months and older with broad UVA and UVB coverage and low skin absorption. Host Dave Asprey explains why twenty years of regulatory lag left American consumers with inferior chemistry while Europe moved on, why he's watching independent absorption data before updating his own stack, and why consistency of use matters more than perfect formulation when sun protection remains one of the most evidence-backed longevity interventions available. Host Dave Asprey breaks down why mouse hair regrowth studies have a long history of failing to translate to humans, what a plausible circulation-based mechanism would actually need to show in human trial data before it's worth acting on, and why the molecule itself is interesting enough to keep watching. Host Dave Asprey breaks down why delivery mechanism is an underrated variable in caffeine optimization, why timing matters as much as dose, and why a modest but measurable edge on a cheap and accessible tool is exactly the kind of practical biohack worth understanding. Host Dave Asprey explains the actual hepatotoxicity and bone demineralization risks of preformed retinol excess, draws the critical distinction between preformed retinol and beta-carotene that got lost in the misinformation cycle, and makes the case that mechanism is not a dosing protocol and confusing the two is how people get hurt. Why Wearing Sunscreen All Day May Be Doing More Harm Than Good for Women Over 40 In this thought-provoking episode, Angela Foster sits down with renowned beauty expert and author Liz Earle MBE to challenge conventional wisdom about sunscreen and sun exposure. Liz discusses why current public health messaging around universal, all-day SPF use might be too extreme, potentially robbing us of vital Vitamin D and other essential benefits of natural daylight. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many people assume they still get Vitamin D while wearing sunscreen. However, Liz points out that this only happens because most people apply it too thinly or miss spots.  Applying high SPF when it is completely unnecessary, like on a dark winter morning during an underground commute, is a sign that public health messaging has become too broad.  Our skin isn't just a physical barrier; it actively receives light and communicates with the body's immune system.  Exposing your skin to gentle, early-morning sunlight (when the UV index is low) acclimatizes it.  Medical professionals and researchers are beginning to speak out against extreme sun avoidance.  BEST MOMENTS "When people say, 'Yes, you get Vitamin D from the sun when you're using sunscreen,' yeah, because you're not using your sunscreen properly. You're actually allowing some of that UVB to come through the skin." "The worst thing that we can do is stay indoors all year and then rush out for our two-week summer beach holiday and fry ourselves on the beach... That's because our skin has not got used to the sunlight." "The skin is actually an organ of light reception. This is what we're just beginning to understand, that the skin has light receptors on it for reasons—they're signaling, it's not just blocking and keeping our insides intact." "I don't know if you take collagen supplements, I do, but actually by going out in early morning light, I'm telling my body to make more collagen. So it's preparing the skin." "He says that he thinks that we will look back at this time and our lack of sun exposure as being as damaging to our health as smoking." He is the author of nine books, has lectured at Harvard and Yale, and has appeared on CBS, NBC, and NPR. In today's conversation, we discuss his unique and fascinating new book, In Defense of Sunlight, which explores the nuances surrounding light exposure. We look at the value of sun exposure and vitamin D, and Rowan explains why light acts as a master regulator in the body and how our modern lifestyles may be disrupting our natural biology more than we realize. We examine the effects of shift work, cortisol rhythm dysregulation, and the minimum effective dose of sunlight intensity and exposure, and Rowan breaks down how UVA and UVB wavelengths impact our physiology. We also cover the importance of nitric oxide production, and Rowan shares recommendations from his work. Stay tuned for an eye-opening conversation on why sunlight may be one of the most overlooked foundations of human health. For those who enjoy reading about science, I highly recommend Rowan's book! There is a conversation your body is in every single day — with light.Long before we tracked hormones, optimised sleep, or tried to “hack” our health, the human body evolved in deep relationship with the rhythms of sunrise, daylight, dusk, and darkness. And whether we realise it or not, our biology is still responding to those ancient cues.In this episode, I'm joined once again by Karinda Wholistix for a deep and fascinating conversation on circadian biology, sunlight, mitochondria, and the profound ways our bodies are shaped by the light environment around us. We explore how our systems read and respond to “wild light”, what begins to shift when that rhythm is disrupted, and why understanding this relationship changes the way we view hormones, energy, sleep, nervous system health, and more. This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation — laying the foundations for understanding the intelligence of circadian rhythm and the body's relationship with light.About KarindaKarinda Wholistix is a BHSc Naturopath, Fertility Awareness Educator, and Menstrual Cycle Educator based in Naarm (Melbourne), working with women online across Australia. Send us Fan MailSunscreen advice usually comes as a binary: fear the sun or ignore the risks. We take a different path and give you a practical framework for sun protection that doesn't sacrifice the real health benefits of sunlight. From the start, we separate the roles of UVA and UVB so you can understand what actually causes sunburn, what drives vitamin D production, and why UVA is linked with skin aging while still playing a role in nitric oxide release and circulation. Then we get concrete about “sensible sunlight exposure,” a balanced approach popularised by vitamin D researcher Dr Michael Holick. We talk about how timing, latitude, altitude, season, and skin pigmentation change your safe window for unprotected sun, and why regular gradual exposure can build a “solar callus” that improves tolerance. We also cover a detail many people miss: most household glass blocks UVB but allows UVA through, which matters for anyone spending long hours near windows or on the road. Finally, we tackle sunscreen safety and label reading. We discuss concerns around common sunscreen chemicals like parabens and benzophenone-3 (often called oxybenzone), the reality of transdermal absorption with frequent reapplication, and why combining products can amplify exposure, especially when sunscreen overlaps with insect repellent. We share how we use the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tools like the Skin Deep app, clarify what SPF and “broad spectrum” really mean, and name the mineral sunscreens we trust, with an emphasis on zinc oxide and non-nano options. If this helps you rethink your summer routine, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find smarter, safer guidance on sunlight, sunscreen, and skin health.Environmental Working Group: ewg.orgwww.thehealthedgepodcast.com

Send us Fan MailHow light regulate circadian rhythms, mitochondrial function, hormones, and appetite.Nick & Dr. Alexis Cowan discuss non-image-forming effects of light on the body, from melanopsin-driven circadian signaling in the eye to UV-stimulated pathways in skin and brain that influence melatonin, cortisol, melanin production, and energy balance.TOPICS DISCUSSED:Melanopsin & non-image-forming light: blue light signals daytime to the SCN master clock, suppressing melatonin and promoting alertness.UV light, POMC & peptide hormones: UVB exposure in skin and hypothalamus produces alpha-MSH (reduces appetite, boosts energy expenditure) and beta-endorphin (improves mood), independent of vitamin D.Mitochondrial effects of light: red/infrared supports function like a gas pedal; isolated blue light acts as brakes, impairing energy production and biophoton signaling.Artificial light: Evening blue light from screens inhibits melatonin, poisons mitochondria, and creates discordant timing signals versus balanced natural sunlight.Melanin beyond skin: produced via UVB, it harnesses energy, buffers oxidative stress, and links to dopamine pathways; low sun exposure ties to metabolic issues and conditions like Parkinson's.Vitamin D as biomarker: supplementation shows limited benefits because it reflects broader UVB-driven processes, not a standalone fix.ABOUT THE GUEST: Alexis Cowan, PhD earned her PhD in molecular biology at Princeton in the Rabinowitz lab, a leading metabolism research group, where she studied fasting, ketogenic diets, and exercise; she completed a postdoc at UPenn before shifting focus to circadian and quantum biology. She now educates on light, mitochondria, and quantum biology.RELATED EPISODE:M&M 221: Regenerative Energy & the Light Inside You | Jack KruseSupport the showHealth Products by M&M Partners:AquaTru: Water filtration devices that remove microplastics, metals, bacteria, and more from your drinking water. Clean Made Simple: Natural Toxin-Free Living with guest Beth Newberry, Advocate and Platinum Ambassador, Pure Haven Some of the most heavily-marketed and highly-recognized name brand consumer products today are formulated with toxic chemical ingredients. When these pollutants find their way into the air and water around us, they harm healthy ecosystems? How can we make non-toxic consumer product choices that are more earth-friendly? My guest, Beth Newberry, will help answer these questions and give practical tips for reading ingredient labels. Newberry is a Platinum Ambassador for Pure Haven. She started her foray into non-toxic living 16 years ago when her middle son, Liam was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. She began reading labels on her products and researching the ingredients and realized that many conventional products contain neurotoxins. This drove her passion to educate others on the same topic, and she began supporting more families with switching out to non-toxic alternatives. In addition to her work at Pure Haven, Newberry also chairs the Groundwater Protection Committee in her town of North Smithfield, Rhode Island. Consumers are making healthier choices with regards to food. If you feel tired but wired, struggle with hormone imbalances, poor sleep, blood sugar crashes, or stubborn symptoms, the issue may not be what you're eating, but when. Your circadian rhythm is the master system coordinating your hormones, metabolism, digestion, and nervous system. In this episode, we break down circadian rhythm in a practical, real-life way. This isn't just about sleep. It's about how your body knows what time it is and what it should be doing. We cover how light, food timing, and movement act as biological signals for cortisol, melatonin, thyroid function, mitochondrial health, and even hormone production. We also dive into why poor sleep, PMDD, irregular cycles, afternoon crashes, and even skin flare-ups may stem from circadian disruption. If you've been focusing on supplements, elimination diets, or protocols without seeing results, this episode will show you the foundational layer you might be missing.   What You'll Learn In this episode, we discuss: What circadian rhythm actually is (and why every cell has a 24-hour clock) How cortisol and melatonin should rise and fall naturally The difference between sunrise, UVA rise, and UVB light How circadian rhythm impacts thyroid hormone conversion (T4 to T3) Simple habits to support sleep, metabolism, and nervous system regulation   Chapters 00:00 – Why circadian rhythm impacts hormones & sleep 04:14 – Every cell runs on a 24-hour clock 09:44 – Cortisol timing, digestion & metabolism explained 14:23 – Sunrise: the master reset signal 20:53 – UVA rise & hormone production (pregnenolone, thyroid, insulin) 27:45 – Sunset & melatonin preparation 32:18 – The role of food timing in circadian rhythm 35:29 – Vitamin D vs. melatonin (seasonal shifts explained) 39:09 – Movement timing & workouts 41:36 – Signs your circadian rhythm is off 45:55 – Practical habits you can implement immediately   Resources & Mentions My Circadian App Circadian Rhythm Resource Blue Light Glasses Circadian Lighting How to Turn Your iPhone Red   Want to Work With Us? You don't need to spend a fortune on infrared devices to get plenty of infrared light. Check out this fascinating interview with Dr. Roger Seheult, an expert on sunlight and vitamin D, as we discuss the powerful health benefits of sunlight. 0:00 Welcome, Dr. Roger Seheult 4:05 The abscopal effect of light 4:58 What does light do in the body? 10:24 Infrared light and nature 12:06 The Green Heart study 13:45 Infrared light and sleep 21:24 Indoor lighting and your healthPlease join me in welcoming Dr. Roger Seheult, quadruple board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine. Dr. Seheult shares some fascinating new research about the ability of sunlight to penetrate the human body. It's been previously thought that the sun could only penetrate a few centimeters into our bodies, but recent research has shown that it can penetrate the entire body and can even be measured on the other side. Surprisingly, randomized, placebo-controlled studies have shown that light can affect parts of the body that were not exposed to sunlight. This phenomenon is known as the abscopal effect. This means that mitochondria from one part of the body can communicate with each other and upregulate, even if they are not directly exposed to light. Infrared light can stimulate the mitochondria to produce more melatonin, which can reduce oxidative stress. It's not significantly affected by the atmosphere, so you can get it almost any time of the day. UVB light, which you need to make vitamin D, is more abundant when the sun is at its highest.Green trees, leaves, and grass reflect infrared light. To maximize infrared light absorption, head to green spaces where nature can reflect infrared light back to you!The Green Heart study measured the HSCRP, which correlates with the risk of stroke or heart attack, in residents of south Louisville, Kentucky—a region characterized by concrete and a lack of greenery. Approximately 8,000 trees were planted in a 4-square-mile area, and the HSCRP was remeasured. This resulted in a 13% to 20% average drop in HSCRP, which correlates to a 10% to 15% reduction in stroke and heart attack risk, without any changes in diet or exercise.Dr. Seheult also explains that daytime light exposure helps with sleep by supporting the circadian rhythm, while nighttime light exposure can have an opposite effect.Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting.
