Parkinson's Disease is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world. While there is no cure, there is hope for patients to help relive the symptoms of this disease.  In this episode, you'll learn:—How constipation can be an early symptom indicating Parkinson's Disease. And the involuntary "pill rolling" motion that is usually the very first sign of Parkinson's.—Why Dr. Prather says getting your Glutathione level up is one of the most important things you can do for preventing Parkinson's Disease and even helping to reverse its damage. And how IV Therapy is the best way to get Glutathione into the body.   —Why Dr. Prather "highly, highly" recommends patients seek "very effective" pharmaceutical treatments for Parkinson's Disease in addition to Structure-Function Care that "every Parkinson's patient should have" to help alleviate the symptoms.—How Dr. Prather helps his patients to reduce the side effects of Parkinson's medications, while keeping patients on those important medicines. —The reason Dr. Prather says "Hair Analysis" is "one of the most critical" diagnostics for Parkinson's patients. And how he has found about 10% of his Parkinson's patients have a "false Parkinson's" diagnosis that actually comes from Manganese toxicity.—The "absolutely critical" dietary changes for Parkinson's, including high Fiber and low Protein, which will "almost always" cut a patient's required medication "at least in half".—The "dramatic improvement" Dr. Prather sees when nutritional deficiencies associated with Parkinson's are addressed, including: Folic Acid, Niacin, Thiamine B1, B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E. And why Dr. Prather recommends Green Tea, Ginkgo Biloba, Velvet Beans, and Fava Beans.—Why the Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic Technique is "the biggest thing for Parkinson's" that results in an immediate change in the neurology and symptoms. Plus, the exercises and neck brace that correct the Forward Head Posture, which then causes "most of the Parkinson's symptoms to go away". —How Dr. Prather uses a particular Acupuncture protocol for Parkinson's patients, including a point on the tip of the nose that he never uses otherwise.—The Auriculotherapy protocol for Parkinson's that works on the brain by stimulating points on the ear.http://www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com

I came across Ginkgo  Biloba as a herb that increases our blood flow and that is crucial for the brain and the entire body…For instance, low blood flow causes rectal dysfunction and low Nitrous oxide…40% of 40 years old have rectal dysfunction, 70% of 70 years old have rectal dysfunctionIf you have blood flow problems anywhere you have blood flow problems everywhere…So older we get so more problems we have with our blood flow.We have to exercise our body daily, otherwise, no supplement can help us increase our blood flow!Maybe you think with coffee you can increase your blood flow… The opposite is true, caffeine that is also in Tea cause low blood flow because it constricts the blood vessels. And Caffeine shrinks the brain.Laboratory studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood circulation by opening up blood vessels and making blood less sticky. It is also an antioxidant.Although Chinese herbal medicine has used both the ginkgo leaf and seed for thousands of years, Ginkgo  Biloba has the components flavonoids and terpenoids. Flavonoids are plant-based antioxidants. Laboratory and animal studies show that flavonoids protect the nerves, heart muscle, blood vessels, and retina from damage. Terpenoids (such as ginkgolides) improve blood flow by dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness of platelets.Ginkgo is widely used in Europe for treating dementia.Several studies show that ginkgo has a positive effect on memory and thinking in people with Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia.Improve thinking, learning, and memory (cognitive function).Have an easier time performing daily activities.Improve social behavior.Have fewer feelings of depression.Good for our eyes, protects our retina, improves Glaucoma, and helps macular degeneration. One preliminary study found that a special formulation of ginkgo extract called EGB 761 might help relieve anxiety. It can take 4 to 6 weeks to see any effects from ginkgo. Ask your doctor to help you find the right dose. How much we should take 2 times 120mg with food? Please consult your doctor before you take Ginkgo  Biloba.Because Ginkgo Biloba can interfere with some medicaments…My Video:  Ginkgo Biloba is the best for our brain. https://youtu.be/C4GavOHVO7wMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast4/Ginkgo-Biloba-is-the-best-for-our-brain.mp3

Functional Medicine Research with Dr. Nikolas Hedberg

A new paper entitled “Isorhamnetin protects porcine oocytes from zearalenone-induced reproductive toxicity through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway” investigated the effects of a natural flavonoid called isorhamnetin on the damage caused by a toxin called Zearalenone (ZEA) to pig oocytes (immature egg cells). Zearalenone (ZEA) is a harmful mycotoxin found in moldy grain like corn, oats, and millet that can cause irreversible damage to the reproductive system of animals and humans. It can cause reproductive disorders by binding to estrogen receptors and has been shown to impair the development of sperm and oocytes in humans and animals. ZEA can cause oxidative stress that leads to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can be harmful and contribute to cell death. ZEA can also disrupt pregnancy, inhibit the meiosis of oocytes, and induce mitochondrial damage and stress in the maturation of oocytes. Since ZEA is heat-stable and cannot be completely eliminated from the food chain, it is important to explore potential compounds that can protect against ZEA-induced damage to oocytes. In recent years, natural substances called flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties, have gained attention for their ability to support the development of oocytes. For example, quercetin has been found to increase the proportion of porcine oocytes developing into blastocysts, while kaempferol has shown potential in reducing the negative effects of aging on the development of porcine oocytes by improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress. Isorhamnetin is a compound found in the herb ginkgo biloba and in foods like pears, onions, and peanuts. It has various pharmacological activities, such as being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral.     Isorhamnetin acts as an antioxidant by decreasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing the expression of SOD2 protein, which helps protect against oxidative stress. This study found that isorhamnetin can protect the oocytes from ZEA-induced damage by improving their development, reducing oxidative stress, preventing mitochondrial dysfunction, and inhibiting apoptosis. This research provides a potential solution for reproductive toxicity caused by ZEA and treating female infertility. Mold Toxicity and Ginkgo Biloba Clinical Applications Ginkgo biloba is rich in isorhamnetin as well as other powerful flavonoids like quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin which makes it the perfect herb for patients with mold toxicity. Ginkgo biloba has many benefits including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, anticoagulant, anti-obesity, hypolipidemic, hypotensive, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, adaptogenic, and it protects the brain, eye, inner ear, heart, liver, cardiovascular system, reproductive system, lungs, and kidneys. Patients with mold toxicity tend to have reactivated herpes viruses like EBV, CMV, and HHV-6 and ginkgo biloba is effective against these types of viruses as explained in this article. I use VascuSelect from Moss Nutrition which contains 120 mg of standardized ginkgo biloba extract along with grape seed extract and mango extract to further support microcirculation. 120 mg of ginkgo biloba twice a day is the usual dose for this versatile herbal medicine. If you're a practitioner who sees patients with mold toxicity and/or infertility, then VascuSelect should be considered an important part of your protocol. Ginkgo biloba, known for its distinctive fan-shaped leaves, has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in Asia. Ginkgo biloba is often touted as an herb for brain health, such as improving memory and cognition. This reputation does a great disservice to the most versatile herb in the world. Ginkgo biloba can be used as a potent antiviral agent for a variety of viruses. Ginkgo biloba has some key bioactive antiviral components: Flavonoids and Terpenoids: Ginkgo leaves contain high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids, compounds known for their antioxidant properties. These substances contribute to the antiviral activity of the plant. Ginkgolides and Bilobalides: These are unique terpene trilactones found in Ginkgo biloba, which have specific antiviral activities. Ginkgo Biloba's Mechanisms of Antiviral Action The antiviral properties of Ginkgo biloba are multi-faceted, involving multiple mechanisms: Inhibition of the fusions and synthesis of proteins in the viruses herpes simplex 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Inhibition of genome replication in cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Zika virus (ZIKV). Inhibition of viral fusion proteins in HIV, Ebola virus (EBOV), influenza A virus (IAV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Inhibition of the targeting protein and DNA of coronoviruses (SARS-CoV-2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and measles virus. Inhibition of Viral Entry and Replication: Some studies suggest that Ginkgo biloba extracts can interfere with the ability of viruses to enter host cells or replicate. This is a key step in preventing the spread of viral infections. Immune System Modulation: Ginkgo biloba might enhance the body's immune response against viral infections. By modulating immune functions, it could help in controlling viral spread and severity. Anti-inflammatory Effects: The anti-inflammatory properties of Ginkgo biloba can be beneficial in reducing the severity of symptoms associated with viral infections. Research on Ginkgo Biloba's Antiviral Properties Anti-MERS-CoV and Anti-HCoV-229E Properties: A study focused on the antiviral activities of Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Human Coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E). Inhibition of Enveloped Viruses: Research published in Scientific Reports discussed how ginkgolic acid, a component of Ginkgo biloba, inhibits the fusion of enveloped viruses. The study found that ginkgolic acid had a strong inhibitory effect on Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and also tested its effects on Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) and Zika Virus (ZIKV). Researchers also found broad spectrum inhibition by ginkgolic acid of all three classes of fusion proteins including HIV, Ebola virus (EBOV), influenza A virus (IAV) and Epstein Barr virus (EBV). In addition, inhibition was found of a non-enveloped adenovirus. The authors conclude that ginkolic acids may potentially be used to treat acute infections (e.g. Coronavirus, EBOV, ZIKV, IAV and measles), and also topically for the successful treatment of active lesions (e.g. HSV-1, HSV-2 and varicella-zoster virus (VZV)). It was observed that ginkgolic acid could inhibit the entry of these viruses into cells, thereby blocking viral replication. Another study entitled, “Ginkgolic acids inhibit SARS-CoV-2 and its variants by blocking the spike protein/ACE2 interplay” found that ginkgolic acids from ginkgo biloba inhibited the SARS-CoV-2 virus from binding to the ACE2 receptor and thus could potentially be helpful in acute COVID-19 infections. I use VascuSelect from Moss Nutrition which contains 120 mg of ginkgo biloba, 100 mg of grape seed extract, and 100 mg of mango fruit powder per capsule for acute and chronic viruses dosed 1 capsule once or twice a day with or without food. Grape seed extract and mango fruit powder have also been shown to have antiviral properties. This trio of herbs not only has antiviral prop...

Functional Medicine Research with Dr. Nikolas Hedberg

5 case reports were reported in an excellent paper on ginkgo biloba and Long COVID symptoms. Patients with Long COVID were given 80 mg of ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) twice a day. Patient 1 took ginkgo biloba for 11 weeks, and he had a substantial improvement in cognitive concerns, decreased perception of fatigue and an improvement in olfaction. He completely regained his sense of smell. Patient 2 took ginkgo biloba for 13 weeks and reported improvement in concentration and fatigue. Patient 3 took ginkgo biloba for 4 months and reported significant improvement in cognitive deficits. Patient 4 took ginkgo biloba for 7 weeks and reported improved concentration and fatigue. Patient 5 took ginkgo biloba for 6 weeks and reported improvement in depression, fatigue, irritability, and hyposmia. Two of these patients reported complete remission of their cognitive symptoms. None of the patients had any adverse effects. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has been shown to damage the microcirculation blood vessels resulting in decreased blood flow to vital tissues such as the heart, kidney, muscle tissue, ear, eyes, liver, brain and nervous system. Ginkgo biloba has been shown to protect and repair large and small blood vessels, as well as a host of other body tissues. Ginkgo biloba has antioxidant properties, improves circulation, repairs and protects the brain, nervous system, eye, ear, kidney, intestine, heart, and cardiovascular system. This makes ginkgo biloba a perfect herbal medicine for Long COVID, and the results of these case reports are not surprising. How best to take ginkgo biloba? Ginkgo biloba is usually dosed 120-240 mg a day in one or two doses with or without food. It can disrupt sleep, so some people may need to take it in the morning and no later than the early afternoon. The dose used in this study was 80 mg twice a day totaling 160 mg a day. But the author's point out that a higher dose may have yielded even better results. I normally use 120 mg twice a day with my patients. Ginkgo biloba side effects such as headache only occur in 2% of people who take it. It can take up to six weeks to notice the full effects of ginkgo biloba so give it some time to work. My formula VascuSelect from Moss Nutrition contains 120 mg of ginkgo biloba per capsule with added grape seed extract and mango fruit powder. Grape seed extract and mango also support and repair microcirculation for a synergistic effect with the ginkgo biloba. Ginkgo biloba should be standardized to 24% flavonol glycosides and 6% terpenes for maximum effectiveness. Please be sure to consult with your licensed healthcare professional before supplementing with ginkgo biloba due to potential risks of bleeding disorders. Certain medications can increase the risk of bleeding when combined with ginkgo biloba. Long COVID is having devastating consequences on society and new natural treatments are constantly emerging to help. Ginkgo biloba is now part of my evidence-based core Long COVID protocol. Hedberg Institute members can log in and download my latest Long COVID protocol.

If your brain controls everything in your body and mind, does it also somehow affect your relationship with God? Can brain function affect spirituality? Today's guest, Dr. Daniel Amen, is a physician, child and adult psychiatrist, brain imaging specialist, bestselling author, and the CEO and medical director of Amen Clinics. Dr. Amen takes a holistic, practical approach in linking a dynamic feedback loop that exists between the brain and the events in our lives. Today he discusses the neurological connection we have to our souls as well as offers tips for a healthier brain, no matter what our age.   Dr. Daniel Amen has studied the brains of loving people, as well as evil people. His research has shown that racism and hatred often involve problems in the brain. People like this may hold grudges as they can't let things go. They cannot change their opinion because of brain function.  Dr. Amen has compared the brains of inmates, including murderers, and tests have shown clear deficits in the activity in their brains. If they are medicated, they may become calmer and more understanding.   He further discusses the importance of examining our thoughts. He suggests writing out what you are thinking. Must you believe every thought you have? Try talking back to depressive thoughts and try to think in a more positive direction. This will start to balance the brain function. You can apply these methods to begin to gain a sense of relief.   He also discusses the importance of physical exercise, as well as learning something new. This is so imperative, especially as we age. It increases blood flow to the brain and can be used to help prevent memory loss. Dr. Amen also discusses supplements, including Ginkgo Biloba, St John's Wort, and Vitamin E. If you would like to try supplementation, always be sure to consult with your healthcare practitioner first.   Dr. Amen has also studied how prayer and meditation improve brain function. He suggests teaching children this as a method of focus, rather than playing video games which has the opposite effect.

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows!   This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track!   Check out today's questions:    Margie: Hi Dr. Cabral! My questions are about Vit A toxicity. In April I started using a retinol cream at night then developed dry lips that eventually became cracked, bleeding, and painful in July! I also experienced general dryness in my mouth, eyes, and bowels. After listening to your podcast about what your lips tell about your health, I realized that it was the retinol cream & stopped using it immediately. My Vit A history includes 3 treatments of Accutane. It makes sense that adding retinol to my night time routine finally “tipped that scale”, overloading my liver. I've done 2 CBO protocols & several detoxes since 2018. Before I realized that the cream was the source of my problems, I did a 7-day detox & noticed that my lips worsened esp. during the 2 days of fasting. I stopped using the DNS powder, all supplements that listed Vit A on the label & stopped eating foods known to have high levels of Vit A. After several weeks, my symptoms improved. I heard you mention in a podcast that you were going to talk about a low Vitamin A diet but haven't been able to find anything on that topic. What would a low Vitamin A diet consist of? Once my lips are completely healed, would it be safe to resume DNS, supplements, & foods with Vit A? Thanks a bunch!   Paula: Hello and thank you for all that you do Dr Cabral! My 77 yr old mother has had intermittent amnesia episodes for over 13 years now, occurring on average 3 to 4 times per year. She has had extensive testing with no definitive outcome. Tests & scans looking at epilepsy, blood supply to the brain & heart were normal. There have been no head traumas that she is aware of in the past. I have recently started looking into it further myself and have come across a condition called Global Transient Amnesia which describes her symptoms almost exactly. When having an "episode" as she calls them, she loses short term memory for about 1/2 an hour and has no idea what she was doing at the time, nor what has happened in her recent past. She is still able to perform normal functions and is alert and very aware that the episode is happening but is just unable to recall anything from days/weeks prior for about 25 minutes or so which is distressing for her. Her memory returns gradually over that time and is then often very tired afterward. I am wondering if there could be an underlying issue that could be causing this and if you recommend any functional testing? She has been taking Ginkgo Biloba and liquid magnesium on and off for years without any notable differences. Thanks so much in advance.   Dani: Hi Dr cabral, grateful for your work and would love to hear your thoughts. A few months ago I had my first eczema and dermatitis flare up since 2019 when I healed my gut and rebalanced my body with my naturopath. The dermatitis is on my face, either seborrheic or perioral. I have used native and no pong deodorants for years but they irritated and inflamed the eczema on my armpits, it was very painful so I didn't apply anything all winter (based in Aus). My first though was gut-skin connection so I've been using a gut powder. Also ran the big 5 (just have one more test to do). Have already received my intolerance test back as it felt urgent to me but everything was fine on it (not one intolerance?!) I finished the 21 day detox last week. Still some dermatitis on my face, and I just tried some Bicarb free no pong Deodorant and a few hours later a rash and itching started. So now I'm wondering what other causes should I be looking at for this skin flare up. I'm sure I'll get some more answers from my big 5 but I was hoping it would have been something as simple as the food intolerance which I've experienced in the past. I do have some hormonal issues which were the main reason for my big 5 but wasn't sure if that could be a link to my eczema. Thanks again, appreciate you!   Luis: Hi Dr. Cabral, I wanted to get your thoughts on the Salt Water Flush. I believe this is also a ayurvedic practice, but I could be wrong. It involves drinking about a pint of warm to hot water, with about 2 table spoons of salt (pink or sea salt). After some time, it will purge the contents of the intestines until the water eventually comes out clear. The only downside I know of is that it may cause electrolyte imbalances, but replenishing those isn't a problem for me. I have done this many times over the past few years, but wanted your opinion on this procedure as well. Thanks for all you do!   Nikki: Hi Dr. Cabral, -I'm 55 yo female, mainly vata with some kapha, exercising 6 days weekly, 5'6” 112 lbs. -I've done the 21 day detox and the 7 day detox 3 times this past year. I've also done the Big 5 Labs and neurotransmitter test. I have candida and yeast overgrowth along with several food sensitivities (probably from leaky gut). I've done the CBO protocol with citricidal drops, noticing digestive improvement only while on the citricidal drops. Each time I introduced new foods I had gas, bloating and loose stools throughout the remainder of the CBO protocol so I didn't keep eating them. -I then did the 3 day stool test (no h-Pylori or parasites), spoke with one of your health coaches and did the Limited Yeast protocol with the citricidal drops but continued to have the bloating, gas and loose stools after introducing new foods so, I'm still not eating anything off the sensitive gut guide except for once or twice a week when I try a new food. I take Healthy Belly 3 x daily and Healthy Gut Support each morning along with digestive enzymes when I try new foods. -I've done the Para Protocol, Intestinal Cleanse and Heavy Metal Detox. -My hormones are still not aligned although I've taken the Equilife estrogen and progesterone supplements-presumable my digestion isn't able to absorb the nutrients from the supplements. I also tried seed cycling but my digestive problems worsened. -I have restless leg which is somewhat helpful with magnesium cream. I take cal/mag at dinner and full spectrum magnesium at bedtime. I drink 2 DNS shakes daily. -I also have the antiphospholipid syndrome and take fish oils which has kept my platelets in range. -My right thumb is constantly swollen and in pain. -My stomach acid was slightly low so I've been taking 3 Betaine HCL daily but haven't noticed any improvement in digestion. -My allergies (of 52 yrs) are better since eliminating dairy in January and I'm not on meds any longer, just Quercitin 3 x daily. -My health coach says to do another round of the CBO protocol and that should help so I'll be doing that again and will just be finishing when you get this. I'm concerned I will still feel the same and won't be able to introduce foods I can actually continue eating without problems. -Please let me know if you have any thoughts you think may help.     Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions!      - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2500 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1791 On this day, Martha Ballard recorded her work as an herbalist and midwife. For 27 years, Martha kept a journal of her work as the town healer and midwife for Hallowell, Maine. In all, Martha assisted with 816 births. Today, Martha's marvelous journal gives us a glimpse into the plants she regularly used and how she applied them medicinally. As for how Martha sourced her plants, she raised them in her garden or foraged them in the wild. As the village apothecary, Martha found her ingredients and personally made all of her herbal remedies. Two hundred twenty-nine years ago today, Martha recorded her work to help her sick daughter. She wrote, My daughter Hannah is very unwell this evening. I gave her some Chamomile & Camphor.   Today we know that Chamomile has a calming effect, and Camphor can help treat skin conditions, improve respiratory function, and relieve pain.   1835 Birth of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (known by his pen name Mark Twain), American writer and humorist. Samuel used the garden and garden imagery to convey his wit and satire. In 1874, Samuel's sister, Susan, and her husband built a shed for him to write in. They surprised him with it when Samuel visited their farm in upstate New York. The garden shed was ideally situated on a hilltop overlooking the Chemung ("Sha-mung") River Valley. Like Roald Dahl, Samuel smoked as he wrote, and his sister despised his incessant pipe smoking. In this little octagonal garden/writing shed, Samuel wrote significant sections of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Prince and the Pauper, A Tramp Abroad, and many other short works. And in 1952, Samuel's octagonal shed was relocated to Elmira College ("EI-MEER-ah") campus in Elmira, New York. Today, people can visit the garden shed with student guides daily throughout the summer and by appointment in the off-season. Here are some garden-related thoughts by Mark Twain. Climate is what we expect; the weather is what we get. It was a soft, reposeful summer landscape, as lovely as a dream and as lonesome as Sunday. To get the full value of joy You must have someone to divide it with. After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the garden with her than inside it without her.   1874 Birth of Lucy Maud Montgomery, Canadian writer and author of the Anne of Green Gables series. Lucy was born on Prince Edward Island and was almost two years old when her mother died. Like her character in Ann of Green Gables, Lucy had an unconventional upbringing when her father left her to be raised by her grandparents. Despite being a Canadian literary icon and loved worldwide, Lucy's personal life was marred by loneliness, death, and depression. Historians now believe she may have ended her own life. Yet we know that flowers and gardening were a balm to Lucy. She grew lettuce, peas, carrots, radish, and herbs in her kitchen garden. And Lucy had a habit of going to the garden after finishing her writing and chores about the house. Today in Norval, a place Lucy lived in her adult life, the Lucy Maud Montgomery Sensory Garden is next to the public school. The Landscape Architect, Eileen Foley, created the garden, which features an analemmatic (horizontal sundial), a butterfly and bird garden, a children's vegetable garden, a log bridge, and a woodland trail. It was Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote, I love my garden, and I love working in it. To potter with green growing things, watching each day to see the dear, new sprouts come up, is like taking a hand in creation, I think. Just now, my garden is like faith, the substance of things hoped for.   1875 Birth of Frank Nicholas Meyer, Dutch-American plant explorer. Frank worked as an intrepid explorer for the USDA, and he traveled to Asia to find and collect new plant specimens. His work netted 2,500 new plants, including the beautiful Korean Lilac, Soybeans, Asparagus, Chinese Horse Chestnut, Water Chestnut, Oats, Wild Pears, Ginkgo Biloba, and Persimmons, to name a few. Today, Frank is most remembered for a bit of fruit named in his honor - the Meyer Lemon. Frank found it growing in the doorway to a family home in Peking. The Lemon is suspected to be a hybrid of a standard lemon and mandarin orange. Early on in his career, Frank was known as a rambler and a bit of a loner.  Frank once confessed in an October 11, 1901, letter to a friend, I am pessimistic by nature and have not found a road which leads to relaxation. I withdraw from humanity and try to find relaxation with plants.   Frank was indeed more enthusiastic about plants than his fellow humans. He even named his plants and talked to them. Once he arrived in China, Frank was overwhelmed by the flora. A believer in reincarnation, Frank wrote to David Fairchild in May 1907: [One] short life will never be long enough to find out all about this mighty land. When I think about all these unexplored areas, I get fairly dazzled... I will have to roam around in my next life.   While China offered a dazzling landscape of new plant discoveries, the risks and realities of exploration were hazardous. Edward B. Clark spoke of Frank's difficulties in Technical World in July 1911. He said, Frank has frozen and melted alternately as the altitudes have changed. He has encountered wild beasts and men nearly as wild. He has scaled glaciers and crossed chasms of dizzying depths. He has been the subject of the always-alert suspicions of government officials and strange peoples - jealous of intrusions into their land, but he has found what he was sent for.   Frank improved the diversity and quality of American crops with his exceptional ability to source plants that would grow in the various growing regions of the United States. He was known for his incredible stamina. Unlike many of his peers who were carried in sedan chairs, Frank walked on his own accord for tens of miles daily. And his ability to walk for long distances allowed him to access many of the most treacherous and inaccessible parts of interior Asia - including China, Korea, Manchuria, and Russia. Frank died on his trip home to America. He had boarded a steamer and sailed down the Yangtze River. His body was found days later floating in the river. To this day, his death remains a mystery. But his final letters home expressed loneliness, sadness, and exhaustion. He wrote that his responsibilities seemed "heavier and heavier." The life of a Plant Explorer was anything but easy.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Wood by John Lewis-Stempel  This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is The Life and Times of Cockshutt Wood. John Lewis-Stempel is a farmer and a countryside writer - he prefers that title to 'nature writer.' The Times calls him Britain's finest living nature writer. Country Life calls him "one of the best nature writers of his generation.' His books include the Sunday Times bestsellers The Running Hare and The Wood. He is the only person to have won the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing twice, with Meadowland and Where Poppies Blow. In 2016 he was Magazine Columnist of the Year for his column in Country Life. He lives in Herefordshire ("heh-ruh-frd-shr") with his wife and two children. And The Wood was a BBC Radio 4 'Book of the Week'  The Wood is written in diary format, making the whole reading experience more intimate and lyrical. John shares his take on all four seasons in the English woodlands, along with lots of wonderful nuggets culled from history and experience. And I might add that John is a kindred spirit in his love of poetry and folklore. John spent four years managing Cockshutt wood - three and a half acres of mixed woodland in southwest Herefordshire. The job entailed pruning trees and raising livestock (pigs and cows roam free in the woods).  John wrote of the peace and privacy afforded him by his time in the woods. Cockshutt was a sanctuary for me too; a place of ceaseless seasonal wonder where I withdrew into tranquility. No one comes looking for you in wood.   The Woods covers John's last year as the manager of Cockshutt. The publisher writes,  [By then], he had come to know it from the bottom of its beech roots to the tip of its oaks, and to know all the animals that lived there the fox, the pheasants, the wood mice, the tawny owl - and where the best bluebells grew.  For many fauna and flora, woods like Cockshutt are the last refuge. It proves a sanctuary for John too. To read The Wood is to be amongst its trees as the seasons change, following an easy path until, suddenly the view is broken by a screen of leaves, or your foot catches on a root, or bird startles overhead. This is a wood you will never want to leave.   The Wood starts in December - making it the perfect holiday gift or winter gift. John writes about the bare trees and the gently falling snow. The landscape becomes still and silent.  John writes, Oddly aware, walking through the wood this afternoon, that it is dormant rather than dead. How the seeds. the trees and hibernating animals....are locked in a safe sleep against the coldand wet.   By January, the Wood stirs to life with the arrival of snowdrops. If snowdrops are appearing, then the earth must be wakening. Of all our wildflowers the white hells are the purest, the most ethereal. the most chaste... Whatever: the snowdrop says that winter is not forever.   As The Wood takes you through an entire year, the book ends as another winter approaches. The trees are losing their leaves. Animals are preparing for their long sleep. John is preparing to leave the woods for his next chapter as well. Looking back, he writes,  I thought the trees and the birds belonged to me. But now I  realize that I belonged to them.   This book is 304 pages of a joyful, poetic, and soul-stirring time in the woods with the elegantly articulate John Lewis-Stempel as your guide - he's part forest sprite with a dash of delightful nature-soaked tidbits. You can get a copy of The Wood by John Lewis-Stempel and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $6.   Botanic Spark 1936 On this day, the Crystal Palace in London was destroyed by fire. The spectacular blaze was seen from miles away.  Joseph Paxton, the English gardener, architect, and Member of Parliament designed the Crystal Palace, aka the People's Palace, for the first World's Fair - the Great Exhibition of 1851. Joseph had built four elaborate glass greenhouses for the Duke of Devonshire in Chatsworth, which provided valuable experience for creating the Crystal Palace.  The Joseph Paxton biographer Kate Colquhoun wrote about the immensity of the Palace: "[Paxton's] design, initially doodled on a piece of blotting paper, was the architectural triumph of its time. Two thousand men worked for eight months to complete it. It was six times the size of St Paul's Cathedral, enclosed 18 acres, and entertained six million visitors."   The Crystal Place was an extraordinary and revolutionary building. Joseph found extra inspiration for the Palace in the natural architecture of the giant water lily. Instead of creating just a large empty warehouse for the exhibits, Joseph essentially built a massive greenhouse over the existing Hyde Park. The high central arch of the Palace - the grand barrel vault you see in all the old postcards and images of the Crystal Palace - accommodated full-sized trees that Joseph built around. Another innovative aspect of the Crystal Palace was the large beautiful columns. Joseph designed them with a purpose: drainage. By all accounts, the Crystal Palace was an enormous success until the fire started around 7 pm on this day. The manager, Sir Henry Buckland, had brought his little daughter, ironically named Chrystal, with him on his rounds of the building when he spied a small fire on one end of the Palace. Newspaper reports say the flames fanned wind through the Handel organ as the Palace burned to the ground. A sorrowful song to accompany the end of an era in plant exhibition.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.
