Podcast by White Oak Christian Church

During this series, Formed by the Word of God, we're rediscovering how Scripture leads us to Jesus and forms us for a full life. We don't read the Bible for information alone—we read it so God can transform us from the inside out. Whether you're exploring faith, returning to church, or have followed Jesus for years, there's a place for you here. https://www.thewocc.com

In this series, The Homecoming, we're exploring one of Jesus' most familiar stories and discovering how it speaks to our identity, our formation, and our longing to belong. Whether we've wandered far away, stayed close but grown resentful, or are unsure where we stand, this story reminds us that formation begins when we learn to see ourselves as sons and daughters of God. Throughout the series, we'll look honestly at the ways rebellion, resentment, and self-reliance shape our lives, and how the Father's initiating love invites us into freedom, restoration, and transformation. This journey isn't about trying harder, but about arranging our lives around Jesus and allowing His love to form us from the inside out. If this service is meaningful to you, consider sharing the link with someone who may need encouragement today. In today's message, Elder Brother Leaves, Kevin Smith explores the often-overlooked side of the Prodigal Son story. We're invited to examine how comparison, resentment, and self-righteousness can quietly take root in faithful lives—and how grace calls us back to joy, freedom, and deeper formation. This is a message for anyone who has ever felt, “That's not fair,” and wondered what God might be forming beneath the surface.

In this Formation Conversation, Kyle sits down with Charity Peter wife, mom, preschool teacher, and PTO president who's learning how to follow Jesus with boundaries, margin, and real joy. Charity shares what's been changing in her life through our Practicing the Way journey: learning that Sabbath is meant to be delight, not pressure; choosing rest with God instead of escaping; and creating space to hear God's voice by living with more intention (her word of the year: “no”). You'll hear Charity talk about: Why she deleted Instagram (and what it revealed in her heart) How to recognize when you're not resting, you're escaping “Spontaneous Sabbath” and learning to slow down without perfect prep Confession + Scripture as life-giving practices How God has been stirring her heart for the poor through her kids' school A simple challenge: offer God your favorite part of the day At White Oak, formation means being formed into the image of Christ for the sake of others and Charity's story is a grounded picture of what that can look like in real life. Why do we so often look for life outside the place we belong? This week, we explore the moment the younger son leaves home and what that choice reveals about our own hearts. Even when we run away, home is always open. Many of us search for love, purpose, and acceptance in places that were never meant to give them. This message invites us to listen again for the voice that calls us beloved and to remember that we are loved enough to leave, but always welcomed home. Welcome to Week 1 of our Christmas series, A Weary World Rejoices. Today we begin with the first rhythm of Sabbath: Stop. Like the shepherds who were interrupted on the night Jesus was born, we're learning to pause long enough to notice what God is doing. In a world shaped by hurry, Jesus invites us to be still and rediscover the hope found in His presence.

In this Formation Conversation, Steve shares how God has been shaping him through seasons of transition, quiet practices, and a deeper awareness of God's presence in his everyday life. Steve opens up about how God used trials such as job loss, uncertainty, and caring for loved ones to form him into someone who trusts more fully and fears less often. Through simple rhythms like morning Scripture, intentional quiet, listening, and unhurried presence, God has softened his pace and strengthened his confidence in Him. These daily rhythms have helped Steve learn how to hear God's voice more clearly. He also tells the incredible story of God's healing in his family. This moment reshaped his understanding of God's nearness and power. Today, Steve is learning what it means to show up for people with no agenda. He seeks to be present, compassionate, and curious. His journey reminds us that God forms us slowly and consistently. Often this happens through ordinary moments we are tempted to rush past. Steve continues to lean into community, Scripture, and the daily practice of being with Jesus. His story invites all of us, no matter our age or season of life, to slow down, listen, and trust that God is forming us even when we do not see it yet. ⸻ Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:00 Rapid Fire Questions 03:00 What Steve Is Learning Right Now 07:00 Listening as a Spiritual Practice 10:00 Community With No Agenda 12:30 Daily Rhythms of Presence 15:00 Becoming Aware of God in Ordinary Life 18:00 Job Loss, Trials, and Trusting God 23:00 Quiet, Rest, and an Unhurried Soul 27:00 Fear, Worry, and Spiritual Battle 31:00 The Incredible Story of Steve's Mom 36:00 Living With Confidence in God 42:00 Encouragement for Your Own Journey 45:00 Closing Thoughts ⸻ This story is part of White Oak's Formation Journey. In a world where dishonesty is the default and truth feels like a revolutionary act, Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He teaches that our words should align with our actions, reflecting integrity and love. Oaths, which were once used to add weight to promises, only exist because of the prevalence of lies. Jesus calls us to speak simply and truthfully, recognizing that God is always present as the ultimate witness to our words. When we live out the truth, we live in alignment with God's character, and our integrity becomes a testimony of His faithfulness.

What would it look like to live a life that moves with Jesus? All summer long, we're exploring the spiritual rhythms that shaped Jesus' life—and learning how they can reshape ours. Because every one of us is being formed by something. But when we intentionally build the practices of Jesus into our daily lives, we begin to reflect Him more fully from the inside out. Each week, we'll identify a broken system that harms the soul—things like hurry, consumerism, or self-reliance—and replace it with one of Jesus' practices: surrender, worship, prayer, service, rest, and more. These rhythms are more than habits—they're invitations to slow down, make space, and be transformed.

Now, as a woman rooted in Scripture and prayer, Michelle reflects on how her rhythms with God have brought peace she never imagined—and how you can find the same in your own life. In this Formation Conversation, we sit down with Michelle to hear how God has been forming her over two decades—from heartbreak and a painful beginning, to the redemptive journey of raising her son Caleb. Michelle found herself overwhelmed, scarred, and alone—carrying the weight of trauma and an unplanned pregnancy. She didn't know how she would raise a child on her own, or how to find hope again. But what began in chaos slowly became a story of unexpected grace. Because in time, God would use her son to lead her to faith. Michelle shares: What it felt like to navigate single motherhood while working multiple jobs The moment her toddler invited her to church—and everything began to shift How rhythms of Scripture, prayer journaling, and worship help her stay rooted today The faith communities that showed up and helped raise both her and her son And the peace she now experiences in this new season of life as an empty nester Whether you're in the middle of a storm or just coming out of one, Michelle's story reminds us that God meets us in the mess—and forms us through it. Timestamps 00:00 – Introduction: Meet Michelle 01:15 – Rapid-fire questions: Coffee, hiking, music, and motherhood 07:35 – Spiritual rhythms: Scripture after work and worship while driving 12:45 – Giving birth, facing a decision, and the moment she fell in love with her son 17:00 – Caleb's invitation: “Mom, you've got to come to church” 20:00 – When the bus ministry showed up at her apartment 23:00 – Getting saved and baptized together with her son 25:00 – Realizing God was writing a love story 27:00 – Learning to pray—for others, even strangers 28:15 – Her current rhythm: Devotional, prayer journal, color-coded Scripture 33:30 – Encouragement for those unsure how to start praying 36:00 – Being shaped by her faith community 38:00 – Recent verses that are anchoring her now 40:00 – A new season of peace as an empty nester 44:00 – Watching Caleb now serve and lead others 47:00 – Final encouragement: “Just try it.
