Hey, Colerain! They say positivity and generosity are contagious. That's especially true when it comes to Colerain H.O.P.E., a group of non-profits with one mission: make Colerain a better, kinder place to live.We spoke to Gail Nolte and Dale Beck from Side by Side about how Colerain H.O.P.E. got started, how residents can benefit from this, and their goals for 2024.
Since the 1800s, German settlers have been immigrating to the Greater Cincinnati area, bringing their rich culture with them. From music to food and even many of our churches, you can still see the influence of our German heritage today. So in honor of Oktoberfest, we're going to take a look at just how much of our daily lives here in Colerain Township is influenced by our German ancestors. To help is Bernie Rau, a prominent Germania Society member and German native.
This month on "Hey! Colerain," I'm joined by Gary Henson. Gary is a US Air Force veteran and a member of the Coleraine Historical Society. He's going to help give us a look at veteran activity in Colerain Township's past and talk about why it's such a veteran-friendly place to live, even today.
Winton Woods (12-1) was a Division II regional semifinalist last season after the Warriors won the 2021 state title. "This team has a lot of experience returning," Murphy said. "The thing I like most is they've felt what it's like to hoist a trophy after 16 weeks in 2021 and to turn equipment in after Week 13 (in 2022)." Winton Woods returns several key players including senior quarterback Van George, senior wide receiver Tra'mar Harris (Purdue verbal commit) and junior offensive tackle Raphael Greene, one of Ohio's top players in the 2025 class. The defense is led by several players including defensive tackle Cameron Jackson, who is a three-year starter. Defensive tackle Delan Massey-Wright was a Division II first-team all-state player in 2022. Junior linebacker Justin Hill - one of Ohio's top players in the 2025 class - has several significant scholarship offers including Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Notre Dame. The Warriors also feature senior Zae Jennings, a West Virginia verbal commit, who played quarterback at Colerain last season. We welcome guests Lyndsey Creecy, the public relations supervisor for the Northwest Local School District; Denney Hirsch, a Colerain High School graduate (class of '64); and Greg Stanley, a lifelong Colerain Township resident and Colerain High School graduate (class of 1975).We learn more about how our school system went from being several one-room schoolhouses to the powerhouse it is today.
Two Firefighters die in a residential fire after becoming disoriented in heavy fire conditions and the floor collapses, on April 4th, 2008.
A 26-year-old pregnant woman was shot in Colerain Township early Saturday morning, according to Colerain police. Officers responded around 4:39 a.m. to the 2300 block of Hidden Meadows Drive for a reported shooting, police said in a news release. Once on the scene, police found #IndiaKinamore suffering from a gunshot wound, the release states. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Kinamore was in the late stages of pregnancy and her unborn baby died as well. Anyone with information regarding Kinamore's death should contact Sergeant Mike Stockmeier at 513-321-2677. Mary Ada White Wooten Joyner, passed away January 11th, 2023. She was born September 17, 1930 near Colerain, North Carolina, to Richard Carson and Lossie Dunn White. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Lossie White; her first husband, Charles Wooten; two baby sons; siblings, Etta, Ethel, Virginia, Lenora, Luther, Ruth and Rachael; and grandson, Sean France. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Eugene Hunter Joyner; sister, Grace Robinson; daughters, Pamela White (Johnny), Sherry Herrell, Ramona Browning (Frank), son Russell (Maureen), 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. The Mason High School football program is all about unity this season. The Comets (3-1, 3-0 Greater Miami Conference) have certainly fulfilled that theme the first half of this regular season. "They wanted to become the tightest team in Mason history," Comets coach Brian Castner said. "They want to be able to have the legacy of 'Man, that team had phenomenal chemistry because they loved one another and they wanted to be tight.'" Castner was a featured guest on this week's WCPO High School Insider podcast as he discussed how his team bonded this summer, including how it addressed mental health, leadership and other lessons that set the foundation for the team to thrive on the field the past four weeks. "I've always said I'm going to make you a better person before I make you a better player," Castner said. "And this program is going to make us better people before it make us better players. Chemistry is huge." Castner said he was emotional after the Comets' first win over Colerain in program history Sept. 9. "I can't say enough good things about them," Castner said. The evening of March 21, 2003 was normal for the crew of Colerain, Ohio Township's Engine 26. The guys were cleaning up after dinner. Then the dispatcher interrupted them with a call to a structure fire. When they arrived on scene, the crew found a single-family residence with flames showing. Police said there might be someone trapped inside. Lt. Steve Conn and a rookie partner made entry and began to search. Minutes later, Steve found himself in a world of trouble. What happened next taught him a lot about dealing with mayday situations and their aftermath. Steve Conn is a battalion chief and a public information officer for the Colerain Township, Ohio, Department of Fire and EMS where he has served for over 30 years. He is also a registered nurse with 30 years of experience in interventional cardiology.
In 2008, Firefighters from Colerain Township (Hamilton Co, OH) Fire Captain Robin Zang Broxterman, 37-years-old, a 17-year veteran career Firefighter and Paramedic, and Firefighter Brian Schira, 29-years-old, a 6 month probationary, part-time Firefighter and EMT with Colerain Township Fire & EMS both died in the Line of Duty after the floor they were on collapsed into the burning basement at a residential fire.We talk to Fire Chief Allen Walls about the recovery process after this LODD and the implementation of Blue Card in his department. Allen Walls is a twenty-seven-year veteran of the fire service holding the rank of firefighter/paramedic, Captain – Operations, Division Chief of Training, Battalion Chief – Operations, Assistant Chief of Administration, Assistant Chief of Operations, and currently Chief of Department with Colerain Fire and EMS. Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP) Graduate and has a Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership from Union Institute and University. He served on the Preliminary Report Committee and the Final Report Committee for the Squirrelsnest Lane Firefighter Line of Duty Deaths.
