This Sunday we wrap up our Advent series, From Fear To Freedom, with Pastor Grant Harris bringing us a message on Love, preaching out of Luke 2:8-14. Grant will be looking at the response of the shepherds (that of terror!) and unpacks how their story connects to three key themes we've encountered throughout this series: action, words, and praise.
Chapter 1:Summary of The Art of Loving"The Art of Loving," written by Erich Fromm and first published in 1956, explores the nature of love and its significance in human life. Fromm argues that love is not just a feeling but an art that requires knowledge, effort, and practice. He identifies different forms of love, including romantic love, brotherly love, self-love, and love for God, while emphasizing that authentic love transcends mere emotional attachment.Key concepts from the book include:1. Love as an Art: Fromm asserts that love is an art that must be mastered, requiring discipline, concentration, and patience. Like any art form, it involves practice and continuous learning.2. Types of Love: Fromm categorizes love into several types:- Eros: Romantic love characterized by passionate attraction.- Brotherly Love: Unconditional love for others, emphasizing solidarity and empathy.- Self-Love: Understanding and valuing oneself, which is essential for the ability to love others.- Motherly and Fatherly Love: These reflect nurturing qualities and the balance of giving and receiving.3. Societal Influence: Fromm discusses how society, especially in capitalist cultures, often distorts love into a commodity or self-serving mechanism. He critiques the way consumerism affects personal relationships and emotional connections.4. The Importance of Freedom: Love involves freedom and independence, which allows individuals to connect with others authentically rather than seeking to possess or control them.5. Active Love: Fromm concludes that love is an active practice rather than a passive experience. It involves care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge, reflecting a deep commitment to the growth and well-being of oneself and others.Overall, "The Art of Loving" emphasizes that true love fosters personal growth and fulfillment and is essential for meaningful relationships in an increasingly alienated world. Through love, Fromm believes individuals can transcend loneliness and isolation, achieving deeper connections with themselves and others.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Art of Loving"The Art of Loving" by Erich Fromm is a philosophical work that explores the nature of love, its various forms, and the conditions necessary for its genuine expression. Below are key plot points, character development aspects, and thematic ideas central to the book: Key Plot Points1. Definition of Love: Fromm begins by discussing love's importance in human life, emphasizing that it is an art that requires practice and effort, much like any other art form.2. Types of Love: Fromm identifies several types of love, including romantic love, brotherly love, motherly love, self-love, and love for God, analyzing how each type manifests and its implications for interpersonal relationships.3. Love as an Active Process: He posits that love should be seen not as a passive experience or an emotion but as an active practice that involves care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge.4. Critique of Modern Society: Fromm critiques contemporary societal values, arguing that consumerism, isolation, and egoism inhibit authentic love. He suggests that societal structures often promote superficial relationships rather than deep emotional connections.5. The Role of Freedom: The book discusses the paradox of freedom in love, where genuine love can flourish only in a context of freedom and mutual respect. However, modern individuals may feel scared of freedom, leading them to seek connections that are not true expressions of love.6. Path to Mastering the Art: Fromm describes the journey toward mastering the art of loving, emphasizing the cultivation of self-awareness, maturity, and the ability to engage in a relationship with another person meaningfully. Character Development...

David Harris is an Australian actor who somehow found himself moving from architecture school to the bright lights of Broadway. He shares his early passion for architecture and how he pivoted to a career in performing arts just three days into his studies. He looks back on his journey, including participating in talent quests at RSL clubs in Australia and having friendly competitions with Broadway performer Ricky Rojas. Being in the workshop and eventually being cast in "The Boy From Oz" marked a significant turning point in his career and what he considers his claim to fame. He reminisces about his experience working with Hugh Jackman in the show, and a memorable commercial shoot with him just before New York shut down for COVID (click here to watch). David reflects on the differences in how musical theatre is perceived in Australia, the UK, and the US, his personal experiences with it, and his frustrations with the lack of recognition for musical theatre actors in Australia compared to Broadway performers in the US. He emphasizes the critical importance of swings and understudies in theatre, and his gratitude for them in keeping the show running smoothly. While he's already managed to prove naysayers wrong, David has no plans on stopping when it comes to the pursuit of growth and constant learning. David Harris is a native of Australia, where he's one of the most acclaimed leading men of his generation. In the US, he has received critical praise for his performance of Dan in TheatreWorks' “Next to Normal”. He starred as Jean Valjean in the Connecticut Repertory Theatre production of “Les Misérables”, which was co-starred and directed by Tony Award winner Terrence Mann. He starred as Billy Crocker in Goodspeed's production of “Anything Goes” and as Father in Barrington Stage Company's “Ragtime” in 2017. He originated the role of Max Bronfman in Stephen Schwartz's new production of “Rags” at Goodspeed Opera House. After playing the role of the Duke on the first national tour of “Moulin Rouge” in 2022, he can now be seen playing the same role in “Moulin Rouge” on Broadway. Resources: Dr. Henry Cloud's new book: "Why I Believe" Online platform with courses by Dr. Cloud Dr. Cloud's book, Necessary Endings Leslie's Quick Start Guide: Find out if you're in a destructive relationship In today's episode, Leslie Vernick sits down with Dr. Henry Cloud, the acclaimed leadership expert, clinical psychologist, and best-selling author known for his influential books "Boundaries" and "Necessary Endings." With over 45 years of experience, Dr. Cloud has helped millions integrate faith and psychology into their lives. In this enlightening conversation, Leslie and Dr. Cloud discuss his newest book, "Why I Believe," a deeply personal narrative that diverges from his usual clinical and business-focused writings. This book delves into Dr. Cloud's journey of faith, his childhood experiences, and the profound moments that shaped his spiritual beliefs. Key Points: Introduction to Dr. Henry Cloud: Leslie introduces Dr. Cloud, highlighting his significant contributions through his books and his integration of faith and psychology. Dr. Cloud's credentials: best-selling author, leadership expert, and clinical psychologist with over 45 years of experience. The Motivation Behind "Why I Believe": Dr. Cloud shares the impetus for writing a book about his faith journey at this point in his life. Initial intention to create a small pamphlet for his friends, which evolved into a full-fledged book due to the widespread need among Christians to share their faith. Dr. Cloud's Personal Faith Journey: Growing up in a Southern Methodist home with a faith that was real but not front and center. His struggles with depression and a turning point during his college years when he earnestly sought God. Miraculous Experiences: Dr. Cloud recounts miraculous experiences, including finding a pastor's house through divine guidance and the profound moment of feeling God's presence in his car. How these experiences affirmed his belief in God despite not immediately curing his depression. Intellectual Obstacles and Resolution: Addressing intellectual challenges such as the existence of suffering and the relationship between science and scripture. Dr. Cloud's deep dive into various scientific fields and his conclusion that there is no conflict between science and the Bible when approached without atheistic presuppositions. Integration of Psychology and Scripture: Dr. Cloud's perspective on how psychological science validates biblical teachings. The inclusion of personal miracle stories in his book to illustrate the tangible impact of faith. The Problem of Evil and Suffering: Leslie and Dr. Cloud address the age-old question: If God is good and real, why does He allow suffering, especially the suffering of innocent people? Dr. Cloud explains that the root cause lies in the concept of free will. God created humans with the freedom to love Him or reject Him, and this freedom extends to all human actions, including harmful ones. The Nature of Love and Freedom: Love cannot exist without freedom. Just as in human relationships, love must be freely given and received; otherwise, it is not true love. God set boundaries to guide humans, but the freedom to choose remains, leading to both good and evil actions. God's Foreknowledge and Plan: While God knew the potential for evil, He also prepared a plan for redemption through Jesus Christ, even before the foundation of the world. The presence of evil and suffering is part of the larger narrative of freedom and redemption. God's Presence in Suffering: Dr. Cloud shares a powerful testimony of a man who envisioned Jesus taking his place during a beating from his father, illustrating that Jesus deeply empathizes with our suffering. Jesus' identification with our pain and His presence in our suffering provides a profound sense of comfort and solidarity. Addressing Intellectual and Emotional Challenges: Dr. Cloud acknowledges that intellectual answers often fall short of providing emotional satisfaction when it comes to understanding suffering. He emphasizes the importance of trusting in God's infinite love and wisdom, even when we cannot comprehend His ways fully. Role of the Church and Community: The importance of the church's role in standing against abuse and supporting victims. Dr. Cloud critiques the misuse of scripture to justify abusive relationships and encourages victims to seek help from compassionate and understanding leaders. Empowerment and Responsibility: God has delegated the responsibility to humans to act against evil and support those in need. Encouragement for individuals and communities to step up and make a difference in the lives of those who are suffering. Encouragement for Victims: Dr. Cloud offers heartfelt advice to victims of abuse, emphasizing the importance of seeking safety and help. He highlights the significance of finding supportive communities and leaders who will stand against abuse and provide the necessary support.

What does living in freedom mean?In this episode, Rachel sits down with Dan Gahagan, Unbound board member and Baltimore native, to discuss Dan's ties with Unbound Ministry that began fifteen years ago. They reflect on Dan's personal experience of renouncing the enemy's lies and choosing to walk in the freedom of the Gospel every single day. "I developed the self-perception that I was not good, that I don't measure up, and that I don't have what it takes."After Dan renounced these lies, he began to walk in the things that God had held for him that he had previously shied away from.Unbound shows people who their enemy is and brings it into the light, where it loses its power. Once you understand the Five Keys as a proclamation of the Gospel, they become a powerful tool in your walk with the Lord. What lies has the enemy told you that you still identify with? What do you need to repent of? Who do you need to forgive? What do you need to renounce? "Today, I walk in the knowledge and understanding that I am loved, that I am a beloved son of the Father."Learn about our Catholic Priest Retreat and find other Unbound eventsJoin our mission and donate today!Check out Unboound and find other resourcesFind an Unbound team near youLike us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramExplore with us on TwitterRelease: May 2023Music by Christian HarperArtwork by Rosemary Strohm at Command-S

Season 3 is all about learning how to love ourselves and each other every day in practical ways. We're not talking about five love languages or how each Enneagram type prefers to be loved. We're talking about the God-given needs that we wake up with every day because we are human, not because we're weak or wounded or wired in a way that's unique to our personality. Our God-given needs are the places we can receive love, and experiencing love makes life deeply satisfying! In this episode, we unpack all the ways love meets our God-given need for protection. Without protection, we'll be left vulnerable to unresolved habits because we didn't trust the love that was offered to keep us safe--or because we didn't recognize the protection that was offered to us as love. Many of us don't want to be protected. Just like a new puppy who wants to explore, we'll dig under the fence to experience a bigger world, and most of the time, we come home wounded or confused. Or we don't come home at all. Love offers us a way home. Protective love is a “jealous FOR me” love that offers to keep us safe from what we're not meant to live with, in the ways of bondage and abuse. When we prioritize building trust in our relationships, we can experience the full and free life we were created to enjoy. Join us on this episode and linger in these takeaways: Permission almost always happens in a conversation. It's one reason the habit of mature conversations is a big deal. Protection often happens in the way we create the environment we live in. Love creates an environment for growth. We often don't think of protection as love. But when we trust it and begin to experience freedom, instead of bondage, we will recognize that we have loved. Have learned the joys and power in delegation? If not or you struggle in this area this episode is for you! Freedom Love'n Zach Babcock, an Alpha Underdog who flipped his life around after 5 years in prison. He is the host of the highly in-demand, Underdog Empowerment podcast, where he's documented his come up, even before his entrepreneurial success. Zach is, also, the founder of Podcast Powertrain; where he and his team help alpha entrepreneurs create dominant brands with top-rated podcasts. He has also founded the Convicted Life podcast, which airs into prisons to help change the life of inmates while they are transforming for successes after their time. Zach doesn't have all the answers, nobody does, yet he sticks his neck on the line every day and shares what he discovers in the process. He gets around the greatest minds in the game to bring you the best and most crucial tips and tricks for your success. Through a hard journey and many trials, Zach began building his business. When he got out of prison it was time to get to work. He got out of prison on October 2nd, 2014. His journey has not been easy, and due to this he got into entrepreneurship, as he didn't have many options. Plus, he liked the idea of betting on himself. However, it was a struggle, and he barely got by. He did network marketing for 2 years, made almost $2k a month within his first 6 months, but that just wasn't his thing. Therefore, his business crumbled, and he left after 2 years. At the very beginning of 2017, he became a ‘life coach'. He didn't make a single penny or help anybody as a life coach because he needed a clearer message to give. Every time he tried to collaborate with anyone, nobody took him seriously. Rather, he was just some ex-convict turned entrepreneur afterthought that nobody gave the time of day to. Boy how things have changed for Zach… In this episode, Zach will walk you through how he journeyed from 60+ hour work weeks down to a 15 hour a week work schedule. How he has found joy in having more freedom to be with his kids and family and having more time in the woods on Fridays. As well as, how to get your team to voice their opinions and seeing their value through taking ownership of the work, to build leaders in your organization. It's important to realize how powerful we are. Freedom is addictive. A very strange coma story. FEMA zones look like targets with a bullseye. The chaos at the center. Blatant ballot misreads are the latest evidence. We need to take hold of the situation. You can't change human genetics without knowing about humans. Little do they know what they have in store. So many are just lost in space. Harder, stronger and faster is the strategy. It's your community, city, state and nation, so do what you know is best. Interview with Visually Impaired artist and mother, Shellyann Siddoo. Meditation at the end on Love, Freedom and Peace, recognizing the world that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. strived for. About Shellyann: Shellyann Siddoo is a visually impaired, self-taught Toronto, Ontario based artist. After losing her eyesight from a lab accident at the age of twenty- four, Shellyann was faced with many challenges as you can imagine. She lost her independence, her job, the ability to do day to day activities on her own. The life she knew no longer existed. Shellyann her felt trapped in a dark world. She wanted a way to fill her life with colours even if she couldn’t see it. In 2010, Shellyann started painting with her knuckles because after the accident her hands were in a fist. Gradually over time, she figured out a way to hold the paint brush more comfortably without causing more pain to hands, and that’s when she started exploring different painting techniques. Shellyann would spend hours on end at night learning techniques on how to paint and then would apply it during the day. Her journey to becoming an artist was not an easy one, but with faith, determination, hard work, persistence and love, she made it possible. Now, Shellyann is inspiring others to go after their goals and dreams.
LOVE is powerful and consequently HATE is weak. Jesus said, ...Love your enemies... Matthew 5:44 Whether you believe Him to be the literal Son of God or not doesn't really matter. His words themselves are powerful. In self-defense we see first in purpose then in application this to be true. In self-defense LOVING your enemy or attacker vs HATING is also known to be more powerful. When a defender allows HATE to consume them they physically, mentally and emotionally “give away” or waste energy. Muscles tense, strategies and defensive techniques go out the window and blind furry steps in. The literal loss of energy is a disadvantage. Therefore HATE weakens us. While being at peace through LOVE relaxes muscles, clams breathing and literally makes us faster, focused and more powerful. In The World of FREEDOM, LOVE is more powerful than HATE! Galatians 5:13-1513 For you were called to freedom, brothers.Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through loveserve one another.14 Forthe whole law is fulfilled in one word:“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Purpose of Freedom: Love 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers.Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through loveserve one another.14 Forthe whole law is fulfilled in one word:“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” We are set free so that we can love free. 1. Personal Relationship2. Kingdom Partnership How do we respond to our freedom in Christ? (Three Responses) PROTECT 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers.Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. How can we protect our freedom? 1. Repent a. Jeremiah 15:19 “If you repent, I will restore you.”b. Luke 3:8 “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” c. I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness2. Resist James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” 3. Remain John 15:4Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. PROCEED 1. James 1:25 “But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-he will be blessed in what he does.” Ephesians 3:12 “In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.” PROCLAIM Luke 4:18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Acts 5:42Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. Romans 15:16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Today it's just me, Theresa, talking about freedom and independence with a little help from some musicians and the book, You Are Now Less Dumb by David McRaney. Why this show? Why this format? The 4th of July stirs up lots of thoughts and feelings for me so I seek to find some answers or get clearer on the narratives that drive these thoughts and feelings. We'll dive into the Declaration of Independence, some history, a cursory overview of narrative bias and the backfire effect which is basically a biased narrative problem, and how these biases may affect how we view our history and the current events unfolding in our world today. Oh our poor, little, infallible brains!NOTE: I cannot play all these songs in their entirety on the podcast because of rights so if you want to hear the show as it aired you can catch it on Radio Kingston's website! Here's the NPR playlist that I reference, and the following songs are played in an effort to expand the base of narratives that shape our understanding of history. "Joanne Little" by Sweet Honey in the Rock, "Supper Time" by Ethel Waters, "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday, "Another Man Done Gone" and "Trouble So Hard" by Vera Hall, "Alabama" by John Coltrane, "Wade the Water to My Knees" by the McIntosh County Shouters, "Land of the Free" by Esperanza Spalding, "America" by Prince.
