Have you ever thought, I should be better by now? You've been surfing for a while, putting in the time, watching YouTube tutorials, even getting in the water more—but something's just not clicking. You feel stuck, and no matter how much effort you put in, you're not progressing the way you want.I know that frustration because I've been there too. Surfing is unlike any other sport—you don't get endless reps, the conditions are always changing, and without the right feedback, you might just be reinforcing bad habits. I spent years feeling like I had plateaued, wondering why I wasn't improving, until I figured out what actually works. In this episode of Confessions of a Surf Lady: The First Women's Surfing Podcast™, we talk about why progression in surfing is so difficult, the common mistakes that keep surfers stuck, and what actually makes a difference. Plus, I'll share how The Surf Société was born out of my own frustration—because I needed a place where I could get real feedback, guidance, and a community to help me progress. If you're tired of feeling stuck, this episode is for you.Main ThemesWhy Surfing Progression is So Damn Hard“Surfing isn't like skating or snowboarding. You don't get unlimited reps. Every session is different, and you can't just practice the same maneuver 50 times in a row.” – Laura DayWhy YouTube & Instagram Advice Might Be Making It Worse“I'd get so hyped watching a tutorial—then I'd go out, and my wave looked nothing like the perfect, empty lineup in the video.” – Laura DayThe Myth That Surfing More = Getting Better“If you're just reinforcing the same bad habits, more water time isn't going to magically fix them.” – Laura DayThe Reality of In-Person Coaching (And Why It's Not Always the Answer)“I paid $250 for a coaching session, and the conditions were terrible. Things don't always go as planned in life and in business. It's important for property management entrepreneurs to be able to roll with the punches. In this episode of the #DoorGrowShow, property management experts Jason and Sarah Hull discuss a recent experience where they were forced to pivot and adapt over and over again. You'll Learn [01:58] The Original Plan [05:31] How a Winter Storm Distrupted a Business and Family Trip [08:52] Moral of the Story: Be Prepared [11:08] Your Plan is Not Always the Right Plan for You Tweetables “Moral of the story is be prepared.” “This is how businesses work. [00:00:09] Sarah: There may be a reason that you're not experiencing the results that you thought that you would at this stage in the game.  [00:00:17] Jason: Welcome DoorGrow property managers to the #DoorGrowShow. If you are a property management entrepreneur that wants to add doors, make a difference, increase revenue, help others, impact lives, and you are interested in growing in business and life, and you're open to doing things a bit differently, then you are a DoorGrow property manager. [00:00:35] Jason: DoorGrow property managers love the opportunities, daily variety, unique challenges, and freedom that property management brings. Many in real estate think you're crazy for doing it. You think they're crazy for not because you realize that property management is the ultimate, high trust gateway to real estate deals, relationships, and residual income. [00:00:54] Jason: At DoorGrow, we are on a mission to transform property management business owners and their businesses. We want to transform the industry, eliminate the BS, build awareness, change perception, expand the market, and help the best property management entrepreneurs win. We're your hosts, property management growth experts, Jason Hull and Sarah Hull. Now let's get into the show. Alright. [00:01:16] Jason: So, today we are recording this episode at, what time is it now?  [00:01:22] Sarah: It is almost midnight.  [00:01:23] Jason: It is late. On Monday. And this will go live or be streamed later. And so if you're watching this, thanks for watching. And we're not actually like real time live at this moment, but it's because we had to change things up and make different plans.  [00:01:42] Sarah: Live in the moment, we're probably still in the car.  [00:01:45] Jason: Yeah, so we will be driving tomorrow during our podcast episode. So we wanted to record this episode real quick so we can get one out. And in today's topic, we're just going to share a little bit of our adventure. And, you know, the moral of the story will be things don't always go according to plan. [00:02:03] Jason: So.  [00:02:04] Sarah: Sure don't.  [00:02:05] Jason: Alright, so, where do we start?  [00:02:08] Sarah: Alright, well, let's do quick synopsis. Where are we right now? Ohio, I think? I'm pretty sure we're in Ohio.  [00:02:15] Jason: I think so.  [00:02:16] Sarah: I think it's Ohio is the right answer. So, we've been to, in the last few days, we left on Friday, we've been to Texas, we've been to two days in Tennessee, we accidentally went to Kentucky, now we're in Ohio, tomorrow we're going to Pennsylvania. [00:02:30] Sarah: So, I think that's five states. Five states in five days. It's a great time. So, we're driving from Texas to Pennsylvania. It's supposed to be a straight shot, up like this. And it's this crazy record breaking winter storm, and we're driving through some of that. We're missing the big part of it. [00:02:51] Sarah: So we had to adjust our route. So our plan, this was our plan, was to leave on Friday. We're going from Texas to Memphis, Tennessee. Then the next morning, we were going to go to Graceland. We did do that, and then we spent some time in Nashville that evening. And then from Nashville, we were going to go to Morganstown, West Virginia, and then from there, drive into Dallas, Pennsylvania. [00:03:18] Sarah: So, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, we were supposed to get to Pennsylvania on Monday, which is tonight, we are not in Pennsylvania. We are, I'm pretty sure, somewhere in Ohio, past Akron. And where, what's the name of this?  [00:03:32] Jason: Youngstown.  [00:03:33] Sarah: Youngstown, near Youngstown. That's where we are, right now. And so that was our plan. And then because of this crazy storm, we were leaving Nashville. We left Nashville. Roads were fine. Then all of a sudden, a little bit of rain. That was okay. Then, snow. And that was awful. And we were trying to get from Nashville, Tennessee up to Morgantown, West Virginia. Did not happen. Not even close. So we were going to stop in Lexington, Kentucky for lunch around like 3 o'clock or 3:30. That was not the plan. We ended up staying in Kentucky because it took us so long to get to Kentucky because of the crazy storm that we then had to stay overnight in Lexington and then reroute. So we were going this way and now we're going that way.  [00:04:31] Jason: So do you want to share why we're doing a road trip? [00:04:34] Jason: Which is crazy to do.  [00:04:36] Sarah: It's crazy to do. I know, right? I could have flown there in a day. So we're driving my car that I've owned for a couple years now. I'm driving to Pennsylvania, and I'm giving the car to my mom as a gift. She has absolutely no idea.  [00:04:52] Jason: It's a surprise.  [00:04:53] Sarah: That this is happening. [00:04:54] Sarah: I don't think she watches the podcast.  [00:04:56] Jason: No. Probably not.  [00:04:56] Sarah: Hopefully it's safe. But I'm gifting the car to my mom. I want her to have a nice car, and a reliable car, and not have to worry about things. So, I'm gifting her the car. She has absolutely no idea. Coincidentally, it's also in a couple of days, my brother Jason's birthday. [00:05:14] Sarah: So, shout out to Jason. Happy early birthday. We love you. And we're going to do this little trip. We're going to see my family for a little bit. We're going to go out to dinner for my brother Jason's birthday. Give my mom a car, and then fly back home and we are running an event. So that's why we're doing all of this in the first place. [00:05:31] Sarah: The whole crazy part of the story here is when we left Nashville, we were trying to get to Morganstown. It was insane on the road. Just wildly insane. Like snow, ice, there was a mix, there was sleet. We were going like 40 miles an hour. I was just happy to be moving. We saw multiple cars that had run off the road. [00:05:58] Sarah: We saw a couple of tractor trailers that we're in accidents. We saw a few accidents. We were almost in a few accidents ourselves. And this trip is not at all going as planned. We had to move our flight, and then move our flight again, and then move our flight a third time. So then we, last night we almost gave up on this whole thing. [00:06:18] Sarah: I was going to quit and just leave my car in Cincinnati, fly home. back to Texas and then come back and finish the second leg of this trip a second time. Jason woke up this morning and he said, "I think we can do it, babe. I think we can do it." So here we are, but this is not...  [00:06:35] Jason: We were not prepared for this storm. [00:06:37] Jason: This car had pretty bald tires, which was... we were not ready.  [00:06:43] Sarah: No.  [00:06:43] Jason: Yeah. So after sliding off the road a little bit, twice, yeah, on a freeway.  [00:06:50] Sarah: On a freeway.  [00:06:51] Jason: On a highway. Yeah.  [00:06:52] Sarah: And car is supposed to be heading in this direction, and then it turned in.  [00:06:57] Jason: And we were just off to the side, so we were able to get back on the road safely both times. [00:07:02] Jason: Thank goodness. Yeah. And not get hit by a tractor trailer.  [00:07:05] Sarah: Yeah, we didn't get hit by anything. The car didn't get damaged. We are safe. And to that I can only thank God. The whole time I was praying, our fathers, I was saying Hail Mary's, our fathers, the whole time. I was just praying to God and God took care of us made sure that we were safe made sure the car is safe, made sure that we got where we were going, made sure we didn't get stranded in the car because we saw a couple people stranded.  [00:07:30] Jason: Yeah.  [00:07:31] Sarah: It was scary. [00:07:31] Sarah: It was really scary.  [00:07:32] Jason: We eventually pulled off and went and found a tire store  [00:07:36] Sarah: Yeah, we were going to continue out there for a while.  [00:07:38] Jason: Got new tires.  [00:07:39] Sarah: And something told me it might have been God telling me like "go, you need tires. Go get tires." So I said to Jason, I said, "Can you find...?"  [00:07:47] Sarah: Can you find? No.  [00:07:49] Jason: I wanted to get some better tires on that car, for sure. [00:07:51] Sarah: So, I said, "is there a tire place that's like, nearby, that's open right now, that we can go to right now?" So we did. Took a little pit stop detour, but it was very well worth it. I just don't think we would have made the rest of the trip in one piece.  [00:08:06] Jason: The first tire store we went to was closed.  [00:08:08] Sarah: Yeah. Like it wasn't even plowed to get to it. They were closed. The third one was a tread. So we got new tires. That's good. The guy at the tire store, what did he tell you? The tread level was like a four. It's real, it's really bad.  [00:08:21] Jason: Yeah.  [00:08:21] Sarah: It was real bad. Yeah. So, that was fun.  [00:08:23] Jason: So We got fresh tires. Then the car drove really well. [00:08:27] Jason: Plus we had pretty much made it through the worst of the weather, which we had planned. Because there were two ways we could go. The northern route had less weather, so.  [00:08:39] Sarah: Yep. That's why we're in Ohio.  [00:08:41] Jason: So.  [00:08:41] Sarah: And not through West Virginia.  [00:08:43] Jason: Yeah, we'd probably be in a very terrible spot if we had gone the wrong way. [00:08:47] Jason: So.  [00:08:47] Sarah: Yeah. We'd be off on the side of the road frozen like popsicles. Oh gosh. You guys would never hear from us again.  [00:08:52] Jason: So moral of the story is be prepared. Make sure you're prepared. Have a plan. And so we've done lots of plans and changing of plans and so this is part of life. And this is how businesses work. Your best plan is sometimes going to fail and you're going to have to come up with a new way of doing it and you're going to have to adapt. And so one thing entrepreneurs, we are good at is adaptability. We figure it out cause we have to, and we adapt. And so we've adapted a lot today. [00:09:23] Jason: And yesterday. The last couple days. Yeah, the last couple days.  [00:09:25] Sarah: We had a plan, we changed a plan, we changed that plan, we changed a plan again. We just keep changing it.  [00:09:30] Jason: And that causes us. We're just rolling with the punches. That causes us to have to adapt in business. So here we are recording a podcast. [00:09:36] Jason: Here we are.  [00:09:36] Sarah: At midnight.  [00:09:37] Jason: In a hotel room.  [00:09:37] Sarah: Which Jason did not want to do.  [00:09:39] Jason: No. No. I was like, we don't have to do anything that we don't want to do. We don't have to do this.  [00:09:44] Sarah: No. And I said, we are not recording a podcast live from the car because we might die. No.  [00:09:49] Jason: We're not going to do that.  [00:09:49] Sarah: We might die live on camera. [00:09:51] Sarah: Yeah, that would be...  [00:09:52] Jason: All right. So hopefully some of you got some value from this. If you do not have a good plan for your business, then that's something that we can help you with here at DoorGrow, help you come up with a plan, and help you adapt to some of the things that are getting thrown at your way. [00:10:09] Jason: This is why we mapped out the DoorGrow code, our roadmap, for some of the most common challenges and problems. So if you would like a copy of the DoorGrow code, just reach out to us. We'd be happy to give you one and tell you a little bit about how we might be able to help you and hear about your challenges. [00:10:24] Jason: So reach out to us. You can check us out at doorgrow.Com or go to our website or join our free Facebook group by going to doorgrowclub.Com. Make sure to answer the questions. We reject 60 to 70 percent of the applicants that try to join that group. So it's only for property management business owners. [00:10:44] Jason: So if you own a property management business or seriously planning on starting one, then you can request access to that group. Make sure to answer the questions. We would love to have you inside. And that's it.  [00:10:55] Sarah: No, that's not it. No.  [00:10:56] Jason: Oh, there's more.  [00:10:57] Sarah: That wasn't it. I said, what are we going to talk about this episode? [00:11:00] Sarah: I told you what we're going to talk about, then we just... So.  [00:11:03] Sarah: It's not the end of the episode. Surprise! A little bit more. But wait, there's more! [00:11:07] Jason: But wait, there's more.  [00:11:08] Sarah: So for those of you that do have a plan, and you're like, "yeah, no, I definitely have a plan. This is not applicable to me," we had a plan going into this as well. [00:11:17] Sarah: So, when you have a plan and life does not work out the way that you planned, and things don't work out the way that you thought that they would, and you're going through things and you're trying to figure out, you know, "what am I doing wrong? And why isn't this working? And like, why is this so hard? I don't understand why it's not happening the way that I wanted it to happen," and why it's just maybe not happening at all... [00:11:40] Sarah: or maybe it's happening, but it's just so slow, and it's so hard, then you just need to know that sometimes there's a bigger plan in place for you somewhere. And if you're religious, you might believe that God, or the universe, or fate, or whatever you might want to call it. There is a bigger plan out there for you, and there may be a reason that things are not going the way that you wanted them to go right now. [00:12:07] Sarah: There may be a reason that you're not experiencing the results that you thought that you would at this stage in the game. Just like when we thought we would go to West Virginia. Had we actually gotten to West Virginia, we'd be stranded there for sure, because they are getting hammered with snow right now. [00:12:22] Sarah: So the whole, like, West Virginia, D. C. area Hammered with snow, and that was our plan. So I'm grateful, although it's a little crazy, I'm grateful that we didn't end up going that way. I'm grateful that there was a bigger plan in place for us. So just trust that you do have support when you reach out to people like your mentors, and if you're in the DoorGrow Mastermind, there are so many resources for you, including property managers who are in the exact same spot that you are in. [00:12:56] Sarah: They've been there. They've done that. They've experienced everything. So leverage the resources that you have available to you. Know that there's support and know that everything is unfolding exactly the way it's supposed to for you in this exact moment. And you will have your breakthrough. The only time that you won't have your breakthrough is if you quit. [00:13:14] Sarah: See, and now we're done.  [00:13:15] Jason: Good words. Good stuff, Sarah. All right.  [00:13:18] Sarah: All right. We're going to go to bed now.  [00:13:20] Jason: Yeah. Get some sleep.  [00:13:22] Sarah: Yep.  [00:13:22] Jason: So until next time, to our mutual growth. Segment 1: • Common Sense or Controversy? J.D. Vance argues that loving everyone equally is unrealistic—biblical love has an order. • Postmodernism's Rejection of Hierarchy: Today's culture rejects prioritizing certain relationships, but the Bible affirms it. • National Leadership Matters: An American president who prioritizes Americans first is a radical (yet biblical) shift. Segment 2: • Greek Over Latin: The Ordo Amoris (Order of Love) isn't just philosophy—it's biblical wisdom. • Who Is My Neighbor? The Good Samaritan didn't go searching for people in need—he helped the one in his path. • Mercy Has Borders: Love is not limited, but practical care starts with those closest to us—family, community, nation. Segment 3: • Restoration to God? Absolutely. A fallen pastor can be restored in his faith and walk with the Lord. • Restoration to Ministry? Not Always. Some sins permanently disqualify a man from pastoral leadership. • Church Leadership Matters: Should a pastor who fell be allowed to teach or serve in any capacity? Biblical wisdom needed. Segment 4: • Wisdom vs. Punishment: We don't punish fallen leaders for their sins, but we must apply biblical standards. • Sin Makes Us Stupid: Are you ignoring small compromises that could lead to disaster? • Spiritual Red Flags: Lack of transparency, secret friendships with the opposite sex, and weak prayer life—time for a heart check. ___ Thanks for listening! Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing 5 famous Slytherin witches and wizards who went on to make history. Within the wizarding world, anyone referred to as simply a “Slytherin” is a current or former student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who was sorted into Slytherin House upon their arrival at the school.  The House of Slytherin is representative of one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, a powerful wizard who believed in magical blood purity and argued that only pureblood families should be offered enrollment at the school. As such, many people associate Slytherins with cruel, dark or simply prejudiced witches or wizards. Unfortunately, this view of Slytherins is further supported by the sheer number of graduates who went on to become entangled with Dark Magic. BUT, it's important to note that that's NOT ALWAYS the case. There are lots of *quote* good witches and wizards who have been former Slytherin students, some of which we'll touch on in today's video. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at five famous Slytherins who made history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Does that mean the lagged impacts of the Fed's aggressive monetary tightening cycle will be fully felt in the year ahead? Is a second wave of inflation remains a major risk? After we booked, they kept sending us promotional emails. Made me wonder if we had a booking! Make sure your upcoming guests aren't sent an email that you are now offering 40% off! - Booking Anniversary to previous guests on their booking date from last year- Type of properties, size of properties, season they visited only?2) Consistent (so you're there when it's time to book) - top of mind. Only way to pull this off is to make your emails interesting/professonal3) Frequency of sending - at least once a month, ideally once a week (TIM & SARAH DISAGREE)4) Not Always a Sales Email - way too many VR emails are like this "20% off for next week!" - think about your own perspective when you get an eblast.5) Types of eblasts - introduce a new property (attracts Lookie Loo's), newsletter format - new restaurants/activities in the area, Resort developments (new gondola), groups of properites/themes, Snow alerts, local partners (make sure you show them they were included), booking anniversary, ...others, TIM? 6) Professional looking, template so recognizable (idea - personalize by showing a person from your team at bottom), highlight properties at bottom, social links, videos, other examplesPaul Hanak from ICND says open rates don't matter! Listen to his reasoning mid-podcast. 7) Call to Action - we always had "book direct & save" at bottom of every single email. 8) Lots of links! Link logo and photos too9) Always include all owners on your emails10) Tracking code to conversion! Follow by email monthly - this is the WHOLE POINT. Don't send an email without tracking conversion. 11) A/B testing - most platforms easily allow you to test everything from subject lines to send times - utilize it!12) Stop gathering emails from "contests" just to have a bigger list. We've tested it! They signed up to win a contest, not to engage with your brand. Open rates are poor, so you wind up paying for all these extra emails without any payoff. Quality over quantity. 13)  Subject Lines are the name of this game. Without a good subject line that captures attention and creates curiosity, that email won't even be opened.  Need some inspiration? Just google "Good email subject lines" and ask ole chatGPT.14) Check and recheck for spelling/grammar errors - everything speaks! (sarah example of "piece")

In this episode of Moments in Leadership, host David B. Armstrong spends time with retired Marine Colonel Stephen Davis, a veteran of the post-Vietnam War Marine Corps, the Reconnaissance Community, Joint Special Operations, and multiple combat tours up to the Regimental Command level, where they spend time discussing various topics related to hard-won lessons from the front lines combined with a realist take on what command, leadership, and management means. From Colonel Davis' initial training operations and three courts martial in his first week of command, the conversation discusses the concept of having, understanding, and being humble enough to ask for assistance from those who have been there before, namely the Staff Non-Commissioned Officers who have the inherent experience in an organization. This oft-ridden military maxim is buttressed by examples of not being wholly subservient to these people either and Colonel Davis provides examples where ‘stellar' Marines have cracked under pressure and changes have to be made to protect the troops.    Colonel Davis never expected to stay in the Marine Corps and some of the reasons he decided to make it a career early into it provide some examples of how leadership is often the primary determinant of wanting to belong, or conversely, to leave, an organization. Leaders make the culture. Colonel Davis subscribed to this notion enough that he made himself overly useful as an infantry officer in a Reconnaissance unit as its Supply Officer. This led to large dividends down the road in his command life and shows true leaders take opportunities, even if they appear bad, and make the best out of them.  The Reconnaissance Community instilled numerous values within Colonel Davis. Specifically, he learned how to lead overachievers, how sometimes metrics are not the best indicators of a ‘good' unit or Marine, and the differences between Management and Leadership.  One of the more interesting lessons Colonel Davis provides is on the concept of the combat leader. Colonel Davis leans into the idea that leaders need to be where they need to be, but not always at the front. He is also a believer that the line between a bad decision and the Medal of Honor is razor-thin and medal chasers have no business in the combat arms field.  Colonel Davis provides discussion points on the focus of a leader (the Commanding Officer) vice a manager (the Executive Officer/Chief of Staff) and how they are both important to the overall success of an organization.  The episode goes into Colonel Davis' time as the Regimental Combat Team 2 Commanding Officer and the successes (Manuever Warfare use of illusionary force structure in a Counterinsurgency environment to take ‘denied' strongholds in two days) and the failures (Moral issue sins of commission and omission with the Haditha killings) and how these incidents led to him once again blossoming to help with similar issues within the Naval Special Warfare Community, specifically moral injury, boundless loyalty, and who does a person owe their allegiance to. Overall, the episode is an insightful discussion about leadership, moral convictions, and the ability to take the best out of situations.  Thank you for supporting the project (below) Please consider supporting this project on Supercast: Moments In Leadership Supercast  Want to support the project AND look cool at the gym or when you take your blouse off for a working party? Dogs do not bark just because. Anyone who wants to know how to stop dog barking should understand behind any excessive barking is a real, serious trigger… at least in our dog's eyes. Indeed, barking is a big behavioral issue! But it is often misunderstood. Most dog owners and even dog trainers treat barking at face value, as if there's nothing more to it. This is where most solutions get it wrong — they focus on stopping dog barking without addressing the root cause of the problem. Dog owners get frustrated because even if they do get some success, after a few days of silence, the barking resumes! This is what I aim to change with Rule #4 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules. As a top dog trainer who has seen the most notorious of barkers switch off after just a few tries, I have proven that the best way to solve a barking issue is to be the leader WHO DEALS WITH DANGER. A leader who can tell a dog “You can hand over the protecting to me. I deal with danger. I've got you covered. You can relax.” What does this mean and how can you be this kind of leader? Read on to learn more about Doggy Dan's Golden Rule #4. Key Takeaways: Dogs are naturally protective because for them, all that matters is their survival and the pack's. Rule #4 focuses on helping dog owners communicate to their dogs “I am in charge, I will decide how to react, I deal with danger, you can relax.” Saying “Thank You!” is one of the ways to make dogs understand that YOU are in charge with danger, not them. LEARN HOW TO STOP DOG BARKING WITH THE DOGGY DAN GOLDEN RULE #4! Table of Contents Recap: Rules #1, #2, #3 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Rule #4 is Dealing with Danger: Dear Dog, I am in Charge of Danger, Not You How Rule #4 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Help You React Like a Leader In Charge of Danger What Your Dogs Will Learn From the Rule #4 The Five Most Common Mistakes Dog Owners Do to Stop Dog Barking How to Stop Dog Barking: Calmer Dogs Have Owners Who Understand Rule #4 By Heart Dog Calming Code: Helping Dogs Stop Barking and Live the “Switched Off” Life   How to Stop Dog Barking: Rules #1, #2, #3 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Recap Important Note: Before you implement Doggy Dan Golden Rule #4 — Dealing with Danger — with your dog training, it's imperative that you are already following Rules #1, #2, and #3. Unless these rules are in place, you and your dog won't be able to make Rule #4 work as effectively. To recap, the first three rules focus on winning your dog's mind by showing them you're the pack leader, not them: Rule #1 talks about controlling the food and understanding why being in control of the food communicates that you are in charge. (You can check Rule #1 here.). Rule #2 is about the importance of ignoring your dog after separation and why it's crucial in establishing leadership in the home. (Learn about Rule #2 here.) Rule#3 is about helping your dogs pass on the leadership hat to you through showing them that you and not them call the shots. (Learn about Rule #3 here.) These rules are important prerequisites to make sure Rule #4 really does its magic on your dogs. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DOGGY DAN FIVE GOLDEN RULES WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE Rule #4 is Dealing with Danger: Dear Dog, I am in Charge of Danger, Not You Dogs are naturally very protective of us. Why? As established in the first three blogs for this series, nothing matters more to our dogs than their survival, and the pack's. (Watch the full video below for Rule #4)   This protectiveness comes from their wolf ancestry as wolves are stalwart in protecting the pack from potential threats. Therefore, anything they think poses any danger to the pack are dealt with VERY SERIOUSLY Strangers walking past the property? Dog will bark. Motorcycle zooms by? Dog barks. Birds swooping through the garden? Dog goes nuts. I often say this: unless trained, dogs are instinctive—they DO what's natural for them. And what's natural is to ensure the pack and the property are safe. WE CAN'T BLAME A DOG FOR BARKING AT RANDOM THREATS ALL THE TIME: THEY NEED TO ALERT US TO DANGER TO KEEP US SAFE. What Dogs Communicate with Every Bark In every “woof, woof” your dog makes to a stranger across the street, or a distant sound is this message: “Hey, this is my property and I am in charge. I will deal with you! You look dangerous, you have to stay away! I'm going to bark so you will be scared to come near.” If you want to know how to stop dog barking, this is crucial info! Simply saying “STOP!” won't do it for our dogs, no matter how much we try. They're protectors — they won't get it why you're asking them to stop when danger is really there! They're worried the strange shadow that passed the window will harm you or the property, so unless their fear of the danger is pacified, barking will persist. How Doggy Dan Rule #4 Helps Dogs Switch Off and Stop Barking Rule #4 enables dog owners to communicate this clearly to dogs: “You are not the one in charge of danger, I am. You can relax. I'm going to handle every decision around danger. I deal with the threat. Thank you, you can calm down now.” Of course, we can't just say this out loud expecting our dog to immediately walk away from the threat. Your dog has to feel, see, and hear that you are indeed a confident, capable leader they can trust to handle danger. And when they feel your confidence—your calm, unbothered energy, with body language that's relaxed—they will catch on. But what do you need to do to become a capable Alpha in your dog's eyes? DOG CALMING CODE: THE PROGRAM TO GUIDE YOU HOW TO STOP DOG BARKING How Rule #4 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Help You React Like a Leader In Charge of Danger In situations where your dog barks non-stop, you can seize the chance to tell your dog: "I've got it handled, buddy. No need to worry or agitated. I got you covered." You can convey this POWERFUL message through your words, voice, body language, and overall demeanor. Communicating this message is purely done through dog psychology so your dog can absolutely get what you mean. If your dog is in a middle of a barking episode, here are three things that can encourage your dog to switch off and be calm. STOP DOG BARKING WITH THE HELP OF THE DOG CALMING CODE Showing Your Dog You Hear Them with a “Thank You!” Your dog has to know that you hear “Danger! Danger! Danger! I'm protecting you so I'm barking” instead of just… well… barking. You can't be the protector in their eyes if you can't even understand the urgency of their barking! Now, there's a thin line between letting your dogs know you get them, and indulging them. I'm sure it's tempting to go to your dog and give them a comforting pat or hug and say “Where's the danger? You scared right? Good boy, I'm here.” But that only tells them they are still the ones making the decisions around danger. All I would do is say “Thank you!” in a calm, gentle, relaxed voice just to let your dog know you hear them but you're not worried. Acknowledging The Danger and Saying Thank You From experience, I know that some dogs aren't satisfied with just hearing “Thank you!” They persist with the barking as if saying “You don't get it! There's danger outside! How can you be unbothered when you haven't even checked yet!” It's very powerful when they see you get up, walk calmly over and check what they're seeing, remaining unfazed, then turning your back on the “danger”, and walk off with a “Thank you!” Your. Dog. Will. Get. It. You've seen the “danger” and you've totally ignored it! You made the decision that you're not worried about the threat your dog sees. It's an effective way to let your dogs know “I've seen the danger and I have a decision about it. The bird you are barking at does not bother me so it should not bother you. Go on and relax.” Making It Absolutely Clear That Barking is NOT Okay In some cases, using the two solutions I mentioned above won't immediately work for the first or second time. Your dog may still continue to bark. If barking persists, you can calmly take them to timeout for a few minutes until they relax. STOP DOG BARKING AND HELP DOGS SWITCH OFF WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE What Your Dogs Will Learn From the Rule #4 This powerful rule has three pillars that dog owners ABSOLUTELY have to know: #1: I am the Pack Leader. I Deal with Danger Rule #4 lets your dog know “I am the leader here, so I will protect you. If there's danger, I'll handle it. You don't have to worry.” Dogs naturally look up to a strong and confident pack leader, someone they can trust to make decisions in potentially dangerous situations. Being a leader who makes the decisions and remains unbothered by threats makes your dogs feel “Ahhh, someone capable is taking the protector hat from me. Finally, I can relax!” Dogs will start to switch off their vigilance (and non-stop barking!) and have faith in you as a leader. #2: I Decide What's Dangerous or Not It's true — your dog barking aggressively at a bird's shadow looks ridiculous! But your dog doesn't know a bird is NOT a big threat. However, you do! And the simple gesture of saying “Thank you!” and calmly acknowledging the source of the barking without a worried energy can help your dog understand there's nothing to stress about. Rule #4 helps you communicate “Relax, it's not a threat” through your energy, tone of voice, overall demeanor, and body language! #3: I Take Lead on How to React To explain this fully, let me tell you a story about an Alpha, their pack of wolves, and an ice cream motorcycle. For wolves, the ice cream motorcycle is totally alien! It's not a creature of the woods. It's strange, so therefore, dangerous. When it comes to tricky situations like this one, the Alpha is steps in to do the checking while the other pack members wait. BECOME THE ALPHA OF THE PACK WITH THE HELP OF THE DOG CALMING CODE Then, after a few minutes of checking, the Alpha walks away, totally ignoring the bike. Do you think the other wolves will cry out “Uhm, excuse me? It's still dangerous!” NO! The Alpha knows. And because they walked away calmly, ignoring the thing that all of the pack thought dangerous, the other wolves understand there's nothing to worry about. Oh but how different would it be if the Alpha started barking at the bike! Other wolves surely join in in no time! In situations your dog perceives as dangerous, THEY WILL BE LOOKING TO YOU. The way you react to things your dog considers as threats has the power to stop your dog from having a full-on barking spree! THE DOG CALMING CODE: THE GUIDE TO HELP YOU HAVE CALMER, HAPPIER DOGS The Five Most Common Mistakes Dog Owners Do to Stop Dog Barking Yes, even the most well-meaning gesture can encourage frequent barking responses from your dog. Let me explain… In an ideal world, we dog owners should be reacting to our dog's barking episodes with a calm energy and an unbothered body language. However, this is NOT ALWAYS the case. In fact, I have worked with dog owners who correct dog barking through this scenario: Let's say a dog named Rover starts barking at someone walking past the front gate. In the eyes of Rover, the stranger poses a threat of real danger! But here's the scenario that PLAYS OUT MOST IN REAL LIFE. Rover: *Barking to say “Hey everybody, there's a stranger close to the property. Is this danger real? What should I do?”* Dog Owner: “Cut it out, Rover!” (in a shouty voice) Rover: *Continues barking to say “But seriously, I'm barking because they look dangerous, and you're shouting back so I'm barking louder—can't you hear me?!”* Dog Owner: “I said cut it out now!!” (more irritated) Rover: *Barking louder than ever “There's danger present and I'M BARKING THE LOUDEST BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT SEEING THIS FOR YOURSELF PLUS YOU SOUND AGITATED SO I'LL BARK EVEN MORE!” Finally, the stranger is no longer in sight. Rover stops barking, and goes over to his owner who says “Good boy, Rover. Good boy.” From the interaction above, we learn of FOUR BIGGEST MISTAKES that you can do when teaching your dog to stop barking. Mistake #1: Dog Owner Shouts Without Doing Anything to Acknowledge the Dog's Call for Attention. They made no effort to confirm if there was danger or not, sending the signal to the dog that danger is their job to deal with. That puts stress on the dog to take charge and become overly protective. Mistake #2: Not Keeping Their Energy in Check Dogs are big energy readers and absorbers. You can influence them with your energy. Even if you're saying “Thank you!” but you're doing it with an irritated tone, your dog will think the danger is bothering you. Mistake #3: Giving a Treat After a Dog's Barking Episode If you give your dog a pat, a cuddle, a hug, or a treat after they barked non-stop, your dog will start thinking they did the right thing! Your dog will think “If I sense danger, my owner wants me to bark my loudest because I have to do all the protecting.” The more you give rewards to a dog that barks non-stop, the more they will think that there's no problem with barking all the time! Now, I'm going to include two more mistakes not found in the scenario above, which often stall the success of Rule #4. Mistake #4: Giving Pats and Cuddles WHILE Dealing with Danger I empathize with you — it's heartbreaking to see a stressed dog. It's so easy to give in to hugging them or patting them while on a barking episode. You might go “Oh, Rover. Is that bird making you scared? Go away, bird! How about now? Are you still scared?” Let me tell you this: it's going to do more harm. You have to be absolutely clear that it's you who will have the final say whether or not something is worth the worry. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DOG CALMING CODE, THE PROGRAM TRUSTED BY 88,000 DOG OWNERS! Mistake #5: Cheating Through the Process Some dog owners give up after the first “Thank you!” thinking it will still work on their dogs. Truth is: it won't. You have to operate in a language dogs can process and understand. And the process of saying the first “Thank you,” checking out the source of the barking, showing calm and unbothered demeanor, and giving timeouts when necessary should be done in order for it to work. How to Stop Dog Barking: Calmer Dogs Have Owners Who Understand Rule #4 By Heart Dogs — especially those who have taken on the responsibility of protecting you and your property — can't relax. They're constantly running around, barking non-stop at everything and everyone, and often exhibit serious separation anxiety. You can easily tell a relaxed dog from a wired one, and the difference is always so sad. I remember the first time a dog licked my hands after using Rule #4 on him. In that moment, I thought it was just a sweet coincidence. However, so many dogs I've helped since then would do the same. Dogs who FINALLY SWITCHED OFF would lick my hands as if saying “Thank you!” It's as if it's their way of telling me: “Wow, mate. You finally got the security covered. I'm gonna switch off now.” This is why I always ask dog owners to learn Rule #4 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules as it is the solution that solves both the root cause of the problem and the non-stop barking. I've seen it transform my dogs and the dogs of the people I have worked with. Dog owners who follow it have less stress on the park and during walks because unfamiliar stranger and dogs in the park no longer triggers their dogs! I know you love your dog, and I know that aside from the barking, you also want them to be the happy, calm, relaxed, healthy dog you've always wanted them to be. I have four words: follow Rule #4. LEARN MORE ABOUT GOLDEN RULE NUMBER FOUR WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE Dog Calming Code: How to Stop Barking and Help Dogs Live the “Switched Off” Life I hope by now you see that Golden Rule #4 of dog training is a gift our stressed, anxious, high-wired dogs WILL ABSOLUTELY THANK US FOR. However, as a dog trainer who has helped thousands of dog owners navigate their dog's barking problem with Rule #4, I know that it's also EASY TO GET THIS WRONG. But in your quest for a bark-free household and happier dog, I've made sure YOU WILL NEVER FEEL ALONE OR CONFUSED BY HOW TO IMPLEMENT THIS RULE. In my online dog training program, the Dog Calming Code™️, you'll discover the thorough, step-by-step instructions on Rule #4, and all the other Golden Rules. With the Dog Calming Code, you'll learn answers to common questions around Rule #4 including: What do we do if we don't know what our dog is barking at? Will we have to do this forever? Is it ok to call the dog to us to stop it barking? What should we do if after the second thank you our dog runs away and plays a game of chase! Should we praise our dog when he comes to us after he has barked? Is it ok if we change the word to something else? Is it ok to recall our dog when he is barking? After the second Thank You our dog likes to do one more gruff but then follows us inside, my question is do we have to isolate him for this? We still want a guard dog, how will this work? Let me assure you: this is not one of those temporary, quick-fix, no-more-barking-solutions. Rule #4 talks to your dog's very core, assuring them “Hey, you're not in charge. And the one in charge has you covered 100%. No need to bark, or bite, or chase anymore. Take a break, buddy. You deserve it.” And really, isn't that what YOUR dog absolutely deserve? Hot off our 50th episode, the Camerosity Podcast goes back to the roots of our name, exploring the rich history of Eastman Kodak, one of the most influential companies in the photographic world.  You can't talk about the history of Kodak without George Eastman and what better way to explore that history than with Todd Gustavson, curator of the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY. Todd has been on the show before, but in this the 51th episode, he gets center stage, talking of his role at the Eastman Museum, the origins of George Eastman and how his company got started.  In this episode, you'll learn about George Eastman making dry plates in his mother's kitchen, his motivation for making the original 1888 Kodak, where the name "Kodak" comes from, early 20th century Kodaks, prewar, postwar, and everything in between. Also joining us on the show is the only person in the US I would trust with Kodak Retina repair, Paul Barden.  Back in 2022, long time Retina guru Chris Sherlock hung up his lens spanners and retired from Retina repair.  Not willing to leave a void in quality Retina service, Chris passed on his knowledge to Paul, who lives on the west coast of the United States.  This not only means that there is still a quality option for Retina repair, but for those of you in the US, shipping rates are much cheaper than to New Zealand!  Listen to this episode as Paul talks about his work repairing Retinas, what some of his favorite models are, and what models he does and doesn't repair. In addition to Todd and Paul's massive amount of Kodak knowledge, we go deep into some of the best Kodak cameras ever made, the Kodaks Ektra, Medalist, Monitor, and Regent get discussed here.  We talk about Walter Dorwin Teague, Dr. August Nagel, and Hubert Nerwin.  Mike shares what his all time favorite Retina is to shoot, Anthony discusses his nomination for a medium format Retina, Todd and Mike talk about Joe Mihayli and his contributions to Kodak's legacy. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  We would love to hear from more listeners, especially those who are new to shooting film or collecting cameras.  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. Our next episode of the Camerosity Podcast will be our widest ever, as the gang discusses panorama photography and panoramic cameras.  If you've ever wanted to know what it's like to shoot a Hasselblad XPan, Soviet Horizont, Noblex, or a Widelux camera, this is the episode for you!  Episode 52 will be recorded on Friday, June 30th.  We hope to see you there!

Traditional Worship | Rev. Drew Essen | We now find ourselves in the season of Advent, a four-week period of preparation that culminates in the birth of Jesus. It should be a time of excitement and joy, of laughter and merriment. But for many, this season is a time of sadness, emptiness and frustration. Life should be wonderful, but how can it be when so many things take us away from the real joy of Christmas? How do we find light in the darkness, peace amid chaos and good news in a bad-news world? In this sermon series, “It's (Not Always) a Wonderful Life,” we will rediscover the hope that comes from the faithful promises of God to bring peace through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Summary/AbstractAshley Faus of Atlassian joins Dr. Jim to discuss a range of topics related to success, including weighted decision matrices, brand building, and credibility. Ashley shares her story of how she found success in multiple passion areas, and offers advice on how others can pursue their own goals. In this conversation, Ashley discusses her work in product marketing for Atlassian, her experience in a number of different industries, and her philosophy on work-life integration. She also talks about her hobby of baking, which she picked up during the Covid pandemic. In the beginning of the conversation, the idea of a weighted decision matrix is introduced. This matrix is a tool that can be used to help make decisions. The matrix takes into account different factors that are important to the decision maker and assigns a weight to each factor. The factors are then used to help make the final decision.Ashley  and her husband used this matrix when deciding on colleges. They considered different factors such as location, cost, and degree programs. In the end, they were able to make a decision that was best for them.Ashley  spoke about how to  make decisions by weighing different trade-offs. This theory can be used when making decisions about things like job offers, where someone might consider factors such as growth potential, compensation, work-life balance, and the tasks of the role. To use the theory, Ashley recommends picking five categories of things that matter to you, and then assigning a percentage to each category to show how important it is to you. You can then score each job offer you receive in each category, and multiply that score by the percentage to get a total satisfaction score for each job. The job offer with the highest satisfaction score is the one you should take.Timestamps00:00:00Ashley Faus: The Road to Though Leadership - PT 100:02:00Ashley Faus: Work-Life Integration and Baking00:04:42The Benefits of a Weighted Decision Matrix00:06:19The Benefits of Using a Value-Based Decision Framework00:10:23The Power of Defining Your Priorities in Career Progression00:11:53The Different Industries I've Worked In00:13:28The Reality of Marketing: It's Not Always the 'Cool' Stuff00:15:38The Importance of Choosing the Right Manager When Starting Your Career00:19:46The Importance of a Sampling Period in Your Career00:22:28The Importance of Intentionality in Career Development00:25:19The Power of a Weighted Decision Matrix: How Ashley Faus Got Her Dream Job00:27:00The Importance of Growth and Development in the Workplace00:28:41The Power of Internal Moves: A Conversation with Ashley FausMusic Credit: Maarten Schellekens - Riviera Follow us at: www.cascadingleadership.comlinkedin.com/in/drjimklinkedin.com/in/1lawrenceobrown

Hello again,So I recently had a fascinating discussion with one of the people I coach. She works as a UX designer for an agency and was asking about how she should handle situations where she believes terrible decisions are being made. She struggles to balance speaking up and knowing when to accept defeat graciously. It is a topic I touched on tangentially a while back, but I wanted to discuss it more directly today because I believe it is a balance many people struggle to get right. It is certainly something I struggle with myself. Some people fail to speak up because they lack confidence, while others must learn when to keep their mouths shut and let things go. I will let you guess which category I fall into! You Don't Know the Whole StoryI have learned over the years that I don't know as much as I think I do, and any decision probably includes many more factors than I am considering. For example, the user experience must always be balanced with factors like business objectives and return on investment. It is not as simple as always going for the best experience possible. If that were the case, every company would give away their products and services for free!Different Perspectives Need ConsiderationEach stakeholder will come with their perspective based on their understanding of the project. Each will only see a part of the puzzle, so disagreements are inevitable.Testing is Not Always the AnswerAs I have said many times over the years, I prefer to test when these issues arise to decide which approach is best. However, that is not always possible due to time constraints, budget, or the nature of the issue. We Must Respect the Decision of LeadershipThat is where it falls to leadership to make the final call, and it is okay if they don't always agree with you. However, we must learn to accept their decision even if we disagree.Does that mean they will always get it right? Absolutely not. However, ultimately a decision needs to be made and they will have the broadest perspective of all the factors involved. Our ResponsibilityThat said, we have a responsibility too. Our responsibility is to communicate our opinion as clearly as possible and back it with as much evidence as we can gather. But it is also our responsibility to shut up and accept defeat if we fail to convince leadership. Continuing to argue will damage the project, undermine relationships, and is extremely unlikely to change the outcome. That is not to say you need to agree with the decision. Never say that you think something is correct just because somebody else says so. If you do, you will get sucked into the blame game if things go wrong. So instead, agree to disagree and implement their final decision with no more fuss.Don't Take It PersonallyHowever, most of all, I would encourage you to be more laid back about whether a client or boss implements your idea or not. Your job is to present the options and give them your opinion and any associated evidence. After that, it is down to them. If they reject your idea, focus on getting better at communicating your opinion next time. Never take it personally.Ultimately life is too short, and you will be constantly unhappy if you consistently fight colleagues and management.

Happy Birthday to my sister, Lexie. She is my only sibling. Six years older than me.  When I was a kid growing up, folks reached 65 and it was considered the age at which people stopped working. Companies seemed to ordain that once you were 65 you were done. Finished. Now that I'm 65 it feels so wrong. And incongruent with how the world works today. I look at old photos of my grandparents when they were still in their 50s and they seemed so old to me at the time. Even through the lens of my 65-year-old eyes today, those old photos depict people much older than my current age. Never mind that they were a full decade younger than I now am - they looked old. They acted old. But they lived in a world where their peers looked and acted in a similar fashion. I'm not sure how to properly define the lines of life, but mine seem to fall into a few different categories: spiritual, mental, relational, professional, and financial. There's nothing absolute about these, but I can use them to illustrate the point of today's show. Spiritual is upfront because eternity changes everything. That makes our spiritual life the most important part of our life. Spiritual is the priority so it spills over into every other area. Mental is next for me because it overlaps all of the others, too. It encompasses feelings and beliefs. It also includes our inner drive - the motivation we exhibit when we display the energy we have to achieve whatever it is we're aiming to achieve. Relational matters because it's our interaction with others. From our closest relationships - like marriage - to our most casual - like some social media friends we've never met in person. Without this, there is no influence or impact on others. And without it, others have no influence on us either. Professional is what we choose to do to earn a living. Financial is our relationship with money. It includes the decisions we make with our money. Where we spend it. How we invest it. How we might waste it. Anything else involving our money, including our stuff! These are a few of the lines I'm thinking about, but that's not all of them. I'm also thinking about the lines between who I am and who I most want to be. There's the person I am versus the person I'm working to become. I'm thinking of the past, present, and future lines, too. We all have a past that has contributed to helping us be who we now are. And all of our choices are going to impact who we're likely to become. As you can see, our lives are filled with lots of lines. It's easy to understand how they can become blurred. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between them. For example... It's Always About The Money. Ok, Not Always, But Often! Yes, that's cynical. But mostly realistic. Regardless of our age money is the ever-present elephant in the room. Every room. I'm not saying money matters above everything, but I am saying that money is a preoccupation with most of us. We spend the greater part of our lives earning it or trying to. Then we spend time lusting for things money can buy. Money (financial) can crossover and impact all those other areas or lines. I'm old. I've had no-telling-how-many conversations with people about money and luck. And timing. Permit a qualifier. I've only had a few conversations with people who were chasing a dream in the arts and performance areas of life. Those folks wanted fame. They wanted their work to be seen, heard, or experienced in some way. But since I started out in small business as a teen, most of my conversations have been with people who mostly wanted money - MORE money than they currently had, or were earning. Preparing for your time to come means preparing so you can at long last make MORE money. Nothing wrong with that, I'm just acknowledging the elephant in the room --- for many people. But this is logical. We all need money. Most of us need MORE money. Not all of us need, want, or crave fame or notoriety.

In today's show, Master Coach and author Karen CL Anderson and I share a discussion around being daughters of difficult mothers. Karen's work is to help adult daughters of difficult mothers use their relationship as a catalyst for growth, creativity and wisdom. When it comes to fielding the actions and words a difficult mother offers us as her daughter, it most certainly does feel personal. It's meant  as  personal. I love how our conversation evolves around that, and how we've each come to claim and stand in our own individual truths in relations to it. Read Karen's Love Note "It's Not Always a Matter of Not Taking It Personally" that inspired this conversationKaren's bio:Karen C.L. Her approach is safe, fun, and effective.Karen recognizes that what's possible personally is what's possible collectively, and that “the Mother Wound” is not actually about mothers, but about systems that oppress all women. She understands the adage, “hurt people, hurt people,” but prefers to say “people who are unaware of their hurts sometimes hurt other people,” while also acknowledging that cultivating compassion and empathy does not mean you have to hang out with hurt people, and that healthy boundaries (up to and including going “no contact”) are at the heart of healing. She was featured as a subject matter expert in the New York Times: Remember, It's Okay To Set Boundaries!
