Send us a textThis show is a proof to me that my insistence on doing podcasts without written questions in hand or a script is the right way.I agreed to this show - a talk with Michael Crowl, ceo of $4 billion Austin Texas based UFCU - because I'd heard he had been developing an interesting strategic plan.At many credit unions there are strategic plans but often they aren't interesting and often, too, nobody pays any attention gto them anyway.Supposedly UFCU and Crowl, who has been at UFCU for 20 years and has been CEO since September 2022, were different.Indeed they are.But pretty quickly we veered off the plan and dove into how this guy had risen to the CEO job at a very big credit union.  He grew up in government housing.  He worked his way through the University of Houston.  Then he went into investment banking, earned a good score and then - he went into teaching math at a high school.A few years later he happened into a job at UFCU and fell in love with what a credit union is and could be for its members.In the show I even ask the hardest question to throw at a CEO - when did you decide you wanted to be CEO and how did you get there?  And Cowl gives a simple but honest answer.I ask an even harder question: is this your last job?It's a great show - and I had no idea it would turn out this way.  But that's the magic of doing this work this way.  Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish writer born on August 28, 1814, in Dublin, Ireland. He was the third son of a Protestant family with French origins.Le Fanu received his early education at Trinity College, Dublin, but left before finishing his degree to pursue a career in journalism. He quickly established himself as a successful writer, publishing stories in various magazines and newspapers.In the 1840s, Le Fanu began to focus more on fiction writing, and his works began to gain wider recognition. His most famous novel, "Uncle Silas," was published in 1864 and is considered a classic of Victorian Gothic literature. Other notable works include "In a Glass Darkly" and "Carmilla."Le Fanu's writing style was characterized by a strong sense of atmosphere and suspense, often incorporating supernatural elements. He was known for his ability to create vivid and memorable characters, particularly his strong female protagonists.Despite his success as a writer, Le Fanu's personal life was marked by tragedy. He lost his wife and infant daughter to childbirth complications, and his health began to decline in the late 1860s. The July 1926 murder of the editor of the Canton, Ohio, Daily News, Don R. Mellett, was one of the most publicized crimes in the 1920s. For less than a year, Mellett was the editor of the Daily News, owned by former Ohio governor and Democrat presidential candidate James Cox. Having promised Cox he would turn the unprofitable News into a success, Mellett combined personal conviction with marketing savvy and in 1925 embarked on an antivice, anticorruption editorial campaign. The following year, the Daily News and Mellett, posthumously, received the Pulitzer Prize for his columns.His editorials were often aimed at the Canton police chief, S. A. Lengel, making the News law and order crusade personal. An unholy alliance of bootleggers and corrupt police, angered at Mellett's interference with business as usual, hired an ex-con from Pennsylvania, Patrick McDermott, to attack and scare the editor. When the intended assault spiraled out of control and Mellett was murdered, the national press became outraged and saw this situation as an attack on the First Amendment, demanding justice in editorials appearing on the front pages of newspapers throughout the country.My guest is Thomas Crowl, author of "Murder of a Journalist: The True Story of the Death of Donald Ring Mellett.
